Read The Defiance (Brilliant Darkness, #2), the highly anticipated sequel to The Scourge (Brilliant Darkness, #1), a 2013 Next Generation Indie Book Award Finalist!

It hasn’t been long since Fennel, a Sightless Groundling, and Peree, her Lofty Keeper, fell in love and learned the truth: the Scourge, and their world, is not what it seems.

Fenn and Peree are determined to guide their people to the protected village of Koolkuna, but first they must convince them that everything they believe is a lie. An impossible task, especially when someone seems hell-bent to try anything—even animal sacrifice and arson—to destroy the couple’s new bond and crush the frail truce between the Groundlings and the Lofties. Not everyone wants to uproot their lives in the forest, and those who stay behind will be left terribly vulnerable.

Fenn and Peree’s resolve to be together despite their people’s disapproval, and the constant threat of the Scourge’s return, pushes both groups to the breaking point. Unable to tell friend from foe, Fenn must again decide how much she’s willing to sacrifice to ensure the people of the forest’s future.
Only this time, the price of peace may be too high to bear.

Praise for The Defiance:
“I absolutely LOVED The Defiance! No, I more than loved it! It was breathtaking, intense, romantic, suspenseful . . . the list could go on and on!”
-- ARC review

Praise for The Scourge:
“Lovable and relatable heroine? Check. Swoon-worthy, kick-butt hero? Check. Compelling romance that makes your heart melt and toes curl? Check. Captivating story and fascinating world? Check. Eagerly anticipating the next book? Check, check, check.”

This was a great sequel, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think the first was better but I still loved this one

We see Fenn and Peree's relationship blossom more. They begin to see each other and grow fond of one another. But not everyone is happy to see a Groundling and a Lofty being together. In fact, they make it extremely difficult for them to see each other, even going to lengths of punishments if they are caught together.

But that's not there only problem, Fenn only return home to the forest to tell the people that there is a place where the Hidden Waters exist, a place with no dangers. But to convince the people to join them makes it harder for them. Especially since there are attacks and threats of a war happening between them
Will Fenn and Peree be able to convince people to join them? Or will they suffer more by doing so?
They must make a choice, to stay and convince them to go with them, or to just go on themselves

I warn you, this book goes through a ride of emotions. We will see characters being angry and bitter, hurt and emotional, betrayed and suspected of crimes. All these emotions make you feel sympathy for most of these characters, especially Fenn. She is brave yet fragile at times but I still love her for that and her courage to fight for others over herself.

This was a wonderful novel, and then that ending happened!! Thank goodness I have the complete boxset because that cliffhanger is huge! A very but clever unexpected turn occurs and I can't wait to see what happens next!

Received a copy from the author herself in exchange for an honest review, thank you!

MY THOUGHTS

So this book.....

I'm not a sequel/second book person, something about it just puts me off.... For no apparent reason.

So going into The Defiance I have to admit that I was scared that it would live up to my expectations of what the second book in this series should be.

Here's the thing, I really should have just trusted the author that this book would be fantastic, because it really truly was.

So first of all, I'm not normally a crier, I mean sure there are some books that can easily reduce me to a sobbing mess, but those books are rare. And I have to say that this book had a huge emotional impact on me! These were characters I loved from a book that I have reread countless times. (Talking about the Scourge here). And several things that happened in this book carried such a huge emotional impact. And I was supremely impressed with A.G. Henley for now only being able to deliver such a profound emotional blow, but also doing it with her amazingly vivid descriptions.

Throughout the book I connected to Fenn. With the amazing writing style I was able to understand all of the pain she was going through and the decisions she was having to make. It was brilliantly done.

The main character Fenn is blind. So you would think that, that fact would hinder the author's ability to create a world completely different from our own, right? WRONG. Fenn's descriptions using her other senses as well as the other character's verbal descriptions help to establish exactly how Fenn's world looks.

And onto Peree.
Several thoughts: he remains awesome. He and Fenn are perfect for each other. And if I ever have to gush over how cute a fictional relationship, I would chose this one. =D
Enough said.

And have I mentioned the extreme epicness of EVERY single other character on this book? (Yes, even the evil ones!)

And the ending..... Does no one realize that the next book doesn't come out to 2014? Fact it says it right on one of the last pages where it lists off the information. (Don't worry it does give a small summary for the next book.... I know what I'll be repeatedly reading until then!) And the ending was insane. At first I was like awwww, this is so cute. I needed to run around my house doing fangirly screams. (Note: This idea would not have been good.... I was finishing it up at like one in the morning.... Grumpy family from lack of sleep=not good) But then I continued to read and in the last couple of pages.... I couldn't even function enough to stand up, let alone run around screaming. That ending was killer and I mean it in a OMG I totally respect this author for her magnificent ideas and ability to stun me killer. (I was so not expecting any of that!!) and then the summary of the next one just threw me for a loop. It also made me want to cry.. Just a bit anyways! Why are authors so cruel but at the same time so amazing? Life should not work this way!

