I was really looking forward to this, I've enjoyed Sally's Instagram for a while and - given her personal style - was hoping for something that's not just the usual basic advice for people starting from zero. Perhaps I'm just not the target group; I know what I like but am always evolving and looking for new and interesting ways to approach how I dress.
Well. In short, I was told to look in the mirror, roll up my sleeves, cuff my pants, tuck in my shirt, wear what makes me feel good, throw on sneakers if I want casual, add a blazer if I want more sophistication, combine obvious colour choices, not to store my knits on hangers, and iron my clothes before I leave the house.
I suppose personal stylists most frequently work with people who are very much caught in a rut, have no idea what to do, and find the entire thing overwhelming. That's all fair enough and if that's you, give it a try. However, there's nothing in there that you can't find for free elsewhere. Alison Bornstein's three style words are probably the most helpful, yet not very original, contribution.
This lovely pink book is a gem. If you love putting looks together you’ll probably know Styled by Sally from the socials where she uploads looks and style tips regularly. This book gathers her insights and guiding principles into an elegant beautifully illustrated tome. I loved her encouragement to play with your wardrobe and not to save your hero pieces for ‘best’. As a result , the tulle has gone to school! (High school teacher here). As a frock lover, it’s easy to fall into a daily frock and earrings approach to style and while this definitely works (one of my style words is after all ‘effortless’) it’s fun to branch out. It is quite trouser heavy for my personal preference - Sally herself wears pants very well - but it’s definitely inclusive in intention. Perhaps a revised edition might have a little more for the frock and skirt folk. Sally also takes a ‘first principles’ approach so considering the more style literate members of her audience could encourage a few more complex chapters. Nevertheless I enjoyed Sally’s voice very much.
I think the best thing about it book is its simplicity and that it essentially gives you permission to be you and trust your style whilst providing some practical guidelines.
