This book surprised me—in the best way. It’s not just a collection of stories, it’s a journey through chaos, connection, and quiet grace. Whether it’s the messy charm of coaching hockey without a rulebook, the deep tenderness in honoring parents, or the unexpected workplace bond with a colleague named Mars, each chapter carries genuine heart.

And then there’s the Springsteen moment—just 12 seconds at a book signing, yet somehow it holds a universe of feeling. As a member of the fandom myself, that scene alone made me pause. It felt like a mirror held up to what it means to belong, even briefly, to something larger.

This book made me laugh, reflect, and most of all, feel. It’s a reminder that life’s most meaningful stories don’t always come in grand gestures—they often arrive in small, beautifully told moments.

The Unqualified Hockey Coach by Craig Colby is a heartfelt read that had me both laughing and crying. Colby’s storytelling is genuine, warm, and filled with life lessons that reach far beyond the rink. It’s a must-read for anyone who loves hockey, family, or simply a great story. Congratulations, Craig!

Craig Colby is a master at writing about human connections; what it means to share your life with those around you in a meaningful way.
Nothing excites Craig more than meeting new people and expanding his world. The reason I can say this with such conviction is that I have known Craig my entire life. He’s my older brother.
What also excites Craig is writing about these connections.
Craig’s second book, “The Unqualified Hockey Coach and Stories of Springsteen, True Love and How To Be Utopian,” is a collection of seven short memoirs about events and people in his life that rewarded him and challenged him and the life lessons we can all take away from these experiences.
It is a theme in Craig’s life that follows on the success of his first book, “ALL CAPS: Stories That Justify An Outrageous Hat Collection.” That award-winning book on the surface is about Craig’s hat collection but it’s really about the compelling human stories behind each hat.
In the “Unqualified Hockey Coach,” Craig reveals his own vulnerability but also his strengths while writing about the people who have impacted him deeply, from his parents, to co-workers, to Bruce Springsteen (also a hero of mine), to the hockey players he’s coached, to a deep friendship he developed online through a fantasy baseball league that takes a tragic yet ultimately uplifting turn.
In an age where many of our connections are through social media, which can leave people feeling isolated and often bruised, “The Unqualified Hockey Coach” is an antidote to that superficiality. It contains deep and heart-felt stories that show why our relationships matter and how to cultivate them.
The timing of this book could not be better.

Deeply personal stories about love, loss, and (reluctantly) coaching hockey. The Unqualified Hockey Coach is a memoir about making a difference in the world -- by being present and thoughtful everyday. Really enjoyed this book!
