Drama High #17

Sweet Dreams

Rate this book
In Jayd Jackson's world, the end is just the beginning...

If only life could always be as sweet as Jayd's dreams. Mama, although back at home, is still not completely out of the woods, Nellie's boyfriend is showing his true colors more often than not all over Nellie's body, Mickey's relentless in her denying Nigel of any custodial rights to their daughter, and just when Jayd thought that she'd finally gotten over Rah he comes back to haunt her in the most personal way possible. With all of the drama going on around her Jayd barely has time to focus on her ever-increasing schoolwork let alone her spiritual development or her budding romance with Chase. In the end, Jayd pulls in all the right resources to handle business once and for all but will this be the end of the drama, as she knows it, or is it too good to be true?

This series is in desperate need of a makeover. Ever since the author has been self-publishing, the story arc has been dodgy. The characters have all turned one dimensional and the writing has diminished in skill. I don't even care what happens in the story anymore, but I'm stuck in a feeling of obligation to continue. This used to be one of my all-time favorite Black young adult series to read and recommend to others. Now I don't want this on anyone's radar because they'll just end up disappointed like me.

Is this the end?

I really enjoy reading about Jayd and her friends. I wonder what will happen next with them. The ending could have been a little better but I liked it very much!!

Sweet Dreams
It opens with Jayd saying in her journal that after what she found out at Cameron’s, she’s ready to take down Esmeralda without her grandmother and Netta’s help. Then she wakes up at Chance’s after having a dream where she and Rah are each other’s first on a beach. She’s undecided whether she’ll take Chance’s mother up on her offer to stay with them while her mother’s car is fixed. But she’s enjoying living in the lap of luxury.

At school, Nellie and Maggie go back and forth over who’ll be the senior homecoming queen. Chase and Redi get into it over “where Chase’s loyalties lie (if not still with the drama club). Later at home, Jayd and her mother notice something is off with Mama. It’s like someone’s put a love spell on her and Daddy which is causing them to act like teenagers again.

Mickey rants to Jayd that she should have recorded what she did to her at the party. Jayd reminds her she had her own issues to deal with (with) her mom’s car getting broken into. Mickey goes on a tangent about how she’s not going to let Nigel and his mother get their way and they don’t know who they’re up against. Especially with “G’s” family having her back. Jayd calls her delusional and advises she let go of her “Cinderella fantasies”. She tells her that maybe she needs to be thinking of college instead (which would look good to a judge). But of course, this is the furthest thing from Mickey’s mind. After helping Marcia clear up the misspelling of her name on her schedule, Jayd runs into Jeremy whose apologetic about what happened at Cameron’s but she’s no longer feeling his passiveness. He gives her a gift (that would have been for their one-year anniversary) but Jayd refuses to take it. Chase walks up as Jeremy leaves and tells him to tell her to listen to number seven. Chase opens the box to find a classic Ipod. Song number 7 is Creed. Jayd feels bad that it ended the way it did but she knows she and Jeremy are NEVER EVER EVER getting back together. She’s moved on!

Jayd decides to whip up a tainted treat known as “Cripple Creampie” and she’ll use one of Esmeralda’s clients to deliver it to Misty and then to Cameron. While baking it she decides to take a nap and has another dream of making out with Rah while he fixes her mother’s in a parking lot. When she awakens she has an counter with Esmeralda and one of her many animals. This time it’s a spider that she gives orders to get inside Jay’d head. Instead, Jayd gets her crow not only to eat the spider (but to help her earlier get an ingredient for the pie).

On the way home from school, Jayd offers to watch Nicku fpr am jpir who;e
As usual, when Jayd goes to work she gets several life lessons. This time one is about pledging. She ells her a story about how she and Theresa Esop were on a faux AKA line. She had this dream that her line sisters were in danger and they didn’t listen. As a result some of them were droaned. The lesson being that Jayd should wait if she’s thinking of pledging until she graduates. Then she tells another story about her past with Dr. Whitmore. She admits they had an affair and probably would have got married but he didn’t believe in God, marriage, or kids. Then we find out the shocking truth (well to me) that Jay’d mom is his child. (He never took the news well or stepped up to the plate). Then they talk about the spiritual battle that’s caused by Esmerelda. Jayd learns that Netta is the one that caused her grandparents to fall back in love from a pin in her grandmother’s hair that Netta placed alove and protection spell on. Esmeralda was the one who turned them against each other in the first place.

