HELLFIRE AND HONEY had a lot of potential and while I really liked the fantasy side of the novel, the romance never really got there for me. On a positive note, I loved Sal and her "voice" as the narrator was really nice to read. Sal might have been a queen but she was also a warrior and she could kick some serious butt. She's also willing to do anything for her people and her compassion knew no bounds.
The world building and plot were all interesting and kept me intrigued. In the beginning there was great tension between Sal and Kadence as enemies who are now forced to work together. But then Kadence was just too hot and cold and his constant jerkish behavior with Sal got really frustrating. He never expressed any real emotions toward Sal until almost 80% and then it all felt so sudden. I think the lack of Kadence's POV really hurt the romance in HELLFIRE AND HONEY because we don't see Kadence's feelings change from anger to love.
Additionally, Kadence is supposed to be the vampire king but we never really see him doing anything king-like. He just lurks around brooding and looking intimidating and it's Sal who seems to be ruling the kingdom, both her own people and Kadence's people. While the romance didn't really work out for me the rest of the book certainly held my attention and I think a lot of readers would enjoy this one.

I lashed out. Rage and fear and frustration fueled my strike. I slipped close, and danced away, barely avoiding the edge of his blade.
"You missed," he said.
"Did I?" I held up a single black button. The front of his shirt gaped open. He ran a finger across his unbroken skin. When he looked up, a fire burned in his gaze, and it was more than eagerness for a fight.
"There are easier ways to take my clothes off, Sal."
Centuries of war come to a bitter end when princess Sal’s parents steal half the witch army and disappear Sal is forced to surrender to the vampire king Kadence and bind her magic as part of their agreement she will give anything to protect her people anything except her heart when Kadence conquers the witch kingdom he doesn’t except their princess to be as delicious as wild honey he can’t decide if he’d rather kiss or kill Sal and his desire for her battles against his hatred of witches despite their attraction Kadence can’t forget their war torn history he must decide if he can overcome his past to make way for a new future one that might include Sal but when scouts locate Sal’s parents and discover they’re marching a demon army toward the kingdom Sal and Kadence must unite their people for a final battle Really enjoyable read can’t wait for the next book totally recommend.

FONCEZ !
This is a slow-burn, enemies to lovers romance wrapped in a fantasy world where vampires and witches are at war.
The story tugged at my heart strings like a musician does with a beautifully tuned and melodious harp. Much like Princess Salvatore's magic, which carefully and mindfully weaves its way around people in peace and in war.
The story is told from the POV of the MC, Princess Salvatore (Sal), ruler of a kingdom of witches. I loved her instantly. Right from the start, her perspective and inner dialogue present her as a mature adult who has been forced to quickly grow into her role of soon-to-be Queen as a result of her parents' abandonment of the kingdom.
Her enemy is Prince Kadence, the leader of a kingdom of vampires. Their first introduction is when Sal surrenders her kingdom to him, to save her people. That wonderful introduction was the hook that drew me into the story, and I couldn't put it down.
I gave this novel 4 stars for its strong heroine, the fantastic and unique take on both vampire and witch cultures, the wonderful way in which the magic is described, those riveting moments of growing chemistry between Sal and Kadence, and a twist that I DID NOT SEE COMING! For that, the author deserves a huge round of applause.
I found that the pace of the romance was determined by Kadence's character. I struggled with frustration as I read the hot and cold nature of his personality, which created a constant push and pull between him and Sal.
But, about half-way through the novel, it clicked that he makes sense when you see him right from the start as a Royal that has held the weight and sole responsibility of ruling a kingdom at war, since he was orphaned as a child. One minute he's filled with rage and anger, and the next he's a vulnerable and confused adult. He is forced to grow emotionally through his relationship with Sal.
Payton expertly wrote Sal as the anchor that holds relationships and kingdoms steady and strong. Supporting characters are colorful and vivid in personality, and create a wonderful ensemble to support Sal's role as a fierce, fair, and loyal leader.
Hellfire and Honey is the first in the Eternal Alliances series. With a HEA ending, I don't know if the next book will pick up where this one left off. But, it would be wonderful to be introduced to new characters and new adventures.
Whatever paths this series takes, I'm eager to read more!

