Atlas Skye is the renowned prince of pleasure with the magical ability to elicit desire. Repulsed by his son’s shameless reputation and blemished character, the kralv issues Atlas an ultimatum. Find a wife or be shipped to a remote camp in the mountains to mine for fire rubies. Unfortunately for Atlas, there’s only one female he wants, and she hates him.

Everinne Auvyre is touched by death. She thrives on careless decisions to avoid her volatile magic and the nightmares haunting her. When her brother refuses to aid her destructive habits, she finds employment at the Mystic Obscura, an exclusive parlor full of provocative entertainment, where the price to enter is a single drop of blood.

Yet the gilded streets of Prava are no longer safe. Immortals are being hunted and the wicked wood is awakening. When Everinne’s magic is discovered by the kralv, she’s forced into an unjust bargain—become his puppet and marry Atlas, or surrender to her greatest fears. With Everinne entrenched in the clutches of the Mystic Obscura, Atlas struggles to find a way to free her from its grip and uncover the missing immortals. But when Everinne’s only friend vanishes, the two must navigate the city’s sinister underbelly, before they lose their kingdom, and each other, forever.

lore of the wicked wood is one of those stories that sounds enticing when you read the blurb, but once you start reading the sentences and turning those pages, you soon realise the actual content is lacking in likeable characters, engaging scenes or dialogue and at the minimum half decent world-building. i don’t believe this author is bad at writing, but it’s not for me in this case. the writing has evident overuse of the same or similar descriptors for scenes and characters, making the writing feel flat and uninspiring, and the overall pacing was jarring and inconsistent.

in lore of the wicked wood, hillary raymer introduces us to the magnificent, gilded walls of prava, a city built where fae, mortals, witches and vampires co-exist. there’s a decent amount of different conflicts to follow, including the sudden disappearance of immortals, which forms the long-plot of this series; the forced marriage between atlas and everinne, lest atlas wants to be sent to the mines as punishment; everinne stuck between a blood-bound oath to the mystic obscura and atlas’ father using her for her abilities; and everinne’s death-made magic that controls much of her life. i feel that this author was far too ambitious inundating this book with too many ideas and tropes, creating an overwhelmingly disjointed story containing more than enough mini plot-lines.

♡ atlas skye + everinne auvyre
everinne is one of the most unlikeable characters i’ve encountered in some time. for someone of mature age, she’s the opposite—she’s immature and inconsiderate of others, caring little for her brother’s feelings; is selfish and reckless, an absolute liability, with little regard for her own safety and the safety of others. at one point, it’s insinuated everinne has been alive for sometime, but her decisions and follow through indicate otherwise. she’s a surface-level character with little to no substance and non-existent character growth. atlas’ characterisation doesn’t fair better, lacking interesting qualities and genuine likability. i somewhat anticipated atlas being a jaded, bitter and potentially twisted character who used his sexual powers to coerce or manipulate others around him, but his ability became almost a laughable gimmick to make him more appealing, i’m assuming.

i will maybe give this author another attempt in the future, but for now, i know i won’t be continuing with reading this series. between the detestable characters and the lacking world-building, it would be really difficult even powering through the remainder of the atlas and everinne’s journey to eternal happiness. such a shame; the cover is really pretty.

Ok I was surprised by how good this turned out to be ! At first I took time to be immersed completely as I’m in the worst reading slump . Anyway let me say that The ending OMG I was shocked ok I knew who was the villain from the beginning but for it to end like this !! Absolutely didn’t see it .Also I thought this was a stand alone but I guess with how it ended it is not? Anyway the main characters were so sweet I wanted to give both of them a hug . Their pain was kinda different yet the same.
The FMC “everrina “ was sassy and self destructive. She would endanger herself again and again because she was so hurt and didn’t know how to handle her power . I loved how her fear of herself and her power was shown .
The MMC “ atlas “ I loved his name btw . He was sooo cute and sweet . Something about me is that no matter what I would adore a yearning man . And this man has yearned for over half a century!!! His love for her and how he would do and give her anything and everything. Also how he’s also struggled with his power because of how people viewed him and degraded him for what it is.

Overall I enjoyed and I’d recommend also I want the next book right this moment!!

If you enjoy dark fantasy romance with tropes like brother’s best friend, forced proximity, hate-to-love, forced marriage, slow burn, and so much more, this book is definitely for you!

