A Thoroughly Recommended Debut Novel

The Awakening of the Light is exactly what small-to-medium indie publishing houses were created for.

This debut novel from Emma Lamb is superb in many ways. It’s an excellent, well told, fantasy story, which fits the bill for new wave publishing perfectly. These new-style publishers are now more plentiful than standard traditional companies and release more books onto the market each year. Books that are loved by readers and critics, but are still, inexplicably, shunned by old-school purists who chunter on about “the rules of writing.”

I always tell such snooty purists that their industry needs to move with the times. Rules are meant to be broken, as long as the finished product is still a good story that entertains the reader. And The Awakening of the Light succeeds on both those fronts in abundance.

Emma Lamb’s novel is the first in a planned series entitled A Tale of Two Forces, which, I believe, will stand proud in the annals of fantasy literature.

Telling, as it does, the tale of Victoria, who starts the book as just an ordinary teenager in the Kingdom of Beltophia but quickly takes centre stage in a forthcoming clash of good against evil - The Light versus The Darkness – the plot moves along at a perfectly constructed pace, through no-frills, tightly-worded, descriptive narrative, and engaging dialogue. It’s largely a coming-of-age story, with the added complication of swiftly emerging mystical powers alongside teenage angst, with a developing love interest.

The writing quickly matures from a passive voice in the early stages (a passive example being, Sat at a desk in her quarters was the Black Queen) to the much more effective active voice (example: Inside, Victoria heard the commotion and the attempts to get the doors open, but she held them shut with her mind as she tried to focus on getting to the throne room).

An aspect the purists would tut-tut over is the fact that we’re frequently told what’s happening rather than being shown, and there are several instances of exposition from multiple points of view in the same scene. But does this detract from the story? No. It doesn’t, which is why this debut novel retains my full clutch of five stars.

Thoroughly recommended.

Okay, I’m obsessed with "The Awakening of the Light"! Emma Lamb totally gets what makes epic fantasy so addictive. Victoria starts as this super relatable girl in Beltophia, just living her quiet life, when BAM—her world explodes with these crazy powers she didn’t even know she had. The story pulls you into this ancient vibe of Paradisia, where a thousand years ago the King and his brother, these epic Chosen Vessels, fought this insane battle between The Light and The Darkness. The way Lamb describes Victoria grappling with her new abilities while dark forces start creeping back with their creepy allies had me on edge. I was rooting for her so hard as she tries to figure out who she’s supposed to be in this massive, ancient fight. The world feels so alive, and Victoria’s mix of fear and courage is just chef’s kiss. I’m already dying for the next book to see how she faces the looming darkness!

This book was such a pleasant surprise. The Awakening of the Light has that classic chosen-one energy but with its own unique twist. The worldbuilding was rich without being overwhelming, and I loved the way the story tied past and present together through prophecy and legacy.

Victoria is a relatable main character, and watching her grow into her power felt authentic and empowering. There’s mystery, magic, and just enough emotional depth to keep me turning the pages. It definitely feels like the start of a bigger saga, and I’m excited to see where the story goes next.

Would definitely recommend to fantasy lovers who enjoy strong female leads, ancient magic, and epic worldbuilding!