This isn’t very spicy, but it’s steamy and an interesting plot line(not a book for young ya audience though). Essentially there’s a 200 year old battle between witches and vampires, and the witches decide to surrender but soon after find out that there’s a greater threat and have to figure out how to work together and get along.
Also the demons in this book will give me nightmares.
It was funny to see the hate to love you attitude change, and watch the male MC(main character) attitude change and soften. I wasn’t a fan of the bracelet that blocked the MC powers though (Dw it’s not a “female loosing all her powers for a happily ever after “ trope, and she’s really badass).
The politics in this book were also interesting though not a super big part of the book. It was cool to see the politics and the populations opinion evolve and adjust after the witches surrender to vampires.
Anyways, I would recommend this to older ya readers. It’s a really cool fantasy book with an interesting world and rules. If you're a romance reader, you will at least get crumbs (if not more ;) ) pretty often. The action was really well described. The author did their research and I ate that up more than I thought I would.
This was a cute fantasy stand alone. Sal and Kadence are 2 rulers who are learning to rule together for the sake of their people after Kadence defeated Princess Sal’s kingdom after a long war. Despite their rocky beginnings, their romance was cute and the tension was insane. The amount of times things started to get spicy but then they got interrupted had me screaming. They were really edging us throughout this whole book.
Everything about this book was decent. The plot was alright, nothing too special. Everything was predictable. The world building could’ve been better. I was a little confused because I though this was a fantasy world but then they described a character to have Asian descent, so now idk if this book took place in the real world or in a fantasy world. The romance was also alright, nothing too special.
Sal, notre héroïne, m’a énormément plu.
I really loved this novel! It’s been since I read From Blood and Ash that I’ve found a good vampire series that I’ve actually enjoyed!
Hellfire and Honey drops us straight in the middle of a war… witches vs vampires, to the death. That is until the princess of the witches parents abandon her and leave her with no choice but to do what’s right for her people. And what’s right for her people is surrender, surrender to the vampires, and the ruthless vampire king. Salvatore and Kadence couldn’t be more different from each other if they tried. Sal tries to lead her people through compassion and understand, while making sure her opinions and decisions are final. Kadence rules through intimidation and fear, with no backwards thought about how his people may feel about his rule. At least that’s what they chose believe about each other… but as their tentative peace is threatened and war once again looms on the horizon, perhaps they’ll learn their not so different after all.
This book hit all the right points for me! I loved Sal, even in her surrender she never becomes a simpering little girl. She holds her head high and makes decisions that benefit not only her people but her new vampiric people as well, even though not only do the vampires hate her, but most of her own people wish her dead as well. She stands tall in the face of humiliation as Kadence is cruel and at some points down right nasty to her. And when people needed her she was there for them even if they had done nothing but be cruel to her previously.
Kadence himself was a bit of a handful at first, he’s cruel and a bit to cocky for his own good. He rules with an iron fist and has no qualms about rubbing it in the faces of the witches that due to the surrender they’ve basically lost the war to those they despise the most. He almost seems to take pleasure in his cruelty, but then we start to see a softer side of him. A side of him that seems to care for his people, the witches, and even for Sal. A part of him that he has been forced to keep locked away so that he could rule a kingdom of vampires.
Overall, this was an amazing slow-burn vampire fantasy romance that really packs a punch. It gives readers everything they could ask for in a book, political intrigue, royalty, betrayal, vampires, witches, demons, war and let’s not forget the forever loved enemies-to-lovers romance. I’d say if you’re looking for another beautifully written book, to tickle all of your fantasy needs, then this is the book for you.

Princess Sal will do anything for her people. Even if it means surrendering to their hated enemies, the vampires, to save them from slaughter in a war they will lose. Now she has to find a way to work with the vampire king, Kadence, to unite their two kingdoms and allow their people to have peaceful future. It won’t be easy. Her people aren’t exactly behind her and the hatred between the witches and vampires is deep. But when a bigger threat shows up that cares nothing if you are a witch or a vampire, Kadence, Sal and their people must unite to make a final stand or all her previous sacrifices will be for nothing.
I admire Princess Sal. She has a thankless job. She doesn’t have a lot of support from her people and yet she is willing to sacrifice herself if that will save them. She’s just lucky Kadence doesn’t want her death, at least not immediately. Then she is the one who has to live the life as puppet monarch in an effort to create a united kingdom. That is humiliating and a lot of the time it seems like she is the only one making the effort to make this peace work. Kadence is caught up in his hatred of witches—she has plenty for vampires but at least she is willing to force it aside for her people’s sake—and doesn’t try very hard to smooth the way. In fact, in many ways he hinders it. Even if he is attracted to her.
Sal, though, is not just a sacrificial lamb. She isn’t just sitting on her throne moaning about her terrible position. She does what she can and when it comes time to fight, she is up for it. She delivers.
Overall, a decent story with action, some romance and some decent magic.

