Beautiful. This book about how marital abuse effects men is a long time coming. Winston watched as his controlling abusive father destroyed his mother, then his older sister is force to marry a controlling, abusive husband. When his sister finds out she is pregnant, she devises a plan prevent her husband from abusing her child. Winston witnesses his sister hurl herself off a cliff. Though Winston becomes a Duke, he is haunted with his inability to save his sister, and he becomes an avenger for women who suffer abuse. One night as he is escaping the runners after having meted out justice to a man who had beaten his wife he hired in a church confessional. A woman comes in to confess that she does not want to marry a man who has tortured her most of her life. Winston decides he must rescue her by making her his Dutchess. The important message of this book is how witnessing abuse effects men who are not abusive.
I enjoyed this well-written story. It is a protest against wife abuse but has a happy ending. Duke Winston was on a mission to protect women against cruel husbands. He refularly risked his reputation to deal with the men who he knew were hurting their wives. When he realised that Vanessa was being forced to marry the cruel Lord Langdon, he knew he had to save her. They married quickly but Lord Langdon was not happy. Will Winston be able to protect Vanessa from Lord Langdon? I like the way that Phoebe and Selina became friends with Vanessa and helped her to develop her role as a Duchess. An enjoyable read.
-A gripping tale of revenge, redemption, and unexpected love in the heart of the ton. I received a free copy and am voluntarily sharing my honest thoughts.
Winston, a brooding duke with a tragic past, becomes a secret savior of women. Vanessa, bright and brave, confesses her fears—and meets her future. Their opposite natures blend into a compelling romance filled with danger and healing.
I love how Winston is so protective and how Vanessa supports him.
Vanessa and Winston are thrown together in a whirlwind engagement, then marriage within days of knowing each other. The Duke has vowed to protect women who are undervalued and abused. Vanessa is on the cusp of an arranged marriage to a family friend who has always tormented and hurt her in secret until the dashing Duke happens upon her and changes her destiny. This is a great book with twists and turns to keep the story interesting. My only wish was that their wasn't a random spoiler in the prequel chapter.
A very different kind of story, Duke Winston swore vengeance on the low scums of the ton who abused their wives, his sister was forced into marriage by their father. He didn’t care that she wa# beaten by him. When she committed suicide by jumping off the cliff and into the sea, never found! And he married Vanessa to save her from Lord Langton, who has pulled cruel pranks on her for years. I guarantee this story is very different and enjoyed!
Duke Winston has his own agenda & It’s unheard of to keep ladies safe from their husbands or family. But one night he encounters his future wife to keep her safe. It’s his secret with a few trusted friends. But there’s one secret that keeps returning to haunt him. And the love of his wife.
This is one of my favorites written by Arabella Wells! I read it in one sitting (didn’t get much else accomplished that Saturday) and couldn’t stop until the epilogue was completed.
It amazes me that men who had such strong characterizations always had seemingly many insecurities in these romance books but perhaps with all their investments they were really like that. Anyway a really good read with a truly wonderful ending.
Many hidden things revealed. Addresses family dysfunctions, abuse, and it's effects. They save each other by the end. Highly recommended for all readers. Great ending.
I enjoyed the Story of Winston and Vanessa. The story of his sister added to the path of their story. I was disappointed that the prequel gave away highlights of the story.
Another great read from this author! The topic of spouse abuse and uncaring parents was intense but overall Vanessa and Winston's love story prevailed to it's fruition for a happy ending.
