Collects Wade Wilson's War #1-4. Want answers about Deadpool? Like why does he refuse to move his weird red-and-black mask? Why does he only answer to the name "Deadpool"? Was hereally part of a black bag special ops team that nobody has ever heard of? Were his teammates really given names like "Bullseye," "Silver Sable" and "Domino"? What did Wilson know, and when did he know it? A bloody massacre in Sinaloa, Mexico has left hundreds dead and disgraced soldier Wade Wilson has a LOT of explaining to do.
I hate Deadpool. There I said it. Everyone seems to love him but I find him unbearable.
His mouth is just so annoying. He never, ever, stops talking. Granted, his attitude is the very crux of his character but I find it so agonising. I hate the films he’s in. I hate his voice. I hate the way he talks. I hate him.
So I thought I’d read one of his comics to see if my hatred was more for Ryan Reynolds or the character itself. Turns out it’s a little bit of both.
All I could hear when reading this was Ryan Reynolds’ voice. I suppose that means he portrays the character perfectly: I just don’t like the character. I do appreciate what Marvel was doing here though in creating an anti-hero who is a comic-book superhero. He’s a bit of fun, though after a few pages the fun makes me grit my teeth as he becomes more and more annoying with every page.
Deadpool is okay in small doses, but this isn’t a small dose. This is him celebrating his ego and providing his backstory which may or may not be true. We cannot trust a word he says as he teases the reader even more so than his opponents. That’s just what he does; he plays with people and leads them along until he has them right where he wants them. And here he gives you a glimpse of his real nature, though like everything about the man it is false and used to gain some form of advantage.
After a particularly nasty blowout south of the border down Mexico way, Deadpool is hauled in front of a US Senate committee where he’s questioned about similar shenanigans he may or may not have been involved in during Reagan’s years. But is Wade telling the truth or just another bunch of tall porky chimichangas…?
Wade Wilson’s War isn’t very good. I liked that Duane Swierczynski blurred the lines between fact and fiction throughout so you can see the differences between reality and what Wade’s distorted perspective look like, and that he left it up to the reader’s interpretation as to whether any of it happened or not.
Except it doesn’t matter whether or not any of it’s real, making it feel even more pointless than it already does given that it’s your usual Deadpool shoot-em-up-athon! It’d help if the story was entertaining but unfortunately it’s mostly not. Wade Wilson’s War turned out to be a fruitless and forgettable one!
The 4th wall is meant to be broken, and mouthy mercenaries take (propel?) the world of superheroes and super villains into post-modernism. Wade Wilson/Deadpool is one of the most interesting characters in comics, to me, because of all of his ambiguities and a backstory full of unresolved mysteries. He's neither hero nor villain, but straddles that line in between.
In this installment, Duane Swierczynski tries to answer a few lingering questions about Deadpool's past and shed some light onto what he might've known about a massacre in Mexico. His involvement in this event is more than he lets on, of course. I think the answers are adequate, though not entirely unexpected or surprising. Swierczynski has a handle on Deadpool's sense of humor which is the basis of the character. It's not the insanity interspersed by moments of clarity, but the humor that makes the character.
And now I can see why Ryan Reynolds got the part; too bad the rest of the movie took a nosedive.
I've always been interested in Deadpool but as with most comic book characters I've not read, I didn't know where to start. I first encountered the character a few years ago when Marvel attempted to bring Deadpool to the silver screen casting Ryan Reynolds in Wolverine: Origins. Most people felt that this was a perfect choice as Reynolds is known for his sarcastic delivery which fit the character perfectly – plus, he’s a fan. I don’t think anyone could have predicted just how badly they would screw it up.
In 2009, Marvel launched a new imprint entitled, Marvel Knights. Knights was going to be responsible for releasing stories that were described as "outside the box" and would challenge the reader's views of their favorite Marvel heroes. Having worked on several Marvel books in the past, Duane Swierczynski was tasked with writing a 4 issue Deadpool mini-series.
Following a bloody massacre in Mexico, Deadpool is forced to sit in front of his superiors and explain his role in the whole ordeal. While doing so, The Merc With A Mouth gives us a glimpse into his origins, his first mission and just why he refuses to show his face.
