The Couple Before Us

Rate this book
‘Something terrible happened to the couple who lived here before…’ My hands shake as I read the warning note I’ve just found hidden in a forgotten corner of my brand new house. My husband told me we’d be the first people to live here. Did he lie?

Moving to this gorgeous house was meant to be a new start for our family. My hand rests on my growing baby bump as I walk through our home, the smell of fresh paint in the air, but my heart no longer feels full of hope for the future.

My husband Christian wraps his strong arms around me and tells me to forget the note; he wants this to be the perfect home for us. But as I look into his blue-grey eyes, I wonder if there’s something he’s keeping from me or if I’m just being paranoid.

Was there a couple who lived here before? And what happened to them?

I try to forget my worries like Christian asked, but then I see something in our next-door neighbour’s garden that I can’t ignore. I know I need to find out the truth if I’m ever going to feel safe again.

Except when I overhear Christian revealing a secret on the phone, I start to do I even know the man I married?

As I get closer to the truth of what happened to the couple before us, I realise one I should have run when I had the chance…

Gripping, thrilling, twist filled, and shocking, Daniel Hurst has delivered yet again with The Couple Before Us! Seriously, when does he not? This is the 19th book that I have read by Daniel Hurst, and he never fails to deliver a gripping, twist filled, entertaining, and well thought out book! Just when I thought I had this book figured out, Daniel Hurst delivers a zinger of a twist, and I left dazed and amazed!

Moving is never easy especially when pregnant, but Dionne, her husband Christian and their five-year-old son Kai have moved into their new home. It's not the dream home that Dionne imagined raising her children in, but Christian is excited, and she is pregnant, so she goes along with it. But then she finds a note informing her that something bad happened to the couple who lived in the home before her family. Her husband tells her not to worry and that they are the first people to live in this home, but she can't help but wonder if he is hiding something. Then another person mentions the couple who lived there before them before he is quickly pulled away....

Who is telling the truth? If someone lived there before them, why lie about it?

The Couple Before Us is full of mystery and a sense of dread. Dionne knows something isn't right, but can't quite put her finger on what? She knows that she is not being told the truth and is not willing to let sleeping dogs lie. The foreboding in this book was like a pot bubbling over the top as the tension boils out of control! I thought I had a handle on what was going on but them BAM Daniel Hurst threw in another twist and reveal. There are quite a few of them in this book which kept me guessing and turning the pages! Things get a little OTT in the best possible ways. I enjoyed the mounting suspense and sense of danger as the book progressed.

Wonderfully written, well thought out, shocking, and hard to put down!

The Couple Before Us by Daniel Hurst

Thoughts
I really wanted to be wowed with this one like his other reads but unfortunately this one didn't quite do it for me-- the twists were there as every Daniel Hurst book he manages to catch you off guard in a subtle way -- at least with this one I thought I figured it out 100% but I didn't think of the other part and I absolutely love this about his writing style ( don't wanna speak too soon though)🤣 however in the middle/build up to the ending it did slow down I wasn't as invested -- I say this cause I'm usually unable to book the book down with this author but nonetheless I enjoyed this read and it's always a pleasure to be one of Daniel Hurst's first readers

Plot Summary
Dionne and her family are excited to move into a new home with a baby on the way -- that is until she finds a note in the wardrobe saying that something happened to the people who lived in the new home before them even though the estate agent had told them nobody has lived there before

Many thanks to NetGalley and publishers for the ARC

A couple of comments about "The Couple Before Us":

1) The first 75% of this "Was there a couple living in our new house before us?" book was painfully S-L-O-W and annoyingly repetitious.

2) IMHO, prolific author Daniel Hurst needs to focus on quality and not quantity.

Although I enjoyed the book's final twist, this book was not in the same league as many of the author's earlier releases.

I listened to the audiobook, expertly narrated by Clare Corbett.