And lets take a moment to hush over the cover. It is so pretty is it not? And it really fits with the series! Although personally I don't think that anything will be able to outdo the first cover (or book for that matter!)

Hmmm..... What else should I say...
Well if you liked The Scourge prepare to love this just as much!!! Ummm... Have I mentioned how heart breaking this is??? Seriously.....My heart=completely broken.

Somehow A.G. Henley was able to artfully continue Fenn's journey to saving her people with ease that not many other authors could manage to do. I must impress upon you how truly AMAZING this book was! So claps for the author for managing to wow me to such an extreme level! So I guess what I'm really trying to say is that without a doubt, The Defiance is a (very) worthy follow up to one of my all time favorite books!

YOUR MISSION

Moving on..... So wait, do I hear a voice in the crowd? Is someone telling me that they have yet to read The Scourge? *Gasp* whoever you may be, I am shocked, I am dismayed, I am thoroughly disgusted with you....(kidding...not really)

BUT, lucky for you The Scourge is on sale for the low low price of 99 cents. *Grins evilly* So I believe you have, but one option, GO BUY IT!! And while you're at it, you might want to go pick up The Keeper for the same low price. And if you didn't know, The Keeper is a short novella told from Peree's POV describing the events that occurred at the beginning of The Scourge!

In case you're more likely to cave into my peer pressure than my skills of persuasion, I'll leave you on this note with the mantra
DO IT AND YOU'RE COOL
Repeating in your head.
(Man, I am a really good salesperson.....not)

SO My merry friend go off in the the brilliant darkness to buy these books!!!

WAIT ONE MORE THING!
Do me a favor and if you have read this book, TALK TO ME!! I really need a person to share in my heartbreak, PLEASE!! I AM BEGGING YOU!!!

Yet another NOTE: There were no eardrums harmed in the making of this review or the reading of the book. But my own heart was shattered several times. I will update you on my road to healing as the day progresses....

WOULD I BUY THIS BOOK: YES!!! Is there even another possible answer?
WOULD I READ THIS BOOK: I REPEAT: There is no way I could restrain myself from reading this!
WOULD I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK: YES, YES, YES!!!! It shall take the world by storm!!!
WILL I READ MORE BY THIS AUTHOR: YEP!!!!
WILL I READ THE NEXT BOOK: I have already begun stalking A.G. Henley's blog.....**cackles evilly to self**

Well I don't know what it is but I love this story. I like the almost Romeo and Juliet feel to it. All the secrets that the two groups holds is amazing and some of the people who wanted to leave does surprise me. The idea that Moon goes into labor at the worse time helped the angst of the journey. Now we have this new group to deal with and what will happen to the people they left behind? Will we actually find out?

I was really looking forward to this book, and I'm kind of sad to say that it really didn't live up to my expectations. I liked it, but I didn't love it. Spoilers ahead, ye be warned.

I felt throughout the entire book, there just was not a whole lot that was going on. Too much time was spent on the arguing between going or not going and who was coming and not coming. I felt that Peree and Fenn's relationship did not develop much at all, and all of the threats that they receive are kind of brushed off to the side when it is revealed that it was Moray and his brother. Why even put that in if it is not going to amount to anything?

The main problem I had with the book is Eland's death. I get that the point is that Fenn sacrifices things she isn't prepared to sacrifice, but I think that killing Eland kind of makes the book lose that "spark" and now it's just, well, a book. I was not really curious about how the book would end, because it was quite anticlimactic. Eland dies, and the journey is just a blur, which I get that's how Fenn feels and we're getting the story from her POV, but there's just so many holes.

And then the ending seems a bit random to me. I know we hear the story earlier in the book, but it really was just added on with no rhyme or reason. I feel like it just helps so that there's a title for the third book.

After reading the synopsis for the third book, I'm not really sure what to think either. I mean, I'll probably end up reading it, but I'm not on the edge of my seat waiting in anticipation. If Fenn and Peree's love is as epic as the reader is led to believe, then a demand from Kai that she wants what Fenn has really shouldn't be a primary focus for the third book.

I don't know. I guess we shall see.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I wish it was possible to give 6 star reviews. Yes, I realize that the same rules apply to 5 star reviews, but I have a distinct rationale behind this thought. There are a few authors who I always tend to give 5 star reviews for, simply for the pure entertainment their books provide. However, I can count on one hand the number of authors who provide a compelling storyline as well underlying themes that cause me to reevaluate myself and the society we live in. For example, Suzanne Collins with The Hunger Games Trilogy, Veronica Roth with the Divergent Trilogy, and now A.G. Henley with The Brilliant Darkness Series. While I love these books for the plot and amazing characters I also enjoy evaluating my paradigms, and all of these authors cause me to reflect on society for months (and in some cases years) after first reading the books.