Hellfire and Honey has it all; Vampires, Witches, Wars, Battles, Romance. You name it, it's got it.
It is fantastically written, keeping the reader on the edge of their seat with the need to devour the story told. Safe to say I actually loved this novel, it was unexpected and when I first started reading I did think that I was going to be getting a sappy "fall for the vampire" type story but No! It was way beyond that! I got a full on kick ass adventure with more twists than a country road!
I loved Sal, she was fiesty, fierce and a strong female lead. Kadence was very much the brooding vampire at times and frustrating at times. Though I did like the relationship between them both and towards the end Kadence developed more. I loved all the ways the vampires and witches intwined with each other and the end results - who would have saw that coming!
With the actual ending I did think it was a little predictable, but it didn't take away from the story, It felt like a nice wrap up on that book. Which hopefully will lead book 2 onto greater things. I highly expect it - so I am looking forward to that.
Sal, Queen of the witches, makes a deal with a 200 year old enemy to her people for peace. Kadence, King of the vampires is willing to make peace but only if it's clear his is the side that won. With a threat on the horizon that's larger than both of them can they find true peace? And maybe something more?
I am always a fan of vampires and adding what felt like true Enemies to Lovers really helped make the story shine for me. I enjoyed Sal and her point of view, she felt genuine and her building desire for the vampire king never felt forced. I liked the back and forth they had, the concessions she makes for her people and how tough it seems to be for her to sit on the throne of a populace that largely does not seem to like her.
The ending fight seemed a tad rushed. I am not sure if it could have been made into another book but there was just something that left me wanting for more of that fight. It felt over and done with too quick.
Overall though it was a good fantasy story that explained as it went, had an interesting relationship between the main characters and I really enjoyed the side characters and their personalities.
After Princess Sal’s parents disappear with half the army, she’s left to run a kingdom at war on her own. She cedes the war to Kadence, the new King to her Queen. Despite their dislike of each other due to the centuries-long war between their kingdoms, things begin to get complicated as they have to work together to run the new, large kingdom.
Witch Sal proves a strong, yet vulnerable FMC. Her selflessness to run a kingdom and put her people first, despite their lack of confidence in her abilities, is a testament to this. Vampire Kadence is standoffish and at times, prone to mood swings, as he grapples with overcoming a traumatic past.
I literally couldn’t put this book down. There’s some great steam in this story, and the tension was *chef’s kiss*. I found myself drawn into the story and feeling deeply for Sal and Kadence.
I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for a gripping fantasy romance featuring witches and vampires.
Special thanks to City Owl Press for the ARC. All thoughts in this review are honest and my own.
Y’all. This book was absolutely insane in the best way possible. The rollercoaster of emotions I felt throughout this entire book (which can be read as a stand-alone) we’re indescribable. One minute I was frustrated as hell with one of the characters, and the next I was silently pleading the author not to hurt them. AN Payton made me fall in love with King Kadence and Princess Sal — when you put together a rumored ruthless scary vampire king, and a despised princess who’s kingdom was falling, naturally you can see the tropes that can be formed. This novel was action packed, and 100% reminded me of From Blood & Ash, and naturally A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire. If you’re a fan of Jennifer Armentrout and those two series, you are absolutely going to love this slow burn, enemies to lovers, action and thrilling packed book.

Hellfire and Honey is the first book in Eternal Alliances, a new romantic fantasy series filled with witches and vampires. This book was the ultimate cozy read with just the right amount of action and adventure to keep me on the edge of my seat.
The author did a fantastic job creating this magical realm for her characters and their story. I couldn’t stop turning the pages - constantly wondering what was going to happen next.
The slow-burn/enemies to lovers romance between Sal who is a fierce female witch and Kadence the powerful vampire king was definitively one of my favorite things about this book and I think the author wrote their relationship perfectly.
I thought this book was such an exciting read and it is filled with everything that makes a great fantasy book. If you’re looking for a cozy romantic fantasy to curl up with a knitted blanket and a hot drink and read through the night then I definitively recommend Hellfire and Honey - you will not be disappointed with this gorgeous book.
Doom your entire kingdom? Or surrender to the vampire king?
I love reading enemies to lovers books, and this story is one of my top favorites I have read in a while. I really enjoyed the vivid descriptions the author painted throughout the book. The romance developed incredibly well, especially considering the complicated, tangled past the hero and heroine had with one another. And the stakes kept piling up more and more, pulling me into the story with each page.
Kadence's push and pull within the budding romance really made sense for the story. I know others might not agree with it, but in my opinion, it was well done. His was a fragile heart surrounded by bars of steel, and I really liked watching how Sal dislodged one bar at a time.
This book had great romance scenes, incredible action, amazing characters, and vivid details. Definitely worth the read!