My favorite read this year! I devoured Lore of the Wicked Wood —it’s that good. From the first page, Lore of the Wicked Wood pulls you into a world of magic, danger, and irresistible tension. It is one of those books that keeps your mind tangled up with wondering what is next..

I cannot thank you enough Hillary Raymer and BookFunnel, for my early copy to review the novel before it’s published.

I made it 120 pages in and this just seems so slow! I love a good slow burn romantasy but not a turtle 🐢 slow plot line. The writing however was super easy to read so I was trying to push through but just couldn’t not stay interested. Gonna have to Soft DNF this for now. 😔

Firstly I read this as my third ARC ever and it was so good! I signed up for it on a whim having never read a book by Hillary before and it exceeded my expectations.

I usually forget I sign up for arcs or never think I could get them and I’m always blown away by them.
The world that was build was so refreshing to someone who reads fantasy pretty heavily. This MMC is definitely one to remember in my opinion!

If you’re looking for a great read and maybe need a refresh on fantasies this is it! Definitely worth the read!

I am quite honestly speechless with how I am supposed to review this because it is hands down one of my favorite reads of the year and Hillary how dare you?! 😂 Lore of the Wicked Wood is Book 1 in the Whispers of the Wicked duology.

If you are a fan of Dark Fantasy Romance with Brother’s Best Friend, Forced Proximity, Hate to Love, Forced Marriage, Slow Burn and so much more this one is for you!

In this story we meet Everinne who is on a bit of a destructive path trying to drown out her past haunting her and quiet her death magic. Then there is Atlas, the thorn in her side playboy prince of pleasure, who is always tattling on her to her brother Veros.

When Veros finally says enough is enough Everinne ends up working at Mystic Obscura but there is more to the club then meets the eye and Atlas is always keeping an eye on her.

When Atlas’s father gives him an ultimatum to find a bride or work the mines, it is the last thing on his mind while there are beings that are going missing and when Everinne is forced into a bargain with Atlas’s father to use her magic for his gain and to marry Atlas she is stuck between a rock and a hard place. But she does what she must to save those she loves and when her best friend disappears Atlas and Everinne are forced to work together to figure out what is going on.

There is so much I do not want to spoil because you just have to read this tale that Hillary has woven. I loved getting to see some familiar faces from Hillary’s other series. You feel for Everinne as she struggles and wants to protect everyone and you will just swoon with Atlas and his possessiveness. Their banter is fantastic and though it is a slow slow burn their intimacy is something else. You will be left screaming how dare you and begging for book 2 and I can’t wait to see how their story ends.

I had the honor of ARC reading Lore of the Wicked Wood, and I am OBSESSED. It’s a fantasy romance with dark carnival vibes, lush world building, delicious slow burn romance, and a hint of mystery. Oh and the FMC controls pain and the MMC controls pleasure 😉

The brother’s best friend trope in a romantasy is exactly what I didn’t know I needed. The tension and back and forth between Ever and Atlas is ✨chefs kiss ✨ The tension and chemistry is off the charts holy shit. I also love the way the arranged marriage trope was written into the story. This is one of my FAV tropes and it was so well done!

Hillary writes such a dimensional character that when she hurts, it makes you hurt too. Everinne’s situation literally made my heart ache for her. She masquerades as a party princess, but underneath, the reader can see how much pain she’s in and how she’s hiding from her magic.

The mystery element of people going missing is so perfectly woven into the plot. The little pieces start coming together and the character start to realize how deep this goes.

The dark carnival vibes were immaculate and I ate this book up. The world building is so lush! I loved the detailed description of the club, I could so easily visualize it in my head and it sounds so magical.

It was so fun to see the cross over between Hillary’s other series and the appearance of familiar characters.

THE ENDING WTF my heart is broken 😭 I’m so terrified for them and am eagerly awaiting the next book omfg.

10/10 recommend, absolutely no notes. I’m OBSESSED. I’d give this 6 stars if I could. Please read this I am BEGGING you!!

This is a great dark fantasy romance with a reckless touched by death FMC and a prince with the scandalous reputation. It’s a true hate to love romance. The world is rich, dangerous and sensual and I found it very enjoyable.

