"Her voice echoes back to me one last time as my severed heart beats soundly for the first time in years. Even if it remains in pieces."
I have been waiting to learn more about Tyler since Flock and even more so wanted to know more about his and Delphine's story. Kate did just that giving us their story and so much more than I was hoping for. I was sure that I was ready for it but I wasn't not even a little bit. It was beautifully heartbreaking and ripped my heart to pieces in the best way.
Severed Heart is the second book in the Ravenhood Legacy series. This book has many heavy topics, please check the trigger warnings. Kate wove this military romance that is a reverse age gap (she is 12 years his senior) with ptsd, depression, alcoholism, abuse (sexual, mental, neglect, etc.) together taking her time and handling it with the utmost care that is needed. There is her typical angst that she does oh so good. This isn't just a story of all of these things but it is a love story as well as a healing journey and the time is taken to get there. Buckle up for an emotional ride where you will feel it all in Kate's fashion.
When Tyler was a teenage boy he found comfort in a woman, Delphine who shared many of the same scars. She became determined to help shape the warrior within him that would also alter his heart forever. The loss of that love redefined his destiny.
Tyler Jennings the man that you are! This man had many battles of his own from his family life and serving in the military. He has many battles that he takes on alone and others that he shares with his chosen brothers while others he only shares with Delphine. He is one to put aside his struggles, pain, and suffering to try and help others. He is so compassionate and wears his heart on his sleeve showing his raw emotions and vulnerability. One of my favorite things about him is that he loves fully and out loud and doesn't give a damn. I fell hard for Tyler and just love him endlessly. I could honestly go on and on but don't want to delve too much into him as you just need to see for yourself just how good he truly is.
“The only way you’re going to find peace is by being brave enough to live again.”
Delphine is messy, complex, brutal at times, and I freaking love her so much. She has every right to be this way for everything that she has endured throughout her lifetime. She has suffered from many different types of abuse, battled depression, ptsd, and so much trauma. You know though my girl is strong. She is a true warrior who is filled with so much knowledge that she shares with those closest to her. I love how brash she is and tells it like it is whatever is on her mind. She often had me laughing so hard with her comments. She has moved up the ranks to being one of my favorite FMCs. Her story is heavy and I was eating up all the crumbs while falling in love with her more and more every turn of the page. I will fight and stand up for her always!
"More judgment from another boy who is playing a man."
Tyler and Delphine slipped their way straight into my heart. They have become one of my favorite couples. The way that they ever so slowly built a friendship at first helping each other through their hurt and pain to Delphine training Tyler with her knowledge and becoming each other's best friends. I loved how Tyler took his time with Delphine having patience with her despite her lifelong trauma that sometimes had them taking a few steps backwards but he was resilient and pushed her exactly where she needed it in a way that was just enough to gain her trust due to her lifelong trauma but he was resilient and pushing her where she needed it and just enough. His time and patience gave them a deep friendship that slowly had them falling in love. She was fearful as she had every right to be but they got there until she pushed him away. During their time apart though for the long eight years, there was yearning and longing for one another that love never faltered for either of them. Oh the tension and angst between them was sizzling and I was here for it. Their love is real and raw, it's brutal at times with two soldiers fighting for each other and against each other at times but always coming back to that place of home. It may have been messy at times and hard but it is so beautiful watching them fight together and for one another falling deeply in love day after day.
“I fell in love with the woman you gave me glimpses of. The woman who still had life inside her, but I also fell in love with the woman who was in so much pain that she drowned herself inside it because I felt that same pain every day. My soul searching right along with yours.”
Another masterpiece written by the queen herself! Kate has a way with words that makes me feel EVERY single emotion. I didn’t just feel it, I was living it. There were many times that I was reading through my tears and in the next laughing aloud. I knew what was going to happen in the end and nothing still could have prepared me for what came. Those last few chapters though gutted me, ripping my heart out and shredding it to pieces leaving me an utter mess shaking and sobbing up until the last sentence. Do yourself a favor and read their love story. I promise it doesn't disappoint. I will be impatiently waiting for Tyler's next book, it simply can't come fast enough.
