To Dwell in Shadows: A Shadows of Aurelia Novel

Rate this book
Samael and Selene’s journey continues into the sinister depths of the Underworld, where Sam’s search for redemption becomes a battle between duty and desire.

When Selene left her dull life in the human world to be with her demon mate, she was determined to thrive on her own terms. As a recovering people-pleaser, Selene was ready to build a life with Samael in the realm of Aurelia, free from the expectations of others. Yet, she soon realizes that being the fated mate of a demon comes with more than passion, as a trip to the Underworld forces her to question everything she knows about herself… and her abilities.

After decades of loneliness, Samael is ready to heal from his traumatic past. With Selene at his side, he is certain that a reunion with his parents in the Underworld will bring only joy and closure. Although his birthright as prince carries responsibilities, he’s not interested in the web of dark politics that permeate his father’s royal court. But untangling himself from the ambitions of his parents proves more difficult than he thought, especially when they want to strip him of all that he gained in Aurelia—including Selene.

Sam and Selene defied the odds to be together, but can they stay true to themselves in a realm of chaos? Bridging the gap between what was and what’s to come, this story races toward a breathtaking cliffhanger that will change everything.

Oh my gosh what a read! To Dwell in Shadows is book two in this series and follows Selene and Sam (resident demon daddy) as they traverse the underworld, the politics, the scheming, and betrayal while still trying to be themselves. I met characters I thought I’d hate but ended up loving and wish I had a hell hound names Zetta! I loved the set up for book three in this book and getting to know the dynamics of the underworld! I felt like it gave me a better grasp of the characters and it’s really amazing how I went from hating a character to empathizing with her and liking her and wanting to see her succeed by the end in just one book, a testament to the author!

Tropes:

🐾shadow daddy
🐾animal sidekick
🐾touch her and d**
🐾prophecy
🐾fated mate
🐾politics
🐾underworld
🐾magic systems
🐾trials

I had the opportunity to be an ARC reader for To Dwell In Shadows, and it was such an immersive journey into the Underworld alongside Selene and Sam. This book dives deeper into Sam’s origins, and I really enjoyed exploring the world-building that brought his background to life. The author does a fantastic job of making the Underworld feel both eerie and enchanting.

Some of my favorite parts of the book was the banter between the characters, it added levity in all the right places. The fated mates trope was well-executed, and the playful, sometimes silly moments gave the darker setting a nice balance. I especially appreciated how my feelings for each character shifted over time; the author isn't afraid to push you away from someone only to draw you back in later, which made for an emotionally dynamic read.

I loved meeting all the new characters in this book, but I do wish we’d gotten more personal development for them. There were times I felt we spent a bit too much time on ancient plant lore…while I understand the value in keeping the old-world setting authentic, I found myself wanting to stay more grounded in the emotional and character-driven elements of the Underworld (and less in detailed botany LOL).

That said, I still have so many questions and can't wait to see where the story goes in the third installment. To Dwell In Shadows builds on the strengths of the first book and sets the stage for what's sure to be an exciting continuation.

This. Freaking. Book!!!🥲 I was so on edge listening to this because I just wanted everything to be fine for Sam and Serene. They went through so much in the first book and I have a soft spot for them in my heart 🥹 This was a great continuation of their story, with the same fondness for these two but also delving into their own stories in the Underworld. The world building, the action and the drama made me binge this in one day!! I couldn’t put it down. I’m so excited for where this story is going and that ending was genuinely insane 🥲

First of all, holy cliffhanger! This is the second book in the series and it continues Sam and Selenes journey. Together, as mates, they embark on a journey to Hell. Sam is finally returning home to see his parents for the first time since he was a small child. We're introduced to new and mysterious characters. Some likable and some....not🥴. I was hooked from the beginning and could not put the book down. There were many times while reading this where I found myself giggling, and perhaps kicking my feet. 😆 I CAN'T wait for book three!❤️

Thank you so much to Avalon Griffin and Book Funnel for an advanced reader copy of To Dwell in Shadows! The ebook ARC was exchanged to me for an honest review. I stumbled across the first book on tiktok, and ended up loving it! So, it is safe to say that this was a very anticipated read for me.

I received an ARC for my honest opinion

This is book two of Samael and Selene’s story and let me tell you it was just as amazing as book 1 if not even better than it. The first important thing to say is that I need book 3 and asap, that cliffhanger was… just ugh, I will beg if I have too.

