In the heart of a classified Chinese command facility, a new kind of war is launched with chilling precision. Three electromagnetic pulses detonate high above the United States, and the nation goes dark. The grid collapses. Chaos erupts. While America’s enemies celebrate, one man is about to find himself on the front line of a war no one saw coming.
Rafer Voss, a former Marine with Force Recon, is running security at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad when the world fractures. With America electronically blind and communications with Washington severed, the embassy is suddenly an isolated outpost in a sea of rising hostility. A relentless Iranian operative, Shahriar Mazdaki, begins to tighten a noose around the city, exploiting the chaos with cunning and brutality.
As the embassy falls under a full-scale assault, Rafer must lead a small group of survivors through the war-torn streets of a city that has become a hunting ground. Every alley is a potential kill zone, every stranger a possible threat, and betrayal lurks where he least expects it. From the ruins of Baghdad to the treacherous Syrian border and the dangerous waters of the Mediterranean, Rafer’s journey is a high-octane battle for survival against impossible odds. He is a man fighting not just an enemy, but the ghosts of his past and the fear of a future where the home he’s trying to reach may no longer exist.
Forced to forge uneasy alliances with smugglers and rebels, Rafer and his companions must navigate a world where a superpower’s fall has unleashed every sleeping demon. His only goals are to keep his people alive and return to his family. But with a price on his head and a relentless enemy who will not stop, can he survive the storm?

There were some elements in this story that I found interesting. It has a not uncommon EMP attack on the US, but the entirety of the story is following Rafer Voss, a former Marine and currently an embassy worker in Baghdad. I found this to be a unique angle as he and his colleagues come to grips with the attack on their home and their isolation with no support in deteriorating circumstances in the Middle East. There was also a lot of action to go with this as they try to get to safety. However, for me, the story was marred and bogged down by a lot of repetition, both in what Rafer was thinking and in revisiting the plot over and over. His full name was given frequently as though we might not remember him between chapters. There were other Marines who were with him and these poor fellas barely got names. It also made no real sense to me why Rafer was such an obsessive target by an Iranian commander. Rafer was a former Marine who retired from Force Recon but worked at the embassy standing guard and running security checks. Nothing to justify the Captain Ahab focus of the Iranian commander. I managed to finish the book to see what happened and it more or less ended with an unresolved whimper.
Lots of action follows a true hero. He leads and others follow. War is truly hell. From the embassy in Baghdad to the Mediterranean the escape is on! Wish there was an American follow on!
Good strong characters and story line. Good addition to the series. Recommend for action and entertainment. Well written. Can't wait to read more by this author.
