A fateful meeting. A forbidden bond. A fight for the future.

When Adehl meets Roh under the summer-blue sky of the Humming Downs, they’re bound by ellir, the storm of energy in the heart of the world.

Adehl immediately wishes she’d delivered her horses and kept on riding. Roh is vibrant and magnetic, his soaring affinity for ellir impossible to resist. But he’s also in training to lead the nomadic Vuusah: if he discovers Adehl’s tainted blood, his brethren will quell her energy and destroy her empathic gifts forever.

Roh, entranced by the fascinating horse empathiser whose energy cleaves to his, defies orders to keep his distance and affirms their bond. Neither can deny their soul-deep connection, and soon the Vuusah are probing Adehl’s background, discovering her lies and demanding retribution.

From sweeping grasslands to an ancient harbour city, Adehl and Roh discover new truths and allies and foes, all exposing unjust Vuusah lore. While Roh wrestles with his loyalties, Adehl embarks on a path of secret rebellion.

But as the Vuusah close in, Adehl must choose: risk her life and Roh’s for the chance to forge a more inclusive future… or betray her conscience to save herself?

Steeped in humanity and hope, Beyond the Humming Downs is a socially conscious fantasy about taking quiet action to build a more inclusive world. Click now for an emotional journey of forbidden love, self-discovery and earth magic… with a dash of hopepunk, minimal violence and low spice.

I received a free ARC and provide this honest review, intended to inform readers about the novel and give enough information to assist them to decide if they would like to read it, without major spoilers.

Beyond the Humming Downs by Ellen Starsmore is a colourful feast of fantasy and love. I say ‘love’ because it’s more than romance; it is a deeper connection, real and genuine.

This is an original tale of lovers fighting their culture to be together, and discovering more about each other and the history of their people, and everything they’ve been taught to believe, along the way—with some big surprises.

Adehl and Roh’s journey takes them from the quiet rolling hills of the Humming Downs to the seaside city of Tarsah and across the ocean by ship to another bustling trade city called Dohni, where trouble finds them and—as if that isn’t enough—follows them from the Humming Downs too.

Some of the highlights of the novel are the rich textures, both spiritual and material: life-rhythms, land-spirit-magic, deeply awakened spirituality and connections, beautiful and empathic characters, fascinating clothing, hair and accessories; gorgeous intelligent horses, and a bustling city with fascinating amplifying artefacts.

Beyond the Humming Downs was a fast, easy read. The prose is tight, without wasted words or pages, and the story gets going on the first page, when Adehl and Roh meet. They get together quickly and it’s them against the world, and I really enjoyed this, rather than having to wait the whole novel for them to unite. Tension is maintained by the challenges they face together and apart, and the stakes remain high.

The themes and messages are relevant to contemporary times.
I really enjoyed this novel, and recommend it for lovers of fantasy and romance.

There is so much to love about this book, I'm not sure how to sum it up and point out everything that is amazing without giving spoilers or gushing like a toddler on a sugar rush. I'm gonna try to just keep it simple and urge you to just read the book and find out for yourself. You will absolutely not regret it.

Let's start with some sort of trope summary: we have forbidden love, found family, "touch her/him and die", fated mates, one bed/ship cabin, and a bit of a redemption arc. There's a sort of miscommunication, but it's less that than just extreme stubbornness and a bit of brainwashing.

Then there are the characters:

Roh, the next Atalah (a sort of spiritual leader type of person...sort of like an Arch mage, but with seemingly more of a religious type of connotation, and an extreme amount of power and significance in the Vuusah communuity)

Adehl, an exceptionally powerful empath with a very strong connection to the horses her clan breeds, and a potentially devastating secret about her past that could shatter her future if anyone were to find out

Frahto, Roh's best friend and a devout follower of the Vuusah precepts. He will do anything to ensure his best friend comes to his senses and maintains his position as Atalah-in-waiting, including trying to shatter the bond between Roh and Adehl.

The Vuusah are a nomadic band of horsemen who wield the Ellir--the magic of the Humming Downs--and perform various sorts of tasks with it. They are extremely adamant that only the pureblood Fiugreh peoples are capable of wielding the power, and any pidakah, or mixed-blood children, must have their affinity quelled, lest they go wild with the power. This is one of the major precepts of the Vuusah...and one that Adehl has very strong opinions on, for very personal reasons. When Adehl incidentally becomes bonded to Roh, circumstances take a very dangerous turn for both of them, and they fight to understand what is happening not only to themselves, but within the Vuusah community themselves. The Atalah is up to something, something big and something that involves Roh, but secrets are hard to draw from the hearts of those who wish them to remain hidden, and Roh wants nothing more than Adehl to be safe. Frahto's heart is breaking to lose the friendship he has held so dear to the pull of a woman that Roh has known for mere days, and will do anything to find a way to bring back his friend. The Vuusah aren't the only ones with secrets though, and Roh and Adehl find some interesting allies in their fight for freedom.

