Outcasts of Oloria #3

Border Control

Rate this book
She’s used to being in control. He was created to obey. But on Earth, nothing goes according to plan.

Laura keeps her worlds career, friends, and family all neat and organized like a courtroom argument. As a rising-star lawyer, she doesn’t have time for complications, especially not sexy, submissive aliens crash-landing on her best friend’s property.

But when she witnesses one of them—tall, muscled, and clearly struggling—spiral into violence, Laura does what she always takes control. Dom responds like no man ever has. He wants to obey her. Needs it. Craves it. And she discovers a side of herself she's never dared explore.

Dom was created to serve, but in exile on Earth he's barely holding it together. His role as a psychic stabilizer for his wave brothers demands total strength and zero selfishness. Then comes confident, commanding, and achingly human. One night in her arms threatens everything. Because now he wants something just for himself.

For the first time, Laura’s orderly world is unraveling. They return to Oloria to fix it, and instead land Dom in trouble.

And to save him, she’ll have to destroy every line she ever drew.

🔥 A sizzling sci-fi romance dripping with slow-burn tension that will leave you breathless, featuring a caring, exiled alien and a determined human heroine. Perfect for fans of Ruby Dixon and Honey Phillips (for fast-paced plot) with Emma Hamm vibes (angsty slow burn with lots of tension and adventure). Featuring a protective himbo, forced proximity, anxiety rep and boss babes who refuse to back down. 🔥

Trigger Strict culture, mention of death and execution, fantasy peril, on page sex. No cheating.

Lots of longing looks and alien appendages ;)

You know the feeling when you've loved the previous books in a series and the anticipation of the next one is met with equal elation and apprehension? Not sure if the next book is just as awesome? Well....Within the first few pages the apprehension dissipated entirely and I did a happy dance, three times! Once because I was getting back into this absorbingly magical world, second, the yummiest Aliens, and thirdly because LAURA! Yes, I loved her from when I first met her in the previous books, but now I adore her! No nonsense, say it as it is Laura is an attorney, rules, regulations are part of her world, aliens are not! A crash landing of a spaceship on her besties farm put paid to that theory and now she's knee deep in aliens. Cool aliens. Hot looking aliens. Helpful aliens. Subservient aliens.

Each book follows a different duo of MCs, all set in the same timeline and featuring characters from the previous 2 books. I love seeing dual POVs, by doing so, Ms Tama allows us to peer into the thoughts and actions of the characters, both human and alien alike. If there really WERE aliens, I'd imagine my encounter would be similar, THAT'S how realistically this author presented it. These aliens are different, they're not your "classic" little green men, they're full on hot-blooded sexy as heck aliens, but the biggest difference is, they are clones, they have been "made" and "programmed" to be subservient to all females, to protect them, to follow any order or request any female dishes out. They come from a very unequal society that disregards clones as nothing more than a useful tool. Disposable. But the clones need leadership, they need direction, they need structure or they're lost, emotionally, psychologically, even physically. The structure of their makeup and their world demands it. And they look to females or their leader for commands. They're not supposed to "feel", they're just supposed to obey. Guess how that's working out?

Of all the aliens, Dom is the one who made my heart clench the most. There are set roles for each alien and Dom's is, besides being numero uno for any female's whims, to keep his team, his brothers, running on optimum, which, in effect means, he absorbs all their pain or anguish, he props them up mentally. Like ouch! Mentally and physically. But that's not the worst of it, Dom feels he needs to be "punished" for any failings or perceived transgressions. Which concerns Laura big time. Which has Laura coming up with a very unorthodox way to mitigate Dom's need and channel it into a more positive one. A very oo la la one...My word did Ms Tama paint an image so vivid! I loved how distinct she made all of them, Ilia, the leader; Nevare and Arik, a part of Dom but not, the instability, the anxiety, the pain, the emotions all need an outlet and a balance and that is Dom's duty. Starved of and for affection, without even knowing it, seeing Dom unravel, in pleasure and joy he's never experienced, in the pain he feels, physically and emotionally, shoot, unravelled ME!

