Just Clear Your Mind

Rate this book
What if your biggest challenge wasn’t the world outside, but the constant noise inside your own head?

Joe has always lived with too many voices in his mind. Some critical, some comforting, all relentless. From awkward childhood milestones to grown-up therapy sessions and first dates that feel like mental obstacle courses, Joe is not just navigating life. He is surviving it. With undiagnosed ADHD and a brain that refuses to slow down, every moment becomes a negotiation between reality and the invisible chaos within.

Just Clear Your Mind is a darkly funny, emotionally resonant story about what it means to live with a mind that will not cooperate. Told with sharp wit and deep vulnerability, Joe’s journey offers a raw, honest look at mental noise, self-doubt, and the quiet courage it takes to keep going.

This is not a story of a grand breakthrough or a perfect recovery. It is the story of one man learning, day by day, how to stay afloat in a world that rewards focus. When his own mind is pulling him in every direction.

Are you ready to hear the thoughts no one dares say out loud?

Just Clear Your Mind will make you laugh, ache, and see neurodivergence in a whole new light. Get your copy today and journey into Joe’s world—and maybe, just maybe, you’ll find echoes of your own.

"It's just that sometimes I get lost in my thoughts, and when that happens, I disconnect from the world." This one really captures Joe, the heart of the story Just Clear Your Mind by Blue Matt Jeff.
For me, the book was okay, in a good way. I love the writing style, it is simple, quite literary and easy for me to understand. Sometimes, Joe made me feel like I was him for a moment, and I think it was good. I can feel his character while reading. I can feel his chaos, his inability to focus on a specific tasks, his loneliness and his desire to be loved. And the writer also did a very good job to make me giggle and smile while reading the book. And honestly, I predicted the plot twist and it was right as I expected but still, it surprised me.
However, the ending was a little bit disappointing. it felt rushed and something was left hanging. I was expecting more closure. And then some of Joe's inner thoughts were a bit confusing, sometimes it pulled me out of the story. Overall the book is okay.

Just Clear Your Mind is one of those rare books that manages to be both deeply moving and laugh-out-loud funny. Joe’s story pulled me in immediately—his chaotic inner world, his struggle to navigate everyday life with undiagnosed ADHD, and his raw honesty felt incredibly real. What stood out most for me was the balance of humor and heartbreak—it didn’t try to fix everything, and that made it all the more powerful. I found myself nodding along, tearing up, and even laughing in unexpected moments. A great read for anyone who’s ever felt like their brain has a mind of its own.

In what is neither a fiction novel, nor a non-fiction essay, debut author Blue Matt Jeff takes us on a whirlwind ride through what it feels like to grow up with undiagnosed ADHD in a world that is neither easy to navigate as a neurodivergent person; nor kind toward those who struggle to keep up with the overwhelm of it all.

Something that I valued deeply about this book was the way it kept me guessing whether I was reading a fictionalised memoir, or a very autobiographical tale. Being an undiagnosed neurodivergent person is a rather challenging thing to deal with, and oftentimes it makes as little sense to us as it does to everyone else that we struggle with seemingly mundane stuff that is considered "basic manners. Why do you keep arriving late? Why aren't you able to plan ahead of deadlines? Why do you keep showing up for work in stained, or wrinkled, clothes? Why won't you return texts? Why, why, why are you like this? Don't you care about others? Don't you respect the people you interact with? Our life is best summarised as an endless stream of negative comments, self-deprecation, and the feeling that we just aren't good enough to exist in this world. This was excellently depicted in "Just Clear Your Mind", and as a person whose ADHD went undiagnosed until I was 23 because it was easier to label me as "lazy", "disrespectful", "untrustworthy" and "chronically spaced out", I wept a couple of times while reading this book.

Something that I also quite enjoyed was the way Jeff wove together the struggles with mental health and undiagnosed ADHD and the repercussions on those around him. While the book is short, and doesn't allow for that much exploration of different topics, the main character's blossoming bond with Maya was a beautiful example of how much of a difference an understanding and supportive person can make.

If I had to suggest any major changes or improvements, I'd say I would have liked to see more of the main character's own thoughts and attitude toward the voices in his head. While the author's note clarifies that they are not psychotic spectrum disorder symptoms, and nor are they "real voices", there was enough of a personality to each of those voices that I felt like a lot was left up in the air. Why do they mention that Stan is "older"? Why are there different voices, each with its own personality? How do the voices interact? I wish there had been more time to look at these questions, since the idea of describing ADHD symptoms as "voices" was very interesting and I wanted to know a lot more by the end of the book.

Overall this book is an excellent journey through the undiagnosed ADHD experience, and I would recommend reading it to anyone interested in knowing a little more about what our lives look like from the inside.

This is one of those books you will either love/hate, understand/be confused, relate to/not.

I liked this book for writing down the crazy thoughts and emotions one can have in a day, and sometimes the other voices in your should be named as well. I am a little sad that we didn't get more time with his past and how it affects him presently with a psychiatrist or how they tackle his voices.

The ending did feel a bit rushed, but I did like how much character development we got for the main character.

The writing was good, a couple sections that got confusing with character dialogue and who was speaking when, and the last 15% being a rush of time we get no context t how much has gone by.

Overall good read.

My brain? Chaos. This book? RELATABLE.

Okay, this book had me feeling seen in the most hilarious, heartbreaking way. 😂 Joe’s mind is basically a mental mosh pit, and reading his story felt like eavesdropping on the inner monologue I never admit out loud. It’s messy, honest, weirdly comforting, and SO needed. If your thoughts go 100 mph and you’ve ever felt like you’re the only one who can’t “just focus,” Just Clear Your Mind will make you feel less alone—and maybe even proud of your beautiful, buzzy brain. 🧠💥💬

This was okay. Ultimately, I just don’t think it was for me, as it was more character centric than plot centric. It didn’t feel like a lot was happening, despite quite a lot actually happening. The dialogue felt a little stilted to me (little to no contractions were used, which is a personal reading dislike).
I do think it did a good job of making the reader feel like they were inside the mind of someone with undiagnosed ADHD. Overall, it was a quick and decently interesting read.

I received an ARC copy of this book. I wanted to read this story to get a better understanding of what my grandson gose through every day. It definitely gave me some perspective. I don't think this book was really for me. I found it very hard to focus and follow while read, without taking several breaks in between. A book this short usually takes me.2-3 hours in one sitting. In reality it has taken me 4 days.