When the author started peeling back the layers of Everinne’s character of why she is self destructive, the plot really starts to thicken as she finds herself in peril as the wicked woods awakens. The beginning starts off fun and feisty and by the end it’s so high stakes I was on the edge of my seat! I really liked that Everinne’s brother was the voice of reason to both her and Atlas. With both MCs being very intense having him to balance them was perfect. I am very much looking forward to book 2 after that ending!

This is a dark fantasy romance with fae, witches, shifters and a slow burn romance with tons of yearning 👀 the stunning cover alone had me picking up this book! Put that together with banter filled dialogues, fae royalty and a lush worldbuilding I was HOOKED!

We’re in Aedran, a world where humans, vampires, witches, shifters, and fae all live side by side. Everinne is this chaotic fae who literally swings from chandeliers and dances like a Cirque du Soleil performer, hypnotizing everyone around her, while driving her brother Veros and his best friend, Prince Atlas, absolutely crazy.

Atlas is the crown prince, with a bad reputation. His father basically gives him an ultimatum: get married or get sent to the mines. Meanwhile, Everinne is dealing with her own mess: she’s got a deadly powerful magic she can’t control, her brother cuts her off financially, and she ends up finding work at the Mystic Obscura. Think night circus vibes, lights, costumes, performers, it was such a magical setting, I loved every description.

The chemistry between Atlas and Everinne? So good. I was fully invested in the “troubled wild fae girl + playboy prince” dynamic. Then Everinne is attacked, and to save her life, she has to make a dangerous deal with Kralv, which drags her into a forced marriage situation 👀❤️‍🔥

Hillary Raymer's books are just so easy to read and this one is no exception! It grabbed me instantly and I had to just binge it all in one go! There are some fantastic cameos from characters from the author's other series (particularly two of the Starstorm brothers, as it reminded me how much I'm looking forward to their books!), but ultimately the main characters had my full attention. Everinne and Atlas were amazing characters - a perfect complement to each other as the prince of pleasure and the future princess of pain. They've been through so much already and it's only book one!

I definitely recommend this one, and if you're new to the author's books, you could totally start with Lore of the Wicked Wood. The cameos from the other series are in one bit of the book, but you wouldn't be confused at all coming into this one without reading any of the other books. If you do start here, you won't be disappointed - this book has yearning, action and Fae with amazing powers, but be prepared for that unpredictable, massive cliffhanger that leaves you craving the next book already!

Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy from the author but this is my voluntary and honest review.

“Mind yourself, Wildheart,” he murmured softly. “You might be my best friend’s sister, but I’m still your prince.”

A sex-fae and a death-fae come together in a second-chance-esque romance with scheming, twists, the circus (or a variation of circus), magic, vampire, spice, motorcycles (and motorcycle spice), invisible hands (yes, that also falls under spice but invisible hands require their own category), and mysterious intrigue. They were also not 20-year-olds, so that was refreshing.

But suspended from the ceiling like that, she looked like she was dancing among the stars. Like she was forged from dreams and nightmares. A fantasy in the making.

3.25 stars

“Showing off your wingspan a little early tonight, aren’t you, Your Radiance?” She smiled then, but it was poisonous. He wanted to wipe that stupid grin off her pretty little face.

I wanted to like this one but I fear it missed the mark. I was pretty bored for most of it and started skimming just to finish. I think I’m in the minority of opinions; everyone else seemed to love it, and I do like Hillary’s books normally, so I’m sad about this one since it sounded super great. But also, everyone was super stupid??

Too bad something so beautiful could be so dangerous.

Thank you to Hillary for this ARC!

✨ARC Review✨
In all honesty, I don’t know if I can forgive the author for the ending of this book. I’ve dealt with some cliffhangers, but this one was brutal! Was it worth it? Absolutely. Everinne is spiraling emotionally because of the damage her magic can cause. She has the ability to inflict pain until it kills and she is now at a point where she is trying to drown out bad memories with bad decisions. Atlas, the prince, is her brother’s best friend whose magic is control over pleasure. They continuously clash regardless of the underlying attraction.

Once Everinne’s brother cuts her off due to her self destructive behavior, she unwittingly becomes trapped working at the Mystic Obscura. Immortals are disappearing within the kingdom and Atlas’ father has found out about the power Everinne has tried so hard to hide. Everinne is being pressured from so many angles and the kingdoms is in danger from not only is happening to the immortals, but the wicked wood that is awakening again.

