Unbreakable Bonds tells ten touching stories of mothers who spent years aiding the recovery of their children, US soldiers and Marines who suffered severe injuries during the War on Terror. The survival of these wounded warriors is a testament not only to the extraordinary efforts of military medical personnel and their own inner fortitude, but also to their mothers. These women put their lives on hold from the moment they get that first call about their injured son or daughter, giving up their homes and careers and leaving behind family and friends. They are ever present, from those agonizing early days in intensive care, through dozens of lifesaving operations and the months and years of both triumphs and setbacks during therapy and rehabilitation. Their commitment, like the wounds their children suffer, is lifelong.Unbreakable Bonds showcases the selfless love and support of the mothers who, like their wounded warriors, have been changed forever, and who have, without hesitation, sacrificed greatly for their country. They also find strength through the exclusive network of caregivers, who are there not only for their sons and daughters, but for each other as well. With forewords from former president George H. W. Bush and former Maryland congresswoman Connie Morella, this book will appeal to US service members and their loved ones-and those without ties to the military will gain appreciation for those who risk so much to serve our country.Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. This book provides you with a small glimpse into the lives of 10 Moms from Walter Reed who gave up everything to help their children heal from the wounds of war.
The role of the non-spousal caregiver is hardly ever told. It was great to see ten examples of how our nation's wounded don't always have a spouse to help them heal. It is a dialog that needs to get out there.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking to be inspired by stories of unconditional love and sacrifice.
Inspiring stories of servicemen/woman injured in performing their duty to the United States. The stories explain how they were injured, their long roads to recovery, and the people who stood by them, helping them navigate the new path before them. The support that the moms gave each other is another common occurrence within the narratives.
[...] The bond between a mother and her child is the strongest bond on earth―indescribable, indelible, unbreakable.
Mothers feel their children’s pain, relish their accomplishments, and look forward to see them having kids of their own. “They are the first line of defense against bullies, recalcitrant teachers, colds and sore throats, and a myriad of real and perceived enemies during childhood. They share their lives with other moms on the soccer field, at PTA meetings, and during lunch breaks at work”. And sometimes being a mother becomes an act of heroism.
In ways that are both heartrending and uplifting, Unbreakable Bonds: The Mighty Moms And Wounded Warriors Of Walter Reed celebrates two groups of heroes―our military men and women and their devoted mothers. Based upon the touching stories of ten young wounded warriors who have been treated at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Dava Guerin and Kevin Ferris’ memoir showcases not only the traumatic losses experienced by our soldiers and the extraordinary efforts of our military medical personnel, but first and foremost the inner fortitude and selfless love of those remarkable mothers who gave up the comfort of their homes, lost their jobs, saw their marriages crumble, faced financial hardships, and suffered from physical and mental fatigue to look after their severely injured warriors. As they become their sons and daughters’ permanent caregivers, the lives of these moms, known as the Silver Star Mothers, are dramatically affected, war casualties on the home front, but the bonds that tie them to their children remain untarnished. You realize that the Mother/child bond is so important to a person's well being, and if that bond is never made in childhood a person will suffer hie/her whole life. The Kevlar helmets, body armor, rapid in field first aid and in a field hospital in less than 30 minutes keeps our troops alive. All of the troops in these stories would have died during Vietnam.
One of the best written real life stories of real life people going through real life crisis as a result of the wars we are fighting for our freedom! I wish this was a mandatory read for every American so they realize what some go through so we all can remain free!
