Thank you to Bloomsbury Books for gifting me this copy. This book was not "it" for me, sadly; I was really excited for it, but it fell short. I struggled with how to rate this, but I’ve landed on a 2-2.5 stars.
Firstly, the one thing I really liked was the cover; it was beautiful and striking. I loved the lime green paired with the hot pink and the fact that it was embossed, making the front cover very intriguing. The writing was okay considering it is the author’s debut. This was my first book by this author, and I would potentially try another of their works in the future.
Now for the issues I had: I disliked how the blurb was "low-key" spoiler-esque. I read this book based on a recommendation, and I noticed the US blurb was a lot better than the UK version, as it didn't give as much away.
While we had several POVs, focusing mainly on the FMC, Annie, the timelines and perspectives were honestly a mess. Sometimes the author would leave a gap and use an asterisk to show a shift; other times, they would break it up with a new chapter or simply use a new line for a different speaker. Occasionally, the text would actually state the timeline and whose POV it was. This inconsistency created a lot of confusion and felt very sloppy; I’ve never been confused by timelines before, so I hope the author improves on this.
The writing is okay, but again, not the best—though I do give some grace as it is a debut. Personally, I can't recommend this book. I guessed every plot twist, so it felt very predictable. It also felt quite long and was hard to get into; nothing really happened plot-wise until the last 80 pages or so. Additionally, I found all the characters to be quite unlikable. The font is also a bit too small.
Ending on a good note, there were a few quotes I liked:
"With all the grace of a built-in wardrobe."
"Sometimes friends can heal in a way that a partner cannot."
"The truth stings for a little while; lies sting for a lifetime."
"It's the truth that isn't spoken that should concern us most."
"There is a desire within us for closure, but sometimes the unfinished is an ending in and of itself."
And the award for the most fooked up characters, goes to…… these guys were seriously nuts. Annie was seriously scary, but also hilarious, the thought process behind all her action were so clever, although I felt worried for everyone who she came across.
There is so much character development within this, in a way I wish it was longer to get to know them even more, but I also enjoyed that it was short and snappy which made it seem more intense.
For some reason the Pill box really got to me, as did ‘Rabbit’. If you are looking for an intense read with unlikeable characters, this is the one!
This book started off boring then quickly became ridiculous. You will have to suspend your belief to read this book, which verges into the realm of fantasy.