Daniel Hurst once again delivers an edge-of-your-seat thriller. This book had me reading late into the night. I was addicted! It’s fast-paced with countless shocking twists and turns. The plot is unpredictable with a constant sense of foreboding. I recommend having time set aside for reading because once you start, you won't be able to stop. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early copy of The Couple Before Us by Daniel Hurst. It will appeal to readers who enjoy a domestic thriller with plenty of twists and an unpredictable ending. This was a comfortable, easy read, evenly paced, and the plot flowed well, but it tended to be far-fetched. It was a gripping read, but the tension and suspense were mainly derived from Di's perspective.

The main character, Dionne (Di) was incredibly annoying. She is married to Christian and they have a 5-year-old boy, Kai. She is heavily pregnant with another baby on the way. They are presently staying in a hotel and are desperate to move into a spacious new home before their second child is born. Christian has found a new, modern home in an exclusive development. There will be a backyard for Kai to play, a room of his own and a nursery for the baby. Dionne complains that it is too modern and prefers an older home that has already been lived in, stressing that an older house would have more character. Since time is running out, she consents to move into the brand-new, modern home with her family, but she is not happy with the decision.

While unpacking, Di discovers a note in a closet. It refers to a couple who lived there before and seem to be missing. Christian insists they are the first people to live in the house and to forget about the note. Is he lying? The note contributes to Di's unpredictable, unhinged, and hysterical behaviour. She imagines sinister forces everywhere and views the neighbours suspiciously. For example, she sees a neighbour crying over the fence in the backyard. She imagines that her boyfriend is cruelly abusing her. When the woman goes away, perhaps he has killed her. She thinks the couple were connected with the disappearance of the people who were previously in Di's and Christian's home. Di is determined to discover what happened to them, fearing that the note was a warning that her family may face a similar fate.
She confronts the estate's manager, Cesar, who also insists that her family is the first in the house, and that someone, possibly the builders, has played a prank on them. At a neighbourhood gathering, she meets an elderly man who confirms that a couple did live in the house. Cesar interrupts, saying the man has dementia.

For a woman soon to give birth, Di acts in a paranoid, frantic, and irrational manner. Her inner monologues are dramatic, overwrought and paranoid. She runs around, rescuing people, breaking into houses, hiding under beds, wandering around after dark, and alienating her neighbours. She makes a couple of unsuccessful calls to the police, angering Cesar. Any appearance of crime will drive down the value of the homes. Her husband does little to stop her antics. They find a hidden camera in their new home. Who is watching them and why?

There is a well-known saying: "Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get you." Does this apply to Dionne?

In an action-packed finale, we learn that her family, especially her son, are indeed in danger. This has been mainly due to her irrational behaviour. The solution to the mystery is unpredictable, but looking back, some clues can be discerned. I would be interested in trying more books by the author. The book is scheduled to be published on July 17, 2025.

3.5 stars. I seem to have a love/hate relationship with Daniel Hurst. His stories are always page-turners, although I often find the plots implausible, the pacing uneven, and the twists too OTT. I liked this one better than others I've recently read, as it was less predictable, with a constant sense of foreboding. With an intriguing premise, mounting tension, and Stepford Wives vibes, I couldn't guess where the story was going. But there were still several eye-rolling moments, too much repetition, awkward phrasing and a big reveal that was unrealistic. The author's books have been mostly 3-star reads for me. If he would focus more on character development, less repetition, and tighter sentence structure, it would bump up my ratings.

When you think you know the new neighborhood where you’re moving to, think again! Daniel Hurst manages to once again blow my mind, especially with the ending of this book. What can this man not write? I’ll add this to my pile of 4 star reads by him. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review. Onto my next Hurst book ….

Well I certainly didn’t see that plot twist coming, and I can truly say that I had no idea what was going on until it was revealed. I enjoy seeing the story unfold as Daniel hurst built a level of suspense that definitely keeps you wondering what is going on in this suburban neighborhood, and where is “The Couple Before Us”? The story was well written, and the author did a good job of diving into the complex complexities of each character. Overall a decent read that fans of domestic thrillers, with quite a few twists and turns may enjoy. I will be reading more from his catalogue, this was my second read by this author and have enjoyed them both overall. Thank you Bookouture and NetGalley for this advanced reader copy. All opinions are my own.