For my first Deadpool experience, I felt this was a pretty decent effort. You've got his trademark wit, his dark humor and the consistent breaking of the fourth wall (Deadpool is known for blatantly acknowledging he's in a comic book). I kind of expected the odd chuckle but didn't realize just how damn funny this character is. Kudos to Swierczynski for bringing that humor out.
Other than the Wolverine book I read a few months back, this is the most violent Marvel book I've read. That's not a complaint, I can't imagine Deadpool not surrounding himself with a good amount of bloodshed. I mean, what do you expect from a superhero that carries pistols, a couple of swords and is a contracted mercenary? Lots and lots of death.
I guess the only real issue I had about the book was the artwork. Granted, it's not all bad but I think I've had my fill of women with unrealistic busts. It's hard to really blame the artist for what appears to be an industry standard but it comes across as distracting and a little unnecessary.
I'm certainly not finished with Deadpool yet. There's a lot more out there and I intend to start tracking it down. I'm not so sure if this is the best place to start but it's worth checking out.
If you made it this far, congratulations! 'Til next time, take care :) :) :)
A few more words... I thought I could enjoy a self-contained Deadpool & Friends book like this - weirdos like Bullseye, Domino & Silver Sable should've given us rich troves of odd, detailed and nuanced character interactions, and a whole tale told from Wade's exaggerated and warped mind? About secret revisionist tales of killings throughout history? And letting us see behind the curtain, to hear some reflected shards of what really happened? How could this go wrong?
Wow.
I can't say it's a *bad* story but... Well, shit. Yeah, stop right there Mike. I can't even genuinely back up that sentence fragment. Nope, this is one terrible waste of a book.
Look, every character - from the senator, through the CIA spooks, down through our heroes, even friggin Wade himself - they're all just weak imitations of such characters I've read elsewhere. Ennis, Ellis, Clevinger have all done stuff with characters and motivations like this fine. Rucka? Kicks its ass and takes souvenirs. Remender? Gives a master class in how to combine humour, intrigue, pathos and mind-bending scenarios into a cohesive whole.
This shit was like one of those syndicated TV series that's produced in either Canada or New Zealand (and I say this as a card-carrying citizen of the Commonwealth): cranked out fast, with weak writing, superficially entertaining dialogue and decent but never remarkable visuals.
Here's what really burns my ass: I could swear Sweiericinfinczkski (or whatever his name I always butcher is) has written better than this before. I bet if he'd actually put some sweat and discipline behind this, we'd have had something that would perhaps give us a fresh new insight into Wade (and odd fringey mercenaries like him), or a great new way backstory of lives these characters have deeply lived we've never seen, or a great take on how goons like this would act with each other around?
Hell, what if this would have been done like a Marvel Supes version of the first third of Predator? Seriously? I'd be buying copies for all my friends just for the sheer manic brainless joy of it all.
Nope, none of this. Sorry kids, don't waste your time (and definitely don't waste your money).
Despite passable effort all around, I gotta give this one star for the simple fact of just how badly they fucked up the easy chance at making something awesome.
Another utterly terrible Deadpool story in what appears to be the norm for Deadpool stories. I have absolutely no idea what Sweirczynski was going for with this odd almost-parody of Charlie Wilson's War (it very rapidly loses any connection to that film as it slides right off the logic cliff). The whole time I was reading this I just kept thinking "Why?" Why did this character make this weird decision? Why did Deadpool make that lame-ass joke? Why was this book written in the first place?
This story genuinely serves such little purpose that I would go so far as to say it actively damages Deadpool as a character. He's been a wackjob whose true identity has been in question ever since Joe Kelly's run in the 90s, so that's nothing new. The thing that Swierczynski does is make Deadpool's backstory EVEN MORE convoluted and unbelievable. And not in a fun way that adds mystery to the character. Just in a confusing, wildly ill-conceived, utterly lazy way that makes me kind of not want to read Deadpool anymore.
Whether you are a Deadpool fan or a Deadpool newbie, DO NOT READ THIS. It will sour you on the whole character. Granted there isn't a lot of great Deadpool stuff out there, but the stuff that IS good (Joe Kelly's run, Cable & Deadpool, almost nothing else) is very good. Read that, trash this.