Henley does a great job picking up where she left off with her first book The Scourge. Fenn and Peree are back with their respective “tribes” and are having a much harder time convincing people that there really is a better way to live. Fenn in particular is determined to help as many of her friends and other Groundlings that there truly is a better way to live. However, very few want to see her succeed. The tensions are even higher between the Groundlings and the Lofties, and she and Peree aren’t sure who to trust other than each other. Each tribe wants to keep them apart, because they are upsetting the status quo. Just how far will people go to maintain that status quo? It becomes apparent that both Peree and Fenn are in grave danger; will they be able to escape with their lives or will Fenn sacrifice hers in an attempt to unite the tribes?

I have to admit there were several times I wanted to throw my iPad across the room because Fenn was so adamant about trying to open peoples’ eyes to new possibilities as well as the truth even when if meant risking her own life. She felt guilty about leaving the Groundlings, and people preyed on her goodness. I wanted to shout at her that if people are so resistant to change and disrupting the status quo then “screw them, it’s their choice”!! While Henley doesn’t convey her underlying themes (paradigm shifts, the courage to change, and ultimately the freedom to choose) like Suzanne Collins that in no way makes her books any less enjoyable. That’s what’s so great about reading various authors; there are only so many genres to go around yet each author puts his/her stamp on their books. Henley allows the reader to experience the hope, frustration, fear, and resolve of underlying themes through her characters thoughts. Through Fenn’s thoughts we are able to understand what Henley is trying to portray regarding her underlying themes. However, she does it in such a way that the reader can simply enjoy the book or analyze it to death the way I do! :)

I really enjoyed watching the relationships of various characters evolve in this book. I was so proud of Fenn for standing up for her beliefs yet also knowing that not many people are willing to broaden their horizons and take risks. This book had me chuckling, wanting to beat my head against a wall, and a few tears even escaped. As a writer, that’s how you know you’ve succeeded. As a reader, that’s what draws me into a story and keeps me begging for more.
And luckily for us there is a 3rd book coming!!! I highly recommend this book. The characters are extremely relatable to, the plot is well thought-out and good, and the world building is rock solid. I was extremely lucky to get an advanced copy form the author is exchange for my honest review. I’m looking forward to the next installment. Hurry A.G.!!

Talk about all over the place emotions here! One minute you are happy and the next it is so sad and hopeless. I felt a wide range of anger, hate, sorrow, despair and hope, love and then bam it ends with another emotion. I was finally relaxing after the long journey it took to get to the end of the book that I didn’t see it coming. Yes, there is a cliffhanger.

If you haven’t read the first book, you would want to read it first. There is so much you wouldn’t understand if you jumped into the second one.

I was grateful that at times the author put things in the beginning to remind me of some of the things that happened in the first book.

Also, I don't really think of the Scourge or the ill ones as Zombies. Ms. Henley described them in such a way that I didn't feel that way at all.

Fenn and Peree return from Koolkuna to get her brother and anyone else who would come with them to find peace and understand about the Scourge. That they really aren’t the Scourge but ill ones, they can talk to you if you aren’t drinking the water near their home.

But there is a long history and much mistrust in the two factions of people, the Lofties and the Groundlings. It’s kind of like Romeo and Juliette, a forbidden love. And everyone constantly tries to separate the two. But Fenn and Peree love each other and they will do what they need to be together.

Well, except that Fenn is a little stubborn in trying to get people to listen and not leave when she is almost killed and threatened multiple times.

I love how Peree is always there for Fenn and doesn’t care that she is blind. He doesn’t care about their differences and loves her so unconditionally. Fenn loves him too and also loves her brother fiercely and almost looses everything in getting people to leave.

Bear still carries a torch for Fenn but is there for her, however he can. Moray, well he is still a jerk but there is a motive to his madness here.

I don’t think I can tell you too much without ruining the end. But I will tell you that Moon has her baby outside of a good shelter. That was so sweet.

I just hate cliffhangers! Grr....

Meanwhile, I will share some excerpts from some of the sad parts that put some perspective on loss.

"It's a gift that you're still alive, Bear. A gift your family wasn't given. Don't squander it."

"Don't run away from the pain, Fenn. Feel it, respect it, and move on,like Aloe told me to do. Burying it only makes you sick inside. Trust me"

"And that's when it hits me. My broken heart is irrelevant. How **** or Aloe would feel doesn't matter much, either. It's far too late to worry about that. But I can make Peree happy. I can do that. Isn't that what love really is, after all? Setting aside your own problems to be there for the other person when they need you? It's what Peree's always done for me."