Pregnant Dionne (known as Di), her husband Christian and their five-year-old son Kai have just moved into a brand new house in an exclusive estate (this isn’t an American book so I’m guessing that means neighborhood?). Di didn’t like it - it’s so modern, so cold, so different than the cozy house she wanted. Christian eventually talks her into it though, and since she doesn’t want to have a baby while they are living in a hotel, the book starts with moving day.

While unpacking, Di finds a note in a closet, saying that the house isn’t safe, and something terrible happened to the people who used to live there. She immediately confronts her husband, as he told her this was a new build that nobody else had ever lived in…then they meet Cesar, owner of the estate, and he assures her it must be a prank from one of the builders. They meet an elderly man at the (mandatory?) monthly get-together, and he starts to ask them about the couple who lived in their house before them, but Cesar quickly guides him away and apologizes for the man’s dementia.

They also meet Theo, who lives next door. His partner’s name is Hayley, and he tells Di that she’s very shy. One night, Di hears crying in their yard, but when she asks Hayley if she’s okay, Hayley runs inside. That’s when the neighborhood really starts to freak Di out. Cesar is a creepy man, and their neighbor Theo and the rarely-seen Hayley are an odd pair. Why does the estate have air-raid sirens? Why does Cesar seem to be everywhere at once? Why does it feel like someone is always watching? And who lived in the house, if anyone, before them?

This is a fantastic thriller that, at times, starts to lean into the horror category (which I love!) While the books are nothing alike, it made me think of Stephen King’s “Needful Things” (I cast Cesar as Leland Gaunt in my head because of his smooth manipulation), and Bentley Little’s “The Association” (I don’t think the estate has an HOA, but it’s that same feel). The big twist really shocked me - I definitely didn’t see that one coming. The ending was a bit abrupt, but it was decent. Overall, this was one entertaining novel. I’ve only read a handful of books by this author, but I’ve enjoyed them all and look forward to more! 4.5 stars.

(Thank you to Bookouture, Daniel Hurst and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. This book is slated to be released on July 17, 2025.)

If you haven’t read this authors books before I would say choose this to start with…its very typical of the author in the way it is chapter then question mark/cliffhanger and also in the way the book takes ordinary characters doing ordinary life things that turn into chaos…..plus this one is tense from the start and is built around a new housing estate and the person who owns the land and new neighbours etc, what more could a reader want

It’s a very moreish read and I was stopping myself flicking the pages forward as so wanted to find out the secret (s) that were ongoing and were the baddies really baddies etc

We all know the author writes brilliant thrillers and psychological jeopardy brilliance but this one stands out even amongst all the other greats as an awesome read

2.5⭐️s rounded down
I thought the premise of the story interesting and the stress of moving into a new home something I could relate to but I found Dionne, the main character to be very annoying and unhinged to the point it feels very unrealistic and farfetched . I also felt the rest of the characters were boring and I just didn’t like them.

When a family of three soon to be four move into a brand new estate it was suppose to be a new start for the family. When Dionne finds a disturbing note while moving into her new home, her husband dismisses it and thinks she is just being paranoid. Dionne tries to do some digging to find what this disturbing note means. Was there a couple who lived here before? And what happened to them? When the truth starts to unfold she wishes she never stepped foot into her new home.

I usually enjoy Daniel Hurst's books, however this one fell very flat for me. I powered through it but I was just not interested.
This lacklustre story centers around Anne couple who move into a new build estate and the wife discovers a note which warns them about something having happened to the couple who lived in the house before. considering they are supposed to be the first who live there, alarm bells ring and the wife goes on a mission to find the truth.
The truth is that the plot is weak. The wife is too obsessed over what seems trivial really. Yes she ultimately discovers 'something' but the reasons behind it all are so weak it's almost laughable, that anyone would go to the extreme lengths because of 'that'.
An easy read and passes the time, however I'm sure I will quickly forget all about this book relatively quickly unfortunately.
Daniel Hurst has much better books than this one.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for early access to this ebook in exchange for my honest review.

This was my first novel by Daniel Hurst, and while I did enjoy the overall premise, I have to admit the writing didn’t quite meet my expectations. It felt a bit underwhelming at times — the pacing and tone sometimes veered into awkward or unbelievable territory, which pulled me out of the story. That said, I still found myself strangely compelled to keep reading, wanting to see how it would all unfold.

