Rate this book
From the heart of the Midnight Raven, a crime of passion is brewing.
Atticus Sharpe runs a tattoo parlor in the basement of the home he shares with his husband, Ernest. On the surface, they are simply and eccentric married couple in the suburbs of Pine Mountain, Georgia.

Once night falls, though, The Sharpes are contract killers with a thirst for vengeance, they arm themselves with gunpowder and a blade as they hunt down the monster who nearly took Ernest's life and the kingpin of the Atlanta Red-Light district who has him on a tight leash.
The only thing Atticus takes more seriously than his covenant to bloody revenge is his vow to Ernest.

I truly do not know how to start this review, I have typed it out, deleted it and then re-typed it out because this book was just mind blowing! This book will take you on an emotional roller coaster that you really won’t be able to get off of even at the end! I cried, I laughed, I wanted to fight so many people, I yelled at the character, and more!

This book will absolutely take hold of you and not let you go! And I know I do say that a lot, but I truly mean it! I know that these characters will not leave my brain for a long while! This pairing is absolutely breathtaking in their story is heartfelt and heartbreaking!

The writing is amazing and you will feel like you are watching a movie! Samantha Ransiers writing is very cinematic and it really paints a scene in your mind! If you want to book that takes you for a ride then The Importance of Loving Ernest is that Book!

Oh, where do I even start to express the overwhelming love I have for this book? The bond between Ernest and Atticus is not just deep; it’s a profound journey that tugs fiercely at your heart. You can’t help but utterly fall head over heels for this breathtaking couple. The author has woven a tapestry of trauma in its many forms, skillfully showcasing coping mechanisms that defy convention. My emotions surged as I found myself laughing one moment and then drowning in tears the next—I felt every heartbeat, every laugh, every sorrow. Did I mention that I sobbed? I cannot emphasize enough how much I adore this book. It’s an experience that lingers long after the last page has turned. But please, I urge you to check the trigger warnings, as it delves into some incredibly challenging themes.

The Importance of Loving Ernest (TIOLE) is a medium paced, MxM, romance that will have you screaming, crying, threatening murder, and loving the MMC’s.

Atticus (Atty) and Ernest (Nes) have a relationship that is what everyone wants. The way that their relationship pulls at your heart strings and you will be left heart broken, but by the end of the books you will be in love and swooning, again.

Favorite Quote: “You guys are simultaneously the most fucking adorable and fucking embarrassing bosses I have ever worked with.”

Please!!! Before starting, read the trigger warnings at the start of the book. While none of this is happening in real life, some might still find the topics discussed in TIOLE triggering.

This was an arc read for me, so I did receive an early e-copy of this book for free. My thoughts and review are 100% my own and are in no way swayed by the author.

Oh Atticus, what an amazing book boyfriend/husband. The love he has for Ernest is felt on every page, along with Ernest's love for him. I love the idea of being secret contract unalivers, and taking out those who deserve it. Ernest has a tragic past that Atticus does all he can to help alleviate some of that pain.

💕3rd person POV

Definitely check TWs before picking this book up!! This book was a bit of a difficult read just because of how it was formatted. It was a 3rd person POV, but it kept flipping between each of the characters, so like you almost know what's going on in each of their heads at all times? If that makes sense. So, this confused me a bit at the beginning of the story, but once I got the hang of it, I really enjoyed it!

Earnest (Nes) and Atticus (Atty) have been through sooooo much as a couple, both separately and together, and have an unbreakable bond. Told in dual timelines, the two meet in high school, where Nes befriends Atty, who has selective mutism. Through hardships, addiction, and honestly everything under the sun, the two form a strong bond and Atty vows to take out the people that hurt Nes when they were apart.

This story is one of healing, but it is quite a difficult road to get there. The two of them have been through A LOT and go through A LOT during this story, which may make it difficult for some readers, especially those sensitive to addiction and suicide, but such a powerful and beautiful story of healing.

Thank you to Sam for the eARC.

"and most of all, I will love you each and every day the way you deserve to be loved… deeply… wholly…completely. In every universe. In every lifetime… In every moment of every day"

Review

These two men captivated me from the very beginning.
Atticus may just have become my dream man I mean he quotes poetry, good in the kitchen (hmmmm chapter Garlic, roasted tomatoes and Olive oil) and adores Ernest ( Nes for short)

From a young age his life becomes a harsh reality that he cannot escape but his guiding light has been and always will be Atticus. They met at school when Nes learned sign language to befriend the dark haired boy with selective mutisim

Their love story is hard fought but oh so beautiful.
They fight for their love, their freedom and their dreams and I was cheering, crying and screaming for them to overcome the darkness that has become such a crippling pain for Nes
Atticus will do everything possible for his Nes but some actions wound his soul.

