Hidden Currents

Rate this book
A steamy MM beach romance full of secrets, slow-burn chemistry, and the tide that pulls them together.
When photographer Miles Whitmore flees to the Colombian coast to escape the ghosts of his past, he expects silence—not a storm. And certainly not the kind that takes the shape of Enzo Medina, a passionate marine biologist with a guarded heart and a reef to protect at all costs.
Their first meeting? A disaster.
Their chemistry? Undeniable.
And the longer they stay tangled in each other’s orbit, the harder it becomes to let go.
But both men are hiding something.
And the deeper the current pulls them, the more dangerous the truth becomes.

Two men at a solitary part of their lives. The initial clash when they meet immediately shows us Enzo's passionate temperament and Miles' more quiet brooding strength. The sounds, sights and smells of the sea play a major role in this seduction of the reader into the low hum of passion that explodes as the story unfolds. The slow build up since their initial explosive meeting coils a tension that matches the storms that hit when they come together.
More is promised to us in future chapters, but for now we are left with a beautiful pact that these men have chosen to stay together.

The backdrop of the fishing village Ryan Moore has invited us into resonates with me as I live in such a place, so once again I feel at home here and I can almost see this story unfold right before my eyes. With very few words between them, Enzo and Miles recognize each other as more than just one night of passion and I can't wait to see more of them.

Riptides: Enzo's Story
"I don't mix business with pleasure"
Explained to the fourth degree. I feel sorry for Enzo and yet understand that for him, his stance on conservation is much more important than people and he has yet to find someone who will honestly walk beside him on his path.
The obvious knowledge Ryan Moore shows on the subjects Enzo works on make this a very immersive and convincing read.

Bahia Escondida, Columbia: Miles is floating in the Sea, running from his photojournalist life, having seen too much and been burned by it; for it. Jarred from his thoughts, he is confronted by Enzo, reef conservationist/biologist; he is too close to the endangered coral. Anger and tension give way slowly to begrudging respect and slow comradeship. Both men have been burned by life, confronted with too much, both just want to coexist peacefully with nature, to be quiet for a time. Both are disquieted by the tension that eddies around them, between them, the unspoken, unasked-for pull of the current.
- Once more, Ryan Moore's characters react to the pull of attraction as it ebbs and flows like the Ocean; neither is looking for the passion that will explode like the abrupt Storm that has them seeking shelter and Heat from each other in a small conservation hut. Miles finds Enzo gone in the morning, not wanting to 'mix business with pleasure.' A curious statement that leaves Miles adrift, packing up to leave, but not quite ready to go.
- A final reconciliation/reunion that leaves the reviewer's romantic heart beating a bit too fast; hands touching beneath the water's surface; a slow walk along the ebb tide. Sigh.

- 'Riptides' is Ryan Moore's 'freebie' story detailing Enzo's trauma from disillusioned grad student to seasoned Conservation Biologist, his history of blurred lines between professional and love lives. From Columbia to Chile, then to Manilla and back to Columbia, Enzo has learned hard relationship lessons on sustainability 'when professional and personal interest conflict.'
- Enzo's mantra not to mix 'business and pleasure' causes him to run from Miles at first, but he realizes theirs isn't a professional relationship, and he adapts to sustain his own personal life, much as he does the Coral ecosystem. Personal growth. Bravo, Mr. Moore!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book. This book is a part of the Private Encounters short stories collection. Each book is an MM romance. They are not connected and can be read in any order.
Miles is a photographer just trying to get some great pictures. While Enzo is on the island to help secure some endangered coral. They are drawn to each other from the beginning.
I have enjoyed all of these short stories.

Ryan Moore’s Hidden Current is a tender, slow-burn MM beach romance that captures the emotional ebb and flow of falling in love with the quiet intensity of waves lapping at the shore. Set against the backdrop of a sleepy coastal town, the story follows Miles, a photographer running from his past, and Enzo, a marine biologist with deep complexities.

What sets Hidden Current apart is its emotional restraint. There’s depth in the quiet moments, and Ryan doesn’t rely on melodrama instead, he trusts the strength of his characters and the setting to carry the romance. When the spark finally ignites, it’s deeply satisfying like watching a tide you’ve been tracking finally rise.

Ryan has a way of painting a scene that makes me feel like it’s me floating on the ocean, breathing in the salt filled air, and feeling the sand between my toes as I walk along the beach. Of course I have to mention Ryan’s words “a stretch of coral reef so vivid that even its whispers seemed urgent, warning him of secrets deeper than the turquoise depths.”

The story slowly flows in with a gentle pull that grows stronger between Miles and Enzo. Both men are trying to get away from their pasts. They clash, then connect. A touch, electric. A kiss, ends too soon. A storm, and they can no longer resists each other. The story ends in the best way with the possibility of a deep, long enduring connection. Can’t wait to see what the future holds for these two passionate men.

When Miles and Enzo meet for the first time, they have an explosive moment. As the story went further on, these men realized that they had an undeniable pull towards each other and couldn't quite understand why considering their view on relationships. Miles refused to say goodbye in the end and Enzo showed up in the nick of time to just be present with him, the salt and the sea.

Can't wait for the next part of their story and hopefully an exciting future for them!

I received an ARC from the author and this is my honest review

Miles is a photographer who travels to Bahia Escondida in Colombia to disconnect from everything, his last job has left him scarred and he needs to get away from the world.

Enzo is a marine biologist who tries to protect the reefs, he lives a solitary life, leaving people aside, only worried about his project (protecting nature shouldn´t be a business, but an obligation).

The two meet when they need each other the most, but it takes them a little while to realize it.