This book is near perfection. There is ZERO second book syndrome. None at all. In fact, the story glides perfectly from book one to book two without a single hitch. And while I still suffer the usual book hangover, I am not left with the bitter taste in my mouth so common after reading a middle book. There was no filler, and no overdose of book 1 repetition. The characters were already formed, and they stayed true to who they were in The Scourge.

Henley has continued building depth to each and every one of the characters. I love her use of metaphors to bring texture to Fen's view of the world. While I feel like I now know Fen like a sister, there was simply not enough of Peree in this book. I could feel the pull between them, and their bond is stretched taut. While I was pretty much already in love with Fen and Peree, I have now learned to mistrust every other character, and I may even hate a few. I use the word "hate" in a good way. As in, "the villains you love to hate". And MAN OH MAN do I ever hate Kai with a fiery passion!! I'm not even sure if she's technically a villain, but I don't care! She makes my blood boil and the bile rise up in my throat! I would totally throttle her... if she wasn't a fictional character, that is. It's hard to keep a level head when you're so invested in a series!

The Scourge had ended on a nice final note. There wasn't a huge cliffhanger, so I have to admit, I was kind of assuming it would be the same with The Defiance. Crap, was I ever wrong. Here I was, flipping pages, all warm and glowy with how everything was working out when BAM! Out of nowhere I ran into a wall. A big, giant, red brick wall of NNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Now I have this supreme desperation for the next book. 2014?? SERIOUSLY?!? Unacceptable. Just... no.

I'm sending out a huge thank you to my friend Elyse, who loves this series too. Without her, I probably would have waited to read this installment, and I would have been missing out. <3

[Full disclosure: I liked the first book so much that I asked A. G. Henley for an ebook copy of The Defiance in exchange for an honest review.]

Oftentimes series with great first books never really measure up to the potential that I see in the first book. Usually the second book lets me down in what I like to call Book 2 Syndrome. Fortunately, The Defiance didn’t suffer from this at all. In fact, it should probably be held up as an example of how second books should be written.

The Defiance starts off pretty much where we left off: with Peree and Fenn back in their respective tribes, trying to tell people that the Scourge are really just sick people and not real zombies. Trying to tell someone something that would change their entire worldview is very difficult and that fact is reflected in the slower pace of the story. Even though her very life is at risk, Fenn tries so hard to convince everyone that they should go to Koolkuna when she and Peree leave. She wants everyone in both tribes, even the truly horrible people, to go and live a good life.

I’m not someone who is big on romance, but I love how Fenn and Peree’s romance has progressed. It’s gone from a sweet, budding sort of young love to a more mature, secure love. You can tell that these two people love each other no matter what, even though their respective tribes will do practically anything to keep them apart. What’s so interesting about the whole Brilliant Darkness series is the fact that Fenn is blind and yet we get such a vivid picture of the characters and the surroundings. It’s sort of refreshing that the main character isn’t constantly describing how perfect her love interest’s looks are. No, Fenn focuses on who Peree is as a person and that is just what I like to see in YA.

The plot starts off a little slow like it did in The Scourge, but things quickly heat up. The mysterious threats about Peree and Fenn’s relationship, the plotting of several community members as well as the impending move to Koolkuna made me read The Defiance all in one sitting. It really was that good and I hated it when I knew the book was about to end. And on such a cliffhanger! I can’t wait for the third book, The Fire Sisters!

I give this book 5/5 stars.

For those of you who loved AG Henley's debut novel, the Scourge, you will love her much awaited and anticipated follow up, the Defiance (and I'm happy to say she's busily writing the next book as well about the Fire Sisters). Without giving too much away, I will say this: if you are passionate about your characters, as I am with Fennel and Peree, you will both love and want to scream at Henley for her cliff hanger ending (though, I do have to hand it to her, it was well played!). book two of the Brilliant Darkness series takes us on Fennel and Peree's uphill struggle with trying to convince the groundlings and lofties to go with them to Koolkuna, where the water's pure, the people live in harmony, and their society will be welcomed--eliminating the threat of the Scourge who they live in perpetual fear of. Why then don't they want to trust Fennel and Peree and take their people to a place that offers survival? It's not really answered in book two, though it's alluded to, and of course, the Three are behind the struggle for control of the groundlings' fate. When there is no longer hope, and threats become too dangerous for them to stay, Fennel and Peree finally lead a small group of willing citizens of both groundlings and lofties to the nirvana that is Koolkuna...but not without sacrifice of the biggest sort. While the front part of the novel is more slowly paced, as soon as the decision to go is made, the book speeds up and is over before you know it (or want it to be!). Just when you see the light and want to know what happens, BAM! (I will not divulge or spoil the ending or give the cliff hanger away, but you'll probably do something equally silly like rant at Henley as I did to hurry up and get writing because it's a special kind of torture making us wait like this...) Solid second novel in the series, and I suspect book three will blow us away as a new civilization unfolds and more drama ensues for our loveable couple Fennel and Peree (and they'd better get their HEA, or else!). =)

