Edgy and a bit cringe worthy, since I generally, *GASP!*, dislike politics. Still, even with all my personality quirks, I enjoyed this one a lot.

Q:
Every family had their traditions. (c)
Q:
Asher withdrew a roll of duct tape from his bag. Henry made a slight choking sound, which I translated to mean, Dear God, who gave Asher that duct tape and what is he planning on doing with it? …
“Mr. Rhodes, while I’m sure you do a passable Houdini impression, I would prefer you not duct-tape your hands together during class.” (c)
Q:
He was grooming me as his heir, attempting to mold me in his own image. If I gave an inch, he’d take a mile, and I had no desire to be either molded or groomed. …
Power. Politics. Game theory. This was what passed for casual conversation in this house. (c)
Q:
“You’ll have checkmate in three moves.”
... “Will I?” ...
“Luckily for me … I’ll have checkmate in two.” (c)
Q:
Shockingly, I made it through my Monday classes without developing the slightest inclination to sign up for the debate team. (c)
Q:
“So when one of the seniors on the lacrosse team was hazing the freshmen and you surreptitiously recorded said hazing and uploaded it as an attachment to his college applications, that was . . . what, exactly?” (c)
Q:
Hardwicke wasn’t a normal school. Most days, it didn’t even pretend to be. (c)
Q:
“I’ve never really excelled at doing what I’m supposed to,” I said.

“Like talking to a wall,” he muttered. (c)
Q:
“It’s really sweet … in a completely inadvisable kind of way.” (с)
Q:
John Thomas leaned into my personal space. I helped him out of it. Forcibly. (c)
Q:
“Remind me again,” I said. “Is it performance art or organized protest that’s against the Hardwicke code of conduct?” (c)
Q:
“Is that a threat?”
“That’s a statement of probability,” (c)
Q:
“What kind of event?”
“The kind at which your attendance was imperiously demanded.” (c)
Q:
The air was cold in DC in November, but I had Montana in my blood.
The chill didn’t bother me any more than the insults of boys like John Thomas Wilcox. (c)
Q:
From the expression on his face, he half expected Ivy to bite his head off for even asking. (c)

If it came down to the rest of the world or you, I would pick you every single time. (c)

“You do stoic well,” (c)
Q:
“We’ve established that you’re not okay and that I’m not okay. Would it be weird to suggest we could be not-okay while baking cookies?” (c)
Q:
These were the dates that lived forever in people’s memories—bright and detailed, forever memorialized with a kind of visceral horror. I couldn’t remember 9/11, let alone the Challenger or the day Kennedy was shot. (c)
Q:
Let’s talk about . . .” She thought for a moment. “The hedgehog.”
Henry wisely chose to keep any objections to himself. (c)

“If you can’t beat them, join them?” (c)
Q:
Some people do horrible things because of their beliefs... And some people choose beliefs that let them do horrible things. (c)

“Every secret you’ve been keeping will find its way out. Every decision you make will be questioned. You will be audited, investigated, and transferred to the most hellish nightmare of a desk job I can find. Now, get out of my way.” (c)

Well, that was quite the wild ride. Kudos to the author for actually writing a thrilling thriller -- this book was suspenseful and twisty and dark in a way that YA thrillers usually aren't. I was never able to accurately predict what would happen, and the surprises just kept coming.

The Fixer moved a little bit away from the focus in book one on Tess's "fixing" -- like Olivia Pope in Scandal, she spent a good deal of time as a quasi-vigilante, helping fellow students with their problems. There is one "fix" in this book, and Tess continues her role as a champion for the underdog, which is nice. But I'd say that this book moves more firmly into political thriller category, taking the events from book one and building on them to create a gripping and intricately plotted story that plunged Tess, Vivvie, Asher and Henry into a believably terrifying situation. I love it when an author makes really gutsy narrative choices - there were some things here that I definitely didn't see coming!