The care and dedication they have for each other jumps off the page and the author knows exactly when to lighten the mood before crushing us with another devastating twist or uplifting us with the most inspiring acts of love and devotion

The story once again revolves around The Midnight Raven and is my favorite of the 3 so far .

it gave me chills, tears, happy tears, angry tears
Yeah Samantha Ransier pulled every single emotion out of me in this book.

Be sure to check the TWs as there are dark themes throughout but this wise author also puts the disclaimer on each chapter that could trigger the reader. Such care and attention to detail is so very much appreciated

I was given an ARC copy of this book but my thoughts are my own and not influenced by the author

If Samantha writes it, I will read it - always!
Once again I have been gripped by the way she writes & the emotions it evokes (did I cry, yes I did! She does it to me every time)
Samantha writes about such difficult & traumatic experiences in such a delicate and respectful manner.

This is the tale of Ernest & Atticus. The companion, strength & love they have for one another jumps from the page. Neither of them have has the easiest start to life & truly, without each other those lives may have ended long before now. They are the epitome of ‘I would die for you’ kind of love. Their seemingly normal life of running Atticus’ tattoo shop is the light to the vengeance they seek in the dark to free Ernest from his monsters. It truly invokes the feelings of wanting to reach into the book & give them both the biggest hug!

I am beyond grateful once again to receive Samantha’s work as an ARC reader. At this point I think I would read her shopping list & be enthralled!

Before diving in, please check the TWs as there are some challenging themes & coping methods described, although the author handles these delicately I appreciate they would still be difficult for some to read.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5. What an amazing book. I went into this not knowing what to expect, only to end up becoming one of my favorite books of the year. I could feel many emotions while reading this, exactly what I look for in all books. It delivered every single thing it intended to, it was so good that I didn't even want to finish it soon because of how attached I grew to the characters. I'm still in awe at how much I loved this.

The story is about Ernest and Atticus, a married couple that have been in each other's lives for 12 years and met during highschool. Atticus runs a tattoo parlor in the basement of their house in the present. On the surface, they're a bit of an eccentric couple of husbands, very loving towards one another. But their night activities are tied to blood and weapons, working as contract killers that target the scum on earth. Both are looking for revenge towards the one person that made Ernest's highschool years a living hell. Unfortunately, no matter how hard they'll try to protect each other, the past will come haunting them, threatening to break their peaceful lives.

I don't remember what I thought I would find from the blurb alone, but it wasn't this. Maybe that the book would be have an inclination towards a "murder husbands" type of plot, gritty and rough. While it definitely has that element going on, the book is so much more.

I have to start my praises with the MCs. Both Atticus and Ernest were well constructed characters, individually and as a pair. The portrayal of Atticus's selective mutism and his experiences felt very real, which is partly a sad thing to say given that those weren't pleasant at times. Thankfully, his life changes when Ernest becomes his friend the day they met. Ernest has always had a vibrant vibe, standing up for justice and treating others nicely. Ernest became the light of Atticus' life and viceversa.

I think the core of this book is that their relationship was very beautifully portrayed. The amount of devotion for each other had me almost in tears, I don't find a loving couple like them in many books and I'm glad this has such an endearing dynamic. I loved seeing them being supportive no matter how hard things became, because ultimately - they care for the other the most. The strong connection between them was very sweet, they had me on a chokehold since the first pages. I adored following their journey, from the darkest moments they shared in their past, their daily married life in the present and their growth (separately and as a couple) into the future.

This book doesn't shy away from being heartbreaking. The angst was very well done, I could feel everything the characters did, and I find that very impressive. It's not often that a book makes me feel this much. The emotional component hit hard, and I live for books getting strong reactions out of me.

Another thing is that I really loved the addition of Sasha to the main cast. She was such an important support for both since the beginning, she had my heart from the second she appeared. I loved her friendship with Atticus and Ernest, how despite some painful shared experiences they were able to connect easily. I loved how Atticus also gained a friend, since he's usually the reclusive one, it was adorable to see him open to another person besides Ernest.

Apart from having many positive things, there were some little details that I believe could've been done better too, like toning down the repetition of certain characteristics to refer to one of the MCs ("tattooist" and "dark-haired man" were too common) and the ending of a minor character that didn't really sit right with me (Cole, I just ).

