Years after my mother was taken from me, I'm back in the ancient city I loved, but also the place which became a reminder of the worst night of my life. I must succeed in my mission to infiltrate the High Coven in the city of York. They're the ones holding my mother captive, and the only way to find her is to become one of them. I've spent years finding a way into their coven, doing the one thing my mother warned me not to do.
I use my magic.
To be a shadow witch is to create new spells, a coveted power that isn't supposed to exist. My kind died out centuries ago, and yet here I am. If the Covens obtain my power, they will have a second witch to create for them - one more powerful than they've ever seen. I can't be discovered and risk the same life of captivity that my mother succumbed to. She sacrificed herself for me so that I could live a free life, but one of guilt, knowing it was my fault she was taken.
To free her, I must hide in the one place they wouldn't think to look. Within the heart of the High Coven itself, working in their archives where I can learn more about my developing abilities. Abilities I can use to find my mother.
Started off slow. Picked up in the middle and ended fantastic. I really enjoyed this book and understand that it took longer to lay out the world and the plot. Truly can’t wait to see where the author takes this.
Holy moly macarolly was this a fabulous read! I have been anticipating, anxiously, a series in this world ever since I read the novella by this amazingly talented author and she delivered! Oh my word did she deliver! I fell in love with Faye and was desperate for her story! And after this book, well flip, I just loved her even more! Her challenges, what she faces, the gut wrenching betrayals, just got under my skin. I wanted to wave a magic wand and make everything hunky dory for her. However... Ms Cain didn't agree, so she sullied the water, churned up mud and sent me on a rollercoaster of note!
Faye, one of the last Shadow Witches, besides her mother, is on a mission, a mission to find her mother who was abducted 5 years prior. Resounding guilt is churning in her head, in her tummy, because, according to Faye, “My powers condemned her, and they are going to save her” Yep, she feels she HAS to. Clandestine activity becomes the norm for her, she's set herself up as a researcher in a library in York, where the First Coven dominates. Heck, they dominate full stop! Here she meets her boss, the gorgeous Gideon who sets off butterflies in her tummy. I loved how Liz captured the moments, all the moments, vividly. From the "thing" between Gideon and Faye, to the oh so hilarious Kyza, to the Shadow Realm, to her new friend Izzy, to Richard, Ingrid, all of them OMG awesome in their own way. Except....none of them are as they appear, not Faye, nor any of the rest of the cast in this splendid read.
Good grief, these characters??? These are no mere characters, these are living, breathing, real people, personalities off the charts clear, concise. I don't know who makes me chuckle more, the arrogant, pompous, everything is a hassle Kyza or the no nonsense, almost abrasive attitude of Ingrid is. We have the secretive enigmatic Gideon, who's yummy and sweet, he's sweet on Faye too, and I loved seeing him wear his heart on his sleeve, so sighhhh...I immediately liked the exuberant Izzy, loved the protectiveness of Richard and really disliked a number of characters. Spinning this story, as only someone with the inherent prowess that Liz Cain possesses, took me into an uncharted territory of emotions. Highs and lows, then lows and highs, cringe and weep, fear and joy, the entire spectrum! You'll TOTALLY get it once you've read it, Richard drops a bombshell, Gideon drops a nuclear bomb, Izzy drops world annihilation! And my heart, when Gideon and Faye did the "I've shown you mine, now show me yours" (nooooo, not THAT showing of THAT!) it was as though an astroid had hit me! But wait! There was more!!! Oh dear heavens, what happened at the end, it was as unexpected as a hurricane that had caught me in it's clutches!
The pacing of this book is fabulous! Fast paced but never to the point that I was left in the wind, or breathless. I WAS breathless from the twists and turns, the majorly unexpected, with timely revelations that threw my mind into overdrive! Like, GEEZ! my brain was ringing, my eyes were popping out of my head, my jaw, well, that I had to scrape off the floor! In a nutshell, THIS author is spectacular in her storytelling! To be able to "get me" as she did, sooooo many times, is unprecedented, this was me in a Ferrari with Liz in the driver's seat at full speed, and blow me down if I wasn't clenching my bladder from anxiety! Outstanding! Where Liz took this story, HOW she took it round all those sharp curves like a pro, hell, she IS a pro! So magnificently did Ms Cain dupe me, one of her characters deserves the Oscar of all Oscar's for performance! Heck, LIZ CAIN deserves THE Oscar for storytelling!
This was a great start to this new series! Faye is a shadow witch, only one of two known shadow witches in the world! But she must remain hidden as she is the only free witch in existence who can create new spells. Other witches, and the First Coven in particular, will do anything to get their hands on her as they are unable to create new spells without her skills and powers. So what does Faye do? Enter the lair of the enemy of course!