Overall it's a book I liked. There were a lot of things like plot holes, flat characters, and things that just didn't cohesively flow in the story that made this more slogfest instead of a consuming-in-no-time type of book. I became very annoyed with Fennel. I can't put my finger on why, but the huge pity party she continually throws herself definitely had something to do with it. I was hoping this book would be so much more fulfilling. It felt like the premise was to make it back to Koolkuna but Henley just kept throwing obstacles in the way so it would just stretch the story out instead of events naturally unfolding.

I'd read book 1 quite a while ago. Really liked it, but just hadn't gotten around to continuing on with the series (not available at my library, on KU but I didn't have a membership, but on a 3-month deal now). I'd been able to add inexpensive audio ($2) to the first book and re-read it (listening) but wasn't sure I wanted to spend the $7.5 for the audio. The books are short, and I could get the kindle copy for free. It does take me longer to READ books now (whereas I've been speeding through audio as I can listen while I do other things).

I still like the series, and I am going on to the next book to conclude it ... but this didn't have quite the same impact on me as the first book. Maybe it was the introduction of this world, with the Groundlings and Lofties and The Scourge that was so interesting. Here, that has all been established already ... sometimes that makes a sequel stronger for me, when I already know the setting and characters. This time it dragged a little. I was frustrated with both sets of people, and very unhappy with some of the events :(

This book ends on a happy note, with a wedding. My book included the first chapter of the sequel so I could see that right off, things happen to spoil our happy ending. Some authors may have concluded the book on the cliffhanger, and I think I'm glad the wasn't the case (even though including the first chapter had the same effect, book 2 is really NOT a cliffhanger, book 3 just starts off in the next moment with a horrible event ...)

So much heart and strength

Another 2 days have come and gone, with me being totally absorbed by a Brilliant Darkness book. I learned about pain, strength, hope and true and selfless love. The story is gripping and the embedded stories are SO good. Its so nice that they tell each other the stories to comfort and help. The Coyote and The Spear Feather were fantastic! (The Spear Feather is the perfect murder!!). I immediately purchased book 3. Do yourself a monetary favor and just buy the set. 😁 As an aside, the next annoying person I come across, I’ll tell them not to be a Crampberry.

This book takes place after Fenn and Peree get back from Koolkuna. Not much action in this one. It was more of the unrest between the two groups and the ones that want to go Koolkuna. I liked it because it added more to Fenn and Peree's story but it really didn't stand out to me and seemed to drag on in places. Wished there was more of what made the first book so great. Ending was just ok. Nothing really unexpected and did open up for the next story. I received an ebook in exchange for an honest review.

I’m so glad to be back with all the characters I love in this series! While this novel is not the awesome adventure of the first one, there are still so many challenges for Fennel to overcome. Some sad moments too. I still love reading this world through the sightless eyes of Fennel. Still love Peree. Even the bad guys have some redeemable qualities that makes me wish for a happy ending for them. Still love this enough to finish the series. I bought the boxed set.

Another Winner!!

This without a doubt deserves a five star rating. I love the way the author brings the characters to life and makes you feel like you are a part of the story. I love all of the characters and their personalities which are so unique to them.
I couldn't put it down and can't wait to read the next one. I would recommend this book to others.

The twists and turns continue for our heroes, Peree and Fenn as they try to help their communities that are not comfortable with the two being a couple. Danger, loss, joy, are all part of life for these two. The story continues ... and now I have to by the 3rd book in this series!

Weird. That’s the best description of this series. I don’t even know why I moved on to book 2, but it’s not as good as book 1. And at the end of it, I just had to stop. It’s not terrible writing or anything, but it’s not for me. A bit too dark (though NOT truly dark), too weird, too gritty for me.

I remember reading "The Scourge" last year and completely falling for its believable, unique characters and its thrilling storyline. It felt like I was in the forest with Fenn and Peree as they uncovered secrets long hidden, listening to the sound of animals and inhaling the scent of summer. Long story short, I loved it! (You can find the review here!) So when I read on A.G. Henley's blog that the sequel, "The Defiance", in the "Brilliant Darkness" series was being released just last week, I knew I had to get my grubby little hands on it. Of course, I squealed a little in excitement when I got to the cover page, and squealed a little more when I reached the ending! But lemme just start from the beginning.

