"People rise to the level of expectation you have of them. If you don't trust them, how are they supposed to prove you can?"Finlay Donovan was SUPPOSED to be having a breather after the chaos of the police academy shootout, the casino mobster hijinks, and the multiple bodies she's had to hide over the last few months (not a serial killer, just unlucky)...but then her neighbor moves in.
Well, maybe Finlay wouldn't be so afraid if she wasn't hiding multiple skeletons in closets at this point...
"Your generation coddles kids too much," she grumbled. "You're all so afraid of everything."

"That book you were writing..." Detective Tran flipped a page in his notebook."Sinister Regrets? ... I managed to get through quite a few of your books, and I noticed some intriguing parallels."
[Nick's] eyes snapped to me. "When are you going to start trusting me?"
The silence stretched between us.
“Maybe you need to stop thinking about this as a case and start thinking about it like a story. Maybe it’ll make more sense to you that way.”
“What do you mean?”
She turned sideways on the bench seat to face me. “You’ve got all these little random plot threads, right? All you have to do is figure out how those plot threads connect. Ask yourself, what do Mrs. Haggerty and Penny Dupree have in common with that book? Figure it out, and that’s the solution to your mystery. Anything else is just a red herring.”