So ... about that romance. After the first book, I was curious about what form (if any) the romance in this story was going to take. There were two guys in the first book, but not really any romance. So I was totally waiting for a triangle to develop (this author has used them in the past.) But in this book, the whole romantic aspect took a very interesting turn. Let's just say that I'm not sure things are exactly what they seem, but who knows? That's been the case in the plot, so maybe the romance will follow suit.

Definitely recommended for readers of thrillers and especially political thrillers!

OMG HOW CAN THIS BE THE END????

My heart.
My heart.
My heart.

Good lord can we get a kickstarter or something to fund getting a next book published. I’m crying inside because there isn’t more!!!

_________________

I sped through The Fixer in less than a day… one of my challenges for myself this last part of the year is to read 6 books that have been on my shelf for way too long. This fell in that category. I’d heard how wonderful they were so mostly the delay in reading was just time related. Now I’m just kicking myself that I waited so long. After devouring The Fixer, I grabbed The Long Game and now I’m a huge mess of feelings.

You know what the first sign of a good book is for me? I finished this series 24 hours ago and I’m still thinking about it. I believe the main reason I’m still thinking about it is because I feel like I still don’t have all the answers I want. That’s certainly isn’t to say that the story doesn’t wrap up nicely (because word on the street is that there will never be a 3rd book), it’s just to say that my heart is cracked in pieces and sneaky people are sneaky and OMG just give me more!

So… spoilers abound after this line so I’m warning you, if you haven’t yet read these books (WHICH YOU SHOULD) then don’t read ahead.
.
.
.

My immediate comparison while reading this series was to that of AKA and Going Rogue by Robin Benway… though this is a bit LESS fluffy. A lot of shit goes down you guys, but the overall feel of it was similar to me… a suspense filled YA with intriguing and amazing characters and just an overall engrossing and fun read. If you haven’t picked these books up yet, I highly suggest you do and then come back and chat with me about EVERYTHING.

Seriously though… maybe I can pay Jennifer Lynn Barnes to write me some futuretakes? Anyone want to kick in? Now excuse me while I go get the rest of her backlist off my shelves.

Yup, still.

Raise your hand if you ever felt personally victimised by Jennifer Lynn Barnes!

No? Not yet?

Hold onto that. :)

If this is the final book in the series, then I'm sorry, it was fucking amazing but I'm a little annoyed because 1) I'm sad it's over already and 2) there are so many things left open. :(

Once again, that was an exciting adventure.

The story picks up close to when the first book ended, and carries all the same elements that made the first book great. It was full of amazing, well-rounded characters. All of those darky, twisty turns you didn't see coming or were in complete denial about. It got my blood pumping so fast, I couldn't put it down once I picked it up.

This plot was more politic focused than the last book, and just as intricate. What starts out as Tess doing Emilia a favor for her class-president campaign quickly morphs into.....well, not merely a class-prez campaign. I didn't expect it to escalate so much, but it did, and boy, was it juicy.
description

AND OHMYGOODNESS CAN WE TALK ABOUT SOME OF THOSE PLOT TWISTS IN A NON-SPOILERY MANNER?!?! They hurt when they happened. They hurt real bad. I had no idea who to trust, Tess and I had our eyes on everybody.
description

The romance definitely grew from what it was in the first book, which was essentially nonexistent. Tess, nor any of the other characters, are gooey romantics, so it doesn't get steamy or scandalous, but it's definitely cute to see the romantic tension grow when Tess is completely oblivious to rowdy behavior such as that.
description

So the book was great. As hoped for and expected. Can't wait for round three!

Happy Reading!!!

Wow. This one left me a little speechless. I'm not usually one for politics and that sort of story, but I was sucked in by the first book and couldn't wait to read this one.

Tess and her group of friends are interesting. I've always like Tess's headstrong personality. She smart and conniving without being horrible and cold. I love that she's all brains and that she's able to connect the dots in places others don't see. However, Asher will always be my favorite.