In this book you will go on a journey with Samael and Selene to the underworld, so that Samael and Selene will get the chance to meet his parents, and to spend time getting to know them… But the underworld has something else to offer instead. It might be something that is the best news for the couple, or it might become what drives a wedge between these characters or even something far worse… Oh did you think I would tell you what one it will be, nope instead if you haven’t already read book 1, then this one. You will see and hear about characters from the first book, but you will also meet some new ones, some you will right away hate, others will leave you feeling like hmm... Should I trust this person but remember that it’s the underworld and they rule with politics, scheming and betrayal even when they think that they’re doing the right thing. With Sam, his parents don’t ask him if he would like to rule the kingdom but just assume that he will because duh, he is their son, but Sam wants a life with Selene. Selene is caring, nurturing, has compassion and is understanding. However, don’t let that fool you, she is just as fierce as her mate Sam when it comes to family.

In this book these characters are still dealing with childhood trauma, darkness within, grief, pain and learning to let the things that they cannot control go. With these two I have no fears that they will be able to overcome any and all situations that they might find themselves in but I do have to say that Griffin has me a little bit worried with that cliffhanger if it will be an task that will bring these two even closer or will it throw them out to the wolves. I liked that in this book you really didn’t see the characters together that much but instead you got to understand them each other alone in this world and see/feel all their emotions. I loved the character development in this book and seeing how they handle the obstacles that are thrown in their way but at the same time you watch them still understand and love each other through all of it and you can see the bond that they have. I have to say that I really loved the hellhounds in this book and honestly if I could own one I would lol. “Fear me *evil laugh*”.

I found the pace of the book to have been perfect for a book 2 fast but slow in the right places, but overall, for me fast paced. I adore Griffin's writing style so much, she can make a book that you will just be turning the pages nonstop until you get to the end, and if you’re like me saying nooo… I love that Griffin pays attention to the details from the small to the big ones, and that she has the ability to give you a character that you really just hate and find yourself liking said character and rooting for them. THAT is an amazing author! I can’t wait for the audio of this book to come out and I hope that I am able to review it as well, because I think this book’s audio will knock the socks right off your feet.

I want to thank Griffin for the opportunity to review this book and allow me on her ARC team.

🎧 Audiobook Review — To Dwell in Shadows by Avalon Griffin
Narrated by Aileen Bishop
“I’ve been waiting for my mate for a long time.”

Aileen Bishop has done it again. Her performance of Samael and Selene adds an entirely new dimension to Avalon’s already lush and addictive story. The way she brings these characters to life is captivating and immersive—I devoured this audiobook in just two days. Bishop’s narration breathes emotion into every line, perfectly matching the depth, sensuality, and tension Avalon builds. She’s an incredible talent, and her voice feels tailor-made for this series.

Just like the first book, I read it first and then listened—and it’s a process I plan to continue.
We return to Aurelia with Selene and Samael—characters I’ve grown to absolutely adore. After confronting their past traumas and their magnetic pull in Unbound by Shadows, this sequel shifts the spotlight to Sam and his long-awaited return to his family in the Underworld. The multi-layered detail is fantastic—plot, emotional depth, atmosphere. Griffin paints a gorgeously dark and addictive world for Sam and Selene.

If, for some unfathomable reason, you haven’t read or listened to this series, here’s your nudge: Selene is a human who stumbles into a vivid, dangerous new realm, and Samael is a 6’6” broody Vengeance Demon (🫠) who would burn kingdoms for her. It’s dark, steamy, and I loved every second of it.

Faced with the brutal lifestyle of the Underworld, Selene stays true to herself—nurturing, fierce, and compassionate. Sam is learning what it means to be the demon he was born to be, struggling to reconcile who he wants to be with who he’s expected to be as Prince of the Underworld.
The story is primarily plot- and character-driven, but when the spice hits, it hits. Think wobbly knees and full-body blushing. I never thought I’d have a thing for a horned demon… but here we are 😆.

Avalon Griffin’s dedication shines through her writing, and Aileen Bishop’s performance rounds out one of my very top romantasy reads. Both women are incredibly talented storytellers, and I’m honored to have had the opportunity to experience this ALC. I’m so excited for this series to continue.

To Dwell In Shadows follows Sam and Selene to the Underworld.

Mostly to meet the parents, but you can't visit a kingdom and expect everything to go smoothly.
From Sam's position, to Selene's species, and from Vanthee's advances to Mammon's plan.

I love Avalon's writing and her characters!
In this book, we meet new characters, like the king and queen of the Underworld, Vanthee, and of course, Zetta, the bestsest character!

There's action, there's politics, there's family drama, and of course, some spice!
The characters are well written. The new ones make an impression on you, good and bad.
I enjoyed the development of the couple, both as a couple and as individual characters.
And the description of the Underworld? Great! The new places, the rooms, the library, even the smallest of creatures, they meet.

"If she couldn't escape the mysteries of the Underworld, at least she could escape in a pile of books". This spoke to my soul!

The cliffhanger?!?
I read the preview for the next book. I said it before, I'll say it again! I need Hal's story!!

A big thank you to Avalon Griffin and Book Funnel for an advanced reader e-copy of the book!

