Barbara Sergiou writes dark romantic fiction and mythic romantacy crafted in ash and ink.
Based in Cyprus, she creates novels that breathe ruin, obsession, betrayal — and characters who never ask for salvation. Only fire.
She writes in both English and Greek, sculpting voices that don’t apologize and stories that leave bruises.
Barbara believes love shouldn’t save you. It should scar you. When she’s not building alternate mythologies by candlelight, she’s drinking bitter coffee, collecting relics of rage, and whispering prayers only her Saints would understand.
Author of Devil’s Dance, Book One of the Burnt Saints standalone series. Now burning on Kindle Unlimited.
2 stars — A passionate indie effort with too many twists for one tale
Barbara Sergiou kindly sent me two of her independently published books, and I truly appreciate the heart behind that. Devil’s Dance features Sylvia as its central character, and the story kicks off with the promise of a forbidden age-gap romance — professor and student, tension and intrigue. But just as I settled into that setup, the tone shifted. Suddenly, Sylvia’s best friend’s brother is romantically interested, and before I could catch my breath, we’re swept into mafia-style drama.
It’s all Sylvia, all the time — but the sheer number of plotlines packed into one short book left me confused and disoriented. The transitions felt abrupt, and the translation didn’t always help; character conversations sometimes lost their emotional clarity or came across awkwardly. I also noticed a few contradictions in character behaviour and story logic that pulled me out of the narrative.
That said, Barbara’s writing does shine in moments — especially when she describes scenery. Her attention to atmosphere and setting brought a real sense of place, and I found myself pausing to appreciate those passages. There’s creativity here, and with more focused storytelling and smoother translation, I think her voice could truly shine.
