Brian Michael Bendis

A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.

Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.

Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.

Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.

Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.

Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.

He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.

It's normal teenage stuff for Miles, whether to tell your girlfriend that you're a superhero; deal with actually fair demands for his webspinners; looking to counteract the actions of a pair of spider-themed robbers; and the small matter of the return of Green Goblin!

Somehow these disparate story parts are brought together alongside a super shock guest character to create a emotional rollercoaster of very good story! Collecting Ultimate Spider-Man #200 and Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man #1-5 yet more superlative Bendis storytelling merits a strong Four Star, 9 out of 12.

Miles Morales is the only good thing about the Ultimate universe.
And while that's my personal opinion, I think there are a lot of people out there who will agree with me.

description

I haven't kept up with him the way I wanted to, mainly because I hate the universe he lives in, but after reading this, I've renewed my vow to find all of the volumes that I've missed.
I love this kid!
I wanna squish him, and hug him, and then make sure he eats a sandwich or something before he goes out on patrol...
Adorable!

Anyway, this volume opens with all of Peter's family & friends gathering together to remember him on the anniversary of his death. It was sort of hokey, but (between you and me) I teared up a little anyway.
Everyone sort of sits around and imagines what life would have been like if Peter were still alive. It wasn't crazy-amazing, but it was sweet.

description

Waring: Spoilerish Stuff Ahead
I'm not going into plot details, but for those of you who don't want to know anything before you read, turn back now.

description

The big thing that has garnered quite a few complaints from other reviewers? Peter Parker shows up in this sucker. Yes, the dead one.

description

I agree that this is Miles' title, and I certainly don't want to see Peter take that away from him.
But.
If this really is Parker, and not some clone?
Well, Bendis knows how to write him, and I would enjoy having Pete back among the living. Just because I love Miles, doesn't mean I don't miss the original Ultimate Spider-man. Miles is such an incredible character that I don't want to see him get shoved out, but I doubt that will happen as long as Bendis is holding the reigns. Miles is his creation, and he's done an incredible job bringing this new character into the Marvel universe. I can't see him (or Marvel) pushing such a popular character out of the spotlight.
Unless they're stupid.
Pleasepleaseplease don't be stupid...

description

I think it's going to make for an interesting storyline, and I honestly can't wait to get my hands on more of this stuff.
But Pete isn't the only one who makes a reappearance.
Norman is Back!

description

The team-up between Spidey & Spidey could have been a total cheese-fest, especially since they had their smash-up at the same place the Goblin originally killed off Parker. But somehow (and I credit Bendis again) it was a pretty good Big Battle between the Green Goblin and the Spider-boys.

There's also some romancey stuff going on with Miles girlfriend. Man, I really wish I'd kept up with this title, because I feel like I'm missing a bunch of important backstory on quite a few things, and his relationship with this cute little chick is one of those things.
Ugh! Whole lotta unanswered questions, and I NEED to know all of them!

description

There's another story about two other guys dressing up like Spider-men and committing crimes for someone. It doesn't tell you who the Big Bad is in this volume, but I'm interested to see what this plotline is all about. However, it was the least interesting part of the overall story for me.

description

It ends on a cliffhanger with J. Jonah Jameson & Norman Osborn, but I'm not going to spoil the details.
Read it!

Weeellll, it had to happen eventually didn’t it? Brian Bendis’ surprisingly-consistent run of near-faultless Miles Morales comics comes to an end with this newly-renumbered title launched in the wake of the Ultimates event, Cataclysm. Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man, Volume 1: Revival is unfortunately pretty crap.

I’ll probably never bother with Cataclysm as it sounds like generic event garbage (Galactus rocks up, he hungers, etc. etc. whatevs) so it’s irritating that I missed a noteworthy development in Miles’ story: his dad apparently found out that he’s Spider-Man and they’ve fallen out. Still, a flashback scene is included to catch everyone up so it’s not so bad. Man, I hate events/crossovers so much!

What’s disappointingly obvious with this relaunched series is that Bendis seems to have run out of ideas and/or a purposeful direction for the character. There’s some tedious soap opera-y crap where Miles wonders whether he should tell his girlfriend Katie Bishop that he’s Spidey (yaaaawwwwnnnn!)… and nothing else. Booo!

