This boxed set contains The Pursuit of Lies: Book 4, The Betrayal of Lies: Book 5, The Harbor of Lies: Book 6 - plus a BONUS Short Story (best read after reading Book 4).
Emily Parker is a sassy young private investigator in the affluent small town of Paradise Valley, who has been uncovering clues that her late husband was not who he said he was. Her business is growing, as is her relationship with the handsome police detective, Colin Andrews. With the help of her close circle of girlfriends and the sexy police detective, Emily takes on one case after another as Colin tries convince her to stop throwing herself into the center of danger and marry him.
A captivating series, full of romance, mystery, and intrigue. Think "Sex and the City" meets "Nancy Drew" (without all the bed-hopping).
Debra Burroughs writes with intensity and power. Her characters are rich and the stories are full of compelling suspense and real romance. She can be found, most days, sitting in front of her computer in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, dreaming up and writing about strong women, their relationships with men (good and bad), involved in exciting, mysterious, and romantic situations.
I was disappointed to read the first book of this multi-volume set. I won't be reading any more by this author. I expected a murder mystery but what I read was much more like a romance or soap-opera story with a mystery side story. This book appears to be written by a woman with other women as the main target audience. Not being a woman, I found the frequent use of emotions, feelings, and bodily urges to be overdone and unrealistic.
Here's a direct quote to illustrate: "He stirred something in her she hadn't felt in a long time and her body was on fire. Standing under the moonlight reflecting on the bay, she resolved to do whatever she could to prove the man innocent. If she couldn't set him free and make him her husband, she was certain she would be consumed by the fires that raged within her." This is over the top, and just plain too much for me!
The mystery part of the story was fine - it was interesting and well-told, even if a predictable and often-used story and format. I might have given the story about 3.5 stars, except for the sappy romance, as referenced previously. I have almost 700 books in my "To Read" list, and this one had the HIGHEST rating (by other Goodreads members) of all of them. Normally, I have a lot of faith in Goodreads ratings, but in this case, I think many of these other reviewers have gone badly wrong!
So bad in so many ways I am not sure where to begin. I will admit that in several places I simply couldn’t stand to slog through it so I just skimmed over it as quickly as I could. The characters are ridiculous, the plots are outrageous and the writing is...well I don’t even have a word to describe the writing. But I am sure the author could come up with several unnecessary adjectives to use in each and every sentence to describe the writing. I appreciate the scene being set, but knowing that the waiter has his dark hair parted and slicked back and that the menus are tall, adds nothing to the scene, the plot, or my enjoyment of the story, and it is like that with every sentence. It is like reading a report that was written for school and X number of words were required. I also got quite tired of the references to the dead husband that was (SPOILER ALERT) not dead, so he came back, then he died (probably). Like I said, ridiculous and outrageous. I kept going hoping that it would improve, but it never did. I will not be reading any more by this author.

Emily Parker was engaged to Colin and supposed to get married when someone in her life, supposedly read keeps showing up was he a ghost? Murder of the minister that was supposed to marry them set off a chain of events. He was not who he said he was and her sisters husband is fun off the road.. So many mysteries keep you planted in this series and I was wondering which decision Emily would make. She made the one I was hoping for. Read this from book one. It is a different mystery for each book but to know the characters and the whole story it is better to read in succesion.
I bought this set in 2019. The first two books #4 and 4.5, it seem the author struggled with the contents of the time line of the stories. It was not until book five the author sorted the time line out. In book five the characters became three dimensional and interesting. The stories could use a bit of editing. They are filled with run on sentences. There is a lot of broken thoughts where the author left part of the story in her head. The stories are a clean romance mystery read. Overall, the reader should enjoy the set. A solid three stars
It started off okay but I wasn't really into it so I skipped to the end. For clarification, I read a couple chapters of book 4 then skipped to end of book 6. Characters were reminiscent of other books I’ve read, mainly of Patterson’s women’s murder club so it felt kind of already done even before I started. That is likely what made me not want to give too much time to the story. Didn't want to give less than 3 stars since it is not author's fault I didn't read the whole thing. Just not my cup of tea is all.
I love Ms. Burroughs writing style. Every book draws me into the story, and I become an invested character. Don’t miss out!
The only issue I have is that the books are very formulaic. My suggestion is to read these books in between different types of reading for optimal enjoyment. I read six of these books in a row and think that I would have enjoyed them even more changing it up a bit.
I really enjoyed the book. I felt like the writer new people hated stupid stuff. The stories flowed and I didn’t have the feeling like oh here it goes again another problem. Thank you. They were great stories that I felt they could have been real without too much drama just enough to keep the story interesting.
I'm not easy to entertain, but D B did just that. Currently it is over a hundred degrees outside and I'm sitting in a fat chair in cool air. I looked through my kindle for a Mystery to justify my being lazy and air conditioned. Man I found a good one. Been here all afternoon. Great read..
This book contains everything I look for in a book: a roller coaster of events and emotions, more twists and turns than a winding road, and surprises at every turn. Also it has to have characters you fall in love with. This series has it all and I don't want it to end. You won't want it to either.
I found parts of the book quiet good and the character development was good. The overall plot was improbable and there was far too much male aggrandizement and purposeless romanticism.
I actually got disgusted around the 90% point and dumped the book.
I really enjoyed these books & will definitely look for more by this author. I love mysteries & often figure out the culprit but these stories kept me guessing. The twist & turns were great. The characters were wonderful, too. Well written!
Colin and Emily work together to solve more crimes as their love continues to blossom. They finally plan to marry but obstacles keep popping up, ruining their plans. Will they ever get married?
I found it hard to put this down to get some sleep. I live these characters. Debra is a truly talented writer and I cannot wait to start reading my next book by her.
What a wonderful combination of murders and romance. Debra Burroughs has brought her amazing talent combining the two into a wonderful series of stories. Couldn't put them down, yet didn't want the story of Emily and Colin to end.
What fun reads! These three books were full of mystery and light romance. The plots were well crafted and the characters were well-developed. I am looking forward to my next Debra Burroughs read. These books kept me up until the wee hours of the night.
There was a name of one of the characters that changed from one book to the next. Ernie's wife's name was Marlene in one book and Martha in the next book. Other than that the books are exciting to read and the characterization is well developed.
This set of mysteries, with a detective and his fiancé, a private investigator was not easy to put down. The couple kept running into occurrences that kept them from getting married; including her former husband who was thought to be dead. They had lots of friends who helped them out.
This whole series was entertaining. I couldn't stop reading until the end of each book. Liked the continuity was surprised at the ending. I would recommend this series to anyone who likes clean romance, mystery and adventure.
A thoroughly good read. It was so exciting to read a series of stories each one following on. There was so many twists and turns and the characters so interesting It was great
All 6 of these novels were great reads. I enjoyed the cast of characters, their different personalities, the twists and turns in each story as well as the author keeping it romantic but clean.
I am thoroughly enjoying this series and am in love with pretty much all of the characters. My one complaint is that Ernie's wife has a different name in every book! Marlene, Martha, Marge-which one is it??
