Meanwhile, Llywelyn lays on his deathbed from a traitor's arrow. And once again, it is David and Anna, and all they represent, that holds the key to the survival of Wales."Sarah Woodbury is my new favorite author. Daughter of Time reminds me of Outlander and 1632, with a fresh twist. I read all the books in the After Cilmeri series in four days! Long after I finished the last book, the stories and characters stayed in my mind, and I kept wishing I could return the world Sarah so skillfully created. I can't wait for the next book and the next ..." -- Debra Holland, New York Times bestselling author of the Montana Sky Series.
With over a million books sold to date, Sarah Woodbury is the author of more than forty novels, all set in medieval Wales. Although an anthropologist by training, and then a full-time homeschooling mom for twenty years, she began writing fiction when the stories in her head overflowed and demanded that she let them out. While her ancestry is Welsh, she only visited Wales for the first time at university. She has been in love with the country, language, and people ever since. She even convinced her husband to give all four of their children Welsh names.
Sarah is a member of the Historical Authors Fiction Cooperative (HFAC), the Historical Novel Society, and Novelists, Inc. (NINC).
Sarah Woodbury writes some of the finest historical fiction novels I've ever read, with an entertaining time/dimension travel twist that adds interest and perspective. This boxset is very good value, offering the excellent prequel together with the first two books in the series. However, I felt that the novella, Winds of Time, added no new content whatever to the story, since this had been adequately covered in book one (Footsteps in Time).
Ms. Woodbury's research is second to none in the historical fiction field, the quality of her writing style is exceptional, and she creates a variety of characters, both modern and historical, that the reader not only cares about, but at times agonises over. She also creates space for some common people, unlike many historical dramas which are exclusively populated by lords and ladies. Her pace is generally brisk, her plots substantial and, while historically grounded, necessarily have twists which transform history as we have known it. Also very well done are the everpresent action and warfare sequences, whether it's an arrow from the dark or massed armies and castle sieges.
The presentation of the prequel, book one, and the novella, was perfect, but I noted a few (rare) proofing flaws in book two. The interplay between our modern world and 13th century Wales is very well done, and while I initially had some reservations about this concept, Ms. Woodbury has won me over completely. Also, while the author has taken care to give some attention to these matters, I do think that she has chosen to allow her modern characters too easily to accept life in mediaeval Wales, particularly in choosing life without modern hygiene, medical, or dental services. On the other hand her attention to the role of women, both noble and common, and to their particular hazards, such as childbirth, is very well done. Very highly recommended.
Not sure whether to call this fantasy or SF. People from this century somehow (no idea how) end up in medieval Wales. It is worth reading, but some things are impossible for me to believe. The worst one is that after two years of being left in the woods in Wales, a minivan would still start. Maybe squirrels won't gnaw any wires, but that battery can't last that long in a cold damp climate.
In the tradition of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander books, this story of time travel and adventure set in Wales was an enjoyable read. Did not have the depth I hoped for but still worth reading the entire series - I've read through book 10.
If you really like a book that has every opportunity to get interesting but none of the heartbreak of actual drama.... this one is for you. It's 100% action, resolution without many consequences to tug on the feels-levers. Watch out, the only major character death is equine in nature.
On the surface, I found it to be a pretty bland book series without a lot of investment (but with a commitment to read what I downloaded) until the final book of the series where it really got interesting. There were at least 5 opportunities for true heart-wrenching, but in all cases, the worst-case was never realized.
Unlike other series, I'm not racing to find the fanfiction, but I wouldn't recommend against it, especially if you prefer a stable and "happy" outcome.
I thoroughly enjoyed this boxed set. It takes place in early, early Wales where life styles are primitive, even among the Royals and Nobility. Imagine the adjustments for those of modern day American civilization. Imagine the complications of relationships between the people of both backgrounds. An interesting story about interesting times and involving interesting people - love the characters!
I have read all 16 books and enjoyed all of them. This author is very good and will make you wonder what's next with David and his family. There may have been 1 book that I seemed lost in, but I gave the next book a try and boy was I glad I did. They just kept getting better. I so look forward to more.
As a history lover, this book has introduced me to the world of Ancient Welsh and I loved it. Not only is the writing very good, but the descriptions took me to a time and place I would not be able to imagine otherwise. The story is a wonderful love story. I just purchased the rest of the series so I can continue the tale. Great book.
Love the stories cannot wait to read the remaining stories. Time travel has been done as it should be done. Love idea travel to another era can be done and easily accomplished.