Instead Bendis falls back on superhero clichés, resurrecting Ultimate Peter Parker from the dead somehow AND bringing Norman Osborn back to vamp some more as the ‘roided out Green Gobbo. Oh and a couple of Peter Parker clones (!!!) are dressing up as robo-Spider-Men and causing trouble for some reason. Could not. Care. Less. I read this series for Miles – if I wanted ‘90s haircut Peter and his bullshit I’d read his Ultimate Spider-Man books!

The Ultimate Spider-Man #200 issue that opens the book wasn’t bad. A bunch of characters assemble for the second anniversary of Peter’s death and there are some cute moments like Gwen Stacy smooching Ganke and Ganke and Miles’ banter. The accompanying splash pages by guest artists Mark Bagley, Sara Pichelli, Mark Brooks and David Lafuente looked splendiferous too. But it’s a largely pointless, overly sentimental and unnecessary comic with Bendis relying on still more soap opera-y rubbish to fill the pages with.

David Marquez’s art looks great as usual but the flair Bendis normally brings to his Miles Morales comics is noticeably absent in Revival. All good things, eh? Ah well, at least the pre-Cataclysm stuff was solid.

Miles is back with the first of many rebooted series. You should go back and read the 3 part Cataclysm: Miles Morales series. It's mostly tangentially connected to the event but that's where Miles tells his dad that he's Spider-Man and it doesn't go well at all. It's the whole impetus for why this starts the way it does with Miles living with Ganke's family outside of school. You also need to think of these 12 issues as one big story because this volume ends in the middle of it.

The book begins with a really nice issue #200. It's been 2 years since Peter Parker's death and his friends and family are reflecting back on his life. It's sweet. Then the new series starts up and there's two thieves running around that for some escapable reason people think are Spider-Men. Then Peter Parker returns although I'm not sold it's Peter Parker. No way does Bendis legit bring Parker back to the Ultimate universe. And to bring things full circle the Green Goblin returns as well. Egads, that cliffhanger though! Bendis just really crushes Ultimate Spider-Man no matter if it's about Peter or Miles.

Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man starts off normal. Two years have passed since Peter Parker died and Aunt May is holding a memorial service at the house in his honor. Everyone comes, reminisces, and talks about what life would be like if Peter was still alive...and then things go crazy
description

description

Yeah that's Peter and yeah he's alive hence the title Revival. He's not the only one who's alive who should be dead.
description

The volume felt rushed and all it did was open up tons of questions. I have to say I'm disappointed they brought Peter back especially. When a character has a heroic death and he's replaced by a new character it just feels wrong to have him come back to life. It cheapens his ultimate sacrifice especially since now he's stepping on Miles' toes. I'm skeptical about this change in events as I was hoping Miles would be the only Spider-Man in the Ultimate Universe at this point.

I feel like the way this story resolves will probably have an affect on how I feel about this volume. Because Peter is back, and in costume, and I still don't know how or why or if it's even really him, and not an imposter or a clone or a Skrull or... I admit that my heart skipped a beat when he showed up in the book. I loved Ultimate Peter, and I did miss him... But I kind of feel like he should have been left in peace, and that Miles should have been allowed to take sole control of his book. Because so much of Miles's tenure as Spider-Man has been spent dealing with Peter and his death. And that isn't Peter's name on the cover.

I'm trying to have faith that this will be resolved in a way that makes sense, that isn't insulting to me as a reader or to the Peter that I remember and love. And I love Miles, and I want to love this. But when it gets to the point where Peter and Miles are fighting the Goblin (actual Norman Osborn Goblin, because he's back, too) in the exact same yard where Peter died... It's just so much that's already been done. And then it has to get covered by a news chopper, of course, so of course Aunt May ends up seeing it, and I kind of hated Bendis for doing that to her, even though I know she's a fictional character.

But it takes a pretty good writer to get that sort of emotional reaction from me. So much is good that I'm not going to rage quit, not yet, and I'm still hoping for an explanation, for something that makes sense. Sooner rather than later would be nice.

I like Miles! Unfortunately for me, this little run is way too short and skimpy. I read about Parker's death, I read Superior Spider-Man, but I missed the whole Ultimates run and Galacticus, so just trying to get to know Miles for the first time here is not exactly the smartest thing I could have done. *sigh*

Still, I love the spoilers. The whole passing-the-mantle thing. Primo. The art's good. The story is pretty decent. I love what's happened to Green Goblin. I can chew the cud on this one for a bit.