The setup is undeniably intriguing: a mysterious warning note hidden in a brand-new home, a pregnant wife starting to question everything, and a husband who may or may not be hiding something. It has all the classic ingredients of a domestic psychological thriller. I appreciated the tension and twists, but the execution didn’t always hit the mark for me. Some of the plot elements felt a little odd or forced, which made the storyline wobble.

Still, fans of fast-paced domestic suspense might find this an entertaining, if slightly uneven, read. I can see why Daniel Hurst is a bestselling author — the hook is strong, and the book is undeniably readable. I may give another of his titles a try to see how it compares.

[arc review] I really wanted to enjoy this book but found myself having to push through to see how it ended.

‘the couple before us’ follows dionne as she and her family move into a new home, being sold it as ‘the first people to ever live there’. when they move in, dionne finds a mysterious note in a wardrobe that says something bad happened to the previous tenants. but when dionne moved in, the estate agent said the house is new and nobody has lived there before. so what really happened?

for me, it felt like I was being told over and over what the character was doing, or going to do, rather than leaving that up to my imagination. at times it was overly explained that I wanted to skim to keep going.

the fmc was totally unlikeable. and while you can see she really tried to get to the bottom of the mystery, she was acting erratic and irrational. dionne was acting out of impulse and not thinking through her actions, and while it’s necessary for the main character to act out in a thriller, it felt more like stupid attempts for the plot to unfold as the story goes on.

the big reveal at the end didn’t make sense. it felt like the author chose it in a way to shock the readers into a ‘I bet you didn’t see that coming!’ but usually it’s foreshadowed so when you go back, the signs were always there. there was no indication it would go that way, so it fell flat.

ultimately there is an audience for this book, specifically people who like fast paced thrillers with shocking plot twists. unfortunately, I am not one of them.

This book just didn’t really do it for me. I felt like a lot of the information in the book was repetitive and descriptive in ways that it did not need to be. Although I feel like it was suspenseful, I don’t think the ending pulled everything together and I wasn’t “wowed” by it. Thank you to NetGalley & Bookouture for the ARC of this book.

⭑ ⭑ ⭒ ⭒ ⭒
2.5

♰ This book is basically divided into three emotional stages: the beginning (annoyed), the middle (hopeful), and the end (confused and tired). All of them contributed to my final rating.

ꨄ︎ The beginning (2 stars)

ᝰ.ᐟ Here we’re stuck in the head of the female main character, Dion, and she’s sorry to say an insufferable twat

ᝰ.ᐟ From the jump, her whole “I want a house that creaks and has slanted wardrobes because it has character” thing came off as painfully pretentious. But okay, personal preferences. She later agreed to move into the house because her baby in the womb told her to (sure 🫩) Then came the moving day and… wow. She made everything about herself, genuinely bringing the spirit down which just generally just irritated me.

ᝰ.ᐟ Then she finds a cryptic letter in the house. Cue: the paranoia. And look, I love paranoia in thrillers when it’s done right. But here? It felt manufactured. Not unsettling or immersive, just forced.

ᝰ.ᐟ For example, she hears her neighbor crying, knocks on her door, they don’t answer, and she suddenly jumps to “her boyfriend is an abuser and or maybe she’s crying because of something that has to do with the secret behind her house” levels of panic. It’s a wild leap. That’s kind of the whole first 40–50% of the book. she overreacts to everything, and her inner monologue is so dramatic, it took me completely out of the story.

ꨄ︎ the middle- 3 stars

ᝰ.ᐟ In the middle, her character calms down (slightly), and the mystery starts to take shape. For a moment, I thought this was going somewhere. I almost gave this part 3 stars.

ᝰ.ᐟ Even though I still didn’t enjoy being in her head, the plot itself had some potential and felt like it was building toward something solid.

ꨄ︎ the end (1.5 stars)

ᝰ.ᐟ Mind you, Dionne is about 7-8 months pregnant( I presume from how big her belly is) but somehow she’s out here rescuing people, breaking into houses, evading danger, running around like Lara Croft? Be serious. It was already so unrealistic then the ending happened… and yikes.