There is a lot going on in this book. Every time I thought I had it figured out, something would be revealed and it would blow my mind. And I'm still reeling from the ending. I can't wait for the next book.

Jennifer Lynn Barnes quickly became one of my new favourite authors with her The Naturals series. When I heard about The Fixer, a YA Scandal type book, I rushed to read it, and loved it so much. I knew I'd need to get The Long Game asap, especially after seeing so many glowing reviews.

The Long Game does not disappoint. Now that Tess knows that her sister, Ivy, is in fact her mother, and she's also part of the prestigious Keyes family, she realises her life will never be normal. She continues to champion and fight for the underdog, but when the President is shot, and she becomes more and more drawn into real, tangible threats, her life is at risk and her name is just the beginning.

So much happened in this book! From the beginning, there was no sort of lull - we were thrust into the action from the get go, and the various plots were just popping up here, there, and everywhere. Tess knows she really shouldn't be doing any investigating, but of course she doesn't listen, and is put at risk so many times. She has grown so much, though, from The Fixer. She now accepts that her relationship with Ivy isn't normal, but because of her name, and position in the political elite of Washington, she hasn't got time to worry about trivial things like that.

This book has all the feels, let me tell you, and not just in the cushy, swoony type of feels. I was scared, angry, sad, happy, and just about every other type of emotion I could be with this book, especially at the end. Because of how treacherous D.C. life is, even Tess can't see everything coming, and we got to see her vulnerability at times, because of this and the betrayals she faced.

There is some romance in this book, but not too much, because the plot is far more important. There's twist and turns everywhere, and the romance is not immune to this. I've got to say though, if this is truly the last book in the series, then it was just cruel. It ended with, not really a cliffhanger as such, but there were so many threads that hadn't been resolved, and we need more to have a proper ending to the series!

This book follows up from "The Fixer".
As it was vaguely hinted in the ending, there is a deeper conspiracy under the surface, and the mystery is not really solved.

While the previous book was mostly touching on topics like family, teenage pregnancy, and finding out who you are in relation to what you know or don't know about your family ties, this one steps in more delicate territory such as:
- girls being rufied (no SA thankfully)
- bullying
- eating disorders
- school shootings
- terrorism
- death

Barnes balances fun and lightness with tough subjects, touching them lightly, but without making light of them.
From an adult stand point it feels like she's trying to tell the younger audiences it's ok to ask for help, but without being intrusive or pedantic, or indulging on platitudes.

It's more like a friend that shows support sitting beside you, acknowledging your pain in the silence that lingers, showing, not telling, that your pain is legit and they will be there for you on your terms.

Say what you want, but Barnes writes her characters pretty three-dimensional. They might not be realistic, but they do seem real. I feel I can poke them in the cheek if only I extended my arm.

Ladies and gentlemen, THIS is how you write a mind-blowing sequel to an already thrilling YA thriller. I was simply incapable of putting it down. Tess is probably my favorite JLB heroine, I totally fell in love with her in this book.

There is one thing I don't understand - HOW is this duology not talked about more?? I get the hype with The Inheritance Games (the prevalent romance is probably what people like about it), but it has nothing on The Fixer and its sequel, nothing. And there was even a hint of romance that I adored (I know, fool me, I cried and I'm not okay) and that doesn't happen very often. And the twists! Most of them I should've seen coming because they made sense (I just didn't want to see them sometimes - you know what I'm talking about if you've read it), but damn did I enjoy them.

One more thing - please, please give Barnes' books better covers, they deserve it T_T

While I didn't like this one as much as the first one, I really liked the actual "fixer" stuff the MC got up. When the book was focused there, that was when it was most successful IMO

It's easy to forget sometimes in between releases, especially with a new series, how much fun it is and how memorable the characters are. And let me tell you, when it comes to Asher and Vivvie, they are two characters (secondary characters at that) that stand out. In fact, this whole series is filled with memorable fun characters.