Chase and Jayd shop for Homecoming outfits. Chase wants them to make it official by going to the game together. Jayd isn’t ready for more drama. But who should show up but Nellie and Cameron. Cameron hints and them looking very close these days and Chase doesn’t exactly deny it by saying and if we are it’s our business. Nellie looks pissed but Jayd tries to smooth it over but saying Camerson doesn’t have any friends so she doesn’t know what real friendship looks like. This makes Chase pissed because he thinks Nellie and Jeremy can handle it. Then he asks is it about Jeremy or Rah. Jayd denies this and he drops the argument and says she’s she’s never lied to him before and he doesn’t want it to be the day she starts. Jayd tho doesn’t want to hurt multiple people by making her and Chase official.

The Queen and King are announced (Maggie and KJ). Bellie is clearly upset and takes off. Maggie invites everyone to a celebration at her house, but Chase says he has something to do and will catch up later. Jayd wishes she could ease the tension growing between them and turn back time so maybe she would have paid his crush on her more attention and by this point they would be a real couple. But she has no idea how to fix the strain. So, she leaves with Nigel (whose wondering what’s up with Chance) but Jayd just says he has a lot on his mind. Not long after they get a call from Chance whose with Nellie and tells them something happened and she needs to go to the hospital but refuses. So, they follow Chance’s directions and find him and Nellie (who looks like she’s been in a fight). Nellie won’t let anyone touch her (but Nigel). She accuses Chance of this being his fault because he broke up with her for Allia. She also blames Jayd for putting a spell on Chance so he won’t love anyone else and then warns her that Camerson said she’s going to get what’s coming to her. Nigel say he’ll make sure she gets checked out and home safetly. He asks her what’s wrong and she can’t say but I think we already know she was raped by David. At the party, Jayd meets the guest of honor Pete (who doesn’t trust her motives in enlisting he, Havier, and Marcio’s help). Eventually tho he believes Jayd when she says she’s not after his money or his weed. She just wants to free all the sould in Esmeralda’s house.

Jayd has another dream about Rah. They’re older. Rah is married to Trish and has another daughter and a son. Jayd has put on weight , is an attorney, and no longer a priestess since the death of her grandmother. Theyy meet at a restaurant and make out under the table. The indication that no matter what happens Rah will always be apart of her dream life now that they can share dreams. She wakes up at Chances. She goes to see Nigel and Mickey’s there speaking with Nigel’s father’s attorney. Jayd notices his knockles are bruised but he won’t talk about and insist he got them from the game. Mickey comes up ON FIRE and spits in Nigel’s face because he’s trying to get her thrown into jail if she violates the custody agreement and has Nickey around “G”. When she gets back Chance tells her he heard her call Rah’s name in her dreams several times and says she’ll never love him the same.

At school, Nellie gives Nigel an expensive pocket watch to show her appreciation., but the gift bothers him when he see she’s not giving it to him out of “friendship”. Jayd avoids an attack of Misty’s whose now able to transform into a snake when Maggie opens the bathroom door and knocks Misty on her backside. Jeremy is also taken in by the parole officers for finding evidence of him selling weed. Jayd finds out this is a “gift” from Misty for stealing from Cameron’s house. Misty also seems to know about what’s happened with Rah, Jeremy, and Keenana. She tells her that she’ll see her later in her dreams.
So the plan as I understand it is Chase is going to make a drop to Esmeralda of a “fixed” product. When Misty morphed into a snake Jayd thought if she could somehow taint her blood and let one of Esmeralda’s pets bite her this might work. Then at Netta’s while being given another lesson, Jayd sees that Netta can “read” her clients through the pins in their hair. So she thinks maybe she can use a mirror to (distract Esmeralda by reflecting the pets souls with mirrors?).

Chase delivers the package to Hector. Then Nigel calls Jayd to come get Mickey. Mickeys’ at his house and was told by Nellie that he beat up David when he came back for Nellie after Homecoming. She plans to black mail Nigel into going back on the agreement they made her sign. She gives the papers to Mrs. Esop and she doesn’t put up a fuss about it (too distracted with her lesbian daughters up coming wedding and her depression over it). Jayd does tell her she appreciated what she tried to do for her. When leaving she sees Rah and he tries to make a move on her. He knows about their dream connection and tries to invite her back to his plan, but she turns him down. Later she has a talk with Mama who tells her none of these boys are right for her. She tells her that she has to first love herself or she’ll always be looking for love in other people. Mama also knows about what Jayd’s “aarmy”. But Jayd has no plans of calling of what’s in motion despite her grandmother’s warning. She just has to keep her out of her head until it’s over.

