All's Fair in Love and Magic

I went to the Supernatural Resort for protection—and was immediately claimed by the shifter who owns the place.

Because of what I am, everyone hates me. Humans and supernaturals alike.

But the Resort needs magic like mine to protect it.

So the owner makes me his.

Which backfires, because now even more people want me dead, and we're going through an altered version of heat together.

This place is supposed to be paradise… but it's starting to look like I'm not going to make it out of here alive.

But hey, if I have to die, I might as well do it on the beach, with a drink in my hand and a sexy shifter at my side.

*This is a spicy standalone romance with a happily ever after

Lola is a book lover with a *slight* romance obsession and a passion for love. Especially love between sassy women and huge, growly magical men ;)

When she's not reading or writing up a storm, she's hanging out with her husband and three kids, or baking something sugary that she *probably* shouldn't eat (but will).

DNF @ 15%. No Rating.

I feel like since I've been in such a bad reading rut and nothing has been working for me lately that I'm a lot harsher on books that I would normally? maybe? sit through but at this point my patience is long gone and I'm tired of wasting my time. Even so, I could just tell a few pages in this wasn't going to be for me by the writing style alone. Lola Glass doesn't like using a lot of words and that's fine I guess. But her structuring is terrible. The endless paragraph breaks and short paragraphs and really short sentences is tiresome and juvenile especially when you get moments like this constantly:

Harv blinked once.

Then again.

And a third time.

I gasped.

Arched.

Moaned.

I get dramatic flair but it really loses something when you do it so liberally on every single page. It makes your characters sound like idiotic robots. That and the world building is so confusing and hard to follow. For a Paranormal Romance with witches, vampires, werewolves and shapeshifters, world building is so crucial and a pretty important factor that needs clarity and structure. Explain your rules and limitations and then move on. I lost count how many rules and laws the heroine explained (over and over again) about her witch coven and what she is and isn't capable of and what she's allowed/not allowed to do and I'm pretty sure a few times even contradicted herself. My head was hurting the 10th time she tried to explain things and I was over it. The hero who is a phoenix but he's a hybrid who is also a dragon? It just really felt like the author kept trying to explain the rules of her own world as she went along and wasn't sure herself of what to keep or take out so she just kept adding to it which just made for a confusing soup of words. Every time new information is given it contradicts what was previously stated. Also, the word "assload"? Remove it from your lexicon please Ms. Glass. 🥴 The three times I read it was more than enough.

⭐️4/5 this was such a sweet, fun read!!! sage is a blood witch on the run from her coven after they find out her true identity (blood witches are killed due to their rarity and power). she takes refuge and seeks protection at a secluded, supernatural resort, only to be immediately claimed as a mate by the resort’s owner, liam, who’s a phoenix hybrid (also very rare). their relationship is dangerous and passionate and i was literally hooked the entire book!! i didn’t give 5 stars because i just wanted a littleeee bit more depth in the characters’ connection…..but seriously don’t let that discourage you from reading this- i still loved it!!

𖤐⋆˚࿔⟡ˎˊ˗

🌶️3/5 nothing too taboo or crazy, but it’s good!!! lots of tension……

𖤐⋆˚࿔⟡ˎˊ˗

romantasy/paranormal romance
blood witch x phoenix
enemies to lovers vibes
forced proximity
possessive mmc
heat/mating
age gap
magic
slowish burn vibes/tension
HEA
etc.

𖤐⋆˚࿔⟡ˎˊ˗

i recommend this to anyone who needs more of a light-hearted, spicy, quick romantasy read!!! message me if you want to chat:)

4.5 starsss

ahhhhhhh! I read this with Maeve, and we both agreed it was rlly good! it was light, short (18 chap), airy, and all around just a quick and easy read!!!!

when I first started it, I was a lil bit confused, but once I got a little farther into the book it cleared up a lot

and Liam!!!! ughhhhhhhhhhhhh CHEFS KISSSSSS
he was sweet, and possessive (at times), and js LOVED Sage smm <3

I think that the characters relationship could've held a little bit more depth and sincerity, but it was a great sweet, spicy, romantasy!!!

def recommend to anyone looking for a sweet, easy read!

Yazarı severim aslında ama bu kitabını sevemedim.
Sıkıcıydı, bir olmamışlık vardı bilemiyorum. Konusunu dahi saçma buldum.
Duygu geçişi ilişkilerini de sevemedim.
Belki başkaları sever kitabı ama bana uymadı. Okurken çok sıkıldım.
Kadın karakter çok şımarık ve mantıksızdı.