I was laughing out loud after the first couple of pages and had a smile on my face so big, that my cheeks hurt and because of it, I was immediately pulled right back into the story and was reminded once again why this series and really all her series, are always so much fun.

There were so many things that took place throughout this book. Things I didn't see coming and never expected to happen and it was wonderful. It is so refreshing to have a YA mystery that isn't transparent. One that is entertaining, keep me on my toes, and keeps me guessing and above all, highly additive. I ended up reading this in a matter of hours and I hadn't even planned on getting so caught up in it, I truly love it when that happens. When you open a books and what is one the pages is so magical and captivating that before you know it, hours have passed and you are done and left wanting more.

Barnes hands down has always been that author for me and it is why I will always pick up her books without hesitation and know that I am in for a treat when I read them. This was an amazing sequel, every bit as fast paced and wonderfully done as the first, if not better. I can't wait for more.

FREAKING AMAZING!

This review was originally posted at https://freadomlibrary.wordpress.com/

Critically
Plot – 4.5 out of 5 stars
I thought these books could not get any better but I was totally wrong! The first book was intense but this just blew it out of the water. It’s action packed, intense, emotional, powerful and full of twists and turns and high stakes. There’s so much suspense and secrets and violence and you know never what the next page will bring. I thought I had things figured out but there are always new revelations and betrayals that you NEVER see coming. AND I WANT MORE!

Writing Style – 4 out of 5 stars
I am such a huge fan of the writing style for these books because it definitely lends well to the plot. It’s intricate but completely honest and outright. It’s fast paced and intense and it’s totally addicting and easy to fly to. I was so completely engaged into the story thanks to the writing style. Even with the dire situations, there was still humor and lighthearted moments which I really appreciated.

Characters – 5 out of 5 stars
I don’t think I could possibly fall in love with these characters more than I have from this book. They’re all special and complex and flawed and intense. Tess is amazing. She’s fierce and determined and selfless. She literally puts her life on the life for the people she loves in this book and I was in awe of her. Her character development through the series is so intense and extensive, I admired her. She’s cunning and intelligent and powerful. I want to know more about her life after the events of this book. The side characters are also completely awesome, I swear the entire cast is just so intricate. Emilia is a character that gets more of a spotlight in this book and she’s a freaking badass. I want to know more about her. Asher is a precious little cinnamon roll who owns my heart with his wit and humor and love. Vivvie is so sweet and honest, I almost want to say that she’s too innocent for this kind of book but she brings such a light to the story. Ivy has won me over. She’s so amazing and I love how hard she works to create a relationship with Tess. And then there’s Henry who just broke my heart.

the long game by jennifer lynn barnes bookstagram.jpg
The Fixer was the first Jennifer Lynn Barnes book that I had ever read, but after reading it I knew that I needed to return to this author. Since then I have read a bunch of her novels and loved them all, but The Fixer was one of my favorites. There is this emotionally manipulative aspect to it that made it clear Jennifer Lynn Barnes studied psychology and that background made her novels amazing. I had tried to get this sequel from libraries after it finally came out, but they didn't have it. I asked for it for my birthday and am finally able to return to the series that started my love of Jennifer Lynn Barnes' writing.

The Long Game was super fast paced and the stakes were higher than ever. I whipped right through this book, but found myself disappointed as it didn't live up to my expectations. I found the stakes to be a little too high, so high that the tension didn't feel like it matched the story. The scenes should have felt packed with adrenaline, but since the stakes were so high throughout the whole book the climax of the book didn't feel like it packed any more tension than the rest of the story. It just fell a little flat for me.

I wanted to get to know the characters better. They all seem really interesting, but we don't get the chance to really get to know them. I wanted more character development, but I got all action. I could have gone for some lower stakes. I love Tess and Ivy, but I feel like this story didn't do these characters justice. Ivy is supposed to make scandals disappear for important political people of Washington D.C. and Tess is supposed to fix scandals for their kids, but Tess winds up getting too involved with Ivy's work. I feel like we could have had a better story if Tess stuck to fixing her classmates scandals instead. Maybe it's just because it had been so long since I read the first book, but I thought that it was much better than this one.