So how do I like Miles? Well, I wasn't too worried that I would think that he was a PC stand-in for Pete, because I've read too many reviews from ppl I trust that set me straight on it. He's a cool dude. And I agree. I just wish the run could get away with using the actual #*%&%$# words. :)

Very solid, but something about it made me wish there was something deeper and developed about it. Of course, I had the same complaint with Bendis's whole Ultimate Spidey run. Quick, polished, and always pretty light. Except, of course, when he killed off Pete. But fortunately for us, we live in a comic world where death isn't really permanent, so yay!

This was so good omg!

So we have the 2nd death anniversary of Pete and we see his close ones remembering him and like saying what he would be like if he was alive and it was cute and the big presence in the bushes and then Miles dealing with his gf Katie bishop and well the drama of telling her his secret identity or not but then Osborn, GG comes back and well Miles has to fight him.. because the thing is this universe's Pete is back too and it changes everything, we see the two of them meet and the drama and whether he is real or not and then teaming up to fight Osborn and Pete announcing to the world he is back and how it changes everything..

This was such an epic issue and Bendis really goes all out when writing Norman and just showing how dangerous he is and he doesn't hold back and I freaking love it plus the big return is handled so well and there is tension and drama sure which the writer excels at and especially the big fight he is gearing up for that will be epic to read next volume and the art by Marquez here omg each page is a joy to read so I definitely recommend this big time!!

This was good but all it really seemed to do was raise questions about Ultimate Peter Parker and then not answer them within this volume. Curse you, Bendis, for making me read more of your comics!

It was also pretty cool to see Miles take on Norman Osborn.

If you know me you know that I relish every opportunity to bash Bendis but (and I'm just shocked as you are here) in this case I can't commence the bashing.

This was Bendis at his best. I can finally understand why people enjoy Bendis' writing and why they defend him. He shone in this. He wrote sorrows superbly and wove character dynamics expertly. There were only one or two times when I thought Miles' dialogue came off as a bit strange and try-hard, like a 40 year old man trying to figure out what a cool kid says. Other than that, you could tell that these were characters that Bendis wrote well because he knew them very well. And reading this made me wish Bendis had stuck to Marvel because he clearly does better with it than he does with DC.

Whilst I did jump into this with literally zero prior knowledge of the ongoing storyline and of Marvel characters, I was surprised to find that I understood it all and, even further, actually enjoyed it! The action was exciting and well-balanced with the character growth. The cameos from other marvel characters probably would've made me squeal if I knew who they all were, still, the coolness of the moment of their get-together wasn't lost on me.

One thing I would nitpick on is that there was a classic Bendis move here (one he doesn't lose in his move to DC, he employs it a lot in Young Justice, Vol. 1: Gemworld too) as he injected the majority of the comic with mystery and confusion, having multiple characters ask the same question with no hint of an answer on the horizon. Then he dragged out that question riiiight until the very end and, of course, left it on a cliffhanger. I've seen him do this before so the moment I noticed it I went "Aha! Bendis is doing a Bendis right now" but it was quite tame here in comparison to other times he's done it, so this is only a small nitpick from me.

All in all, a surprisingly great comic. Exciting, intriguing, and inviting me to read more, which I may do in the future!

I am going to start with what might appear as a spoiler for non-comic book readers, but no surprise to those that have been reading them for the longest time: SPIDER MAN IS NOT DEAD, MILES MORALES IS SIMPLY ANOTHER VERSION OF SPIDER MAN FOR THE ULTIMATE UNIVERSE, WHICH IS OFTEN TIMES NOT THE BEST COMIC UNIVERSE LINE, THEREFORE, DO NOT WORRY, PETER PARKER WILL RETURN.
Now with that put of the way, Miles Morales is an adorable little twit! I doubt he will be Peter Parker material (only he can fill the role), but it is nice to see some form of representation that is not based off of stereotypes (unlike the comics from the Golden Age to Silver Age). He is a nice replacement, and much like Kamala Khan's Ms Marvel, he will be a great add to the mainstream instead of remaining in one of the most useless universes in Marvel.

He is my definition of "smol son."

I love Miles Morales as a character, but I really wish we could just follow his story. In this volume, it appears that the previous Ultimate Spider-Man, Peter Parker, is alive and well and back from the grave. Along with his nemesis, Norman Osborn/Green Goblin. Really? Do we have to keep re-hashing this stuff over and over? I'd much rather read about Miles' own, original adventures. And there's enough of that in here to warrant a four-star rating. But I want more. I sure hope this stupid Secret War event stuff that's coming down the pike doesn't meant the end of Miles Morales, because that would be a real shame.