Not long ago, Fennel and Peree have discovered the impossible truth: the much feared Scourge, and their world, are not what they seem. Now, the Sightless Groundling and the Lofty Keeper are determined to guide their people to the safety of the village of Koolkuna, even if it means exposing the lies their lives were built on--a task more difficult than they'd imagined. And when someone nails animal corpses to Fennel's wall, Fenn and Peree know that not everyone will accept change so easily, even if it means living in constant fear and danger. With the fragile peace between the Groundlings and the Lofties unraveling, Fenn must decide how much she's willing to sacrifice for the happiness of her people--and herself.

I loved Fenn's character in "The Scourge", and I continued to do so in "The Defiance". She's an undeniably strong, compassionate heroine who dedicates so much to her people, even if they were the reason she is Sightless. Her unwavering loyalty is also present in her relationships with her family and friends--her love and protectiveness over her little brother Eland is sweet and understandable, and evokes a lot of emotion as you see their relationship throughout the book. On top of all that, Fenn also possesses some killer wit, which makes her all the more endearing! Who doesn't like a funny protagonist? Despite her strengths, however, Fenn also struggles with her weaknesses, from her inner battle between staying behind as the water bearer for her people and leaving to Koolkuna with Peree for a life of happiness, to her dormant terror of the Scourge, whom she learned to fear ever since she was born. These shortcomings are what make Fenn a truly realistic and engaging main character, and you just cannot help but like her.

Of course, Peree can't go unmentioned here! If I liked Peree in the first book, I absolutely loved him in the second. While in "The Scourge" you saw the development of Peree and Fenn's feelings for each other, in "The Defiance", you see just how strong their relationship is in the face of obstacles as they search for a way to find happiness together. Peree is unfailingly understanding and supportive of Fenn as she struggles with her losses and questions the worth of leaving her home, and knows when to be there for her, or when to let her have some breathing space. I do have to admit, I was a little surprised by how quickly the whole 'intended' thing went, especially toward the end of the novel--they're just teens! But maybe that's just how the Groundlings and Lofties do it...

The plot of "The Defiance" was fairly compelling throughout the length of the novel. There's definitely tension woven into the storyline, like when Moray and Fenn have their little spats, or when Fenn discovers more truths that lead her to question the Council of Three. However, I felt like there was too much time spent on the lead-up to the actual crux of the plot, with the whole preparations for the journey and whatnot. The pace might've been a little quicker and the plot even more engaging if Ms. Henley had condensed the first half or so of the novel, but other than that, the storyline was interesting and exciting--especially at the end! I knew something like that would happen, I just knew it!

Overall, "The Defiance" is a great second installment to the "Brilliant Darkness" series, with incredibly likable and engaging characters, a believable, strong romance, and a pretty exciting plot. Fans of "The Scourge" will definitely love this book, and I cannot wait for the next book!

Book 2 of A.G. Henley’s “Brilliant Darkness” trilogy begins with our heroes Fennel and Peree back where they started, in their respective “hometowns” of Fennel’s Groundling camp and Perry’s Lofty village in the trees. The scourge, or zombie-like people who will invade at any given moment for days on end before retreating to wherever it is they come from, still moan and groan and threaten the lives of everyone Peree and Fenn hold dear. Sure, they may know now that the scourge are actually just sick people who go after humans as a last resort and yes they understand that their fear of said “sick ones” comes from their poisoned water supply. But this knowledge doesn’t make convincing their respective peoples any easier. Now, on top of the risk of complete extinction, our heroes struggle to not only keep their star-crossed romance alive but to get their people to move with them to the safety of Koolkuna where the scourge aren’t feared and where peace is more than a distant daydream- if they can get past their prejudiced differences.

The world of “The Defiance” is very much the same as that of “The Scourge”. The characters are a little more desperate, the stakes a little more drastic. On the whole, however, the novel felt like it carried more of a civil rights message. Fenn and Peree come from two very different- but in truth not so different- places, raised to hate each other or at the very least be wary of one another. Now that they’ve in essence become engaged, all hell is breaking loose. Their respective elders or authority figures increasingly place limits on when and how and where they can see one another, to no avail, and eventually threats are made on their lives. Just for wanting to be together. It was all very straight forward- you know who the good guys are and you know who the bad guys are. What was interesting was Fennel’s own internal debate and struggle, as it becomes increasingly evident that her people would not change, about leaving them behind for the sake of her own happiness or staying to ensure their survival. The reader feels for Fennel as she really struggles to understand the responsibility that comes with the kind of power that she has. Peree doesn’t really change as a character. There wasn’t any visible or marked development on his part though the short story Henley wrote, “The Keeper”, did lend some much appreciated insight into his character and background. I enjoyed seeing things from his point of view because it made the story feel more fleshed out and I hope that Henley decides to add alternating POVs in the future. The one character I did love was Fennel’s brother who is older now and more of a substantial player in the story. I love when younger characters aren’t just mostly irrelevant background features for the main characters to bounce off of. Fennel’s brother, more so than Peree’s cousins, seamlessly transitioned into not only being a main character but a main character who the reader rallies behind and cares about. Without ruining anything, probably one of the main reasons I’m most looking forward to the next book is to find out what exactly has happened to him.