Overall, this book felt very satisfying. From beginning to the end, it has a lot of bumps during the road that hurt, but ultimately turned out very comforting. The love the MCs shared will stay in my mind for quite somemtime. Thankfully it looks like there will be a sequel, so I'm the happiest person ever. I'll miss these two until the next time.

I haven’t loved a couple this much since Lore Olympus. Atticus and Ernest have the most beautiful love story, the most intense partnership, and the most toe-curling steamy scenes. Although the book begins in present day, I was over the moon for the flashbacks that allowed us to see Nes and Atty grow together, from the first day they met in high school right up to their tear-jerker of a wedding ceremony.

For the love of God, read the trigger warnings. For every achingly beautiful glance between Ernest and Atticus there is a glimpse into the most disturbing facets of the human psyche. All of the books so far in Samantha Ransier’s Midnight Raven universe have dealt with human trafficking, vulnerable young people who stumble their way into a den of vipers and emerge with scars aplenty. The Importance of Loving Ernest is no exception to the other installments in this gripping, tragic world where everyone gets to see their small fragment of hope flourish and bloom against all odds.

I wouldn’t be quite honest, though, to give this a five-star review. Although Ransier’s storytelling, character and world-building are top-tier, the technical aspects of the writing are noticeably rough. The Atlanta backdrop isn’t as well-researched and integrated into the story as I’d like it to be and there are redundancies and awkwardly written exchanges throughout. There were also a few holes in Ernest’s and Atticus’s backstories that detracted from my enjoyment of the book as a whole. I firmly believe, though, that as Ransier continues to write and learn, her Midnight Raven series will be one that I rant and rave about for years to come.

So if you love a good MM pairing of true soulmates who give everything for each other, pew-pew-ing pedophiles, and a pretty well-done representation of bipolar I with psychotic features, run, do not walk to your online book purveyor and get lost in The Importance of Loving Ernest.

This is the third installment in the Tales Of Midnight Raven by Samantha Ransier. I throughly enjoyed their story. The character/ world building took you on an adventure that didn’t fall short. This is a dual timeline story that bounces from present to the past to help with the back story.

Atticus and Ernest, our MMCs, have such a beautiful relationship. Through trauma and pain, they overcame so much together. A very heartfelt journey that you get to experience as their story unfolds. There is strength, bravery, courage, love, patience, understanding, affection, and so much more that both men display.

I highly recommend this book! Just be sure to read all of the trigger warnings.

I didn’t know really know what to expect before reading this book. But any expectations I did have were blown out of the water with how amazing it was. This book is an emotional rollercoaster. With storyline that drew me in from the beginning and put me in a chokehold until the very end. I could not put it down. For me it was a very addictive read.

Atticus is a tattoo artist who runs his business from his house with the help of his eccentric husband Ernest. By nightfall both of them are contract killers, who hunt down those who deserve it.

Atticus and Ernest’s love for each other is just so pure and unconditional. Both characters have been through so much. Atticus thrives to do everything possible to make Ernest’s happy and ease his mental scars. The past trauma Ernest goes through will rip your heart out but Atticus’s undying love for Ernest will put it back together.

DNF'd before the 20% mark.

While the relationship between the two main characters seems idealized and romantic in a way that could potentially create a very passionate, emotionally-charged book, that was about the most connection I was able to get from them. I appreciate that an effort was made to quickly get us to the point where we really care about these characters, and the horrible things they've had to do and endure, but that's as far as I got before the technical aspects of the book made this too difficult to continue.

Character dialogue frequently forgoes the use of contractions, words are used incorrectly and capitalized randomly, and I found it very hard to suspend disbelief in thinking that someone would be trauma-dumping their troubled past to their new boss within five minutes of being hired.

The editing of this book (or lack thereof) is a weak point I can't ignore. There may be an extremely poignant story here, but unfortunately that'll have to be for someone else to discover.

I received an ARC for this book and I really enjoyed it!

This book took my emotions for a ride. I loved how the book was able to show how heartfelt the relationship between Atticus and Nes was. I really loved the relationship between these two because it was affectionate and cute! Atticus and Nes overcame so much in their lives together and they were always there for each other.

While this book was darker, I really enjoyed how they were able to see the light in the book. Their life seemed fairly normal with running Atticus’ tattoo shop but the darkness that Ernest had due to his monsters shown through in the story. I would highly recommend looking at the TW before reading!

Overall, this story was really good. This is the perfect example of “I would literally die for you” type of story. I love the connection these two have and how they are always there for each other.

