Full Disclosure: Drew Hayes is a being from another realm - one where writing at an elite level is a superpower.

Prove me wrong, I dare you, because I refuse to believe that this level of insight into human nature, quiet humor, and tight plotting can possibly have originated from a mortal man. Am I exaggerating? Not going to admit it if I am. Just know that I've read and loved thousands of books and I would still pick a Drew Hayes book over almost anyone else. I mean, I'm not giving up Tarzan for anyone, sorry Drew.

Which brings me to this one. This is a quiet entry off to the side of the Villain's Code series. It fills in the gaps left by the main series' focus on more prominent characters and it also gives us more backstory for everyone's favorite villain, Ivan. I was happy to get all of it, and will be there, cash in hand, whenever Mr. Hayes is ready to give us more.

The first story is about everyone's favorite golden boy turned bad, Apollo. Surprisingly, this is the darkest story of all, and I found it more than a little heartbreaking. I didn't expect the turn it took but I was happy to see Apollo dealing with the consequences of his choices so gracefully.

The second story was a continuation of The Princess and the Peril from the first Villian's Vignettes. It's backstory for Ivan and he's a quiet presence in the story, as much myth as man, and that's good because it lets the others shine. Ivan has never sought the limelight, but when you need a blunt hammer, he's your guy.

Finally, the last story is Drew Hayes' version of summer camp and it hits every note you would expect from him in that genre, and then some. It was fun hanging out with the young meta-humans and following Ivan's son, Rick, as he navigates the world while trying to hide the full extent of his new abilities.

I would never say that you shouldn't read Mr. Hayes' books, but you shouldn't read this one... not until you read the others in the series. You would miss so much and feel lost, and that would be a shame. Look at it this way, I'm not saying you can't have this, just go enjoy the delicious meal Mr. Hayes has prepared for you first and then you can appreciate this the way it should be, as the dessert, not the main course.

Drew Hayes is one of my all-time favorite superhero authors. Ironic given my love of dark fantasy, I prefer superheroes that are goofy with jet packs and gorillas rather than serious grimdark Injustice-style stuff. The author of the SUPER POWERED and VILLAINS CODE series consistently produces a cozy sort of cape world that the bad guys are not that bad while the heroes are very-very good. Indeed, the only truly irredeemable villains are rarely the villains but the heroes who pretend to be good while being evil at heart. Hypocrisy is the truest sign of a monster and that is also a message that resonates with me these days.

One problem that many superhero authors run into, though, is that their universes frequently get so large that you have many amazing characters that don't get enough attention. Some authors make use of anthologies to be able to give these attention, though. The original VILLAINS VIGNETTES was a collection of three novellas that detailed a spooktacular Halloween adventure, a fantasy world alongside the superhero one, and a Christmas adventure. All the sorts of things that you wouldn't necessarily see in the main series.

This installment follows three stories that I found very interesting. The first follows the character of Apollo, who is the disgraced ex-hero from the first novel that was meant to spend the rest of his life behind bars. However, the system is reluctant to punish still-popular heroes when they can make political bank by releasing him back to house arrest in his hometown. The thing is that Apollo doesn't want to be freed, let alone treated as a local hero by his hometown that doesn't care people got killed by his attempt to end the treaty with the supervillain guild.

This is probably my favorite story in the bunch because I love the idea of a disgraced hero coming back to a dying rural community and dealing with the complications of his legacy. He gets to meet a local unappreciated hero and we also get the usual, "One man's hero is another man's villain." It's definitely a very strong start to the collection.

The second story is a continuation of Ivan AKA Fornax wandering around a fantasy world that is overwhelmed by demons. Fornax is less than interested in liberating the world and becomes less so when he discovers the demons may have a reason for their hatred of mankind (reminds me a bit of Ultima VI). As usual, Fornax is an unstoppable killing machine that just needs to get revved up to lay down his horrifying doom powers. This is probably my least favorite plot because I'm not really feeling the mix of superpowers with Medieval Fantasy. I'd much rather get some more modern day Earth action.

The third story is about Ivan's son who received a massive set of changes in CHILLING REFLECTIONS (the third Villains Code book) and is left dealing with the aftermath. Specifically, he's been sent to a superpowered summer camp halfway between Camp Half-Blood and the X-men. There's a lot of new and interesting characters here that could sustain their own series. I was a bit disappointed we didn't see people confront his "true" face but, otherwise, I felt it was a solid and entertaining story.