On one hand the Green Goblin returns, which is great. We also get Peter Parker returning after a near perfect death so...

It's a shame. Because the memorial for Peter in the first issue, issue 200, is excellent. It showcases who Peter was and who he could have been. It's sweet, well done, and ruined almost completely by him hiding in the bushes watching everyone at his memorial.

We then get his return and despite me not liking the fact he returned, the actual banter between him and Miles is pretty great. Green Goblin is also a treat, since he's always so fun to watch wrack havoc on innocent people. And watching two Spider-Man go head to head with him is excellent stuff.

Overall, it's good. It's even great at points. But still don't like they brought back Peter. A 3.5 out of 5.

I really like this series but I’m really tired of bringing back characters from the dead storyline’s. They’re boring and Bendis loves to spend 5 issues milking that plot and it sucks. I can’t believe it’s still not resolved in this trade, it should be rated lower than that but it’s still really good other than the glaring plot issue. Which doesn’t really make sense now that I’m saying it but what I mean is that the characters ive spent 200+ issues with are terrific, I love catching up with them and I love Miles as a character. There’s so many more interesting things to do with him than just bring back peter Parker for no reason that I can see yet. It better be an amazing resolve.

Reading this reminded me how much I love Miles Morales - it was an amazing showcase of both Miles’ personality and his unique Spiderman abilities.
The overarching plot tying this story together was engaging, focusing on Peter Parker, presumed dead, revealing he’s alive alongside his supposed killer Norman Osborn.
Osborn has one of the coldest entrances i’ve seen and the Ultimate Green Goblin design is incredible.
Some loose ends require resolving such as the entertaining “Spider-man Twins” and Miles and Katie’s relationship post confession but they have all been left at a satisfying yet enticing point fulfilling their intended purpose of encouraging me to pick up the second volume.

Overall, a pretty good volume, but they really like dragging out the Green Goblin fight, don't they? It lasted like, 4 issues. and in the last one it was "He's finally down! Oh .... he's back up (again??) Oh, he's down again.... what about Miles' dad?" Really frustrating.
I think I started on the wrong volume as well, I meant to start at 2011, but oh well.
Also, Miles just tells Katie Bishop that he's Spider-Man after, what, a month of dating? Didn't Peter wait, I don't know, a LOT longer to tell Mary Jane..... think about your priorities Miles.
I know I'm critiquing this a lot, but I did enjoy this volumes. If I were to give a word of advice to a new reader.... start on the right year. Do as I say, not as I do.

Wow, this is how you start a series!

Miles has been a really good book from the get go, there have been some minor bumps with his character development due to his involvement in some events but overall this series has been wonderful. So, with Cataclysm out of the way what's the new status quo for Miles and how does it read? Pretty fantastic.

World: I like Marquez's art, the characters are gorgeous and the framing is fun, but I still don't see the motion that I want to see with a Spidey book, maybe I'm just picky and coming from Green Lantern to this, I don't sense the motion and the power. The colors my God they are good though, magnificent. The world building is wonderful and Bendis to the core. There are new pieces of the world that unfold to the reader at a wonderful pace and it keeps the reader reading. The call backs to the past events of Peter and both Miles is great. This is completely a Miles book now but the pieces of Peter that are here are so fused in well that it does not make it less of a Miles book, it makes it something even more special.

Story: I loved it, the story was paced wonderfully. After the events of Cataclysm I wanted things to calm down and have Miles character building time and for the most part that's the case. Of course that would not last but the pieces here to distract me from that are wonderful. I Norman stuff is great as is the Peter stuff. I'm not even going to go into the Kate stuff cause that's another piece of awesome. There is enough story here to be a fulfilling arc but also so many new mysteries and unanswered questions that beg to be answered. Bendis has me hook line and sinker.

Characters: This is the heart of the story and where Bendis is at his best. The character development for Miles is great, not only did we just see him deal with a huge event and playing a part of a team and a somewhat leader but not we get to slow things down also and deal with him and Kate. It's a wonderful relationship, sure there has not been a lot of time to develop it yet, but Marquez's art has been able to convey the deep relationship they have. With the new development in their relationship it should be fun. Kate is a wonderful different character than Gwen and MJ and I look forward to seeing where this goes. The Norman stuff was also great, he's a force of nature and his presence brings so much to the book. Of course we have to talk about Peter but I don't even want to say anything without spoilers so just trust me, it's good. Characters are wonderful in the series ALL of them JJJ, Gwen, MJ, May, Ganke...EVERYONE.

