[Читала в рамках челенджу, протягом якого хочу познайомитися з книжками з країн, з яких досі нічого (умовно сучасного) не читала. Країна 9 – Палестина. Англійський переклад з французької.]
Це мемуар палестинської журналістки, письменниці й активістки Есми Аль-Гуль, записаний з її розмов з лівансько-французьким автором Селімом Насібом. Розмови велися арабською, під запис французькою, тож цей переклад англійською, з яким я знайомилася - це вже двічі віддалена від оригіналу версія (навіть якщо рахувати тільки мови, а не факт перетворення усної розмови в писаний текст кимось окрім того, від чийого імені цей текст оповідається). Мені зрозуміле прагнення одразу це видавати європейською мовою для міжнародного вжитку, але не зрозуміле рішення обійтися без написаного тексту від першої особи тією мовою, якою оповідачка сама володіє достатньою мірою, щоб створити аутентифікований текст, з якого далі підуть переклади для всіх потрібних аудиторій. (Тим більше, що вона сама мисткиня слова, а не, скажімо, селебріті, яка людям цікава, але двох слів зв'язати не може і тому потребує ґоустрайтера).
Есма зростала в таборі для біженців в Рафасі, підліткові роки провела в Еміратах, де батько працював інженером, вчилася журналістиці й літературі в Газі, де згодом стала дедалі помітнішою своїми дописами у місцевій і міжнародній пресі з критикою дедалі більш радикально ісламської влади Хамасу в Газі, та активісткою за збереження громадських свобод, в тому числі в контексті "арабської весни", якою хронологічно цей мемуар завершується.
Мені було цікавіше тут радше про її роки зростання та умови в сім'ї, завдяки яким вони змогла вирости достатньо інтелектуально незалежною. Про численні її сутички з офіційними органами Хамасу та неформальною поліцією моралі в пізніші роки - очевидно, важливо оповідати і повідомляти міжнародній аудиторії в тому ключі, в якому "просто важливо" знати про боротьбу за права людини, але з точки зору читацького досвіду все ж ті перші розділи (значна частина книжки, не якісь пару перших розділів) мені були цікавіші.
Варто зазначити, що цей мемуар з 2016 року, тобто ізраїльсько-палестинську війну останніх років він не заторкає. (Зате детально розповідає про досвід трьох попередніх коротших війн. Хотіла написати "конфліктів", зупинила себе, виправила.) Цікаво, що перше видання ішло за підзаголовком "історія однієї жінки зсередини арабської весни" - коли поняття "арабська весна" було більше на слуху, а перевидання 2025 року, в тому числі аудіо-книжка, яку я слухала, йде за підзаголовком "говорить дочка Рафаху" - коли впізнаваною стала назва "Рафах". Англійський переклад начитано непогано (я слухала в дорозі, а потім дочитувала з текстової версії), акторкою, у якої гарна англійська, але й гарна арабська, тож арабські назви в тексті звучать автентично, а не переінакшені на американський лад (ну ладно, наскільки я можу судити). Але мені було корисним глянути на відео з самою Есмою, де вона виступає навіть арабською, не задля змісту виступів, а просто щоб зіставити живу постать з текстом, який від її імені мені переказали через стільки посередників.

I cannot recommend this highly enough. Asmaa Alghoul is an award-winning journalist, who was raised in a refugee camp in Rafah and spent most of her life in Gaza.
This book is an account of her day-to-day life, and reads more like a series of intimate diary entries than journalistic essays.
And that's its power.
She gives no quarter when it comes to skewering those who made it hard to be a "strong-minded woman" in Gaza.
The terror of Israeli bombing, the suffocating reach of the increasingly conservative Hamas regime and the corruption of Fatah are all addressed.
Where she excels is explaining what that is like at a familial level. Relatives who refuse to speak to her because of her staunch independence. Others who open up their homes, hearts and libraries to a young girl who is a voracious reader, keen writer, and critic of all the forces that stifle women in Gaza.
The book ends around 2014, so the tragedy that is modern Gaza is not covered. It is more in the absence of small moments of joy that are described in the book that the current conflict is seen. Families throughout the region gathering around televisions to watch Turkish soap operas in which Muslim families drink alcohol and have flings! The pride felt throughout Gaza when one of their own won Arab Idol. The food. Days spent at the beach (under the ever-watchful eye of Hamas officers looking for morality crimes!).
For the contemporary reader these glimpses of ordinary moments of joy and rebellion ring particularly bitter, knowing the devastation wrought by Israel today.

A must read for people who want to better understand the conflicts in The Middle East - person to person- from a Palestinian perspective.
An open and honest Memoir offering a tribute to Palestinian culture, a glimpse into how Hamas infiltrates & takes hold of desperate lives under the horrific impact of occupation. It also is about the struggles of Islamic women.
Although well -written and readable, this is a difficult story filled with the heartbreaks of war.
It is also about the survival and triumph of the author, offering a bit of hope in a hopeless corner of this troubled world .

The narrator did such an amazing job at bringing Asmaa's emotions and power to her words and this absolutely stunned me. Like so many other books about Gaza, this hit me deep and I can't overstate how much you should read this book. The way Asmaa writes made me stop and think and really swallow her words and that's how you know a book is powerful. 5 stars isn't enough!!