I got through 87% of the whole thing. I had less than an hour to finish it and I couldn't. Because it reached a point where I can take this book anymore. Where a character is trying to seduce a guard in order to save friends, and the guard says baby. Baby. I'm done.
I've fallen in love with this series and its author. She does a good job mixing fictional characters with historical figures, and brings medieval Wales and its last days of independence from England to life.
Well in truly got my .99c worth out of this box set. I'm hooked! Great story line and characters that you grow to love, plus plenty of plot twists. I find it difficult to put down.
An interesting twist on time travel and parallel dimensions, set in medieval Wales. I couldn't stop reading; I am definitely reading the rest of the series.
This is a review and rating for the #1 in series - Daughter of Time. I couldn't find a listing for the single book and so had to choose the box set. I've only read one thus far, but plan to buy the second in the series. I really liked this book, but did think it ended before some of the loose ends were tied up - thus the need to read the second book. Otherwise, I liked the characters very much. Meg and Llywelyn, the main characters, were both very likeable and I liked the way they expressed themselves and accepted the situation they were in. This is, of course, a time travel book - in some ways along the lines of Outlander, but not nearly as violent and sexually explicit. This is a sweeter romance that shuts the bedroom door after the first kiss. It does remind us of how very unsettled those times were, with fighting, intrigue, and power plays around nearly every corner. I think the author did a good job balancing all of the elements of the story and making it a lovely romantic adventure. Let me add since I wrote the above review, I have also read the "Footsteps" and Prince" books in the series. I have to say, I was sucked in by these characters and what they were going through. I enjoyed those next books as well. I did decide I needed to stop though -- I think there are about 19 books or so in that series. The author was adding new characters and kind of using the early characters less, so after three books - which I very much enjoyed -- I decided to call it quits. I do recommend those three though. Very nice!
The blurb attracted me, the idea of time travel entranced me but the execution distressed me. I gave up after 2 of the 4 books on offer because I was bored. It took me a while to understand why but I realised that it was because the good guys were so good with no faults and the bad guys were so bad with no redeeming features. They were cardboard cutouts that provided no inspiration or enjoyment. Boring! Boring!
Such a good concept ruined by such a prosaic approach.
Seems I am one of the few who didn’t like the series.
I like the idea but it’s just too far fetched and too many modern things in the story.
All the people in Wales just accept the odd things that happen, the complete lack of time period behavior and modern things that help the war.
And I didn’t not listen to more than a chapter of the novella because I just didn’t care enough to hear about the mom’s plane trip and subsequent journey.
It’s just not a story for me; I really never felt connected with any of the characters and the stories just fell flat.
The entire series is so much fun to become immersed in, it’s hard to stop reading. The author may not have every historical detail right according to experts, but it’s accurate enough for most readers, I believe. Take an extended trip to thirteenth century Wales and dive into the After Cilmeri series!
Sarah Woodbury takes us back to medieval times with hunky gorgeous Welsh knights and empowered women. Toss in some time travel, family, lots of treason, gunpowder and modern antibiotics! Thank you Sarah for this series! I'm off to the next book in this series! #PickThisBook #ReadThisSeries
Daughter of Time is Meg going to the past and falling in love with a Prince and back to the future to have his son. Footsteps in time is the Prince’s son and his sister going to the past. The Winds of Time Meg returns. Fighting with England with the Prince of Wales is amazing.
Ridiculous garbage. Harlequin Romance wrapped in Welsh history, makes no sense whatsoever, and the writing is poor. I mistakenly downloaded it because my book club had chosen another book by the same title by Josephine Tey (why do they give these books the same title??) and was considering quitting the book club, this was so bad.
Epic tale of Wales and the conflicts with England. The interesting ability of time manipulation by the author gives the characters the ability to make some choices not usually available to time travelers. I enjoyed this series and found it hard to put down.
I loved the Climeri series and this continuation was so satisfying! The characters are fantastic and the world building is great. The narrator was awesome, using different voices for the characters, and made it easy to keep everyone straight.
It could have been good. The history was compelling but the author just tagged on the romance part without giving it any real attention. It could have been so much better. The time travel, well, there was no attempt to make that even a little bit believable, as much as time travel could be. It was actually uncomfortably bad as far as that goes. This really could have been a great story had the author just tried to develop the characters and their relationships a bit. I was disappointed over all.
Fantasy stories about going back in time to Wales. Since I now live in Wales it intrigued me to find out about that time in history. I thoroughly enjoyed the boxed set. All the emotions you could possibly have was all rolled into these stories. They were wonderful.