Overall, I love Jennifer Lynn Barnes' novels, but this one fell short of my expectations. I found that the stakes were too high so the climax of the story fell a bit flat. I wanted to get to know the characters better, but this book was all action. I will continue to read Jennifer Lynn Barnes' novels, as a lot of them are amazing and I will continue with this series in hopes that the next one is better. If you are looking for a fast paced read, this is perfect, but if you are looking to get to know the characters from the first novel better, you will be disappointed.

This is a soap opera, minus the escapism.

This is the story of how government isn't just corrupt, but evil at every level, all the more so the higher up you get; how terrorism is waiting around every corner; and how Washington shrugs off life-altering traumas when needed to showcase the Amazing Fixer Skills of one Tess Kendrick. (By life-altering traumas, I mean your standard kidnappings, political assassinations, and hostage situations, of course.)

Oh, and it's also about how no one in Washington has read Harry Potter.

I was going to be coolly dispassionate, but instead I got mad. Here's the thing: I can do dark. I don't particularly love it, but I can appreciate it to a point. What I can't appreciate is a body count - from about three different confluent attacks, because this is a Happening City - solely to advance our protagonist's story.

Which is to say: the CW would still adapt this, but this would be the season 4 story, around the time the novelty of a high school fixer with powerful Washington connections wears off, the high school drama isn't intriguing enough anymore, and the network has to resort to multiple meaningless deaths to compel attention.

Oh, and of course the entire plot hinges on a series of coincidences, because that's how soap operas work. Serious spoilers:

The funny thing is, I can appreciate where this book comes from: despair at government corruption, fear of vulnerability to terrorism - but those elements are swirled together into an over-the-top drama that completely sacrifices character development, and so the story cripples itself.

Just finished this wonderful, soul gutting book... and I am a mess. I NEED THE NEXT BOOK NOW! Everybody has to start this series. If you like smart, thrilling reads definitely pick up The Fixer books. The Long Game was an amazing sequel; Barnes developed and built on her amazing characters and intensified the plot to perfection.

Tess, our main character, is smart, determined, meddlesome, and amazing. She gets herself into many wild schemes and plots that had me on the edge of my seat. Our other characters, Ivy, Henry, Asher, Vivvie, Emilia, Bodie, and Adam, are all interesting, unique, and lovable in their own way (sometimes). The relationship between Ivy and Tess is so wonderful and tough and emotionally hard to read about.

I was enjoying the ride (A LOT) for the first half of the novel. BUT then the ending came and it killed me. I'm dead. So many twists... So many political games and intense scenes. My heart couldn't handle it all.

The Long Game is dark, sometimes funny, smart as a whip, twisty, and overall brilliant.. Read this book. Also, I really really really want book #3. So tell all your friends about this series! PLEASE for my sake and well being.

Personal Thoughts: OH MY GOD I LOVED THIS BOOK. After adjusting to teenagers being privy to the happenings of the US Government, I ended up enjoying The Fixer which is book one in the series. I thought I would have similar feelings toward The Long Game but boy oh boy did the feelings this book inspired come out of nowhere! The Long Game is exponentially better than The Fixer. My only issue now is that the sales aren’t high enough and Disney hasn’t contracted Jennifer Lynn Barnes to write a third book (AND THERE NEEDS TO BE A THIRD BOOK, TRUST ME OKAY?!).

Plot Summary: In this follow up to The Fixer, Tess Kendrick embraces her role as Hardwicke’s resident fixer. Someone cashes in a favor and she ends up leading their campaign to become president of student council. Meanwhile, her guardian, Ivy, is working on cracking a terrorism case unfolding in the United States and chaos ensues when both issues intertwine.

