I really enjoyed the overall plot and story arc that this book took! I loved an fmc who embraced and jumped into this new world with the hot shadow daddy who swept her away. Lena is honestly such an iconic FMC for so many reasons, she's so smart and witty, pushy and brave, she was quick to adapt to her new world and find her place in it with such confidence. I also really enjoyed Kael's character.
I appreciated all the thought and planning that was clearly put into this world, while I found myself confused with the depth of the plot at times and felt that certain things could have maybe been explained better, this was definitely one of my more detailed reads when it comes to intricacy, etc.
I personally LOVED the epilogue, don't thing *that* ending for them was totally fitting giving the duration of their story, and how much more they both still had to accomplish, but I love seeing endings like this when both the mmc and fmc have fully healed enough for this type of ending :')
My only "qualm" with this book - and the reason it wasn't a 5 star read for me was
-> Lena and Kael going from 0 to 100 pretty quickly with not a lot of build up/yearning, etc. - i wish we could have seen more of Kael's inner monologue and his inner battle with his growing feelings for Lena, I feel like it went from "yeah I like being around her even tho I shouldn't" to "i love you let's be bonded forever"
-> the resolution of the story was REALLY compact, there was a huge build up of plot and struggle and SO many implications about the important and significance of everything then it was ultimately resolved pretty quickly in my opinion, with the ending chapter feeling a little cringey
-> the amount of times the word shadow and bond were used - felt like everything was a "shadow-this" or "bond-that", made it hard to keep track of things when they all had such similar names

Okay… this book felt like stepping into a fog-drenched forest at midnight mysterious, lyrical, and full of shadows that might be watching you 👀✨
From the first page, Bound by Shadow wraps you in this gothic, magical atmosphere. We meet Lena, a quiet librarian who’s grieving her grandmother but quickly discovers that Gran was hiding a whole other life (cue shadow magic, a pendant that pulses like a heartbeat, and secrets hidden in dusty journals). It gave me Discovery of Witches vibes with a touch of The Raven Cycle.
Then there’s Kael our tall, dark, ancient shadow-weaver who shows up to take the magical pendant from Lena… but obviously, things don’t go as planned 😏 Their dynamic is ALL about reluctant trust, slow-burn tension, and that delicious forced to rely on each other or die energy.
What I Loved:
💀 The dual POV Kael and Lena balance each other perfectly
🖤 The moody, immersive world (seriously, the vibes?? immaculate)
📖 Gran’s journals slowly revealing lore = yes, please
🔥 Slow burn romance with great tension (not too fast, but enough to keep you invested)
Minor things that tripped me up:
- The middle section dragged a little with lore dumps and training scenes. I craved more emotion or external conflict during that bit.
- Some of Kael’s emotional shifts could use a bit more breathing room. One more heart-to-heart would’ve sealed it.
- I wanted just slightly more clarity on the big stakes (what happens if the Shadow Seal fails?).
But honestly? I flew through this. The writing is beautiful, the vibes are lush and shadowy, and Lena is the kind of heroine who doesn’t need to scream to be powerful. This was a really strong start to what feels like it could be a fantastic fantasy series.
If you love slow-burn magic, found legacy stories, and morally grey warriors with silver eyes and complicated loyalties… you’re going to enjoy this one.
📚 Would 100% read the next book, especially if we get a Kael POV kiss scene, just saying.

-The plot was quite promising. At first. Unfortunately the book ended up falling flat for me. I just couldn’t really focus on the storyline and get invested like I would have hoped for. The execution of the idea wasn’t really that perfect. The plot itself had some intrigue. There were definitely some moments where things were looking up but as a whole, it just wasn’t for me. The writing style also felt a little juvenile sometimes where the author didn’t really know what perspective to write they just wrote both which wasn’t really necessary.
-I didn’t connect with the characters. I’d gone in hoping for a nice slow burn romance but it wasn’t really all that slow burn. Most of the book they’re attracted to each other and have already kissed multiple times all then to form a bond and fall in love with each other quite gars way form the end. But of course, their love is the solution to everything so it makes sense that they had to be in love way before the book ended. I just didn’t really vibe with it myself.
-Like I said before, love is kind of the thing that solves everything in this book which is sweet in a way but I don’t like those types of endings. I prefer tragic endings. Furthermore, it also dragged on in the aftermath of everything for too long. There multiple chapters after the story had technically ended with time jumps but that was even before the epilogue. And if you want me to sit and stare at wall because of the ending of the book, that’s not the way to about it.

