I’ll give my thoughts on the poems by each author separately
Will Fleming (3*) - These poems have some wonderful turns of phrase, and cover some interesting topics, but I can’t give it more than a 3 because I don’t get most of it. My favourite was “Of People Born Unfree”
Lucy Holme (3*) - These were much more stream of consciousness, and felt much more intimate in scope than Will Fleming’s poetry. My favourite was “[Sea lion] woman comes [on land], swims in a pool and steals man’s [chair] lane.
Dillon Jaxx (3.5*) - great to see diversity in collections like this (Dillon is queer, non-binary, and disabled). I especially loved the image of church they conjured in the first few poems collected here. My favourite though, was “# My Brother’s Needlework #” as it was such an interesting way of talking about trauma and (in my interpretation) suicide.
Jam Kraprayoon (3*) - I’ll be honest, I didn’t get most of these but I think that’s a me thing rather than the poems themselves. The ones I did get I loved, especially “An Inventory of Invasive Species”, with “The News From America” coming in close second.
Adam Panichi (3.75*) - another queer poet, for anyone who specifically looks for LGBT representation when picking what they read. I really struggled with a rating for his work because the poems that worked for me really worked for me and the ones that didn’t, really didn’t. My two favourites: “Cupid, Grown” and “Bathhouse”: were my favourites of the whole collection.