ᝰ.ᐟ The “twist” was so unrealistic, it shattered what little goodwill I had. It felt like a soap opera, not a thriller. Absolutely ridiculous and wildly underwhelming.

ꨄ︎ In the end, I gave it 2.5 stars. I think for most people, the biggest issue will be Dionne. If you can tolerate or even enjoy her perspective, you might get more out of this book than I did. But if you find her grating from the start, just know it doesn’t get much better.

Thank you Netgalley and Bookoutre for this arc. All thoughts belong to me.

I'm a fan of Hurst thrillers which always feature original plots and interesting characters. This book has one of my favorite type of plots: everyday people that get caught up in a strange situation. Dionne, her husband Christian and their five year old son have just moved into a brand new housing development. Dionne is seven month's pregnant and did not like the idea of moving into a new 'cookie cutter' type house but her husband insisted. Dionne hasn't even finished unpacking when she finds a strange note in a closet, a note that says another couple lived in the house before and she and her family are in danger. This starts a number of strange things that happen in this subdivision and Dionne is desperate to find out what is going on even as husband tells her she is imagining things.

I don't know how British housing works but apparently Dionne and Christian bought this home but they have to answer to an estate manager who checks on them constantly and even demands they attend a community party the first Saturday of the month. He even sets off alarms demanding people leave their homes at his whim. When Dionne sees the woman in the house next door crying in the garden and then seems to disappear, she is convinced something bad is going on.
I enjoyed the fast pace of the book and was crazy curious as to the cause of the mystery but much of the story was so unbelievable, it was hard for me stop rolling my eyes. Seven and eight month pregnant Dionne is breaking into people's homes constantly and running and hiding under The final twists in the book didn’t make sense although I was happy that the biggest trope was a red herring. Liked the set-up here but wasn't thrilled with the ultimate answers to the mystery. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this ARC for review.

In true Daniel Hurst fashion, he delivered a fast paced, domestic psychological thriller that had me turning pages faster than I could read.

“The Couple Before Us” followed Dionne and Christian a newly wed couple who moved into a beautiful new-build home in a freshly developed estate. While settling in, Dionne discovered a mysterious note hidden in a closet: it warned that “something terrible happened to the couple who lived here before us”—though Christian insisted they’re the first occupants. Strange occurrences started to happen and Dionne grew increasingly paranoid. As Dionne investigated, she realized that danger was closer than she had imagined.

A few aspects I liked was the pacing and the unsettling emotional impact. In all of Hurst’s books, the pacing is fast with short chapters including the most likable and unlikable characters. I also liked how Hurst instills a chilling, spine tingling atmosphere and creepy tension.

A few aspects I didn’t like were the underdeveloped characters and repetitive inner monologue. The characters were not well developed and had rather shallow personalities. In fact, the dialogue relied heavily on Dionne’s inner dialogue and it became rather annoying and exhausting as the narrative progressed.

Altogether, Daniel Hurst’s “The Couple Before Us” was entertaining but didn’t necessarily bring anything fresh to the psychological thriller genre.

I am so happy that Hurst writes several books a year, because I always know I will get a fun psychological thriller that will satisfy me and be read in an afternoon.

An expecting couple move into a new home even when one of them has reservations! What is about listening to your gut?

The new housing area has an overbearing resident and requires several things of its members. If you have ever been part of a homeowner’s association, there are rules you have to follow, BUT This is so WORSE!

With secrets, demands, lies and more this new neighborhood packs a lot of action behind the SCENES!

Dionne and Christian, expecting their second child in a few months, need to move into a larger home. She acquiesces to her husband’s desire to move into a brand-new estate home, despite qualms about it. However, her life takes a terrifying turn when she finds a chilling note that says “something terrible happened to the couple who lived here before”. As she delves deeper into the mystery, she realizes she can trust no one.

Hurst fans will welcome this new addition to his body of work. I have read some of his books, which I characterize as “popcorn thrillers”, enjoyed the Doctor’s Wife series, and chose this one because the premise intrigued me.