This story is so beautifully crafted and compelling. The characters are complex and relatable and I found myself deeply engaged in their growth. The main characters both wrestle with grief and trust and abandonment, but the way they grow, both independently and together, is so sweet to read. I also want to give props to Payton because writing action scenes and keeping them well-paced and engaging is extremely difficult. They did an all-around incredible job with this story and I can't wait to see where they take it next!
I really enjoyed this book. I had a hard time putting it down and being a responsible adult. Especially during the last 3rd of the book. This book is sneaky like an assassin. it starts out fairly normal, enough to pique your interest but not overwhelm you. then BAM! next thing you know you have built ships and are too invested to put it down. you feel the things the characters feel. you want to be out there on the battlefield watching their back. The author did a really good job of balancing action with conversation. I loved the concept of witches and vampires, and the way the magic system worked was captivating.
I liked quite a bit of this book but some points let it down a bit. I liked the chemistry between the leads and I thought that they had an interesting backstory. However, I did not think the progression of their relationship was 100% believable, it went from hate to lust real quick and everyone forgave each other so easily. It was strange since both sides did awful things to each other before they came to a mutual agreement. Nonetheless, I liked the characters and thought it was a fun read though lacking some emotional depth.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
While this book took me a while to get into it, I rather enjoyed it in the end. Sal and Kadencee were great characters and I loved the tension between them. Supporting characters Xavier and Rayhan we're fantastic too.
While I am always down for witch and vampire romance, and no stranger to sweeping fantasy world's, the world building wasn't as fleshed out as I would have liked for a more solid foundation of a world embroiled in a 200 year war. The plot (including the big twist) was predictable.
This was an overall good book I enjoyed reading despite my slow start. Once I got into the story I looked forward to reading more to watch the relationship burn between Kadence and Sal.
I enjoyed this story and the kick-a$$ heroine, but I had trouble relating to Kadence (the male lead). He was just too moody and hot-and-cold, so it made it hard for me to relate to him. I think if some of the story had been told from his POV, it would have helped with that. Still, it's an engaging enemies-to-allies-to-lovers romance, and I am interested to see what's next in the series. (Oh, and I love the cover!).

I really enjoyed this book! I was quickly drawn into the story, wanting to know more about the characters and their history. I appreciate the unique take on the witches and vampires instead of the traditional take. I was quickly invested in their world and the lives of several of the characters.
I loved the sassy humor of Sal! Her witty comebacks made me laugh and made her feel relatable.
I can’t wait to read more from this author!.

This was a really interesting story with it starting off at the end of a war battle between the vampires and the witches. Princess Sal who was left in charge of ruling the witch kingdom after her parents (the King and Queen) left her one day without any explanation.
After a centuries long battle she chooses to surrender to the vampire king Kadence knowing it was a losing battle. They make an agreement and she binds her magic until he can trust her. They learn to work together and rule the kingdom as a united front even if they don't see eye to eye behind closed doors. Kadence learns the ins and outs of Sal's kingdom and the vampires seem to fit right in even though everyone was hesitant at first.
There is a greater evil and they all come together to conquer it and along the way Kadence and Sal grow together. This is a slow-burn enemies to lovers story written well and I'm excited to see how the next book plays out.
First in a new fantasy romance series, it is a fast-paced, engaging story spiced up with a heart-warming romance between a witch and a vampire. Some royal intrigue and politics intertwine with a well-constructed wordbuilding. I only complaim about the narrative, I would like more if the author wroted in dual POV. But in all, I recommend to all fantasy romance readers who are looking for a well-crafted plot and an unusual setting. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I absolutely loved this book. I don’t typically read vampire or witch romantasy and I was a little nervous, but it sucked me right in! Sals personality is so sassy and sarcastic that I identified with her immediately. Kadence was the perfect brooding and mysterious vampire that you couldn’t help but love. And their romance was so swoony! The battle scenes and fight scenes were so well written that I felt like I was watching them. I love a good fight scene so I was thrilled! I can’t wait to read the next book!!!
