A Chicken Was There

A Chicken Was There: World War II

Rate this book
Our kids need heroes. This is a book about heroes who don’t have superpowers and can’t be found on a stage or in a sports arena. They’re everyday people who stood up for others in a time of darkness. They’re the kind of heroes whose stories will inspire readers to see that making a difference in the world happens one person at a time.

Using a chicken as a narrator brings both wit and innocence to the twenty-five historically based short stories of World War II. Focusing on everyday heroes, each story draws the reader in with factual aspects of the battles and people of the time period mixed with the more personal, human side of war.

This book contains stories of some of the war's great battles such as Iwo Jima, Dunkirk and Midway Island. Also included are several Holocaust hero stories as well as inspirational tales of Americans such as the Navajo Code Talkers and the Tuskegee Airmen who showed bravery not just in war, but in everyday life as well.

Written by a middle school English teacher, these books use short stories to target reluctant readers by helping them engage in history without overwhelming them with the commitment of a long chapter book. Each story stands alone and encourages further discussion by stirring a desire to learn more about the subject. The unique narration invites objective discussion of the events as well as the point of view of those involved.

These stories aim to inspire young readers to see that heroes aren’t just people who exist on the pages of a history book- the world needs heroes now.

When soldiers, leaders, and everyday heroes fought so the world could be free, A Chicken Was There.

Great book

This book was great. It's written from the chicken's point of view which adds some funny moments. These are
individual stories that aren't well known. My son and I enjoyed looking them up after we read a chapter and reading all
about it. Definitely recommend.

Fun and unique!

History through the eyes of chickens, what a fun and unique book! I enjoyed all of the stories. The chickens were sweet and hilarious, they all had different personalities, and each story had a different perspective. Many of the stories were not as well-known, it was fun to research some of the events later to find out more. I love this author and I have
enjoyed all of her books! The World War II book did not disappoint. I highly recommend!