So the questions become: will Atlas and Everinne be able to overcome their differences? Will they be able to discover what’s happening to the immortals? Will Everinne be able to escape the clutches of the Mystic Obscura? Find out by searching the wicked wood! #deathmagic #fae #hatetolove #brothersbestfriend #royalloveinterest #romantasy #forbiddenlove

Thank you to Hillary Raymer for the early copy of this story, this is my honest review.

Lore of the Wicked Wood follows Everlinne and Atlas with very different magical powers. He causes pleasure and she inflicts pain.
Ever has not had an easy life, one thing on top of another has caused her to be a different version of herself than anyone imagined she would ever be. She drinks a lot, parties and brings different males home with her each night trying to forget what has happened to her.
Atlas is the crown prince who no one really knows, even his best friend - Everlinne's brother - doesn't know everything about him.
Ever's brother decided that it was time for Everlinne to stand on her own two feet and support herself which leads to her working at the Mystic Obscura, an exclusive parlour, as a dancer. All it costs to enter Mystic Obscura is a single drop of blood.
But people are dissapearing. People with rare powers - just like Everinne has. When her friend is taken Everinne and Atlas have to work togther to try and find her before it's too late.

I am obsessed with this book. Everinne is written so well! At first glance she seems like a party princess only out for a good time no matter what happens but when you get to know her character you realise that she has so much more going on under the surface than a girl who likes to drink and dance. Her and Atlas together? Perfect. I'm usually not one for a blonde MMC and just imagine him with dark hair in my head but Atlas was spot on! If you'd like an idea of what the author imagines him looking like check out her instagram where there's some character art posted for some of the scenes in the book.
The overarching story of the missing immortals and the looming threat of the creatures in the Wicked Wood sits just right as well. There isn't too much focus on one over the other so the pacing of both plots worked very well I thought but the focus was still on the relationship between Everinne and Atlas which I loved.

One problem I had was the end of the book. No other reason than the fact that that cliffhanger? Has me crying and begging for book 2!

Received this book as an eARC.

Unfortunately, being raised around someone who behaved like the MFC in this book, I have no interest in reading about women like this. I find their behavior immature, especially when there are so many other paths to take than this one. Now, of course, there was a character arc of growth and maturity, but I just don't want to read 60% of a book with a woman like this, it does not interest me. For context before I specifically review the MFC, I was not a fan of Nesta's story from the ACOTAR series or Wren's from Iron and Embers. It even took me a while to like Bryce from CC because of my likes/dislikes in reading. Again, I own that my past impacts my reading preferences, as it does for anybody.

The MFC is traumatized early in life by a few deaths she witnessed and caused, as well as by her magic. Instead of coping even mildly healthily, such as possibly being vulnerable, facing her thoughts and emotions, leaning on the people she loves, or learning to channel her magic, she avoids, parties, is rude, impulsive, unkind, arrogant, and sleeps with strangers all the time to numb her pain. The MFC is incredibly entitled and selfish (literally has never worked a day in a life, and sucks money away from her family's account to buy her alcohol and lavish lifestyle), and everyone else is at fault for her problems. For example, chapter 7 is literally all about the MFC complaining about how she has to get a job and working is for everyone else. The MFC takes advantage of her brother and best friend, is manipulative to get what she wants, and thinks the MMC is the problem when her behavior is. Now, in real life, I know this is how some people cope after trauma, but not the majority. Most trauma survivors I know, including myself, use our traumas to be more emotionally centered, are kind, connect with others, and use our experiences to help people. Of course we have some avoidance or unhealthy coping, but this extent of behavior is not what I enjoy reading. However, I see how this is for other people and why they love this type of storyline!

Lore of the Wicked Wood introduces us to Everinne, a deeply flawed and self-destructive heroine whose past continues to haunt her. Reckless and impulsive, her choices are often questionable, sometimes dangerously so, much to the dismay of her protective brother. But that’s what makes her compelling. I love a flawed protagonist, especially one whose pain and trauma are intricately woven into the narrative. Everinne’s history is brutal, and her mental state reflects that - especially in this world where she is a fae hiding her true nature. One who can manipulate pain and death.

When Everinne finally pushes her brother too far and she's forced to survive on her own. She finds work at the Mystic Obscura, a secretive, high-end parlour that caters to the rich and powerful. At first glance, she seems like your typical party girl; wild, reckless, and out of control. But it quickly becomes clear that there’s far more to her. Beneath the surface, she’s hiding painful secrets, and the more we learn, the more heartbreaking her story becomes.