This book is great, I'm a fan of Bendis from Powers and I just find his writing to be absolutely wonderful and this book proves that.

Onward to the next book!

Miles Morales has my heart. He is a superb character! Bendis did a great job bringing Miles to life in this volume. I had never read anything with Miles Morales before. Honestly, I was a little afraid to. I only knew Peter Parker as Spider-Man and have long gotten past that rigidity since the Spider-Verse arc and the Superior Spider-Man arc. Finally, I decided to give good ole' Ultimate Spider-Man a try, and I regret not jumping on sooner.

This is not the first official volume that features Miles, but it was the first one I could get my hands on. Now, I want to go back and read all the previous volumes that have his backstory. Ideally, I plan on getting my hands on the Ultimate Spider-Man collections. The first volume looking like this...

However, just because I did not know all of Miles' backstory did not hinder me from enjoying this. Like I said, Bendis did a great job bringing Miles into his own, without being a part of a team. Here he is the Spider-Man, and therefore gets the whole, "With great power comes great responsibility." shtick thrust upon him.

There is a great blend between action and personal dramas many of these young superheroes are plagued with. And I eat up those youthful problems, involving parents, lovers, friends etc. It makes the heroes more genuine and relate-able in my opinion.

My consensus is that if you haven't given Ultimate Spider-Man a try, maybe because you love Peter Parker and don't want anyone to take his place, just try it. If you hate it, then don't keep reading. But, if you love it like I did, then you will be very happy you gave this book a try.

Go Miles!

Team Up!!!

Miles' dad knows who he is now? What the what? That seems like...a Bendis move. Create some major drama - not like, "Did you see what Bobby said to Kitty? And how she ran crying to the music room? Ooh I hate him" - with exactly the worst things that could happen in the hero's life, then keep taking a close-up look at how they're *not* dealing well with it.

Plus bring back one of their worst villains and some surprise guests and make sure they're good and wound up for any further shocks. Yeah, that's good stuff man. Why don't you sever an arm too, just for good measure? Oh wait, this is a Marvel book, not DC.

The experience of reading this book brings many mild emotions:
- slight shock to see Osborn back in action - where did they dig him up? How're they gonna explain his revival? But he's an excellent villain, and I don't care what version of power set and personality they're using. 21st-century Gobbie is groovy.
- warm squishy feelings watching the interpersonal relationships among the good guys - Bendis signature, basically expected at this point, but one of the reasons I always look forward to reading any of his books.
- anticipation of the coming Secret War - cool to see occasional signs of the apocalypse, fun to know I'll be part of it once it's all done and submitted to Marvel Unlimited (so, roughly an eternity from now)

Issue 200: exactly what I've come to expect from Bendis when he's celebrating a (dead) character. Funny, melancholy, surprising, and in no way forced (though perhaps a series of odd coincidences).

There is very little reason that this is a new volume, it simply carries on the Ultimate Spider-Man story under a new title. In the Ultimate Universe, a sort of parallel world to the main Marvel Continuity, Peter Parker died fighting the Green Goblin and teenager Miles Morales took over the mantle.

At least, that is what everyone thought. In this volume both Peter Parker and the Green Goblin have reappeared. Whether it is genuinely them or not remains to be seen. Whilst this certainly ramps up the tension, making Miles really have to show his worth as Spider-Man, it is quite frustrating. This is after all the Ultimate Universe where the dead are supposed to stay dead and besides, bringing back old characters feels like lazy storytelling.

It also feels that this is full of Peter Parker characters and the newer Miles Morales characters are sidelined a little. I feel more than ever that Miles Morales would work better in a universe where Peter Parker had never been Spider-Man.

The two best things about this volume: Miles having to really prove himself as Spider-Man & having to agonise over whether to tell his new girlfriend he is Spider-Man.

Miles Morales fans will still like this and I really hope the next volume improves on this story. You get the feeling this volume is just the beginning so fingers crossed Volume 2 is better.

Ultimate Spider-man continues to be quite simply amazing. This book is doing what most comic series wish they could do. Marquez's artwork is great as well. I think Miles Morales is an incredible character and his supporting cast is great as well. Each issue leaves the reader with cliffhanger after cliffhanger. The biggest mystery in this volume is the return of Norman Osborn and the mysterious reappearance of Peter Parker. Bendis is indeed having to much fun with this book. This book also happens to be a good jump on point for new readers. This book is the best comic book on the stands right now, period. I am looking forward to the next volume.