I won’t say how “The Defiance” ended but I will say that Henley added an enemy which I didn’t feel was necessary. It seemed as though her original story track ended and she needed something to carry the series into a third book. There were plenty of places she could have taken the story and the characters and while the new element is interesting and one I’m looking forward to finding out more about, it felt almost like a rushed add on. That being said, “The Defiance” was a good connector book between the first and the hopefully climactic and dramatic third.

Many times the second (and third and forth) book in a series is a letdown. The whole story was told in the first book and the author has no tale left to tell. The much-awaited second book in the Brilliant Darkness Series, The Defiance, was the antithesis of a let down–it was a fun ride and deepened my love of the characters, as A.G.Henley further developed their personalities.

Fenn and Peree have come back to convince as many as their people that a better life awaits them in Koolkuna. They tell about the peaceful life they could have, with no animosity between Groundlings and Lofties. They also relate how there is no fear there of the flesh-eating scourge, that the people of Koolkuna see them as they truly are, sick people in search of food and water. But, their tales are met with skepticism and mistrust. When there are attempts on her life, Fenn realizes she is in danger and must leave her home, regardless of whether she has convinced anyone to accompany her.

She and Peree don’t know who to trust–can she trust the three, the council members? Is it the aptly-named Moray who is attempting to harm her? Even her best friend’s loyalty is called into question. The tension builds as the two camps, Lofties and Groundlings, further divide into those who want to go to Koolkuna and those who want to cling to their old ways. As this drama develops, Fenn and Peree’s relationship deepens, creating further drama–first their relationship is frowned upon, and then is forbidden by their respective groups.

The build up to Peree and Fenn’s relationship is over; the secret is out about the Scourge; the mysterious utopia has been found. Is there anything left to plot in book 2? It turns out there is plenty of suspense to keep the reader turning the pages: the identity of Fenn’s attacker, the trustworthiness of the council members, and whether the group actually would be allowed to leave to find Koolkuna.

But, what really made this an excellent read was the character development. Not only did I grow to love Peree and Fenn more, but I learned about Bear. I grew to love his steadfastness and devotion to Fenn even though he knew her heart belonged to another. Fenn and Peree’s relationship evolved but so did Fenn and Eland’s. There were subplots and characters, such as Frost and Moray’s unusual relationship, that kept me interested. And, written from Fenn’s point of view, I discovered the depth of her emotion as she ruminated about the death of her mother, her motherly feelings toward Eland and her mixed feelings about where her loyalties lay.

The dialogue throughout was excellent–playful bantering between Fenn and Peree, loving friendship between Fenn and her buddies, and disgust and distrust between Fenn and Moray.

Things I wholeheartedly enjoyed: The character development, the suspense inherent in the plot, Fenn and Peree’s relationship, the fantastic twist at the end, making me impatient for book 3.

Things I did not enjoy: Can’t think of a thing!

Overall: Five stars, The Defiance is a terrific sequel to The Scourge. It lives up to the high bar that The Scourge and The Keeper set–cannot wait for book 3 in this series! by Laura Masciarelli, author of Quest

- Review taken from my YA book blog Little Paper Rose

(3.5)

From chapter one something unsettling occurs and puts the first half of the story in a slightly eerie light. Someone's out to get Fenn and you'll speculate if it's from the inside or the outside. This was where I was most frustrated that Fenn couldn't see and that this person terrorizing her was getting away with it so easily.

However, I had an inkling that (not only who it was but) that it ultimately wasn't going to leave such a big dent in the storyline. It kept you on your toes and reminded you not to get too comfortable but it didn't really conflict the story the way it could have. By the time everything was revealed it didn't matter anymore (though there will be a little twist in the revelation.)

I had a huge problem with Moray. Who else. If you've read the first installment you'll know this character attempted rape and murder on Fenn. Prior to this, his family had threatened to kill Fenn's little brother and plotted against Fenn's "adoptive" mom, Aloe, whom was one of the Three.

These are quotes from 'The Defiance': "

".. He [Moray] didn't face any other consequences [except for a bitten tongue which Fenn caused him] for attacking me and leaving me to die in the ground.. Neither did his family.."

".. The new Council didn't have the will to really punish Moray's family after all our losses"

Reading this practically made me see red. What the actual what?! Unbelievable and unrealistic that a man capable of such horrid things was free to prance around being obnoxious and disgusting towards the victim and no one thinks twice about it.