Her reason? 5 years ago the head of the First Coven took her mother and Faye will do anything to find her and get her back. Working in the Coven's library archives, she must do whatever she can to find out more about her own powers as well try to find out where her mother is being held and by whom.
At the same time, Faye and her mentor Gideon, who she has a major attraction to, are on the case of some witches who have been murdered. Who is killing them and why? The perpetrator was a bit surprising at first, but made sense in the end!
Faye was a great character - very determined, loyal, powerful and so very good at keeping her secrets most of the time. Kyza was hilarious and I cannot wait to read more about Faye's encounters with him. Gideon was intriguing with what he was (I won't spoil it here for you!) and I want to know how he managed to stay under the radar of the rest of the Coven.
The whole idea of the Shadow Witch was a great one and the Shadow Realm and Isis especially, definitely made me want to know more. I can't wait to see how Faye's powers develop now she is learning more about herself and what she might be able to do.
I received an ARC copy of this book, but this review is my own honest one! Thank you Liz for another great read. Looking forward to reading the rest of this series!
Shadow Witch is the first book I have read by Liz Cain and boy was I impressed. The worldbuilding is top notch, the characters are developed nicely, and the storyline is unique and riveting. There is romance with no bedroom scenes, but definitely violence and blood galore.
Faye is a young witch who is emerging from hiding after 5 years to join the staff of the magical library run by the First Coven. Years of working up her credentials while searching for her missing mother have led her here, to the heart of enemy territory, where she is sure her mother is being held prisoner. Can she navigate the maze that is the sentient library without exposing her powers as a shadow witch?
Faye and her mother are the only two surviving shadow witches. Long thought extinct, shadow witches are the most powerful type of witch and the only type that can create new magic and spells. With the coven tipped off to their existence, Faye must tread carefully as she searches out their secrets. And her co-worker, the very hot and sexy Gideon, is a distraction she can not afford.
With bodies piling up and hunters roaming the streets, the suspense keeps mounting in this roller coaster of a book. I was absolutely riveted and could not put it down. Faye is a great heroine and Gideon is a heartthrob. The twists and turns just kept coming and the showdown with the big baddie caught me by surprise. I was so sad to find that I was at the end of the book and wanted more, more!!! I can't wait to read the next book in the series, and I will definitely be checking out the author's backlist.
I read an advance copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Faye is a powerful witch, one of a kind, who used magic, and her mother was taken. That was five years ago. Now, she has accepted a job undercover to find her missing mother at the First Coven. They are shadow witches, the last ones left. Powerful beyond imagination and envied and wanted for their powers. She accepts a job as a junior librarian in a sentient library, which seems to have taken a liking to her. The senior librarian, Gideon, seems taken with her and she to him. Something is off about him though. She will accelerate her position within the coven by unleashing magic that seems to surprise the others. When murders start occurring, it is related to the incident from five years prior when her mother was taken. She has a mentor, Richard. She also has a powerful Viking Vala, a seer, Isis. She also gains a very rude arrogant familiar named Kyza. Things are not adding up. She innocently changed the course of events by her actions. She is being followed…but by who and why? Then there are others pursuing her but to what end? She is just trying to get to the bottom of things and looking for her mother. Only a few people she knows will be the ones she can trust. Things occur that could cost her her life. Betrayals will occur. An accident will lead to a very bad thing from the shadow realm. So much will happen in a short time that she will only have more questions. In a new series, Faye is undercover to find her mother and take down evil. Only, she is surrounded by it from different factions. Apparently, her long lost father she knows nothing about has left her a secret yet to be revealed. Where will it all end up? Find out in the continuing series.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this first book of a new series and sat up till silly o’clock to finish it! Liz Cain has a real talent for writing characters that are gritty, strong and determined, but with real heart and their own moral code. They are characters that you admire and feel empathy for and Faye is looking set to become another favourite.
Faye is determined to find her mother and takes herself right into the lions den, to where she believes her mother is being held, to search for, and ultimately rescue her. This story is about so much more than just a rescue attempt though. Faye doesn’t have a real understanding of her powers, even though she knows that she is a strong shadow witch. She has to learn more about where her powers come from, how to use them while protecting herself and, at the same time, keep herself hidden from the First Coven.
We also meet the mysterious Gideon, who Faye is attracted to, but is wary of becoming involved with. This adds an element of will they won’t they, slow burn romance, which doesn’t overwhelm the storyline, but enhances it. Faye makes some ties, gathers some support from unexpected and somewhat snarky quarters, and is drawn into helping with various investigations and experiments. Not everyone is all that they seem and Faye has more than one fight on her hands, as she battles to stay in control of her powers, while keeping others safe. I love the ending, which introduces a character, tantalising us with what part they may play in the story, then leaves us wanting more!