In conclusion, I thought this was an enjoyable collection of stories and certainly something that fans of the main series should check out. The absence of Tori and company from the book was a disappointment but I absolutely loved the story about Apollo's quasi-redemption. I hope Drew Hayes continues to make stories like this.

3 stories of the in-between-kind 3.5 stars

Villains Vignettes follows 3 separate stories linked either tonally or chronologically with Book #3 in the series. Though mr Hayes talent for writing shows true, this isn't one of his best works. Not due to any flaw in the writing, but in the mix in stories in the bundle. Where the previous bundle had more connection to book 2, this bundle is all over the place.

As such the disjointed nature between the stories disrupted my enjoyment of the bundle as a whole.
So... Good stories, but not the best bundles.

The book brings three new stories, and they are all great! Couldn't stop reading once I started.

Hometown Hero

This is about the former Apollo, a character I was not expecting, and certainly not like this. He is out of jail, on parole, trying to work his way to redemption. And he is a changed man. No matter how wrong and lost he used to be, he understands what he did wrong and is working on becoming a better person. He goes back to his hometown, not able to use his powers and trying to forget his past, but in a town where everyone is still in his corner and still loves him, it's hard for him to let the past behind.

And then things happen, and wow, it was not what I was expecting, what I thought was going to be pretty straightforward twisted at the end and gave an unexpected ending. And what an ending it was. It's hard to find a more satisfying resolution than this one. Loved the story, and I definitely recommended it.

The Priestess and The Peril Part 2

We are back with the adventures of Ivan with Perle, the Priestess who played with fire and discovered she could burn. I love how her white and black vision keeps moving to tones of gray, as she sees that not everything is as easy as she thought and that sometimes you need to accept different perspectives.

She finally understands her companions a little better, especially Ivan, who she thought pure evil, but more and more she realizes there is a reason why he is how he is. And he IS a villain, yes, but even he has standards.

By the end of the book, her world is once again changed, and everything she holds true has shifted again. There is more evil around than she realizes.

Absolutely loved this story and can't wait to see how their adventures conclude, now that we have more clues about what is going on.

Camp Meta

This story is about Rick, Ivan's son, and what happens to him after he finishes his initial training with his father and is ready to go back to civilization. Rick is going to a camp focused on new metahumans learning about their powers.

It all starts normal, but then an unlikely situation forces Rick and his new friends into a life-or-death situation. With Rick learning just how quickly all plans can go astray, and what his limits are in how much he is willing to sacrifice to keep his secrets.

Rick was not one of my favorites, but since what happened in the last book and his time with Ivan, he has changed a lot for the better.

Set in the world of Villain's Code, this is a collection of three novellas:

Hometown Hero is the story of Apollo after his release from prison on parole (after the events of the main series). He is trying very hard to do the right thing and the residents of his home town would still like him to be the hero that he can no longer be. Apollo is written very well, and the twist ending is quite good. (The denouement does rather reduce the impact of the story, though.) 4 stars.

The Priestess and the Peril, Part 2 is an Ivan story and a continuation from the first Vignettes volume. Publishing the parts in different books hurts the flow of this significantly. If I had just read volume 1, I suspect I would have been more engaged, but it's been a couple of years since I read that, so it took me a long time to get involved. This is exacerbated by the story being set on a different world with characters (other than Ivan) entirely disconnected from the main series. And the way Ivan is presented makes him very unsympathetic (and he wasn't a warm and cuddly hero to begin with.) 2 stars.

Camp Meta is a superhero summer camp story. And like all summer camp stories in adventure fiction, things go very badly wrong. The star here is Ivan's son, who has recently come into his powers. I liked the setting and the supporting characters, and the story had promise, but the only real suspense was whether the MC could keep his full powers hidden, which reduced the impact. 3 stars.

Overall, this is a decent gap filler between Villain's Code novels, but it's not especially memorable.

Mostly great! but with some problems

This is a book of three short stories / novellas from the Villain's Code universe. All three are further stories about established characters I want to read more about.
Two of the three stories are so contrived to reach a preordained conclusion that it distracted me from the story.
Suspension of disbelief is a delicate thing sometimes. You can bend it into some shapes but not others. You can make your characters do anything, but the reader has to BELIEVE that's something the character would do. Having a smart character suddenly miss the obvious or have a normally cautious character abandon caution for no benefit... you need to make it feel natural, or you break the suspension. There were too many times in the book where I got ejected from the story to ask myself what Drew Hayes was thinking. I shouldn't be thinking that in the middle of a story, I should be inside the story.
Still, overall a pretty good book.

