Captivating History of Haiti paints a surprisingly interesting read of a country with a slave background that became an independent country that promised so much hope but delivered fear, superstition, cruelty and despotic rule. Now known for its "voodoo" influenced gang violence this story has no happy ending but a list of lessons for those who place hope in a democratic future in a country that has a history of conflict, corruption and violence.
At times the language can be a bit clunky, but the contents provide a fascinating story.
Well worth considering.

Although there was no new research, this book was very interesting. I was fascinated by the chapter about the Haitian Revolution and how the people overcame the odds. I’d recommend this as an introductory book rather than one for those already familiar with the history of Haiti.

I went into this book looking for an introduction to Haiti's history, which I think it delivered. The whole book is based on 5 sources, while Captivating History's History of the Dominican Republic lists 71 sources.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I found it to be an interesting read full of strife and struggle with Haiti still facing an uncertain future.

I really liked learning about the history of Haiti, a topic I've found discussed very little in history class. Haiti's tribulations come from a time when no one wanted to see a Black county - let alone a person - succeed when White Imperialism dominated the world. And this continues to this day. Without this book, I wouldn't have know the atrocities committed by countries like the United States to keep control of Haiti, pushing the island nation into the poor conditions it has today.
