At 30, Paula, a technician at a radio station, feels a bit ridiculous for having a big crush on Dr. Christine Graham, host of the late-night radio show The Midnight Couch. Every night when midnight approaches, she vows that this will be the day when she asks Christine on a date—only to chicken out every time. But when Christine hosts a special show about revealing secret love on Valentine’s Day, Paula suddenly finds herself on The Midnight Couch.
Jae is the author of twenty-six award-winning romances between women. She lives in the sunniest city of Germany, near the French and Swiss borders. The writing bug bit her at the age of eleven.
She used to work as a psychologist but gave up her day job in 2013 to become a full-time writer and a part-time editor. As far as she’s concerned, it’s the best job in the world.
When she’s not writing, she is an avid reader of sapphic books, indulges her ice cream and office supply addictions, and watches way too many crime shows.
The Midnight Couch is so romantic and adorable!! I couldn't help but smile at the ending, which is good, of course, since we can always use more smiles in this world of ours! It's short, but the sweetness more than makes up for it! :)
A short story by Jae, one of my favorite authors. About Dr. Christine Graham, a psychologist, and host of a late-night radio show, and Paula, a technician at the radio station. Despite my arrangement there, this is from Paula's point of view, and her lust for the good doctor.
This is another of those stories I picked up free then took a long while to read. See, I did say that characteristic even occurred with authors I've read before's work. Not sure when I picked this work up, though it is possible I got it Feb. 2017.
Christine, it'd appear, is Scottish. Or, at least, she has a 'slight Scottish lilt'. She's also 5 feet tall, but I didn't mean to go into 'describe' mode. I just wanted to note the Scottish part.
Paula, as noted, lusts for Christine, but cannot get her mouth to form words that would convey her interest (like, say, asking her out), despite many many opportunities to do so. Including massive chances put forth by Christine to give Paula openings (course Christine could ask but . . .).
Cute story. Passed the time. Too bad it ended when it did and I have no more Paula and Christine to read (I assume, another short story I'd read by Jae turned out to be had later been expanded to book length, though I don't recall any books that involve these characters).
Paula is the competent, handy radio technician at a regional radio station; Dr. Christine Graham is the popular late-night radio show host. The former has a mega crush on the latter, but suffers from the standard set of crippling "asking someone out" fears. Is Dr Graham into ladies? Would asking her out make their friendship weird? These questions have locked poor Paula in a loop; she has been constantly on the verge of asking for three years but has chickened out every time. It's really all very troublesome.
Happily/unhappily, Dr Christine has plans for her show on Valentine's Day; a special feature on how to deal with secret or unrequited love. Is this Paula's chance?
I actually quite liked that. It takes two to tango, right? And this way was the very best possible to soothe fears on both sides.
I agree with other reviewers when they say this is very short - however it doesn't overstay its welcome. It says everything it needs to, and then gracefully departs; especially suitable to someone who wants a quick, pleasant read before bedtime. Very nice indeed.
It's good but I'd love this short story were a novel instead .. To have time to know better the characters and see how they manage to build their relationship ...
What a nice sweet story of uncertainty. I like stories were the main characters self-talk and process feelings and what to do next. Short, yet interesting and engaging.
Left me smiling This is such a fun and lovely romance! It was not dark but not too light either. I have really grown to love Jae's stories because they are just right. Midnight Couch was not too long as to take up days worth of reading but not too short that you feel like it needed more. It was a perfect book for waiting in Dr. offices or in line at the post office. You could shut it down for a bit without that sense of impending dread. Then when you go back to it you get swallowed up by the characters and the scene like you were never away. Jae often makes me smile, just goofy little grins, and this time was no different. You can never go wrong with Jae!
It was a really sweet story. My only problem with it was that it ended too soon. So do I hope, that it will be extended into a novel in the future, like The Morning After has been extended into Departure from the Script? Hell, yes! :)
The characters were brought to life so well, I forgot that I was reading a short story. I was really disappointed when I finished the book, I was so invested!
This is a super cute short story. Even with a limited number of pages Jae manages to hook us into the characters and give us immediate chemistry between them. I'd love to see Paula and Christine appear in more stories. Worth the read.
Very very good!!! I would have eagerly read more!!! I've really enjoyed storyline, I loved both characters, especially Christine even is she's not the one we got to know the best, but I loved them both. This story had me smiling by myself more than once. I would really love to see a cameo of those two as an actual couple in another novel. Very great short story. Only problem with it: it is a short story. More!!!! lol
4 stars. This was incredibly sweet and wholesome. I adored it. Paula has such a crush on her coworker, Christine and she’s adorable. She tries to work up the courage to ask her out but keeps chickening out and she calls in to Christine’s radio show for advice. I loved it. Very quick and adorable read with likable characters. It definitely left me wanting more.
Another absolutely wonderful book from Jae. I enjoyed this short story tremendously, but I can’t help hoping for a continuation of it. I’d love to see where Jae can take Paula and Christine, although it is unlikely that it will happen. Nonetheless, this brought a smile to my lips!