I love how the ever sensible Laura tries to figure out what is happening to her around Dom, these feelings are alien to her (no pun intended!) this sums up those thoughts, "whatever I think I'm feeling is new. Attraction, yes, there’s no denying that, and something darker. Nameless, and formless" Laura thrives on being in control, Dom thrives on being controlled, a bit of a conundrum... So Laura concocts a plan to replace Dom's need for punishment with something different, something previously unattainable, something unheard of for his station. And with Laura's "intervention", Dom emerges like a butterfly from a cocoon, from confused, subservient, to his own person, unheard of in a clone. He's still wanting to please Laura but with a whole new set of.... skills, mental as well as physical.

But wow, I really wasn't expecting where Ms Tama took this story next! She frazzled my mind with Laura's newfound ability, she shattered the bindings holding my heart together and then she took my heart and stomped all over it! We go from Earth to Oloria once more but this time, it's even more dramatic, even more tense than before. I was in shock! I was in distress! And I swear, if I thought I loathed Samara before, well, F****CK! I'd happily euthanase HER! Just grrrrrrrrr! Flip! What she tried to do, what she tried to enforce... OMG!!! I applauded Ms Tama for her realistic account of a very insecure Laura, her internal strife and her personal growth. Yet again, Ms Tama took a turn that spun my head like a yo-yo, I was NOT expecting Arture to...to... OMG OMG OMG!!! Shocked I was, shocked I AM! I'll be drooling until the next book comes out!

I'm sure you've heard the saying "wear their heart on their sleeve", well, these aliens wear their hearts on their scales! Changing colour at every emotion. And though this is a steamy alien romance read, the message of tolerance, acceptance, and mutual respect resonates. Nicole couldn't have put it better, "Animals, people, aliens… it probably all comes down to the same thing. Choice, freedom, and respect. Give that, and you’ll get the best of them in return.” This was another superb book by Bea Tama, exploring real emotions and bias in a very unique way. It has really cool Legends of Tomorrow vibes, and I can't seem to get enough of these aliens!

Wow! This series just gets better and better. I absolutely LOVED Dom and Laura's story, and I totally adore how this author goes into the deeper psychology of anxiety in this volume. Add to that the complexities of Dom's psyschic abilities and his connection to the other two aliens in his triad, not to mention all the difficulties he has supporting Nevare, and I couldn't get enough!

The most beautiful takeaway though is the exploration for Laura's character about compartmentalization and control. We cannot control everything in our lives, and while that is scary it is something we have to accept. Not doing so, leads us down an impossible warren of compartments, trying to control separate aspects of life by breaking it down into smaller pieces and trying to keep it all separate. Utterly exhausting! But definitely something that resonated very powerfully for me. I think many of us have a tendency to want to break everything down into more manageable pieces, but the problem with life and ourselves as individual beings is that we cannot separate things so neatly. It's all a big muddled mess but it can be beautiful when we accept it all--the good and the bad mixed up into a messy batter.

Ha! I think I just got the perfect analogy. When life throws eggs, milk, butter, and flour at you, stop trying to separate them back into their constinuent parts, make waffles instead. ;)

Laura's life lessons in this novel, mixed together with the spicy alien romance and Dom, the sweetest sweatheart ever, made for a compelling read.

And the ending?! Never in my everloving dreams did I ever conceive of things going quite like that! I want to know what happens with Arture now! I need that next book like I need to breathe. The overarching storyline just ramped up. Ms Tama. NEED. IT. NOW (or yesterday)!

4 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐ really addictive universe with a slow-burn pairing

I read all three books in this series within a week, and the universe is honestly great - each book focuses on a return to Oloria for the main characters involved in the romance. The romances between the alien crew members and Ellen’s friendship group are delicious, and this installment fit perfectly into the series.

Border Control focuses on Dom, the law enforcer clone from the alien crew, and Laura, the lawyer from Ellen’s friendship group. Laura hasn’t been very present in books one and two, and this book finally explains why. She’s consumed by a major legal case, working under a horrible boss, and everything in her life revolves around winning. She genuinely has no space for romance.

Dom, on the other hand, struggles with the lack of structure on Earth. He needs clear orders and direction at all times, still feels uneasy around women, and believes he has to remain strong in order to control his wave brothers. Neither of them has time for a relationship, yet they somehow keep finding each other anyway.

I really liked this installment. There were noticeably fewer editing issues compared to books one and two, which made the story flow much better. And the ending? Absolutely delicious. I did not see it coming, and I can’t believe we have to wait for the next installment.