Enter Atlas - the elusive Crown Prince. On the surface, he’s arrogant, egotistical, and every bit the playboy prince. Oh, and did I mention he has *sex magic*? But like Everinne, Atlas is not who he appears to be. He’s hiding a secret, one that directly ties into Everinne’s past, and as the story unfolds, the layers of his character peel back in the most delicious way.

When people start vanishing and the King turns a blind eye, Atlas takes it upon himself to uncover the truth. Things get personal when Everinne’s best friend, a powerful witch, goes missing. Forced into an uneasy alliance, Everinne and Atlas must work together to unravel the mystery of the kidnappings…and face the destiny that seems to be pulling them together.

Lore of the Wicked Wood is a captivating Adult Romantasy that’s incredibly easy to fall into. The world is dark, lush, and immersive, with characters who feel real - messy, complex, and wonderfully developed. The chemistry between Everinne and Atlas is electric from their very first meeting. Atlas is basically waving a giant green flag for blonde MMCs everywhere, and their slow-burn romance is intense, fiery, and so worth the wait. (Even if the wait feels borderline cruel - Hillary, you did warn us and I still wasn’t prepared!)

That cliffhanger? Absolutely brutal. I need the next book yesterday.

Dark fantasy romance duology
Dual POV, brother's best friend, forbidden romance, slow burn, fated mates, hate to love, mine, touch her and 💀, MMC with a playboy reputation, FMC dealing with trauma by partying, yearning, nicknames, forced marriage, you came/you called, betrayal, tyrant, dangerous woods that cause madness, cliffhanger!
Please do check the content warnings

Everinne is dealing with her past trauma and fear of her magic by being a daredevil party girl and generally making bad choices. Her brother cuts her off financially, telling her he will no longer support her putting herself in so much danger. Looking for work, she ends up at the mysterious Mystic Obscura that is steeped in glamor and danger. Atlas, dubbed the Prince of Pleasure, is looked down on (or harassed) because of his magic, and his father despises him. He is ordered to find a wife and produce heirs and stop worrying about the immortals that keep going missing. Atlas and his best friend, also Ever's brother, work to try to protect Ever from the tyrant ruler and the Mystic Obscura that she is now tied to. Oh, and the said tyrant is also forcing her to marry Atlas or all three of them will be tormented. Can Ever and Atlas get over the things keeping them from being happy together, free Ever, AND also find what is happening to the missing people?

HILLARY!! What are you doing to us?! 🤣 I immediately ran to the discord to yell when I finished this book! Ahhh what a cliffhanger!

We are getting a new story set in the same world as the Starstorm series, but set apart from those books. I've compared Starstorm to Bridgerton with magic and this series is a bit the same, but we get darker. You can also start with this series without reading Starstorm!

Ever and Atlas have a lot they are dealing with and they don't feel worthy, so it was great to see them work through things together and start accepting each other! I also love that both of these characters are so looked down on by other members of society for different reasons that they both wear masks, but for each other they see through them. I devoured this book - it has suspense and heartbreak and heat and tenderness! The end was action packed and I'm still free falling from that cliffhanger! I can't wait for the next book!!

A few hours ago I read the mother dragon of endings. I am in awe and simultaneously shocked. This is one of my favorite feelings after finishing a book in a series.

Lore of the Wicked Wood is a Dark Fantasy Romance and the first book in Whispers of the Wicked duology that completely consumed me. The story follows Atlas and Everinne. He is the prince, and has the ability to elicit desire. His father, the kralv (the ruler), gives him an ultimatum: find a wife, or be shipped to the mountains to mine rubies. Everinne is the sister of Atlas’s best friend, and she possesses deadly magic. To escape her gift and the nightmares that haunt her, she makes careless decisions that lead to her brother cutting her off. So she finds employment in the Mystic Obscura, an exclusive parlor full of provocative entertainment. But danger lurks in the streets of Prava. Immortals are disappearing, the wood is awakening, and when the kralv discovers Everinne’s powers, he forces her to marry Atlas…

This book is fantastic! I loved the urban fantasy setting, the characters and the bonds between them, the banter, and the air of mystery woven into the story and setting itself. I mean, there’s a shady establishment that requires a drop of blood from the clients and performers, a sentient wicked wood that is reawakening, Immortals that are disappearing. These are exactly the sort of things I enjoy reading. I also loved both Atlas and Everinne so much. Choosing which POV I preferred is impossible, and I loved their dynamic. She hates him, he wants her but can’t have her, and there are years of complicated feelings between them. The yearning is top tier! Also, I think I need three business weeks to recover from that ending. Oh my GOODNESS.

