The portals have opened, and the Demon King is coming to Earth. In... twenty years.
Josh Becker was once pretty average. That was until he won the Gigaball Lottery and got hundreds of millions of dollars (after tax). No, wait. He was still pretty average at heart even after that. It was when the portals started arriving in his backyard and he had to kill monsters every night when he started to become more of a special guy.
Now armed with some kind of video-gamey "System", Josh is minding his own business, making sure to deal with the portals and the threats they send each and every night. But one night, a new bonus portal arrives, and an elven warrior princess in dubious-looking armor strolls out. And that's when things get weird.
Princess Elysia has come to Earth from Antheria, bearing the grim news that she and Josh will have to fight alongside her comrades, the Hero's Party, to defeat the Demon King known as Black Lazarus... but when she checks her Chronos Crystal, she realizes that battle isn't scheduled for another twenty years.
So that's awkward.
These Heroines Are So High Maintenance is a spicy, slice of life, plot-averse story about a man and the demanding reverse-isekaied fantasy women who make his life more interesting. Reading it will definitely not make you a better person, but it will make you cooler. So what are you waiting for?
The MC is a thoroughly modern man. Meaning he hasn't a clue about relationships. Both harem women are screaming for him to be assertive and dominant, and he just limp noodles it. Then we learn what the third harem woman is, and they all need tattoos. I threw up a little, in my mouth. Funking hate tattoos.
Great story idea; too much soft core porn. I actually hope that one day the author would write something that doesn't revolve around lust. I actually liked the concept and the main character to a certain degree. However, this is a harem story with lots of porn elements. I am sure, an Elf in a metal bikini, that's fun size, ticked someone's box. The big turn off? The book lives up to the title of the book. The heroine really are annoyingly high maintenance. All the whining and bratty behavior just got to me. In fact, it was a big tun off. There were moments where I felt a sense of revulsion toward the various characters. The protagonist is a horny simp that bends over backwards for the princess. The princess is a lazy, neuritic, waste of space. I am pretty sure she was steps away from being a stay at home girlfriend with a WOW addiction. The hero/portal adventure bit, is just padding and an excuse for the whole story, as to why the MC has a secrete lusty elf for the reader to enjoy. Also, the metaphors. Every other sentence is a metaphor...it becomes tiring after a while. I think the author just phoned it in. 2.5/5.
I normally only do ratings. In this case, I have to applaud the author for the completely outrageous storyline he has created. I have read a lot of fantasy/harem-lit, and this was just so outlandishly funny from beginning to end as well as utterly ridiculous that I just couldn’t put it down. This is NOT your normal fantasy novel. If you looking for something completely out of left field, this book is for you. Down right HILARIOUS. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.
Look, if you have read his books before, you are familiar with Virgil’s absurdist sense of humour.
This book is that concentrated down to a wonderfully weird formula. The humour is off-beat and strange, and I frequently found myself laughing out loud and reading lines out to my partner because they amused me so much.
Very much a slice of life book, but an enjoyable one, and I am eagerly awaiting book two
I like the way the story is going, and the characters are fantastic. The world building is really weird, though like (spoilers) . . . . . Why is there just a random vampire countess and other dark creatures, and no one really cares. And why did our MC spend 2.2 million on a Russian KGB bed? lol, just some weird stuff that seems that doesn't add up. It's not a big deal, and maybe we'll get some answers in the next one
The book is just a bit of fluff but entertaining. I read it in an evening. The pace is pretty good and the editing is well done. Hope they come out with the next book soon so I don't lose track of the characters.
Very tropy, nothing super original here, though it's stereotypical for this author in tone and characters. In other words, read this for the chemistry, tone, and characters, the plot is secondary though it is there, hopefully we get more of it in a sequel. Worth the read for anyone interest in the genre.