At first, I wondered if this book was really for me. I initially found the main character quite annoying. However, I compulsively forged ahead and was glad I did. At about the halfway point, the suspense and action accelerated, and I didn’t put the book down until all the twists, turns, and secrets were revealed.

If lighter, fast-paced, fun, escapist suspense reads are for you, check this one out.

Another ARC read. I really enjoy this authors writing style, he writes like Freida McFadden and I love how engaged and hooked his books are. I was immediately hooked in on this book, I really love when a book has family drama. In relation to the twist, I wouldn’t say it was a wow moment for me. This book more tied together nicely rather than made me gasp. Overall, worth the read.

I've been lucky to have read a few of Daniel's book before this and he always manages to knock them out of the park, so when I was gifted this book I couldn't have been more excited. His book always seem to grab the readers attention and his plotlines are so unique that it's impossible to put down and this book was no exception. The flow of this book was exceptional and I really liked how the characters were written. Right from the beginning this book had a huge sense of mystery the only got stronger as the story progressed. I loved how captivating the plot was and the characters just added to the fascination. With short chapters it really let you five into the plot and helped keep the reader entertained. When our main character Diaonne finds her dream home she is super excited. It is everything she dreamed of for her, her husband and their new bundle of joy on the way. To make it even better it is a brand new home with no history of previous owners. Diaonne is thrilled and can't wait to get her family out of the hotel and into a place they can call theirs. It isn't until she starts unpacking however that she finds a mystery note hidden from the previous owner. But how could that be? Not only does this start to ring alarm bells but when the previous owners are missing it really sends a dark chill over Diaonne. She is desperate to get to the bottom of what is really going on and hellbent on protecting herself but also her family. I loved all of the tension from this book and I found myself desperate for answers, all the while hoping for the best for our family. There was so much going on in this story but it was very easy to follow and get lost in. I loved every minute of the plot because it was unlike anything I had read before and the writing style was one that continually left me forgetting all sense of time as I got lost in the words on the pages. Each chapter was jammed pack with tension apprehension and fascination and I found myself holding my breath as the story progressed. This story will have you questioning everything and everyone. Who is lying? Who is telling the truth? And what really happened in that house? There were so many twists in this book I never knew what to expect however that it was made it such a great read. Fantastic job and I can't wait to read more by this author. This was unlike anything I've ever read before or ever will read again. This is a story that will leave you breathless and desperate for answers but also a book that you never want to finish. I loved every minute of this book and I feel that thriller readers will devour this book. I can't wait to read all of the positive reviews that I know this book is destined to receive once it is released.

I was drawn to the premise of this book: a brand-new house in a suburban setting, but full of secrets and mysteries, with the female main character (FMC), Dionne, determined to uncover what’s happening and what happened before. The setup sounds promising for a thriller, but unfortunately, the execution fell short for me.

Dionne, the FMC, is an incredibly frustrating character, a stereotypical “Karen” who gets on my nerves from the beginning to the end.

Typically, I root for the FMC or main character who senses something is wrong early on, cheering them on because their instincts are usually correct. But not this time. Even when Dionne’s suspicions were validated, I couldn’t bring myself to care.

It’s not her paranoia or anxiety that bothered me; those traits are common in thrillers, and I’ve read enough to know that a “hunch” often proves right to some degree. However, Dionne’s handling of situations is maddeningly irrational and unhinged.

Her decisions feel less like plot-driven choices and more like contrived stupidity to drive the story forward. I no longer enjoy books that rely on a FMC’s hysteria or poor judgment to drive the narrative.

While I don’t expect Dionne to be a Sherlock Holmes, I wanted her to act like a reasonably competent adult. The more I read, the less I could tolerate her, even when she was proven right.

The story itself has potential, particularly around the 69% mark, where a twist caught my attention and briefly rekindled my interest. However, the characters undermined the experience. Dionne’s erratic behavior aside, none of the supporting characters were likable, memorable, or engaging. Flawed characters can add depth, but when a character like Dionne has no redeeming qualities, they become simply irritating.

The writing style is straightforward, which I appreciated as a non-native English speaker, as it made the book easy to follow. However, the prose and dialogue often felt bland. Some conversations are quite odd and don’t flow naturally.