Here are some tropes!
💕 Brother’s best friend
❤️‍🔥 hate to love
🔥 slow burn
🧝‍♀️ fae royals
💍 forced marriage

Rating 4.5⭐️

Thank you to the author for giving me the eARC. Opinions are my own.

✨Lore of the Wicked Wood✨

Author: Hillary Raymer
Release: September 23, 2025
Series: Whispers of the Wicked Duet, book 1.

Holy freakin’ shirt balls, Hill. What a RIDE this was! Firstly, I loved how we got cameos from Hillary’s other books and secondly, this vibe was SOMETHING ELSE. Lovely. Dark. Sensual. Angsty. Suspenseful.

In LOTWW, we get a whole new vibe that felt like diving into a labyrinth of bad decisions and even worse options. We get a dual 3rd person POV with our two MCs, Everinne and Atlas. Everinne is living a life of self destruction drowning herself in alcohol, recklessness, and sensuality to hide from her deadly power and the Prince of pleasure. Atlas is our Prince of pleasure, given a reputation from his power that has condemned and written a fate he cannot escape.

In a flurry of rash decisions, Ever gets herself bound to an enigmatic and dangerous underground club, stalked by a demon summoner, and forced into a bargain by the corrupt fae king to marry his son who she hates.

I feel like I could talk about this book all day because there is SO MUCH going on. It was intricate and mysterious and I had such a good time trying to find links between it all. But most of all, the romance between Ever and Atlas is sooooo yummy. It is a slooooow burn but still with spicy teasing scenes and oh my how they tease!! And I have to say that Atlas’ character development was my FAVE.

Tropes you may find in LOTWW are forced marriage, best friend’s sister, fae x witches x vamps, banter, low spice but high steam, fated mates, hate to love, blonde winged mmc, nicknames, he saves her/comfort, mind speak, his magic isn’t affected by hers.

Hill, it is such a joy to arc read for you again. I love everything I read from you and this was SO GOOD. I cannot wait for book two! Thank you!

God, I don’t even know where to begin. From vampires to demons, I was completely entranced. Everlinne, our FMC, carries a dark magic she refuses to use after accidentally killing her boyfriend. She’s reckless, broken, and impossible not to love. Then there’s Atlas—the playboy prince with actual sex magic (yes, you read that right). The tension between them? Pure fire. His obsession, her resistance, their banter—it all builds into a slow burn that absolutely wrecked me.

I feel like I could talk about this book all day because there is just SO MUCH happening. It’s layered, mysterious, and I had the best time trying to piece everything together. But honestly? The romance between Ever and Atlas is what completely stole the show for me. It’s a sloooow burn, but the tension and teasing scenes? Absolute perfection. The way they push and pull, the banter, the chemistry—it had me grinning and kicking my feet. And Atlas… his character growth was hands down my favorite part. Watching the reckless playboy prince turn into someone who would bleed, break, and burn the world for Ever? Obsessed doesn’t even cover it.

And the tropes? Dual POV, brother’s best friend, forbidden romance, slow burn, fated mates, enemies to lovers, “mine,” and the perfect dose of touch her and 💀 energy.

This story is addictive. Dangerous bargains, brutal ultimatums, and a romance that cuts so deep you’ll feel it long after. Hillary weaves a tale that’s dark, magical, and impossible to put down. By the end, you’ll be screaming, begging for book two.

And this quote? Straight to my soul:
“He’d already decided right then he would never deny her, he would give until his heart gave out, bleed for her until all that remained of him was bones and ash. No matter what she asked of him, he would oblige, and she would always know she could depend on him.”

📖: Lore of the Wicked Wood (Whispers of the Wicked Book 1)
🪾: September 23, 2025!

“𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘣𝘳𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨. 𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵. 𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘭. 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴. 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘱𝘢𝘪𝘯. 𝘠𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘯𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮𝘴. 𝘑𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘴 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘴 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘦𝘴. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘭𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘳. 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘱𝘪𝘦𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶, 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳. 𝘈𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴.”

