Black Cat #23

The Bride

Rate this book
Salem is chock-full of people in a wild range of costumes. But when Kathy spots five bridesmaids, a maid of honor, and a woman in a long, ivory dress, she knows something special is going on.

The Bride is the twenty-third entry in the Salem Massachusetts Mini Mystery series. The start of this series is The Lucky Cat. These short stories are being written and loaded one a day from October 1 through October 31, 2014. All author's proceeds from this series benefit battered women's shelters.

Lisa has lived in scenic Massachusetts since 1986, with only two brief forays out of state. One of Lisa’s ancestors was Ann Foster, who died during the Salem Witch Trials. Ann Foster was a grandmother by that time and sacrificed herself to protect her daughter and granddaughter. Ann had been born in England, came over in 1635, and was 75 by the time of the trials. Salem reached its dark depths during those trials from 1692-1693 - but since then has healed, blossomed, and shines. It now features the amazing Peabody Essex Museum, a plethora of gorgeous historic architecture, and a beautiful coastline. It's well worth a visit. If you can't go in person, take a virtual trip through Lisa's first-hand descriptions!

Overall, I enjoyed the story and the characters but the resolution disappointed me. Someone isn't transferred to a different country in 1/2 an hour. That part was so unrealistic that it through me out of the story.

Now you see it, now you don't.

Another one that fell a bit short. She and Lenny are out and run across Zoe but doubled. Apparently her cousin (dressed as a bride) never had the whole works for her wedding as the groom said that the wedding in Vegas was all they need. But on the eve of her divorce, she's celebrating by having herself dressed as a bride and her closest friends dressed as bridesmaids. A short time later Zoe comes back and says that there is an item missing from her apartment. It is a little box. One of 16 that the husband had given his wife and that she wanted to burn as a symbol of release. As the three investigate, she wonders what could be so special about the box. They are all empty. Is it like Lenny suggested a token that the husband's new lover had taken. Will they find out?

Over delicious sandwiches at the café, Lenny confesses to Kathy that he actually did know Zoe and George from before.

It’s a beautiful afternoon as they enjoy their lunch al fresco. The couple spot a wedding party—five bridesmaids in tangerine dresses, and a bride wearing ivory.

Turns out, Ginny is Zoe’s cousin. She and the girls are all celebrating her newly-minted divorce.

Later that evening, as Kathy and Lenny hang out at his pub, Kathy receives a telephone call. It’s Zoe. And something’s come up missing.

It’s one of the beechwood boxes (from ex-husband…Walter Beech).

So who would wanna steal Walter’s old box, anyway??

Fortunately the young blonde man getting blue tips on his spiked mohawk saw something…

Everyone still thinks Kathy is psychic. 😂

Well solved, and keeps the peace. The promise of more with Lenny…