I adore this author so giving this 2 stars is killing me … but unfortunately no one can hit the mark every time.

This book lacked even the barest connection between the characters and I could not care less about them together. Independently, the characters and the story actually had a lot of potential! I wish the author would’ve leaned into a *slightly* darker story (like her wolf king series) for these two and created a bit of a longer novel so see the relationship bloom. There were also some pretty glaring plot holes that were there simply because the novel was too short to develop something self sustaining. I also am not a fan of the author just telling me things but the characters actions never supporting that: ex. “I’ll kill anyone that would harm you” literally does nothing when there is an active threat in your home like MMMKAAAAYYYYYY sure you will.

The personality of the mmc also didn’t make sense for his role. While I’m so here for an easily embarrassed, emotionally stunted but trying mmc, how is he the leader of a criminal resort? They kept making these nods to the criminals around them and how she needed to prove she was tough and could protect herself and everything else but the mmc had literally ZERO hard characteristics?!?!?!? Again, MMMKAAAAYYYYY.

And I’m sorry, but why tf did the mom not just go with her??? Made zero sense

Anyways, that’s the end of my rant for now. Still gonna read anything and everything this author puts out, but this really missed its mark and I’m so glad it’s over.

It’s a novella; you could read it in one sitting… and I still DNFed it, given how pointless it felt.

Repeated, predictable, convenient and a “tell, not show” kind of book. Even the kinky, smutty parts were boring.

I enjoyed this book. It‘s a short and funny fantasy read with likeable characters and a solid plot. I like the way Lola Glass has woven all her books together (they’re set in the same world). It‘s one of these full circle moments although you can read this books without knowing her other books too.
Sage and Liam are a great couple with good tension and funny banter. Their love story was build up well and I liked them together. The world Lola has created is colourful, interesting and has a lot of unique creatures in it. The pairing of a blood witch and a phoenix is something I‘ve never read about and I ate this up.
Overall this was a good and entertaining read.
And can we talk about the beautiful covers the author got lately for her books? wow!

Paradise Has Never Been So Dangerous... or So Addictive! 🔥🏝️

Lola Glass has done it again! All's Fair in Love and Magic was the perfect mix of romance, magic, danger, and laugh-out-loud humor. I was hooked from the very first chapter and couldn't stop turning the pages.
The tropical supernatural resort made such a fun and unique setting, and the phoenix shifter hero was everything I wanted: fiercely protective, swoon-worthy, and impossible not to love. The romance had just the right balance of sweetness, tension, and steamy moments, while the mystery and constant danger kept me invested the whole way through.
I especially loved the heroine's wit and resilience. Even with everyone seemingly against her, she never lost her spark, and I found myself cheering her on every step of the way.
This story is packed with magical creatures, found family, action, humor, and an irresistible fated mates romance that had me smiling from beginning to end. It was fun, fast-paced, emotional, and exactly the kind of paranormal romance I love to binge.
If you're looking for a magical escape with high stakes, a protective phoenix shifter, plenty of heart, and enough twists to keep you glued to the pages, don't miss this one. Another fantastic five-star read from Lola Glass!

It was totally fine but the amount of injuries and over work and physical issues that happen with this woman that she can just work through, made it really ridiculous.

Plus, I am never a fan of world building that includes body betrayal.

I REALLY hated that he called her by a nickname when she reminded him over and over and over again that her real name was Sage. I thought that maybe the author would explain whether the nickname made sense. It would still not have been my favorite, but it would've been something.

Not only does he never explain the nickname, he never stops using it! Even though she asks them to call her by her real name.

It wasn't romantic. It was annoying. Like the way he didn't respond to her words but she had to trick him into acting the way she wanted.

This wasn't a romance I would want for myself so it wasn't fun to read.

Oh boy did I love this. I had to read this as soon as I saw it was out. And I'm devouring EVERYTHING I can get from Lola Glass.

I don't usually read witch books....do they make them as main characters?? aren't they usually bad or at least shady?? and a phoenix? omg it was hot, pun intended. but its Lola Glass so you don't have to pull my arm.

I loved Liam taking such good care of Sage. and she was fighting it so bad. but of course she couldnt....and they were such a great team. I loved the world building and the main characters.... & The chemistry and the HEA too.

