A really fast read and interesting subject matter. I would have liked to seen a little more character development and background but otherwise a good book. Looking forward to the next one.
Refreshingly different than most sifi/fantasy novels I have read recently. A few editing problems, but not enough to be distracting. Finally a book that kept me involved. Wow! Going to download Book 2 ASAP.
This is an interesting take on the debate between science and faith. The title comes from the Buddhist belief that it takes 49 days for the soul/spirit to leave the body after death. This matches exactly some eerie results from a study about LSD done by the CIA in the 1970s as part of Project MKULTRA.
A new hippie-type scientist gets approval to research the effects of LSD on dying patients--to help ease their fears. What he finds makes him experiment on himself to try to replicate the results. Then he kills himself.
His former boss reads the research after the hippie guy dies. He gets excited and decides to experiment on his deadbeat son. He dies.
Meanwhile, Adam, a former member of the armed services and the main character of the story, is trying to find his daughter who was abducted by her mother seven years ago. He finds her under unusual circumstances in Australia after a plane crash. From that point, they are running for their lives from--who else--the CIA.
The story is told from two completely different perspectives with both trying to figure out what is going on. Adam and his daughter end up in Viet Nam seeking out a mysterious shaman, while the CIA allows the doctor that experimented on his son to learn the secrets of its MKULTRA experiment in hopes he can use his medical skills as a neurologist to find the truth.
This book has it all: train and airplane crashes, LSD, the CIA, explosions and lots of death, father and child reunions and separations, a mysterious mystical shaman, medical research, magic numbers, alternate realities, mysteries of the brain, life, death, and maybe the end of the world. There is constant suspense as secrets are slowly revealed and the connection between Adam's daughter, the doctor's son, and the shaman is slowly revealed
This book brought back fond memories of "Lost" (the TV show). It's man of science/man of faith storyline is very relevant to this story, as are the mysterious numbers, the life and death battles, government experimentation, and the possible end of the world, among other things.
I loved the search for truth against seemingly insurmountable obstacles and all the information about the functioning of the brain. It was fascinating and compelling.
The action kept you interested while the characters were being developed. The concept of the story was not rote where the guy has to rescue the 'princess', then everyone lives happily ever after. I liked the substance of the plot. It was a subject I had never thought about and you kept me asking, what would come next. And your main characterters are very likable - well, the ones you wanted us to like. I will be reading the next book "50 Days"
Amazing, fast paced suspence/thriller with very interesting characters. The storyline keeps you hooked, and isn't stagnant like other novels in that category. I can go on and on about this book and all the different topics and themes, but that'd take some time. If you're on the fence about this one, just do it. You won't be disappointed, I'll give you a dollar if you are haha. Off to purchase the 2nd in the series. 5/5 highly recommend
A very enjoyable tale of science, spiritualism and deception
I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting much from this book and when I started reading the premise, the MKULTRA connection I was afraid it would be a tale of pure fantasy. There is some urban fantasy, but there is also some scientific rigor behind the story. A hint that what some call “supernatural” is just nature we haven’t discovered yet.
Very enjoyable read that I finished in two sittings. The book could use a little more editing because some of the spelling was off as well as some of the syntax but it didn’t really take away from the enjoyment. Very original concept tho and I look forward to reading the next installment
49 Days is truly one of the best books of it’s genre I’ve read in a long time.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading 49 Days and highly recommend it to anyone who truly loves reading high octane adventure and edge of your seat action packed novels. It’s a combination sci-fi and military action masterpiece well worth the reading

Unbelievable! It took a brilliant mind to write this book. Mind blowing! I will be thinking about this book for a while to come. I plan to recommend this book to family and friends. Thanks. Belinda Young. Mississippi
Enjoyed premise and pace of book. But felt ending was rushed to get it completed. Felt story line of Patient F , Cameron, and Hayburner was incomplete and left me hanging.
If you are sci-fi fan, as I am, you will love this book. I did. It keep me wanting to read what was next and when I could no longer resist I started reading again for hours.
This was one of the most engaging stories that is character driven. Really enjoyed the pacing and it is thought Provoking it was a little unclear on exactly the true nature of what occurred at the end but that is what makes it thought provoking
Researchers are just beginning to tap into DMT's potential. The author has given us his exciting interpretation of the myriad possibilities of this amazing substance that is naturally found in plants and animals....including humans!
This is a well-written, action packed novel with a unique (to me) premise. I enjoyed it very much and highly recommend it to anyone that likes a good thriller.
The storyline is very interesting a d kept me interested. It is also scary thinking how so called scientists could do such inhumane treatment s to people.
Read the book if you like a fast pace and a thriller. It will take you around the world and back. I enjoyed the theorizing regarding the working of the brain as well. It was all quite interesting. I look forward to the next book in this series.