I know Marvel isn't going to stick with this "origin story" (which it is not) because it is too stupid to possibly give credence to, but still, the fact that they allowed this drivel to be published really makes me question exactly what the hell they're even doing. Deadpool has starred in countless awful stories now, and they just keep putting them out and putting them out and putting them out. You could theoretically write a story about Deadpool eating dogshit for 120 pages and they would publish it as long as he made a reference to Bea Arthur.
As a person who came to be a Deadpool fan during the Joe Kelly years, and solidified during Cable & Deadpool, I think I have finally learned my lesson. That stuff is not coming back. Daniel Way's run started out strong and quickly tanked. Deadpool Corps is "fine". Deadpool Team-Up is another waste of time filled with mostly misses. I'm hoping Posehn & Duggan amp up the quality, but based on their first book, it's another slightly-above-mediocre series. And then there's this. The nail in the coffin of my appreciation of this character. Nobody knows how to write him, and yet he's everywhere, haunting me like some ghost of a good comic. I'm gonna finish the Deadpool books I already have, but I highly doubt I will buy anything else unless it wins a damn Pulitzer.
So, goodbye Deadpool. You were killed by dozens of weak writers armed with the shittiest jokes money can buy. RIP.

Deadpool stories are always going to come at you fast with the comical one-liners and sexual innuendos that make for hilarious moments, but at times the entire plot just falls a little flat. This was no exception.
Разбиване на the fourth wall.
This storyline has the potential to forever-alter the way I read Deadpool. In these 100 pages, a complexity, depth, and social commentary are injected into our favorite merc with a mouth.
WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!
Is Deadpool the made-up persona of an otherwise insignificant soldier? Is every Deadpool comic simply the internalized ramblings of a mentally injured warrior? Is this why he's "self aware", because he is making up these stories in his mind? When he addresses "us" is he actually addressing himself?! Are we just along for the ride? If this is true, he ISN'T aware of US, he's simply talking to himself. Is Wade Wilson the personification of how poorly we treat our wounded warriors when they come back from battle? Does this explain why he can be married to a succubus, invincible, live for hundreds of years, etc? Is Wade Wilson sitting in a VA Hospital "living" this all out in his mind? Is Deadpool just a fantasy that the comic book-loving Wade Wilson is making up?
I LOVE Deadpool, these 100 pages could either elevate Wade Wilson to the level of a complex, tortured, soul who I truly care for—worrying for his well-being as he rots away in a hospital or it could add too much complexity to my otherwise mindless escape to hang out with everyone's favorite merc with a mouth.
Γενικά καλό και τίμιο αλλά όχι τόσο πολύ παράξενο και θεότρελο και εκκεντρικό βασικά σχεδόν καθόλου παρά ελάχιστα θεότρελο, αστείο, γελοίο και υπερβολικό και παράξενο και υπερβολικό όπως είναι ο Deadpool τα comics του και γενικά ολόκληρο το Deadpool Universe and his obscure stories and his characters and their adventures και όπως θέλω και ζητάω εγώ ως θαυμαστής του Deadpool και των θεότρελων και υπερβολικών παράξενων και ξεκαρδιστικών και ολίγον γελοίων περιπετειών αυτού του θεότρελου και ξεκαρδιστικού και υπερβολικού παράξενου σοκαριστικού anti-hero and also superhero obscure Marvel Character that Deadpool aka Wade Wilson really is in his behaviour and nature and also in most of his comics and adventures with other characters of the Deadpool Universe of Marvel Universe αλλά γενικά καλό αλλά προτιμώ και αγαπώ πιο τρελές και ενδιαφέρουσες εξίσου διασκεδαστικές και καλογραμμένες και καλοσχεδιασμένες ιστορίες και περιπέτειες του Deadpool και μάλιστα προτιμώ και λατρεύω τον Deadpool ως πιο ξεκαρδιστικό και θεότρελο και διασκεδαστικό και ενδιαφέρον υπερβολικό και πλακατζή φασαριόζο σε άλλα comicbooks and graphic novels of his or in other comicbooks and graphic novels that Deadpool makes appearances as way more hysterical, fuzzy, lousy, crazy lunatic, jackass, dumbass, hillarious over the top interesting and badass, annoying, prankster and motherfucking dangerous in many ways and conditions, wonderful trickster as Deadpool really is by his nature and behaviour, attitude and appearance in most of the other marvel comics and his Deadpool comicbooks and spinn offs such as Deadpool Corps or Domino or Cable and the X-Force!!!!