Critique: The Long Game had much higher stakes than The Fixer which you might find hard to believe if you’ve already read book one. I came to appreciate Asher even more in this installment because his comic relief was a necessary addition to the otherwise intense situations. The Long Game is full of action in the best way possible. The story pulls you in and there’s such a sense of urgency for every issue that it’ll get your heart rate pumping. I also loved the parallels to the game of Chess which were prevalent in the story. But best of all are the characters who shine even more than they did in book one. The Long Game is overflowing with awesome female characters from Tess and Ivy, to Vivie, Emilia and Georgia, and as I mentioned above, the only disappointment is not knowing how their story will continue. The series was sold as a dulogy, but there is a CLEAR cliffhanger at the end of book two. It’s rather frustrating but I am still grateful that I was able to spend any time with these characters and I will forever hold out hope that a second duology or even just a final installment with some more closure will be on the horizon. Also, if you’re looking for romance, this series is almost completely devoid. It focuses much more on the politics and social issues.

Do I Recommend?: YES PLEASE READ THIS AND HELP MY DREAM OF A THIRD BOOK BE REALIZED THANKS.

Oh wauw.

Do you like Scandal? Do you like political thrillers? Do you like mind games? WELL. YOU HAVE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE. But also, go read book one which is called The Fixer and is amazing.

So, if The Fixer made you swoon and made your heart beat faster and nearly killed you, I have some real bad news for you. It all gets worse in The Long Game. I had my feels shredded, my OTPs stomped on and my heart set on fire. I hope Jennifer Lynn Barnes at least feels a little bad about what she did to me.

Tess is still as amazing as always if a little more nosy than she should be. She thinks she is nothing like her sister but we all know that she enjoys fixing other people’s problems and helping the underdog. The thing about her is that even with her hero-like qualities, she doesn’t quite become a trope. She is more complex and multi-layered than that. There is more to her with her insecurities and her imperfections and her tendency to NOT always be right or do the ‘right’ thing.

But then again, most of the characters in this book are. Barnes takes complex characters who walk the grey line to a whole new level in this book. THE PUNCHES. I am still not over this book. So basically, if you thought you knew what the characters were capable of, think again because they will surprise you and hurt your fee-fees (feels).

I think many of us have wondered whether or not The Long Game would have more romance and the answer to that is complicated. The book has one of the swooniest kisses ever but also so much heartbreak and not enough cuddles. Some ships sail and others don’t and it’s all very complex. Much like the characters. Much like literally everything about this book.

The plot is also really amazing but there is one twist which I have not entirely made up my mind about and is also the reason why this book doesn’t get the entire 5 stars. I love twists but it turns out, I am super picky about them. Oops. And even though it’s been a while since I finished this book, I still haven’t made up my mind yet about that twist. I don’t know if it works for the book and there are certain things it might suggest which I don’t think the author wanted it to.

Overall though, this book is still amazing and this series is amazing and please read/buy it so that I can get a third book. If you don’t want to do it for yourself, DO IT FOR ME. TAKE PITY ON ME. LET ME HAVE THE THIRD BOOK.

Note that I read an advanced copy of this book, courtesy of a friend who took pity on my soul

I finished this book nearly three days ago and I read it in one sitting, and OHHH MY GOD - Jennifer Lynn Barnes has done it yet again with this sequel. I died and came back to life just to scream and squeal so many times as I was reading this novel, and I am still in shock. And awe. And everything in between because, AHHH!!

I honestly want this series to become a tv show. I think it's such a kick ass story as is and it would be so cool to see it brought to life. I have so much love for these characters and all of the antics that they get up to, and I freaking love how they're lil mini heroes in their own right. I love the politics of this and I love how Barnes has made it so easy to understand and so easy to keep up with - it's dramatic and tense and keeps you on the edge of your seat and then Barnes throws in those freaking mind-blowing one-liners at the end of every chapter that has you going, WHAAAAT?! out loud all over again and I found myself turning the page so quickly that I nearly tore it off the spine of the book.