This story will pull your heart and emotions up, down, and spinning in wild circles as you watch the drama and magic between Roh and Adehl unfold, burn with the fires of hatred against those who will see them torn apart, and celebrate the love between them and their new friends and allies as they fight not only for their own freedom, but for those who have been constrained by the Vuusah precepts for far too long. The ending is not exactly happy, but it isn't bad either. Let's call it happy-ish. :-)

Adehl has been riding the Humming Downs with the Vuusah for 10 years, but when her father is injured she makes the choice to return home and leave the Vuusah. On her way she meet Roh, the Atahla-in-waiting, and everything she fought to conceal is wretched into the open and she is forced to flee to keep her llira. Roh must choose between the life that was mapped out for himand this women who challenges his every belief.

✨️ Lyrical writing with ebb and flow
✨️ A beautiful magic system that is nature/soul based with rhythm
✨️ Fated/soul bond romance that is forbidden
✨️ Incredible collections of cultural and social structures
✨️A deep and emotive read

Oh. My. God. It is so hard for me to believe that this is a debut book. The plot is perfectly fleshed out, there is a rich history of the land, complex cultures, and characters who are flawed and individual, each with separate beliefs, values and development. Honestly this reads as a seasoned author's work.

This story is absolutely stunning and showcases an incredible writing style that fits the story so perfectly. With a deep focus on the harmony of energy, the rhythm and hum of the ellir, the writing style matches this energy with lyrical prose and a rhythmic pace. The alternations between high stakes and low stakes scenes make you feel like the ebbs and flows that the characters would feel when connecting to the ellir.

But one thing is constant throughout and that is the emotive and visual imagery. From the first page I was hooked by this, and it carries on through both the world building and the character development. I became so attached to each character, even those whose POVs we didn't see, i celebrated with them, and mourned when they mourned.

As a fantasy lover I'm well acquainted with the world building issues of new words and terminology, and although I love a glossary, oh how I love a glossary, i beleive it should be an optional extra (especially if the glossary isnt actually in the book) and not something that needs to be studied before beginning to read, handy to be referred to if youve forgotten a term. The amount I needed it (especially in the beginning) was disruptive and could have been mitigated by in-character explanations, or footnotes. I would not have been able to understand too much of the important aspects of the story without the glossary which is unfortunate as this was the only reason I couldn't give the stars this story deserves. But for those wanting to read and are happy to refer to a glossary (provided on the authors website), this book is sure to be a winner for you!

I really was desperate to give this book 5 stars because everything about this book is practically flawless, but too often I felt like there was too much assumed knowledge about things that hadn't been explained. But the fact that this was made up for by sooooo many positives im giving it a rating ive never used before... 4.9 stars... As a debut book I'm astounded at how well it was written and I honestly can not wait to see how this author grows in the future!

This book...oh boy. How can I even put it into coherent words? It is very different from most fantasy novels I have read, and that is a good thing. It's about Adehl, who is an empath who can connect to the rhythmn of the earth and also horses (that tickled me because when I was a kid, I was obsessed with horses!). She is a rider with the Vuusah, but she has a secret - she is of mixed blood, and that is against their rules. When she meets Roh, the next-in-line to be leader of the Vuusah, they are not only captivated with each other, they are also soulbonded. So...this creates some serious, heavy conflict. Roh is put in direct opposition to his own order, and must risk his entire future for Adehl. And Adehl has to try to keep her secret...and I'm sure you can guess how that goes....

What follows is quite the adventure. I've not seen such lush, beautiful worldbuilding in a long time. It is clear that Ellen Starsmore spent a lot of time planning and creating this world down to the last detail. She has a glossary on her website, as there are quite a few terms that you might want to look up as you're reading. But you can infer some of them just from the context.

I really, really love a good love story filled with secrets, dilemmas, and what I call "character torture." And this one has it all. Roh and Adehl and also Roh's best friend, Frahto (who has a POV in the book) go through SO MUCH. So much conflict, tough decisions, heartwrenching things...I just couldn't imagine what could possibly happen next! Or if someone would betray someone else! Or if ....yeah, you're in for a ride. Seriously. And the ending?? Oh my goodness. Buckle up! It gets intense.

I was in the doctor's office, reading this, and I was called in and I couldn't....make myself....stop! But I had to. Then when I was done I went right back to it (I wasn't driving). I finished it. Right then and there. I mean once you get to a certain point...just forget about anything else! It's so well-written and Ellen has a few surprises up her sleeve!

Overall, I was amazed and impressed. When I first read the synopsis, I knew it'd be pretty special, but I wasn't prepared for just how....beautiful and compelling it would be. Wow. Just wow. The characters are so well-written, too, that you'd believe they were real people. I really thought I was reading a biography...that's how real and vivid the entire book was. I don't find books like that every day. Well done, Ellen.