The way I inhaled this book! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. All opinions are my own. I have been obsessed with everything Adeline Hartley has written. The way she weaves her stories is brilliant. In Bound by Shadows, the magical system is unique, but also familiar and has an edge that keeps you guessing. The MMC and FMC have immediate chemistry that jumps off the page, making the slow burn almost painful (in the best way) at times. They're driven and focused on their duties, which makes you root for both of them. The element of love (not a spoiler) adds a nice touch that makes the magic feel even more powerful. I cannot wait for the book 2.

I was hoping for a romantic fantasy with a gothic sort of flavour, and I'd say this was the flavour of book that I wanted. It was sufficiently spicy, and Lena and Kael had great chemistry, but I still felt the main focus was on the romance and connection, and I escaped into the world created here by this author.

This is a pleasant story of how the power of love can create a bond that can help save and unite two worlds.
Is a different type of fantasy, where the MMC falls first, where the MFC is a modern-day woman found in an impossible situation, but somehow manages to understand and overcome all obstacles. I liked the dynamics of the couple, the action of the story (even somehow repetitive on some parts), and the way the couple evolved through the story.
All in all, a nice book, I really enjoyed reading it!

I feel so privileged to read this advanced copy. Bound by Shadow hooked me from the start. Lena and Kael both captured me fully and I could not put this book down. The story progression and character growth was everything I could have hoped. I highlighted several quotes throughout the book that stuck out to me and I’m going to share a few spoiler free ones:
“Didn't spend all those years running from my problems for nothing."
“Love that demands you be smaller is not love at all.”
I can’t wait to read more works by Adeline Hartley. She has a talent with words and storytelling that has left me wanting more.

I received this book as an arc. I really enjoyed the beginning of this book. What bothered me where the parts left out. There are a few scenes where I wanted more. A few scenes I had to reread a few times to understand what had happened. I did finish this book but it was hard and that’s my honest answer. However, I really liked the fmc Lena. She is a quarry librarian and her character was chef kisses. The shadow daddy Kael is broody. Like really broody and I get it but his character development was lacking for me.

I tried so hard to finish this book, but really struggled to stay engaged with the story. DNF at 60%
There wasn't anything really wrong with it, other than getting halfway in and feeling like the plot was stuck and nothing was really moving. The writing itself was okay, and overall the editing was fine. I think the writing style and pacing just wasn't a good match for my brain.
I think it would be worth a read to see if you like it, even though it didn't work out for me.

Great new series! I enjoyed the interaction between the MMC and FMC, it was swoony but not over the top.

Bound by shadow brings to you a different world - the shadow realm.
I found this world fascinating but it left me wanting. What could have been a beautiful tapestry of shadows and light was woven very abruptly I think. It could have been more explicit in its description of the elements and what was happening in that world .
Nevertheless, it plot was riveting and help my attention through out. I just wished it was more fleshed out.
Looking forward to reading the second book in the series .

This book is heartwarming story of love, light, and balance. It gripped my heart and held steady throughout the book. Bravo! Adeline Hartley.

The concept was good but the execution was lacking, especially with the pace and believability of the romance. The world seemed well thought out but the details were often complicated and confusing. In the end it didn't really work for me, but that doesn't mean it won't for someone else.

DNF at 15% because it is basically unreadable for me due to the writing.
The premise is interesting but not enough for me to keep reading.
This is possibly the least thought put into storytelling I've ever seen.
Overall:
The scenes are barely stiched together by plot. No logic or cohesion in the characters, worldbuilding, or plot. No emotional beats, no narrative beats. The pacing just rushed through as fast as it could, no doubt to get to the spice asap, since I only got to page 46 and the MMC already thinks the FMC is special special.
Characters and worldbuilding needed more fleshing out; adding a baseline for Lena's normal life would have helped to contrast her 'new' life. Emotional and narrative beats didn’t have room to breathe or were not there at all. Ideas, phrases, information are repeated close to each other, with little change in phrasing and without added insight. Some imagery are unclear or downright confusing. I wasn’t able to finish the book because the above issues kept taking me out. Considering that I got to 15% and found an issue almost every other page, the book felt unreadable to me.