I don’t even know where to begin! This story consumed me— mind, heart, and soul.

Everinne grapples to control her dangerous magic and Atlas lives in the shadow of his lascivious reputation. When their fates entwine, both must navigate their warring emotions and the sinister forces that threaten the kingdom.

Tropes:
👀Dual POV
❤️‍🩹She controls pain
💓He controls pleasure
💍Forced marriage
💔Hate to love
🙋🏼He’s her brother’s best friend
🌶️: open door

These characters feel deeply yet express themselves so differently. Atlas shoulders the responsibility of being the crown prince and his oppressive father. Everinne behaves recklessly to avoid coping with her grief and regret. She is haunted by her past mistakes and he is riddled with fear of failure and most of all, losing Everinne. Their love/hate chemistry was electrifying and their mutual secret pining had me ready to burst!

The unique magic system was so much fun to explore and the tie-ins from the Faeven Saga and Starstorm series added additional layers further expanding this world.

In Lore of the Wicked Wood, the author crafts a dark fantasy romance that’s gritty, lush, and sensual in equal measure. Everinne and Atlas’ story and the vibes of this book are my newest obsession. The ending had me screaming and I am feral for the next book!

Thank you Hillary for the ARC opportunity. This is my honest and voluntary review.

I received an ARC for Lore of the Wicked Wood from Hillary Raymer in return for an honest review.

Summary:
The first book in the The Whispers of the Wicked series, Lore of the Wicked Wood introduces us to a magical world where fae, vampires, witches, and mortals coexist together. Everinne, a wild fae with the power of death, is forced to use her powers for the King in order to save those she loves. With inhabitants of the realm disappearing Everinne joins forces with her fiance, Atlas, and her brother to find those missing while gaining control over the use of her powers.

My thoughts:
The world building and magic building just weren't substantial enough for me. I would have loved to understand the powers of the fae more. How they are inherited and how they control them would be helpful to build the story. I also couldn't get a feel for the world - I couldn't picture it. I didn't have a clear understanding of the different realms, just that there were others. The world was depicted as quite diverse in supernatural beings - but I don't know the extent or why they do not mingle much. The book just felt like I was missing a prequel - too much was unclear for me to truly enjoy it. On top of all of these gaps - the primary characters were simply not likeable or relatable.

DNF @ ~80%

I believe the cause of my DNF was a mix between me being in a slight slump and frustration with the author's over-repetitive descriptions and complete lack of trimming to the story. I have loved several of Hillary Raymer's books, but Lore of the Wicked Wood was a big miss for me. For a book that's over 500 pages long, I shouldn't only enjoy maybe 100 of them. The physical descriptors of Atlas and Everinne being every other sentence made me want to pull my hair out. I think indie authors overall struggle with finding ways to be descriptive without it being overkill and properly cutting down on portions of their story that aren't totally relevant to the plot or character development. I can usually force myself to finish a book I'm not totally enjoying, especially if I've made it as far as I did here, but I couldn't do it this time.

I will give the author credit where it's due though, she does a great job capturing yearning and romance between love interests, there just wasn't enough of it here. The only part of Lore of the Wicked Wood where I found myself genuinely liking it was when the interactions and relationship between Everinne and Atlas started to move towards romantic after the forced marriage component. I'm totally bummed this didn't hit for me and I think a good bit of editing and deleting is necessary for Lore of the Wicked Wood to become something I'd love. Even though I didn't like this one, I will still continue to read works from this author, as I have thoroughly enjoyed some of her previous works, I just won't be continuing this series.

Thank you to the author for sending me an early copy.

honestly i’m kind of speechless because this book was so. damn. good. ever is an incredible fmc and all i want to do is wrap her up, yell at her, and tell her how amazing she is. i felt my heart ache with her, feeling everything she felt. she was devastatingly perfect to read about. and atlas? i’ve said it once and i’ll say it again: a man who YEARNS is a man who EARNS. the romance between them, the way all of their emotions erupt and wrap around each other, was so so intensely beautiful. i loved them both dearly.

romance aside, the world building and the plot of this book are to die for. a dark forest, a mysterious club, a cruel tyrant. seriously, all of the must haves of a fantasy read. i could not stop reading or put this down until i finished.

and that ENDING? dear god i actually went “no you’re lying this can’t be the end.”

i could not recommend this more to people interested in a dark fantasy with compelling characters, a rich magical world, and a fiery romance that will leave you aching.

me: i’m kinda speechless.