Faye is a shadow witch. All her life she was taught to hide her powers in order to keep safe. After using her magic to keep a friend safe, her mother was taken by the High Coven. Since then, Faye has been planning her rescue of her mother and it has brought her right back to where her mother was taken. She has managed to get a job at the library that houses the High Coven, but must figure out how to get into their "vault" and get her mother out. But with witches being killed, Faye has another problem to deal with before she winds up being targeted next. Faye is definitely a brave woman. Knowing there is a chance she could get caught, she still willingly walks into the belly of the beast to save her mother. She is willing to do whatever it takes, even if it means facing down the entire coven and erasing all traces of her life up until now. But she is smart as well, using her power to craft a new identity (which I am still amazed that the author came up with that magical possibility!). Gideon is definitely a wild card in this book, you just never know what side he will end up on. He has his secrets and will not let anyone in. And I of course love Kyza because he's a wonderfully snarky cat. He is the epitome of a cat, right down to only being around on his time and not Faye's. This book is fast paced and has more than enough twists to keep you on your toes. From stealthy library shenanigans to back alley magical battles, you will be drawn into this story and won't be able to put it down. I couldn't believe how many times I was surprised by the characters in this book, esp. at the end! There were things I saw coming and things coming out of left field. I have read most of this author's books and I have to say that even though I love them all, this is my new favorite. She really knocked this one out of the park and I can't wait to see where this goes!
I've been hooked on this story since I first read it's prequel novella over a year ago and have been eagerly awaiting it's series. This gritty, gripping, gauntlet through the streets of York did not disappoint.
Faye is a Shadow Witch and the last of her line, her mum (the only other living Shadow Witch) has been taken and Faye is determined to get her back. The only way to do that though is to go undercover in the one place she shouldn't go. If they catch her they'll use her to create new spells just like her mother.
Alone except for her mentor Richard, Faye needs to navigate and infiltrate the world of the First Coven, whilst trying to hone her magic and discover more about her abilities. In a place full of secrets and lies she can trust noone.
This is a darker tale from Liz Cain but still full of amazing characters, great world building, using the historical city of York as her setting, and twists and turns in her plot to keep you guessing and enthralled throughout.
I'm eagerly awaiting the next instalment of this spellbinding tale.
"Shadow Witch," the first in a new series, perfectly sets the scene for more to come. Set in modern-day York, it follows Faye as she searches for her kidnapped mother, a shadow witch, and a quest that leads her to the city's library and the formidable First Coven. The multi-stranded plot introduces a host of intriguing elements, including a sentient library, deceitful modern witches, betrayal, hidden magic, and links to the past. We are introduced to Faye’s own shadow witch strength where she feel the pull of the Shadow Realm, Kyza, a familiar for Faye, and a future love interest in the mysterious Gideon. The story is told through Faye's eyes, and we learn that being a powerful shadow witch, is a secret she must keep from the First Coven. I especially enjoyed the retrospective episodes, which provided crucial context, and Faye's first chilling links with the Shadow Realm and the character of Isis, who is sure to be a disruptive force.
Love love love this book! I’m a huge fan of Liz and picked up this beauty at a recent book event
Anything witchy and supernatural I must read and the fact that a library is the main scene is even better lol. No spoilers but a quick rundown. Faye is a shadow witch - extremely rare and thought to be extinct. Her mum was one too and was captured by she thinks the ‘first coven’. They are all powerful and basically in charge of witches in the area. Faye wants to free her mom so she does everything she can in order to get a job at the library where she thinks her mom is being held. What follows is a journey to uncover the truth, solve some murders and start to fall for the hunky senior librarian.
As always Liz writes beautifully, full of witty humour and no cheese. She smoothly transitions and doesn’t over compensate on anything like a ton of paranormal authors do. If you haven’t read any of her books yet this is a great one to start with
Shadow Witch: Whispers in the Veil (Legends of the Shadow Witch Book 1) by Liz Cain ASIN : B0FGKYDNKV Publisher : Rogue Mirage Ltd Publication date : October 21, 2025
I have read most of Liz Cain's books and I can honestly say that I am totally thrilled with Shadow Witch: Whispers in the Veil!
It's fast paced, with relatable characters and a story line that I find quite refreshing. How Liz came up with a new "magic" given all of the fantasy material currently available is surprising in and of itself! Liz has grown and matured into a romantasy author worth following.
I highly encourage you to check out this amazing new series, Shadow Witch: Whispers in the Veil! by fantasy/romance author Liz Cain.