I love a rare shifter and a smart heroine who can hold her own. Sage and Liam are well suited for each other. I loved the magic system in this one - it was really interesting but his heritage still confused me. Also the sheer inexperience of the FMC irked me but it also created opportunity for exploration and discovery 🔥

🌶️🌶️🌶️

I love that Lola is always there for me when I need a bookish jump start.

- Sweet and fluffy paranormal romance. Short and so readable.
- If you like witch x shifter, forced proximity, fated mates and heats
- interesting set up: a blood witch escapes to the Supernatural Resort for protection and becomes the owner's mate. But can he protect her from threats from inside and out?

- A couple plot points are a little thin.
- I probably won't remember much about this in a couple months.

A nothing sandwich

Sage is a witch. Everyone hates witches because, and I paraphrase, “actually no one knows.” Even worse, she’s a blood witch, so the witches in her coven who raised her want to murder her, again for reasons.

Then you have our copy and paste MMC, who doesn’t like jokes or romance or showing personality. I usually enjoy Lola Glass books. They’re quick and fun, but this one totally missed the mark for me.

All's Fair in Love and Magic de Lola Glass

Argumento:

“All's Fair in Love and Magic” is a spicy supernatural romantic fantasy novel by Lola Glass. A perfect read for the summer, it is a true standalone with 247 pages cover-to-cover. It is a light and cozy Witch x Shifter romance read that boils down to a story of two people learning to fall in love when fate intervenes and danger is at every corner at a supernatural beach resort.

Sage is a blood witch on the run. Hiding her abilities for the past 24 years, she’s finally been caught, and now her coven wants her dead. Her only chance for survival lies with the owner of the Supernatural Resort, a home for refugees and fugitives alike. Making a deal to continue protecting the resort in exchange for Sanctuary, Liam, the owner and a one-of-a-kind Phoenix shifter, agrees to her contract with one caveat: she agrees to be his mate. A bond begins to form between them in the form of heat, pushing them together until they seal the mate bond. As danger looms both inside and outside of the resort, will Sage be able to find love in the mate bond with a handsome shifter she barely knows?

Liam is not the normal MMC we see in a Glass book. He’s reserved, quiet, and more blended, almost? He is mindful of Sage’s space and her need to complete tasks. He doesn’t intrude on her space, forcing a cute Pavlov experiment courtesy of Sage. We also see that he is a completely new species from this world, with new powers and more questions. “How was he made?” and “How does this happen?” Glass gives us glimpses of speculation that left me satisfied with my answers.

In terms of spice, I would give “All's Fair” a 🌶🌶🌶🌶.5 on the pepper scale. The heat they have to go through is something else! Starting fairly early and steamy, Liam and Sage are going through it (but I don’t see either of them complaining).

I was ridiculously excited when I realized that this book was in the same universe as “Deceit & Devotion”, “Wildwood”, and “Mate Mountain” (my FAVORITE world in the Glassiverse). It felt like my notes were picking up steam and excitement each time a reference was mentioned until we saw a few of my favorite characters again! While you do not need to read any of the other books to understand this world, I recommend reading the interconnected standalone series anyway. They are: “Deceit & Devotion”, “Wildwood” (this was the first I read, beginning my obsession), “Mate Mountain”, and the “Cub Lake Novellas” (I haven’t read this series yet).

“All's Fair in Love & Magic” hit the spot exactly where I needed it. It’s not heavy, but it’s not without crisis or drama. You realize they fall in love before they do through banter, sarcasm, and learned humor. Although the story has closed on Liam and Sage, it was wonderful to return to this world, and I hope we can visit again soon!.

He needs a Blood Witch and She needs Protection

Another fantastically fun story by Lola Glass; with drama, wonderful characters with sweet chemistry between them, heaps of humor and spice. Set in the same world as "Deceit & Devotion series" (it was great to see the Demon's again, with mention of the Sky brothers as well). Great for a cozy read & I would strongly recommend.

When Sage arrives on the Supernatural Resort she's needing protection from her coven as they've realised she's a blood witch and want her dead. When she arrives she's met with hostility, no one likes a witch (though she's not sure why), but when she meets the owner he tells her she has his protection, but she'll have to mate with him.

Liam is a hybrid and has been trying to keep the island's protections in place for years but he needs help. When Sage arrives he knows she's the one who can help, being a blood witch and his mate. But he doesn't know how it will work as he has no-one to ask, though the dragons have explained how it works for them, he's not a dragon himself. He offers his help though she seems to be cautious to accept.