ARC Review: Lore of the Wicked Wood by Hillary Raymer

4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is the first book in the new Whispers of the Wicked Duology! Such a thrilling dark fantasy romance! The banter and tension between Atlas and Everinne was addicting! You think they hate each other, but deep down they don’t realize they’re it for each other. Loved the dual POV! You get so many great tropes such as fated mates, soft only for her, it’s always been you, touch her/him and die, possessive and jealous MMC, arranged marriage, and he’d burn the world for her.
.
Loved the mystery and spooky aspects of this! I geeked out at the cameos from characters from one of Hillary’s other book series! I seriously love Atlas and Ever’s relationship! He didn’t care that she was broken and was always there for her and she saw him for his true self and behind his mask of the Prince of Pleasure. Ever was even protecting him early on! The yearning and longing from both of them was everything!
.
I despise the Krav and Jarek, but they’re good villains! Their characters really make you hate them. I love the comraderie and brotherhood between Caiden, Veros and Atlas. I was stressed reading all the hunting and fighting scenes and especially the ending chapters! That cliffhanger and the last line!! I need Atlas and Ever to be okay! 😭 Anxiously waiting for the next book! Thank you so much Hillary for the ARC!

WHAT THE FORK HILLARY!!!! That cliffhanger at the end left me like 🤯. I knew it wasn’t gonna end wrapped up nicely with a bow since it is a duology but I did not expect any of that. The world building is fantastical and I LOVE that we have cameos from some of the Starstorm brothers and a missing princess 😱. This book is so different from the Faeven Saga and Starstorm series as it is darker, more sensual, and full of tension.

Our MCs in this book are both suffering and hiding their pain in different ways. Everinne (Ever) is reckless and self-destructive due to fear of herself and being death touched. She has never learned to harness her power and instead attempts to stay devoid of emotions by partying and drinking away her feelings. Atlas gave up years ago on having a reputation other than what his power provides and plays into the “Prince of Pleasure” name instead. Years ago he vowed to protect her from everyone, including himself.

I am desperate to know where this goes next and how our two MCs survive their current predicament. I want to see karma get revenge on the evil Kralv and demon summoner Jarek.

Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶️🌶️

Tropes:
Brother’s Best Friend
Forbidden Romance
Forced Proximity
Hate to Love
Royal MMC with Wings
Chaotic broken FMC
Fated Mates
Forced Marriage
Slow Burn

Thank you Hillary Raymer for my early copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This was one of those books that came to me at the perfect time and I easily devoured it in just a few sittings. I loved this book and these characters so damn much. Hands down, my favorite Hillary book yet!

Everinne is fiesty yet flawed, but hey, aren’t we all?! Not only does Ever struggle with the grief and trauma of her past, but also her erratic magic and her growing feelings for the one man she vowed to never fall for. Forced to find employment for the first time in her life, she starts working at the mysterious Mystic Obscura, much to Atlas’s dismay!

And Atlas, what else can I say about him other than I love him, and he is perfect just the way he is. He, too, is struggling with how he is perceived and is at the mercy of the whims of his cruel father, who forces him to settle down, marry, and produce a suitable heir with a more acceptable form of magic. As if being the prince of pleasure is a bad thing?!

The chemisty between these two is electrifying and simply sizzles off the page. Between heated looks, banter for days, and the best slow burn tension, I simply dare you not to fall for these two! Who knew a lollipop could lead to such pleasure?!

I loved the magic system, found family elements, and the cameos from both the Faeven and Starstorm series. Add in some deviant villains, a sentient wicked woods, and a rude AF ending and I am dying for book 2. Will they be able to conquer both time and fate, or will it be their ultimate demise? I cannot wait to find out!

The build up was perfection, the spice was spicy ugh I couldnt get enough. In Hillary's ending acknowledgement she states lol she knows this wasn't what you were expecting ending wise and if that's not the truth Im all here for the upcoming book(s).

Somewhere in between 2.5 - 3 stars.

I was initially pretty into the storyline but once I was around 60% done with the book, I felt like I lost interest entirely and this fell flat for me. Some of the internal dialogue and even between the main characters felt cringe at times. I didn't really love any of the characters. It was a pretty mid read and I didn't end up liking it as much as when I first started it.
