Children's Book: The Prickly Porcupine This picture book is with illustrations and is intended for little ones from 2-5 as well as independent reading for children 6-8 years.
I've been giving a lot of low ratings to free Kindle picture books lately. I just want to clarify somewhere (I'm choosing here) that these ratings are based on the writing and not on the illustrations. I've seen several awesome artwork in children's books lately.
The moral of the story is good. However the pictures don't always match the story. The porcupine disobeyed mom to help the badger instead of telling her he was in trouble. Not a great message for kids to hear.
“The Prickly Porcupine” by Melinda Smart is a book a porcupine named Penny who does not have any friends. She feels very lonely because she doesn’t have any friends and tries to make up friends for herself but is unsuccessful. One day it begins to snow and Penny is inside feeling sad and lonely when she sees a badger outside. She notices that it is a badger who is usually very smart and careful but is struggling because he is stuck inside something. She debates with herself about whether or not she should go help him and finally decides to go. She uses her quills to make a path in the snow and she finds that he is caught in a trap. She uses her quills again to cut the trap and free the badger. The badger admits that he used to make fun of Penny for her quills but now he sees how important they are and they become friends.
The main theme of “The Prickly Porcupine” is that we should always help those who are in need, despite what they have done to us in the past. If we do this, it will probably benefit us in the end. This is an important lesson for children to learn, and it is a very difficult lesson to teach them. One of the most basic human emotions is revenge and children are very likely to act on revenge. Although the child reading this book may not immediately learn that they should be kind to those who are not kind to them, this book can help them to someday come to that understanding.
One thing that I did not like about the book was the placement of the text. The text was always placed in the same place; at the center top of the page. No matter what was in the background, the text was always in the same spot. This made it difficult to read occasionally because the background would be changing color from blue to green or even brown and it was difficult to tell the text from the changing background. It also made the text cover up the illustrations on some pages. The text felt like it didn’t belong in the book and it didn’t help the story to flow at all.
Would not buy it and can't figure out how to remove it from my kindle, and am very frustrated I have to write all of this just to get out of this page!!!