This is the 3rd book in the series & in this instalment we meet Laura (MFC) again, who has appeared in previous books but in support/minimal appearances. She is a totally in control, kick ass lawyer, that's taking no nonsense. She easily compartmentalises business from pleasure & works within that structure. Then you have Dom (MMC) who is a law enforcer clone, as an alien race they are subservient to females. he meets Laura when his vessel crash lands onto Laura's friends farm.

Dom thrives on structure & discipline. So, when he tries to integrate into the culture on earth he finds it hard to acclimatise due to the lack of structure on the planet, so when Laura meets him, she ends up putting control back into Dom's life - then finds herself analysing her feelings & why she like being in that role with him.

The character development for both main characters is engaging to see them establish a bond, plus their own personal journey of discovery is enlightening + beautiful to see.

There is spice that is spicing in this book, with 'a big nod' to a dominant/submissive dynamics. But, the story isn't just all smexy time it does dive into deeper topics of the psychology of anxiety, & the emotional need of Dom to be hurt. So, their is a storyline weaved in within the smut.

The world-building & descriptions of the clone culture is fabulous, I found the plot flowed quite well, a couple of places it started to slow down, but soon picked back up again.

I know many maybe put off by this being a Sci-fi, but don't think little green men, think hot-blooded, sexy, cloned aliens whose sole purpose is so make sure a women is wanting for nothing.... Now do I hear a HELL YES!! Overall it is a fab, fun, flirty sci-fi that will make your eyebrows raise & your toes curl.

Ahhh I was kinda worried that I wouldn't love this one as much as the first two because I didn't relate to Laura at first BUT by the end I was absolutely hooked and was cheering in her corner!

She's a feisty female on the outside but struggling with her internal battles...

And Dom!? I just wanted to give him a hug, he has the biggest golden retriever energy EVER!

The cliffhanger at the end!? OMG Beaaaaa how could youuuuuu!?

Cannot wait to read book 4!!!

I absolutely devoured this! I'm not usually one to like a submissive male but in this book it works perfectly! The relationship between the mc's and the side characters is just incredible! The author did a phenomenal job with this! The world building so that we learn how the world that the males come from is amazing! I can't wait for the next book!

Wonderful scifi romance series

The world building and culture of the clones is cool and explored more in this book. It’s slightly more spicy that the previous books, but still a slow burn with HEA. The overplot is moved forward a lot in this book and now I look forward to the resolution in the final book.

Good read

This book was somewhat confusing. The mind sync was difficult to comprehend. Almost too much happening at once. That being said, it was very good. Dom and Laura needed each other. And Erik and Nevare too! Enjoy

Honestly, the main couple’s dynamic was kind of tedious, and I really don’t care for sub/dom stuff being forced down our throats. The whole mind-connection thing was confusing, and while the FMC being a super power-hungry virgin with deep issues, heavy responsibilities, and a ton of trauma was interesting… I’m honestly really tired of the FMC virgin trope.

Also, there was this idea that the MMC, with his magical powers of submission, was the only one who could stabilize her and vice versa, and that just didn’t sit well with me. The whole book had the exact same plot as the first two, with the whole “we have to go visit our main planet and fight the evil enslavers” thing all over again.

I also kept wondering: WHY are these FMCs (the protagonists from each book) even friends?? They feel more like acquaintances. They barely interact, they’re never around each other, and I know this was happening at the same time as the second installment, but still, why was the other friend never around? Why did they never talk to each other?

What really got to me was that the FMC was working a case (a legal one) and suddenly chose to focus on exploring her sexual relationship with some random alien instead of, you know, the VERY important case, one that involved many people ending their own lives or having their lives ruined. I know it’s fantasy, but I genuinely couldn’t stop thinking: this is so stupid. Just stop going to the MMC’s place and focus, girl. People need you.

Sigh...It was just so frustrating that so many of the challenges the MMC and FMC faced were completely avoidable.

I honestly could not care about this book, and the immersion was completely lost. I only finished reading it because it was necessary to continue the series, you can’t read the next without reading this one. But by the end, everything felt mechanical. Like when the MMC says, “Oh, two of my crew aren’t into relationships, that leaves one, and there’s one female left (Nicole, the fourth friend).” But… that’s not really true, is it? If we’re being fair, the MMC from the next installment has plenty of other choices on Earth. I bet it’s going to be complicated.

I can't see myself continuing, especially since this story was very underwhelming and the next MMC already acts like a douche.

So, I’m stopping for now and I don’t recommend this book at the moment.