Overall, this book wasn’t for me due to its unappealing characters and lackluster dialogue.

While the plot and twists held some intrigue, the disappointing ending left me unsatisfied. Readers who enjoy fast-paced thrillers with dramatic twists might still find something to like, but the character-driven issues were too significant for me to overlook.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with the opportunity to read this book in advance.

The Couple Before Us is an action packed thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end! Daniel Hurst is known for these gripping thrillers and this one does not disappoint! The twists and turns just keep on coming and you'll get whiplash trying to keep up. Yes, the book is really good! Dionne, her husband Christian, and their 5 year old son Kai are moving into a new house in a new development. Christian is excited for the move, but Dionne wishes for a house with more personality. This house looks like every other on the street and is too modern for Di's taste. She sees how excited Christian is and her son loves the yard, so she agrees to the move. Di is 6 months pregnant with their baby girl and they need to find a home soon and be settled before the baby comes.

As Di is unpacking, she finds a note that says something bad happened to the couple who lived here before. Christian told Di that they were the first to ever live in this house, so this can't be true can it? As Christian works hard to reassure Di, she feels uneasy about the note. Is Christian telling Di the truth? Why would he lie to her? At a barbecue for the community, another person mentions a previous couple to Di. The man asks her what happened to them? What is going on? As he's talking to her, the head of the development pulls the man away. Di finds the entire thing so odd. Di takes it upon herself to dig into this further because she's sure she's being lied to. Will Di discover what's really going on? Are she and her family in danger? Is the new house really new? Is the new community safe? This book will keep you guessing until the shocking end. I rate The Couple Before Us 4 stars with a high recommendation. When you start this book be prepared to lose several hours until you finish it. I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of The Couple Before Us in exchange for a fair review. #TheCoupleBeforeUs

Going into this book Daniel Hurst was a new to me author, however I had heard of him, so I wanted to give a book of his a go. And I am glad I did.
One thing I did really like about this book was how we jumped right into the story. I didn't have to read 100 pages until something happened. Right from the first page the story took off.
I found this whole book to be such an easy read, I flew through it and it is definitely the kind of book you could read in one sitting. The pacing was spot on and it did make me want to keep turning the pages.
The writing style I have to say was basic and simple, nothing impressive but it was enjoyable.
But I wasn't a big fan of the main character Dionne. I found her to be written like she was a paranoid, hysterical woman (you can tell this was written by a man!) and I found the choices she made did have me rolling my eyes.
The plot was over the top and ridiculous and you do have to suspend your disbelief and just go with it.
I did have an enjoyable time reading this book and it definitely falls into the light, binge able, popcorn psychological thriller category and I would read from this author again.
This is one for fans of Frieda McFadden.

"The Couple Before Us” by Daniel Hurst is a twisty 4-star read! Dionne, her husband Christian, and their son Kai move into a brand new estate, hoping the extra space will be perfect for the baby on the way. But when Di discovers an ominous note, she starts to suspect that the house may not be as new or as safe as it seems. Despite the increasingly dangerous situations she faces, Di is determined to uncover the truth.

In typical Daniel Hurst fashion, this is a fast-paced story packed with twists, maybe even a few too many. Some parts of the story were confusing at first, but as it progressed, the odd behavior began to make sense. At times, Di’s actions didn’t feel entirely believable for a pregnant mother. Still, I enjoyed the book and will definitely keep reading whatever Daniel Hurst writes next

Thanks to Bookouture, Daniel Hurst, and NetGalley for providing me with the opportunity to read this ARC and share my honest review.

I’ve been a fan of Daniel Hirst’s books for a while so was keen to read his latest novel, The Couple Before Us. Initially, I found this to be more of a gripping slow burner than a seat of your pants thriller, but once I got to the second half of the book, I felt the tension ramping up and with the added twists it was impossible to put down. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the chance to review.

This one will be the right read for Freida McFadden fans. (Which i am not)

Fast paced, full of action, some mind confusing twists.
Although i liked the action and possible motives for it, the lack of smart characters were overwhelming. Too much bad choices for a woman in Di's condition.

This was an okay read suited for warm summer evenings, an easy read.