Not only this but Moray is the one to get assigned to protect Fenn when she's working alone in the caves. Oh-kay.. clearly the fact that he'd forced himself on her, tied her up, and pushed her into a pit (that later filled with water) to die, means absolutely nothing.
All of this was just impossible for me to get past since Moray is in a lot of the story (even if he tried redeeming himself later on, it could never be enough.)

I actually really felt for Fenn's friendship with Calli and how her best friend had turned into someone she didn't know if she could trust anymore. But I rooted for Calli. And I loved Bear, he was so wonderful. Despite his feelings for Fenn, he was an amazing support and really made an impact on the story and in Fenn's life.

There were some superb character development, for sure.

Speaking of chosen. I'm not short of love for Peree. 'The Defiance' was definitely much more centered around the love between the Groundling and the Lofty and the people working against it. I couldn't help but wanting to scream, "Their love hurts no one!"

Fenn doesn't leave for Koolkuna until more than half of the book. I found that it was a little slow in the beginning because Fenn just kind of hangs around and gets into trouble when you want her to pack her things and just go and be free. However, when she's finally off I needed to read until the very end.

'The Defiance' definitely had some surprising, shocking, emotional, and heartwarming turns. I was satisfied with the ending even though it ended in an intriguing twist and I'll be waiting to read the third installment!

I gave this book a 5 because honestly I can't remember the last book I read and liked as much, and believe me, I'm stingy with my 5's. I can't say enough good things about this author and these books. I've read many a YA book, some extremely popular, who have nowhere near her mature writing skills she has. I was never caught off guard by an error (I found none), something I doubted to be true, or by cheesy feelings or conversations.
First off, the characters are not only solid, but understandable and relate-able. Unlike some books with characters who have enjoyable yet outlandish traits, she sticks to reality and because of that I buy in to the story all the more. The main character Fennel oozes with strength and maturity, even when she doubts herself. You not only see but can feel her attachment to the people in her life that she loves. I especially enjoyed the development of her relationship with her younger brother Eland and the bond they shared. Because of what Fennel had to experience, her emotional depth and range widened, and so did my empathy for her. I actually shed a few tears at one point because I could so relate to the overwhelming and mind-numbing grief she had to experience. Henley certainly knows how to tap into the emotions of the reader.
Even though the secret about the Scourge and what they really are is out, there was still plenty of the same suspense, dread, shock, and surprise here that the first book so eloquently provided. The plot was thick with the action and I often found myself reading as fast as I could to find out "what happened". For as good as she is with emotions, she doesn't dwell on them and provides plenty of movement and suspense to keep the book flying.
I don't often like the 2nd book in a trilogy because I find that they either tease you too much or offer you something entirely new and unbelievable compared to the first book. Not the case here. She builds upon the foundation of the first book, both with the plot and the characters. There is a sense of wholeness and completeness that makes the heart happy at the end of both books but yet she leaves you with just a tiny ember of curiosity for what's to come. I only wish that every book and movie could end this way.
The only real downside to this book and the first is that I can't get them on Audible and listen whenever I want! But they definitely are books worth re-reading, and oh I certainly will.

Fans of The Scourge, you will not be disappointed with this sequel. The Defiance was thrilling, romantic, and full of surprises. Loved this book!

After the lies of the Groundlings and Lofties' existence were revealed in the previous book, their society starts to unravel in this book. People start to question the truth of what they've been living and that causes the leaders to begin taking drastic measures against Fenn and Peree, who started it all. That leads to betrayal, surprises, and twists that make this book a thrill ride. I was on the edge of my seat the entire way through.

Fenn became a stronger character in this book. She stands up for herself and what she believes in and isn't afraid to go against the grain. Even after all she's been through, she stands strong. She definitely proved herself as a heroine and I came to like her even more.

Peree...
What can I say? I absolutely adore him. He can do no wrong in my eyes. He's just so sweet and adorable and dedicated to protecting his loved ones. I fell for him even more in this book. Not only is he a total sweetheart, but he showed himself to be a strong hero who could defend his own and become a strong leader. He's just perfect.

The romance was so sweet. It's obvious how much Fenn and Peree adore each other and it just put a smile on my face. Love these two together.

I said it when I review book 1 and I have to say it again. The setting was flawless. Especially considering that the narrator is blind, it was doubly impressive. Ms. Henley has a talent for creating setting.

The one thing about this book that I didn't adore is that I didn't connect to the characters and the plot as much as I did in the previous book. I'm not sure why, but it was noticeable. It didn't detract from my enjoyment, but it did bear mentioning.

The plot was well paced. I was hooked the entire way through. There were thrills, surprises, and a cliff hanger ending that has me anxious for the next book. Can't wait to read it!

The Defiance is a wonderful continuation of the Brilliant Darkness series. I absolutely adored it! Fans of book 1, you will not be disappointed. And for those who haven't started this series, you definitely should.