I've heard that there are more stories coming and an epilogue, so I am very excited. Because she can't just stop here! This beautiful world demands more to be told.

I’ve had a hard time getting through most books lately, but this one broke that trend. Beyond the Humming Downs is a fast-paced tale of love against the odds in an immersive fantasy world.

Roh and Adehl are both engaging and enjoyable characters. Adehl’s determination to help others like herself, with impure blood, and Roh’s willingness to stand by her to a degree that rises above even their uncommon injaleh soul bond, put you on their side from the start.

The author does a great job of dropping you right into her world, immersing you in a culture revolving around the concept of ellir, the energy within the world, and those who have learned to connect to and use it. When Adehl meets Roh, a young man training to lead the Vuusah, the spiritual leaders of the Fiugreh clans, their injaleh bond sweeps them up, twining their souls together in a way they are powerless to deny. But when the Vuusah begin digging into her background for a way to shut down the relationship, things quickly unravel.

I found myself completely wrapped up in Adehl and Roh’s story to the point that I literally lost sleep a few times because I had to know what happened next. An experience I haven’t had in quite some time, and I adored it. Beyond the Humming Downs is an immersive read that will go by too quickly. With an inspiring romance, plenty of nail-biting tension, and a great story, I can strongly recommend this book.

There is minimal on-page spice and low violence, making it a very accessible read for most anyone.

Disclosure: The author is a friend.

I really enjoyed this book. It's a relatively small-scale fantasy, single-book and focused around a core group of characters. Having said that, the world felt lived-in and had depth. I'm not much of a romance reader, but while a relationship is central to the book, I wouldn't call it a traditional romance. The relationship between the two leads felt genuine and believable, but the book was as much about their relationship to the world around them as it was their relationship to each other. What I enjoyed most was seeing the way they adapted to their circumstance and found a way forward that was based on kindness, despite the prejudice and aggression of the people around them.

I found it took me a few chapters to get used to some of the terminology and settle in to what kind of a story it was going to be. But despite the relatively small stakes (no world-ending menace) I found it really picked up pace in the second half, as I became invested in the central characters (especially Adehl) and their plight.

I would definitely read further books in this world.

Self-published books can be a bit of a lottery. I thought the quality of the writing in this one was up there with any traditionally-published book, and I'd recommend it to anybody looking for a good character-based secondary world fantasy with heart and imagination.

As soon as I stepped into the world of Balhejni, I knew I wouldn't want to leave. The worldbuilding was unique, immersive, and gorgeously detailed. At its core is ellir, the wild storm energy plays a central role in the story and felt so real I found myself daydreaming about it. The romance had me, in turns, swooning, laughing, and desperately rooting for Adehl and Roh against the seemingly insurmountable odds they faced. (Also I have to give bonus mention to Jaikud the claithwielder, a side character whom I love with my whole heart,)

By the end, I was torn between wanting to defy bedtime to see how it ended, or slow down so it didn't have to end. (I went to bed very late that night lol)

I love fantasy that both provides an immersive escape from the present world and also offers hope and inspiration that worlds can be changed for the better. Beyond the Humming Downs delivered on this in every way.

This is the first fantasy book I have read for a while and I was totally gripped from beginning to end. The reader is taken on a journey with every page. I especially like the development of the characters and their relationships as well as the adventurous storyline. I cried near the end when Roh and Adehl were forced into a terrible and painful situation that did not go as I expected. And the brokenness of all the characters were real and believable. And yet it finished with hope and left me totally hanging for another instalment of this incredible world of ellir and adventure. Ellen Starsmore, please write another one!!

This novel is a gem for anyone who enjoys a richly built fantasy world with earth-connected magic and deeply layered characters. The story takes you on an adventure through a society full of cultural tensions and shifting alliances, all while exploring themes of friendship and challenging old beliefs. You settle into a beautiful world, connected with nature, before you're thrown into the adventure in far off lands. It quickly becomes a captivating and thought-provoking read where you want to read it up late to find out what happens. I loved the action, the stakes, the romance and the magic! Can't wait to read more from this Ellen Starsmore!

Beyond the Humming Downs is a beautifully written, character-driven story with so much hope, love and overall strong emotions. The story follows Adehl and Roh who are soul bound, and you mostly get told their pov. Adehl finds herself in some trouble and Roh decides to basically drop everything and help her. At first he does it because they are soul melded, but then he realizes that it is also the right thing to do. The magic is connected to the earth and is somewhat low key, but you can almost feel it with the characters.

This is not my typical type of sub genre but I still highly enjoyed this story.

Fantastic

Loved this book. Very well written. I was invested in the characters from the start. So human, and despite the fear and trepidation at times that things may not end well, the edge of hopepunk in the story kept me going. Can't wait to read more.