Anyways. This series is fan-freaking-tastic and I want everyone to get into this because it's amazing and mind-blowing and completely overwhelming, in the best way possible. I really, really hope that there's another book to this series because that ending was a MESS and I was a mess and I need more of these characters because nothing about this story is okay in terms of where it is plot wise at the moment. Like, I don't think I can cope if there isn't going to be another book in this series. There just has to. I don't know if I'll be able to live without a continuation.

This is by far my favorite series that I've picked up and read this year, and honestly 10/10 would recommend - everyone pls read it and join the party because it's a wild one over here.

4.5/5 sterren. Niet verwacht dat het zo'n spannend, heftig en sterk boek zou zijn. Ik was al fan van het eerste deel, maar dit tweede deel heeft alles overtroffen.

The Long Game is the second book and the conclusion to the duology that started with The Fixer. In this last instalment, the mystery increases tenfold and Tess must race to save the people she loves when they are threatened.
“It’s a favor for a friend,” I said. “That’s it.”

“You’re a Kendrick,” Bodie told me, taking the turn toward Ivy’s house. “Favors for friends have a way of complicating themselves.”

I should have known from reading The Naturals series that when it comes to sequels, this author does not mess about. The stakes are higher, the mysteries get crazier and the novel is so action-packed and fast-paced that it’s surprise I didn’t get whiplash reading it. I feel like so much happened in this book and the plot was stronger than the first and there were so many revelations, new dramas, twists and turns, and shocking betrayals. I was on the edge of my seat and even when the mystery was unravelled and the book was concluding, there was still little hints that it was not over. And I was right! The book concludes the mystery somewhat but in terms of the larger mystery, Tess comes to a realisation that the suspect is still out there and that she knows who it is! So I feel like there needs to be another book! I WANT MORE!

“Tess, has anyone ever told you that you’re an absolute vision when you’re plotting something?” Asher Rhodes shot a lazy grin in my direction.

“Asking for a friend,” Asher clarified. Then he nudged his best friend. “Henry, my good man, tell Tess she’s pretty as a picture when she’s preparing to unleash her wrath on the delightfully unsuspecting father of one of our classmates.”

“Kendrick?” Henry Marquette said.

“Yes?” I replied without taking my eyes away from the street.

“You are utterly terrifying when you are plotting something.”

The characters, as always, were just amazing. Asher is just incredible I can’t express how much I love him. He is the best thing about the series and I liked that he showed some vulnerability in this instalment. I also loved Vivvie and the friendship that she had with Tess. One of my favourite characters is definitely Emilia who deserves the world. She’s got an icy exterior but I know that deep down she just wants somewhere to belong and I’m glad that Tess was looking out for her throughout the book.
“I have faith that you will break every rule that you have to break to do whatever you think is right,” Henry said. I felt his breath on my face with each word. “I have faith that you won’t lie to me. That you won’t ever pretend to be something you’re not.” His eyes caught on mine—caught in mine, as if my gaze had swallowed his whole.”

Now, after there being no romance in The Fixer, the sequel was setting up little moments between Henry and Tess which culminated in a kiss. But the way the plot unfolded, with Henry betraying Tess by working for the terrorists, I just can’t explain how much of a shock that was. I had to pause from reading the book and then read that part again just to make sure that I was actually reading it right. I can’t believe it happened. But I’m glad that Tess stood her ground and didn’t forgive Henry. Her speech to him at the end was really, really well done and it’s why she’s such an amazing character. Because she’s got a backbone, she takes no shit, and she knew she deserved better. However, there is still something simmering between those two which is why I think another book would be a great idea. I think there’s potential there to explore a really interesting relationship!
“I love you,” she said. “More than anything. You know that, right?”

“Sure.” I didn’t want those words to affect me the way they did. I didn’t want them to mean that much. I didn’t want them to hurt.