Not usually one for novellas, but I enjoyed the previous volumes so I knew I couldn’t go far wrong with this one.

We’re treated to an Apollo story first and he’s a character I both hate and hate how I come to if not like him understand him.

We get more content with pearle and the gang. I was surprised with this considering we’ve kind of seen Auro after Ivan’s time in their world. Very pleased through and strongly suspect we’ll get to enjoy more with a vol 3.

Lastly we get a Rick story which surprised me even more so than the last. Mainly In that i thought this would fall more into the main series after the events of the last book. Still it was a great conclusion to this vol and even had a small nod to superpowereds, which is always fun to see.

Overall very much enjoyed it, great job once again.

a trio of short stories.

Fun short stories that move the larger universe along.
Drew is in the top 5% of most talented authors in the Amazon lending library. His character all work in the story and do their job of inspiring a sense of humor and adventure.
His plots are interesting and fit a larger narrative and given enough time his characters often display surprising complexity for a superhero genre without being that depressing kind of hero.

All in all worth reading if you are up to speed on the series.

This is the second compilation of short stories from the Superpowereds universe. There are three stories in this one. Overall if you’re a huge fan of the Superpowereds this is a fun revisit. However, you could read this as your first foray into the series and still fully enjoy it. For the middle story at least the more you know about Thornax the more sense it makes, but the story is still good. In the end some short stories that deal with redemption, discovery, and what it takes to be a hero.

Good writing as usual, however I did feel that writing around Rick and Ivan was a bit too fantastical on the power scale. It was constantly re-iterated that Ivan could destroy everything with little effort, or that if Rick just unleashed his true form he'd easily take care of everything. It felt very overboard on the power scale for the actions we've seen Ivan take, and the limited experience Rick has even with his training.

a breath of fresh air

If you’re looking to get a morsel of the meta world this book is for you. While not having the hefty swings drew hayes is most known for in his larger than life series, what you do get is a fun dive with plenty of Easter eggs that leave you hungry for what’s to come in the villains code universe. Superb work as always and cannot cannot wait for the next book!

wooo!!!! what a universe!!

Definitely one of the more widely developed of the worlds of Drew Hayes, these vignettes once again show how much is lurking behind the scenes. And given that the regular main books are enormous, you’d think that there wouldn’t be much left to reveal. You’d be wrong. This was an excellent x.5 book and I can’t wait to see what comes next!!!!

Another Great Installment

Another great installment in the Villain's Code series! Too short again, although I suppose 300+ pages can't truly be considered short, I would have loved more of the middle tale, and both the bookends were great too! Always love when something new Drew comes out. It's almost spooky season, so I'll get back into the Halloween stories soon!

Apollo’s story was fine. I didn’t really need more with him but it was interesting
The Priestess storyline is my favorite and I cannot wait for the next installment!
Getting to see more of Rick and his learning to come to grips with who he is now was great. Looking forward to how he develops in future stories.

Overall, I enjoyed these stories! I think I liked these more than the first VV book because I enjoyed that they were actually about side characters more than "welp, here's more Tori." I adore Tori, obviously, but I really liked the focus on Apollo and Rick, especially! It was a lot of fun to see what they have been doing since the last book ended. :)

Fun Vignettes, Part 2

Three shorts in the world of the Villians’ Code. I enjoy these short stories, if for no other reason I don’t stay up until 0400 on a work night trying to finish the story! 😁

Another fantastic set of side stories

I was a little sad the main cast didn't make as much of a showing in this one, but the stories we did get were great. If you're following the series, don't sleep on this fantastic installment!

More stories in the VC universe

This collection provides more stories in the Villain's Code universe, expanding more widely and further developing characters that haven't had an opportunity to shine in the main series thus far. Well worth the read!

Great fun

Fans of Drew Hayes's previous Villain Code books will know what to expect: well written superheroes and villains, interesting training and use of powers, and people with strong morality facing situations that will test them. Looking forward to more!

Better than the first Vignettes book - minus the Halloween town story because that one was absolutely a blast. Relevant to the world while not opening it up too much, and decent paced.

Still not a fan of the Ivan plot in story 2, but the 1st and 3rd were worth the read.

This series is wonderful. All of Dew Hayes's work is. Character uniqueness and development is of the highest order. Storyline to die for.
And you never want it to end.

Yes, you should read this. I would recommend not starting with this volume, also, especially the first and last story do work as stand-alones. It's just -- the entire series is amazing, and I highly recommend you enjoy it all.