I loved reading Shadow Witch. Faye, Gideon and all the other characters are well developed. The world the author has created is vivid and fascinating, with a unique magic system and history. The story itself was deeply engrossing as Faye tried to find clues to where her mother is being held prisoner without getting caught or revealing the extent of her power. The pacing was great, with even some of the calmer scenes having new information and a big impact. I read this book in one sitting because I just couldn't put it down, and I can't wait until the next book comes out. I highly recommend this book!.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Even before its release, Shadow Witch: Legends of the Shadow Witch promises something truly special. The cover alone is breathtaking, haunting and powerful, and it perfectly matches the mystery hinted at in the description. A young woman discovering dark magic and ancient secrets? Count me in. Liz Cain seems to have woven a tale of destiny, power, and hidden truths, and I cannot wait to dive into this shadowy world. Instant preorder from me!
Our story starts with a shadow witch hiding. Faye is not hiding her witchiness, just her shadow powers. Using her shadow powers caused her mother to be kidnapped by the First Coven in York. Shes been searching for her mother for 5 long lonely years, feeling responsible for her captivity. Finally getting a job at the Coven's Library seems to be her best chance at answers. Hiding in plain sight will allow her to learn more about her powers and find her mother. Her new mentor, Gideon, makes her heart flutter, and coven members Desmond and Miranda seem evil, but who can she trust? Can she learn to manipulate the magic of the library? Can she find and rescue her mother?? Five Stars
I loved this book and meeting Faye. The story was interesting, had a bit of a mystery feel to it and some drama and suspense as Faye begins her new job at the Coven's Library and hunts for her missing mom. Plus get to watch her also try to learn more about her shadow witch powers and that was interesting. Fun story, some fun scenes and magic. Plus some good characters too to make things interesting.
This is my first Liz Cain book and it won’t be my last. I love witch stories that have always fascinated me - this book had me captivated from the beginning. The journey of Faye the shadow witch and the characters she engages with is filled with twists and turns - keeping the reader on their toes. It ends on a cliff hanger and I’m eager to know about Jensen and the first coven and will Faye find her mum? Read this if you want a fast paced story to help you escape for a few hours of relaxation
A Beautifully Written, Haunting Adventure Wow. Shadow Witch is one of those books that lingers with you long after the final page. Liz Cain’s prose is lyrical, her characters compelling, and the atmosphere she creates is unforgettable. The legend of the Shadow Witch is both chilling and captivating, and I was hooked on uncovering every detail. This book deserves all the stars and then some.
I am so glad that this author has started a new series because I so enjoy the worlds that she creates in her books. In this one, we meet a shadow witch in hiding, and she’s on the hunt for her mother whose captivity she feels responsible for. Her new job is going to help her do just that, but she finds a few surprises along the way. I just loved this book, and I knew that one of the characters wasn’t who they seemed, but I was surprised at who one of the other characters was. How’s that for not spoiling something?!? If you enjoyed this author’s other series, you’ll definitely love this first book in the latest one. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
I loved this book. I love Faye and Kyza, I can't wait to know more about Gideon and the hunter. The world building is wonderful and the characters are so easy to fall in love with. The story pulls you in and you feel as though you are in following the journey with her. Looking forward to the release of book 2!
I enjoyed the witch part of the story but I don't like books where the lead is romantically involved with two partners. The relationships are very soft but still there are two. [I don't care about the bisexual element; just the two relationships.]
Loved this book and read it straight through! Couldn’t put it down. A twisty murder mystery mixed with a missing persons case, witches, magical archives, snarky cats, and a mysterious Viking bar run by a Seer. What more could one ask for?
A great start to a new series! I really enjoyed the imagery and world building in this adventure. It’s a different type of witchy tale and I look forward to seeing what comes next for this intriguing cast of characters.
Faye is a shadow witch. Her mother was taken away by the High Coven to protect her. Faye wants to take revenge on the witches that took her mother away. To hide her identity she starts working in the library. Her powers are starting to grow more. Richard is her mentor and helps her. She meets Gideon who is the senior librarian. Faye starts to feel things for him but there is something mysterious about Gideon.
Loved the story. Set in York with a mystery library. What’s not to love. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
✨Truly magical from start to finish✨ I have been waiting for this one since I read the prequel novella quite some time ago. I am so glad that it was expanded into a series. Liz Cain is one of my auto-buy Authors for a reason. From start to finish the story telling is amazing and the tension between characters and within the main story line is fantastic. The setting had me wanting to book a day trip to York. Liz has expertly set such a vibe for this piece I am living for it and totally obsessed.
I adored the snarky cat Kyza, they have such well placed interactions 😺. I would have easily devoured this in one sitting if not for life being hectic right now.
I need more!!!!
Faye is trying to find and save her mother while hiding her own magic. Stepping back into an old place, and working in a magical library with so much more going on.
Off to re-read the prequel novella again with new eyes.