“I mean it, Tessie. If it came down to the rest of the world or you, I would pick you every single time.”

Overall, The Long Game was an amazing conclusion to what was action-packed, twisty and addictive duology. Jennifer Lynn Barnes is definitely an author whose books are worth the read!

What factor did I expect to play a role in the midterm elections? C-O-R-R-U-P-T-I-O-N.

Tess Kendrick is back — and this time, she's beggining to (almost) fully embrace her role as a fixer for the sons and daughters of the political elite of Washington, D.C. She's running Emilia's campaign for student council president, but, of course, when every other kid in school has a father in Senate, the stakes are much higher than in your usual school election. And then there's the fact that there's been a terrorist attack and her sister/guardian/ Ivy has been called in to deal with the aftermath and spin the story in a nice way to the press.

Y'know. Just another day in the Kendrick life.

The Long Game is every bit as entertaining as the first book in this series, The Fixer. Jennifer Lynn Barnes is an amazing author; she writes fast-paced, action-packed books that are pretty much unputdownable (is that a word) because there's SO MUCH happening ALL THE TIME, you never want to stop.

(I don't think this review spoils anything that happened during the first book, but in any case, if you haven't read the first, GO READ IT and then come back here thanks)

Tess is one of my favorite YA heroines because she actually thinks—and she also does stupid shit because guess what, she's 17! And 17 years old do stupid, impulsive things! I feel like she is one of the most realistic portrayals of a level-headed teenage girl. She's wise enough to be considered mature, responsible, and to earn her fame as a hardcore fixer, but she doesn't sound like she's wise beyond her years. I find her very relatable. And I love pretty much all the characters in this series; Tess and little merry band of friends, and the way they all interact. If they were getting to know each other better in the first book, this time around they're more comfortable together and I loved to see the way they interacted in their group. Special shoutout goes to Asher, who is still my favorite character in the entire series, and has officially risen to the status of My Book Boyfriend.

Also, speaking of Asher, I was so happy there was no mention of a love geometry going on here! It was a big concern of mine when I finished The Fixer, but there's nothing hinting at it and Tess and Asher's friendship is just glorious and I love them and I'm so happy this book exists!
"Tess, has anyone ever told you that you're an absolute vision when you're plotting something?"

It wasn't flawless, obviously. The main issue I had with this one is also a biiiiig spoiler, so seriously, DON'T READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE BOOK!

If you're looking for a read to take your mind off of things, something that will completely suck you in and keep you focused on a world for hours — choose this series. It's supes entertaining, but I gotta warn you, you'll be in pure need of the third book when you finish it and waiting for it will be hell.

Thank you so much Avni for buddy reading this with me

SUCH A BIG STEP UP FROM THE FIRST BOOK, I LOVED THE PLOT TWIST SO MUCH. This book literally had me screaming at night because of that plot twist. My initial complaint about this book was that Tess felt extremely bland and boring and that changed SO.MUCH in this book. She's such a badass fixer and a strong woman, I started really loving her.

I can't really say much about some of the characters without spoiling cause they take an extremely different turn, I'M STILL NOT OVER THE ONE THING THAT HAPPENED!!!! I can't really say much without spoiling. Miss Jennifer Lynn Barnes writes books I want to read and write, I was a little disappointed with the first book because there weren't enough secrets but THIS has it. I've read some of her other books and all I can say is that she isn't afraid of completely turning around everything she's build-up so far. NEVER TRUST ANYONE IN HER BOOKS, THEY MIGHT BE SECRETLY PLANNING EVERYONE'S DEATH.

The only thing I didn't really love was the ending cause I feel like it was kind of rushed?? I really wouldn't mind a third book. The beginning was also kinda slow but in the last 100 pages, THIS BOOK WAS PLAYING WITH MY EMOTIONS. If you're conflicted about whether to pick this or not cause you're unsure about the first book, I'd say plz pick it up because this is so much better than the first.
