FALLOUT: A Survivor Talks to Incest Offenders (And Others), plus her dream diary and drawings

Rate this book
A treater of sex offenders who is herself an incest survivor comes out of the closet after retirement to "tell it like it is," having learned over the years that incest offenders and others don't believe their behavior is harmful. Mykel draws upon her own life experience to demonstrate the kinds of damage that often goes unnoticed by others, including the survivors and of course the offenders. Her exposition is backed up by inclusion of selected parts of her chronological dream diary and drawings in the latter part of the book.

Included are letters from her father(one of the perpetrators)as well as information on treatment of the illicit behavior (unreported sex offenders are unable to avail themselves of treatment without risking arrest). Since the book just became available on Amazon, there are no reviews.

Up to 20 pdf copies of the book are available for members to read, via request, starting Tuesday,December 16.

It's rumored I was a breech birth, which is no way to start a relationship with Mom. Although a little unnerving, a fitting metaphor for my life might be a roller coaster.

I attended 11 schools in 12 years (3 of them in 1952), two universities (UF and GSU), and experienced contrasting sets of grandparents. My father's parents were salt of the earth folks (although somewhat incest-ridden) and my mother's parents were finger bowl Dixiecrats from whom my mother eloped to join my alcoholic father. (She had trouble with her mother, also).

I was blessed with 4 precious children--three girls and a boy. The youngest daughter is s Down's syndrome child, who introduced the family to angst and joy, exasperation and titilation. I'm happy to report that all 4 are thriving.

While riding my metaphorical roller coaster, I obtained a license in psychology and found myself treating incarcerated sex offenders, including incest perpetrators. After 12 or 13 years (however you count it), I retired. From the very beginning I was startled to observe that incest offenders deny both to themselves and others that father/daughter incest, for instance, is harmful.

Working with sex offenders was both a professional and personal challenge, especially since I knew I'd been damaged by both my paternal grandfather and my father's molestation. The offenders in our program would shrug and say, "She's okay; she got married and graduated. It didn't hurt her." I knew I had to try and set the record straight for incest offenders who were never reported and thus had experienced no treatment (mandatory reporting laws being what they are); for their families; other survivors and other professionals who might be able to plug in my own experience with theirs.

I handled the stress of it all by keeping a longstanding dream diary and participating in the local public access television channel as a volunteer producer, which I also recommend.