As Sage is finally able to use her once hidden powers, she starts to work on the wards that protect the island, and she also begins to make friends. The island might be the best new start she could have hoped for, though her mother's not safe with her coven still after her and a group of vampires hate her. Can Liam persuade her to accept the bond so his magic can protect her?

I really enjoyed this one, getting a glimpse of another part of the world we first saw in the " Deceit & Devotion", "Wildwood" and "Mate Mountain" series; and I really hope the Kelpie and Kitsune we meet in this find their romances someday.

Honestly, this is a 1.5 at most, but I feel bad rating it a 1 because it didn’t totally fill me with annoyance/frustration/rage/loathing, so I’m rounding up on here. Fable will reflect a more accurate rating.

I think this author’s books are getting worse the more she writes, not better. These stories are (obviously) not life-changing, but I found a lot of her books super entertaining and actually enjoyed them enough to spend a couple of days earlier this year bingeing a lot of her backlog.

BUT - I DNFd a few of her most recent releases, and the only reason I forced myself to finish this one was because I was simultaneously procrastinating, and not wanting to start a new book and lose sleep if I got sucked in.

The writing style grated on me - all those incredibly short sentences?? I get it if you want to emphasise a point here and there, but she does it CONSTANTLY. It disturbs the flow of the story so much. The climax relating to the external conflict was so disappointing, the stakes didn’t seem high (we were TOLD about all these extreme consequences, but no real drama/action backed that up), and I honestly didn’t understand why those last few scenes played out the way they did. To be fair, there was a lot that didn’t make sense in this book. The relationship “development” (it didn’t feel like it developed much IMO) wasn’t at all believable and didn’t feel genuine. The smutty scenes were kinda detailed/graphic, but extreeeeeemely rushed for the most part - I think the last smutty scene was kinda “normal” in length. The world-building was…weird? Random lore was just thrown around throughout the book as if nothing was plotted beforehand and she was just vibing her way through this.

These synopses always scream “I’m the fun kind of trash, binge me,” but I think I need to give up reading anything more from this author.

As usual Ms. Glass writes about an interesting magical world including an assortment of mythical and supernatural creatures. This book felt all over the place with the slow pace and a bit of a lack of world development. There was a lot of information but it was not laid out in an interesting or methodical way which made things kind of confusing. I think there were almost too many different kinds of creatures thrown into the mix between witches, shifters, and vampires.

Sage is a blood witch on the run and Liam is a hybrid shifter who needs a blood witch to mate with him, to be able to keep the magical wards around the supernatural resort that he runs. The resort is both a vacation haven to some as well as a permanent home to others.

There were things that I liked here including basically liking the FMC and MMC. I liked that they both had a sense of duty and responsibility to keep others safe. They did have a connection but I do not feel like there was as much passion and emotion which is usually the norm in Ms. Glass’ books. So it was hard for me to connect or care a lot about what was going on. There were also no very memorable or special side characters whether friend or foe. Very generic and no one that really stood out.

This was not terrible and there were some amusing moments. But overall this could have used something more. I am just not sure what that would be. I do generally love the author’s books especially her more recent series, so one kind of boring book will not deter me from reading more.

As a big paranormal romance fan, I typically prefer series that follow multiple characters through a connected universe. So it’s a hard sell for me to read a standalone. But I love Lola Glass, so I had to give this one a shot since I know she always delivers.

If you’ve read anything from Lola‘s Deceit & Devotion, Wildwood or Mate Mountain series, then buckle up for a new adventure! As a someone who fell for Lola through those series, this book is everything I loved about them!

Now let’s talk about the story! Sage finds herself on the run from her murderous coven and lands herself right in the arms of Liam - the owner of the resort that she is seeking asylum at. Though I am sad we didn’t learn more about her “bug” the story takes off at a rapid pace from her arrival at the resort. Even though it moves quickly, there’s only a few place s that it feels rushed, but because the rest of the story is so well done I couldn’t name them if I tried.

While there is some initial miscommunication between them Sage and Liam work it out beautifully and come to see they’re more on the same page than they realize.

Liam’s “touch her and die vibes” are phenomenal. The way their romance blooms from a partnership to devotional trust is so moving. And the heat is hot HOT HOTTTT! Liam listens and learns and we love him for it!!

5/5 Stars!
4/5 Peppers!
Tropes: fated mates, forced proximity.