This book had me in tears. Ultimately, it is beautiful love story, but Ernest and Atticus go through so many traumatic events it is gut wrenching at times. And the sad part is that these events are so believable because they happen to so many people. The other parts that keep you hooked are exactly what you may wish to happen to some of the bad guys. I enjoyed Samantha’s writing style, she explicitly provides a full understanding of all sides by providing flashbacks for each character. I also liked that the chapters were named, can we bring that back please? Look, I am so in love with this couple and their relationship is goals.

Please read this story, the tears are worth it in the end. We didn’t get a cliffhanger per se, but definitely a lead in for another book and I am definitely here for it.
Another amazing indie author!

Exceptional storytelling! Imagine for a second that the grittier, darker sides of life are the colors in an artist's pallette. This author is the artist who has used them to paint the darkness in words, that breathe, cry, laugh and dance in front of the eyes of the reader, pulling them into a maze of broken minds, twisted desires, fractured illusions and shattered dreams. Sometimes the best intentions lead to unexpected results and a simple wish unlocks a Pandora box, that couldn't be closed. Ernest's wish put him on the path of destruction with unimaginable magnitude, altering both his and Atticus lives. It was also a steep learning curve, testing the strength of their friendship and love for each other in so many ways, but the most impressive to me, was the character development. The story follows not only their life as a couple, showing the depth of the love they share and the beauty of the special bond they have forged through the years, but also how everything started when they were much younger. The two plot lines are utterly, captivatingly complementing each other, crafting a canvas of colorful bits and pieces - most dark but with splashes of light, woven into the fabric of who they are as people and how all the traumatic experiences have shaped their personalities and life choices.
In the silence of their special companionship, the cry of anguish and pain is so much louder and more impactful. But love also shines brighter, bolder, stronger when all that has happened has failed to tear its integrity. If Atticus was the shield, then Ernest was the core, protected behind it, both , equally important parts of the whole piece. The author has created something truly special, capturing it in a fictional story - an extraordinary love, a soul, divided into two bodies that have found each other, uniting the pieces in one.

I received this book as an ARC.. (I know I'm running late 😭) but I really loved this book. It really grabs you by the balls and makes you feel things. I cried many times throughout the book. It's unfortunately quite true to life which is rough... It also vaguely reminds me of Necessary Evils by Onley James which I adore. I love the evil for good premise... I feel so bad for Ernest. I couldn't even imagine going through what he went through... But at the same time, I really see myself in him. Trauma is a hell of a drug lol.

My only complaint is the author used the word "softly" so excessively, even my partner noticed when I was reading aloud. So maybe trying to find synonyms or something for it... It got a little grating. But that's really my only complaint. I otherwise found it beautifully written. It's quite poetic.

This was such an emotional book that I genuinely loved!! Words can't express how beautiful and amazing this was..I was literally and bashfully crying throughout reading this and it was very heartfelt 🥹🥹!! All the emotions was soo fragile and soo strong and conveyed through this book!! The loveand affection atticus and and ernests shared throughout this story was soo freaking cute that they passed through every single obstacle strongly and bravely trusting each other whole heartedly❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥!! Their love overcame everything they ever faced and they always managed to reach each other no matter the struggles they've been through!! I loved this book soo much compared to the other two 💖

This has just become my favorite read of 2025. These two wonderful men and their amazing relationship without which, what would have become of them. I love the way the author takes us back and forth to the beginning and the present, everything gets explained along the way. Nes's strength, Atticus's love it is overwhelming and so is Nes's trauma. I had my hand over my mouth so often as I cried, but then there moments of the sweetest love. Please read this book, but please read the CWs and the TWs to take care of your mental health.

This is book 3 in the Midnight Raven series. As always please be sure to read all of the trigger warnings as there are some heavy subjects covered in this story.

This story is full of so many emotions and twists and turns. I had a hard time putting it down. Samantha has such an amazing writing style that brings out her characters emotions throughout the whole story and it has you wanting so much more. Her characters are so easy to fall in love with and relate to.

Book 4 is coming soon and I absolutely cannot wait to see what is in store for us next.

Of the three books currently from The Tales The Midnight Raven, this one might be my favorite.

Atty and Nes have such a complex and beautiful connection. While their story is dark, it’s wonderful how they found the light in one another. I love stories with queer protagonists and this one also includes mental health representation.

I want to protect Nes and Atty at all costs, but I know there is more to their story. I’m excited to see where they go and how they grow together.
