Serai Morgan is a 22-year-old culinary student, single mother, and survivor of life’s hardest hits. Juggling school, a demanding restaurant job, and raising her autistic daughter with little support, Serai’s been overlooked, underestimated, and pushed to her breaking point. The one thing she refuses to do is fold.
When she crosses paths with Onyx—an Atlanta street king turned restaurateur with power, respect, and secrets of his own—the last thing she expects is a man who sees her. Not just her beauty, but her hustle, her pain, her heart. He offers her a job at his elite five-star restaurant, but what starts as mentorship soon simmers into something deeper. Forbidden even.
Caught between her growing feelings and the chaos of her past, Serai is thrown into survival mode when her daughter’s deadbeat father resurfaces with dangerous intentions. As the streets close in and loyalties are tested, Onyx is forced to choose between protecting his empire or protecting the woman and child who’ve quietly claimed his heart.
I really enjoyed Onyx! For a short read, this book packed in a lot—emotion, tension, and real-life grit. Serai’s journey as a single mom trying to build a better life for her daughter felt so authentic. You could feel her exhaustion, her determination, and her quiet strength on every page.
And then there’s Onyx… whew. Street-smart, smooth, and surprisingly soft when it counts. His dynamic with Serai felt natural, and the way he stepped in with her daughter? Melted me.
What I loved most is that this wasn’t just a romance—it was about growth, second chances, and showing up for the people who matter. It was short, but it didn’t feel rushed. Everything was intentional and hit just right.
If you’re into urban romance with a touch of hood love, real stakes, and characters you’ll root for, I’d definitely recommend this one.
ARC Read. This romance developed so realistically. Anyone can picture themselves in these roles. Serai is me. Minus the happy ending. The struggle, together with her mother, did an outstanding job raising her daughter with her challenges. Onyx was a perfect gentleman upon introduction and throughout. Sorry he put up with his snobby girlfriend for the time he did. He deserved better a long time ago.
Fate did what it's supposed to and crossed their paths and Onyx was that opportunity Serai needed and most definitely the man needed. The natural development of his relationship with Serai's daughter was too cute.
Best part is they were both the silver lining the other needed and together they're beautiful. When I say I enjoyed every page of this short read. I can read more if ever given.
This legit was a good book. It was short , well paced. It didn’t feel rushed or too rushed. It had a good plot, I really respect Serai as a single mother. That little adorable baby Haven was absolutely cute. I love her little self. Now let’s get down to business, this man Onyx is the definition of a real man that doesn’t play. He had this instant connection without even knowing Serai. I love that from him. He was a provider and came correct behind them two.
This was a good one. Definitely wish it didn’t end but it wrap up perfectly!
My girl Sie Nicole has never disappoint me yet with her catalog.
I felt all the emotions and vibes from this story. Might be a short one but it show the readers survival mode from this amazing single mother who is doing what has to be done for her daughter.
Onyx is a gritty, heartfelt, and beautifully written novella that follows two people from completely different worlds, both just tryna survive and chase purpose. Serai is a single mom doing her best to juggle life, school, and motherhood. Onyx is a street-savvy businessman who built his empire brick by brick. When their paths cross? Whew… sparks fly—but in the most grown, layered way.
What I loved is how real this story felt. The characters got depth, the dialogue is sharp, and the pacing keeps you locked in from page one. It’s giving Black love with pressure, hustle with heart, and softness in the middle of struggle.
If you love a story with authentic voices, strong female leads, and a bossed-up male character who’s more than just money and muscles—Onyx needs to be on your list.
I don’t care how many time I say I love a man who make ish happens and we adding Onyx to that list. Serai and Have both deserve to live a soft life and Onyx made it his business to make it happen. A MAN>>>>>>>>. The shtty ex got what he deserved his mama was just a bonus🤭. A insta love is one trope imma eat up everytime😌 and him adopting Haven was the cherry on top. Like yesssss marry me and change my baby last name 😏👏🏽.
Well well well I must say this book was good, and I didn't put it down until I was done!!!!! Im glad rei got her happy ending. And im glad that bd of hers got what he deserves..... 5 stars all the way keep up the good work and can't wait for the next book
I thought this was going to be a multiple book story but nope it’s not nothing truly happens with them until the epilogue and not on no slow burn but on a lack of progression in the romance it felt like the beginning of a book not a whole 100 page romance
Onyx is a real man and provider in every sense of the words! And Serai was so sweet, hard working and deserved the world. Even Haven’s little self kept me smiling throughout the book ❤️
