راهنمای عملی اخلاق: چگونه درباب مسائل عملی اخلاق خلاقانه و نقادانه بیندیشیم

کتاب راهنمای عملی اخلاق فراخوانی است برای اخلاق و نویسنده آن قصد دارد رخنه‌ای را که میان مسائل نظری معمول در فلسفه اخلاق و مسائل عملی افراد مردد و تازه وارد در این عرصه وجود دارد پر کند. مسائلی نظیر این که اصلاً چه کسی نیازمند اخلاق است؟ اصلاً چرا باید درباره ارزش‌ها بیندیشیم؟ این‌ها پرسش‌هایی واقعی‌اند و پیش از پرداختن به باقی مباحث اخلاق لازم است به این پرسش‌ها پاسخ بگوییم.
مقصود دیگر این کتاب پیوند آفرینی است میان اخلاق و شیوه‌های کارآمد تفکر عملی به نحو عام. برای نمونه، مکتوبات پر شماری در باب حل خلاقانه مسأله وجود دارند که شامل مباحثی‌اند نظیر افزایش گزینه‌ها و صورت‌بندی مجدد مسأله به طریقی که شکل نخست را دگرگون سازد. نویسنده در این کتاب از شما می‌خواهد تا اخلاق را سیری همیشه در جریان بدانید. برماست که هم در عمل و هم به لحاظ درونی پذیرای پیچیدگی‌های زندگی واقعی و امکانات نهفته عالم باشیم. اندکی گشودگی بسیار کارساز است. پاره‌ای از چشمگیرترین پیشرفت‌های اخلاق دقیقاً از همین نقطه آغاز می‌شوند. مثلاً ایجاد آگاهی اخلاقیمان به دیگر جانداران را می‌توانیم یکی از راه‌های پیوسته در حال بسط برای اخلاق روزگارمان بدانیم.
پس این کتاب یک راهنمای عملی اخلاق است. بدین اعتبار که مکملی ضروری است برای تصحیح تصور اولیه و مرسوم از اخلاق و کتابی است برای کسی که در مسیر عمل اخلاقی گام می‌زند.

It’s been more than a year since I’ve limited myself to only rate and review the more serious non-fiction books only after the second read but in this case, I’m reviewing it now as I’m postponing the second read to a time when I will have read a book on theoretical ethics. This book is written in a way that makes it possible to be read even without any prior knowledge in the field but I feel knowing the basics of normative (theoretical ethics) would do good on better understanding and analyzing the applied ethics even if not a prerequisite to it.
Meanwhile I want to mention how helpful I found the points in last chapter regarding the tips on writing a paper on ethics.

This book is easy to read and easy to understand. That does not make it any less thought-provoking. A very good introduction to ethics for students.

The main thing I got out of this book is to be aware of, and avoid, polarizing views on an issue. Simplistic "pro" and "con" approaches lead to seemingly irresolvable conflict and usually do not reflect the full complexity of issues. A better approach is to search for common values, brainstorm for creative solutions, and find ways to address the underlying problem.

For example, instead of getting caught in the "pro-life"/"pro-choice" rhetoric, a national organization called "Search for Common Ground" has activists on both sides of the issue working "together for common goals such as reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies in the first place." (p.66) I am reminded of one of my favorite bumper stickers: "Against abortion? Promote birth control!"

The title says it all. This is not an introduction to ethics nor is it a summary of every ethical issue. What it is, is a reflection on the practical implications of ethics. It is written in a very accessible way.