A big thank you to Avalon Griffin and Book Funnel for inviting me to read the ARC of this book.
I was excited to continue Selene and Sam’s adventures in this book as they travel to the underworld. I enjoyed learning more about this world and its characters. The strongest parts of the book for me were the continued development of Selene and Sam’s relationship, Selene’s growth as a character as she learns to move past her people pleasing and assert herself, and the spice which was definitely spicing—taking it up a few notches from book one. The world building and mysteries surrounding the dead/spirits also made my little fantasy geek girl heart happy and is something I’m really hoping gets fleshed out more in the third installment. The weakest parts of the book for me were the trials and some of the character’s development and choices (really trying to avoid spoilers here) but perhaps these elements will be resolved in book three as this book very much ends in a cliff hanger. You have been warned! I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next!

I stumbled across the first book in this series by chance and boy am I glad I did. I've been looking forward to this one as soon as it was announced and I pre-ordered it the first day it showed up. I'm happy to report it did not disappoint! Selene and Sam are great together. The hellhounds were my favorite, though, cause doggies. It was a really quick read and I will definitely re-read. Multiple times. Oh! They are not messing around when they say it ends on a cliffhanger! I don't know how I'm going to wait for the next one. Anyone know how to make friends with an author so I can get my hands on it sooner? I kid, I kid. But I am desperate to read the next one. The wait is going to kill me.
This was my 100th book for the year, though, so that's cool.

If this book were a beverage, it would be a dark chocolate hot cocoa with a little cayenne on top. And it would be served in a bigggggg bathtub (ahem, chapter 41). I was SO thrilled to receive an ARC for book two as I absolutely devoured Unbound By Shadows (book one) last year. In To Dwell in Shadows, we follow Sam and Selene as they navigate the Underworld and all of the family & political drama that comes with it. Expect a (hopefully future) MIL you love to hate, cute AF hellhounds that shoot blue fire, and a sexy demoness who is unafraid to shoot her shot! This book ends on a cliffhanger that will have you begging for book 3.

Thank you to Avalon Griffin for the ARC!

THIS SERIES!! I love Avalon’s world building and her unique take on romantasy characters. Both FMC and MMC read like real people with real relationships, insecurities, and conflicts. If you are a romantasy lover who craves a twist on the typical FMC/MMC, definitely pick up this series.

This sequel was exactly what I wanted - political intrigue, family drama, conflict, betrayal, magic, powerful women, and a DOG. 😍 It leaves us on the biggest cliffhanger to ever cliffhanger and I am on the edge of my seat for the next installment.

Thank you to Avalon for the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Despite how book 1 ended with Selene in the possession of the Travellers Stone, a year has passed by. Selene has finally mastered quick travel and is ready to visit the Underworld with Samael and the Queen for a much needed visit. However, things do not go their way as Samael's parents plan to keep him in the Underworld forever.

Overall a decent story, but I thought the spice could have been spicier, the mean characters should have been meaner (they are demons after all) and I am not a fan of cliff-hanger endings.

I really loved this book. From the start, the storyline was interesting and kept me pulled in the whole way through. The world feels rich, the characters are easy to connect with, and the writing just flows.

I don’t want to give anything away, but the trials were such a fun part of the book—they added great tension and made the story even more engaging.

While I hear romance books aren’t supposed to end on a cliffhanger, this one is so good! It hit at exactly the right moment and left me genuinely wanting more. I’m already counting down until the next book comes out.

I really enjoyed this book by Avalon Griffin. Her story and character development are amazing.

Avalon's introduction to the Underworld with Sam & Selena visit to meet Sam's parents has a great setup. We learn some interesting facts of demons and Avalon has taken her research and created complete personalities of the various individuals in this book.

I personally can't wait for the release of Avalon Griffin's next book for this series. She makes a world of would love to visit.

I found the story in this book to be Much more compelling. Learning more about the history and how the paths were meant to be forged. I do hate the fact that ended on a cliffhanger, I won’t lie, now I have to wait for the next one because I really wanna know what happens. Also definitely need a pet Hellhound.

This was an enjoyable continuation in the story. It felt a little distant, especially in the beginning. It definitely gained better momentum as it went on. I was not prepared for that cliffhanger but I’m intrigued to see how this new couple gets to thrown into the mix.

I had the absolute pleasure of proofreading this story, and let me tell you—Avalon is a delight to work with.

Now let me ask you:

😈 Do you love a heroine with quiet strength and an unshakable belief in the good in others?

😈 Does quirky, cackle-worthy humor speak to your soul?

😈 Are you intrigued by the idea of a smut-reading demon (yes, really)?

Then To Dwell in Shadows is calling your name. Add it to your TBR—you won’t regret it! 🥀🔥

When I found out that Unbound by Shadows was getting a second book and I was able to read the Arc was absolutely amazing. The introduction of new characters and the world building of the Underworld was very immersive for me. I am always down for trials in the books that I read and while they came across as short trials they did leave me guessing the outcomes. There is mystery and while some questions from the first book were answered it is always fun to find yourself getting even more questions that need answering for the next book.

