Invictus: Eyes of an Empire

Rate this book
The brooding anarchist, Zeke Slate, an exile of the Realm, has been offered a truce by the Queen to bring back Aureleah Roy who lives on Earth. Upon capturing and returning her to the Realm, he will be able to rejoin society.

A prophecy was spoken that haunts the current regime as they deal with rogue anarchists, wandering exiles and an enemy planet that is ready to destroy them at any given moment, making it imperative that Aureleah Roy be returned to the Realm.

"Violet eyes, reflect violet skies, in a world of lies, in which it ties, a gal beyond her years, and with no fears, a forestall of gall, aurous hair, a walking snare, will fight the fights of infernal flare."

An anxious game of cat and mouse between anarchist and princess, a tug of war between Royals over a kingdom not their own, and a twisted betrothal... ready to rock your world.

Way outside of my normal preferred genre so not sure if I'm a good judge for this book! I'm not sure if it's dystopian or fantasy or sci-fi; possibly all three! It had many unique elements: featured a large family with seven grown children with grandchildren, etc for main characters. The world building and the hierarchy of eye colors made me think of a Sanderson novel. I had a hard time following the plot at times, and I was a bit surprised to realize the main character was a teen (thought he was a grown man for the first few chapters). Also there's quite a few explicit scenes and the characters are mostly all morally complex -- everyone's sort of out for themselves except the main female character. It's set up to be a series, therefore ends on a cliffhanger.

All The Stars!!

Invictus: Eyes of an Empire had me hooked from cover to cover!! couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Every character felt essential to the story, each bringing their own weight and complexity. Just when I thought I had someone figured out, they'd surprise me, which made it impossible to put down. I enjoyed watching Leah come into her own, her growth was powerful, and I just know she's going to take book two by storm. The ending left me eager and excited, already counting the days until I can get my eyes on book 2 and dive back into this world.
It’s definitely a quick read and is Multi-POV

Obviously I am going to be biased since I wrote this book. However, ultimately this book is a tale of love, found family, making the best of a situation that is so unhinged and foreign and being able to overcome the adversity of what life throws at you.

Leah always thought she was a human. She didn't know she'd be thrown into a world of geopolitics, of lies, of betrayal, of truly inhumane actions and treatment. Her purple eyes giving her the power of "the voice" makes for the perfect storm as her voice is your command.

Zeke has always been a rebel. As a grey-eyed, he's suffered the issue of not following authority, not following what he's told, and acting on his own accord.

Their mixture of personality becomes 'invictus'--unconquerable, with Zeke using critical thinking to assess societies and various personalities, whereas Leah is used to getting her way all the time.

I hope you give it a chance :)
