Gore spatters and unlikely romance blossoms in a near future revenge thriller graphic novel that’s From Hell meets Westworld!

The year is 2188 and Jack the Ripper has returned to London.

For the last century, a shattered post-Brexit England has operated as a massive Victorian theme park in exchange for American military and financial protection. But when an American mogul’s grandson is killed in the heart of London, the delicate status quo is threatened.

Is the killer a brilliant maniac? Americans taking advantage of their superior technology? Or the English Underground Resistance, wishing to throw off the yoke of American oppression and re-join the modern world?

American Special Agent Jesse Holden and local British Police Detective Edwin Fogg must overcome their clashing ideologies in order to find the truth in the foggy streets of 22nd Century London.

Awesome high concept. The execution and the art didn't quite do it for me.

I wanted to enjoy this plot line but simply couldn't for many reasons. The story arc jumped in ways to tie the time frame of London with its detective to the US and it's modern detective in such a choppy manner. Simple editing could have aligned those pieces more easily, allowing room for additional story telling.

Secondly, the bravado of the US detective was unnecessary for as many frames as it was given, and the point could have been made more quickly, or even humorously in fewer frames, again, allowing room for moving the story forward.

While I was drawn in by the fictional time period,a new Ripper on the loose, and juxtaposition of two nations, I just don't think I'll continue with this one.

This is a really fun science fiction mystery with a strong dose of steampunk (even if it's set in the future). What's interesting about the worldbuilding is how it looks both forwards and backwards, because of how history (or even just our perception of history) shapes the world the characters live in.

I was delighted to discover how queer this book is. I wasn't aware of this before reading it, but then I got really excited to watch the central relationship develop. It doesn't disappoint.

My one issue is that the story ends pretty abruptly. I couldn't tell if this was meant to be a miniseries or the first volume of a set. If it's the former, then I think the ending needed a little more room to breathe.