5⭐3🌶️

Having had the incredibly exciting opportunity to ALC Unbound by Shadows last month, I was beyond thrilled to dive into the ARC of book two, To Dwell in Shadows. This series has quickly climbed to the top of my romantasy and fantasy favorites.

We return to the story with Selene and Samael — characters I’ve grown to absolutely adore. After confronting their past traumas and the undeniable, magnetic pull between them in book one, this sequel shifts the spotlight onto Sam and his return to the Underworld. The level of detail is remarkable — not just in plot, but in emotional depth and scene-setting. Griffin paints a gorgeously dark, brooding world that’s as rich in feeling as it is in atmosphere.

If for some ridiculous reason you haven’t read (or listened to) Unbound by Shadows, here’s your nudge: Selene is a human who stumbles into a vivid new realm, and Samael is a 6’6” broody Vengeance Demon who would burn kingdoms for her. Both carry heavy childhood trauma, but fate—and each other—help them begin to heal.

To Dwell in Shadows is a stunning continuation of their story. We’re introduced to new characters that range from “absolute favorite” to “complete and total a**hat.” There’s plenty of darkness, grief, and pain, but Avalon sprinkles in just enough warmth and hope to keep your heart beating.
Selene stays true to herself—nurturing, fierce, and full of compassion. She might not want kids, but I have zero doubt she’d be an amazing mother (and Sam as a dad? Be still my heart 🥹). Sam continues to be the best kind of demon outside the bedroom, but inside is a different story 😜.

If you haven’t read book one yet, go do it now. This series delivers far more than just spice—but when the spice hits…it hits.

There’s a lot to unpack in the books to come, and I’m beyond excited for the ride.

Avalon is a deeply involved, responsive, and wildly talented storyteller and I’m honored to have had the opportunity to read this ARC.

Every thought and opinion expressed is my own.

"Too much unseemly behavior ignites my demonic instincts."

Selene & Sam. This is the second in the Shadows of Aurelia series and it did not disappoint! Another cliffhanger and I'm not even mad about it. I can't wait to read the next in the series. Pacing continues to be quick and kept my attention all the way through. Selene & Sam are a dream couple, thoughtful towards each other, attentive, and supportive. Their conflict comes from outside and their adventures with Sam's family kept me on the edge of my seat. The characters introduced in this book were amazing. I love Vanthee! I hope we see more of her in the next books. I'm also obsessed with the hellhounds, sweet Zetta(!) and am so excited to see where Selene's relationship with them goes. The world building in this book continues to be detailed, easy to read, and fast paced. This ends with a cliffhanger.

I received this eARC for free and my review is voluntary. Thank you to the author for allowing me to be an arc reader!

Update: I received the ALC (audiobook) for To Dwell in Shadows and it did not disappoint. The narrator is so good - just as in the first book. Pacing is great, it’s so good to hear Sam and Selene again. Vanthee’s voice is great and she does the creature characters so well! 5 stars for the book and for the audiobook!

I am so thankful that I was able to reach out to Avalon Griffin and receive and e-ARC of the second book. You all know I loved Unbound by Shadows and I actually had no idea there was even going to be a second book but was thrilled that there was! The second book continues to follow Selene and Sam’s adventures as they travel to the underworld. I love that we get to see previous characters come back into play but also that we get more chartacter development. Zeta is my new favorite pet in a book. I felt so many emotions reading this as well. Avalon truly captures everything someone way feel in the underworld as a human! I found myself in a love/hate relationship with one of the other female characters (if you know you know) but ending up loving her and rooting for her. The raw emotions that Sam and Selene experience are crazy and at times heartbreaking. The audio book is just fabulous! I cannot recommend these books enough as they are so good and truly unexpected. However, be prepared for the cliffhanger that she leaves you one!!!! I was not prepared for that one! I now NEED the third book!

Wow! I wasn’t sure how Avalon was going to expand on Selene and Sam’s story but what a wild ride it was! I loved seeing more of the Underworld while Sam and Selene expanded their relationship from the previous book. At first I wanted to punch Vanthee but she totally grew on me - the mark of great writing for sure! The story has action, some spice, and continued world building that will have you on the edge of your seat! I cannot wait for the next book, especially after that ending! Overall I give this 4.5 stars. There was a bit more filler than the last book but it was nice to see more of Sam and Selene’s budding relationship encountering the relatable pitfalls of family pressures and everyday life getting in the way.

Another exciting adventure with Samael & Selene only this time in the Underworld. I enjoyed the new characters introduced and the world building. Sam was eager to go back to visit the Underworld of his youth, since Selene now is the owner of the traveler's stone, but everything does not go as expected. I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next.