Deciding to give Chase some space, Jayd goes to the restaurant where Keenan works. He’s working on a project with some of his college friends to film a commercial. They invite her to come along but they’re a bit to pretentious for her so she turns it down despite his pleas that he’ll be back and they can do something together. In walks, David and Jayd sees that he and Keenan know each other. His parents go to David’s church and he takes some college courses. Keenan says he’s cool, but Jayd tells him he beat Nellie. Keenan tells her she deserves it for having too much and his mouth it greeted by Jayds hand.

For some reason, Jayd mentions what’s about to go down to Mickey, and G. G finally hears about how he’s being used and says he’s going to light up that house that night. Misty somehow sneaks into Mama’s house and Jayd catches her controlling her with a voodoo doll as she comes out of Mama’s closet. Jayd hopes into the vision and sees Mama again on a crocodile (Russell). She can’t get her to wake up, Jayd IRL slaps the mess out of Misty and they struggle on the ground to get the doll. Jayd blinds Misty but not before Misty cuts off her hair. Jayd then uses Esmeralda’s bird whose “keeping notes” and tells it to watch Mama.

In a very unsatisfactory ending, there isn’t even a fight. Jayd gets into the house and is guided by Maman who tells her to take the bird's eye out for what she did to her daughter. But then Esmeralda shows up and she has Chase who no one’s heard from. Jayd stabs the bird in the eye. Then she stabs it in the chest and Esmeralda crumples. Later she and Chase make love before Jayd takes his memories. She decides she loves Chase but Esmeralda might try to go after him in his dreams and she can’t have that.

My Thoughts
This was the most UNNECESSARY book in the series. I’m sorry I bought it but it's not on any of the other sites and I need to wrap this series up. At this point, IM DONE with Jayde’s and this series' obsession for Rah. It wasn’t enough that she cut him off a couple of books ago. NOOO! We get a whole book of her dreaming about making love to him in some kind of weird, virtual, telepathic bond they have. Like the series just NEEDS him for some reason. So it won’t let him die. It just keeps bringing him back and bringing him back and bringing him back. Until I’m reading just finish the series so I won’t have to hear about him anymore. It didn’t even move the plot along. It was UN NEEDED FILLER! I guess Nor did anything else move the plot. There was a lot of “planning” and talking being done (with a lot of egos thrown around). But here’s the thing with me and *talking*. This is one of the quickest ways I know to get underneath my skin to just talk about what you plan to do (and talk and talk and talk). So I was thinking okay enough talk. Let’s just move the plot along where someone (hopefully) kills Esmeralda. There’s all this build-up and all these talking about what all these people wanna do. Then Jayd goes in and stabs her bird in the eye and in the chest and that’s *it*. ARE YOU SERIOUS?! It spent more time on the visions and the planning than the actual resolution of the issue. So, this one I really could have skipped or not written at all.

I hardly do Spoilers when it comes to books, but I must say. Listen man, I was rooting for Chase and Jayd to become boyfriend/girlfriend. I was disappointed. That she erase his memories. Book 17 wasn't nothing like 15, book 15 took me forever to finish that one off. I'm like man. Why this book so boring, it was the Esmeralda dream bull that had me distracted. But book 17, was worth the read. If I didn't complete 15.i would've gotten the chance to complete this one. Towards the end I was staring at those pages hard burning a hole through it lol. Praying Chase didn't die. I'm oh fuck nah. he's at least of my favorites characters in the book. I hated Esmeralda, still hate her while reading book 18 lol. I'm hoping that Misty would be back like she was in book one before crazy women got her claws into her.

*****SPOILERS******
I finished this book in two days; I was more than happy that this book wasn't like 15 and 17 because lord knows those dreams used to bore me. But man I really wanted Jayd with Chase lol. Like Seriously, so much of a disappointment. That end had my heart racing I'm like he better not die, Esmeralda, *** better not. But I do wonder if Misty will be back to herself. Can't wait to read the next book.
