Tá mé tar éis an leabhar a léamh!
And it’s brilliant. So many obscure language questions were stuck in my head and Mollie cleared them up for me. Right down to “Where’s the perfect tense?” Even understanding how the names of the days of the week work! And thrilled at the times she invokes Seamus Heaney throughout the book. Yet another six star book in the runup to the end of the year. A good sdvertisement for her courses. And I was already enjoying her insta pages.

Mollie is a gifted and caring teacher, and that comes through even in her written words. She somehow manages to offer an in-depth analysis of etymology while also reaching her hand out to those of us who struggle with learning a new language. This is so much more than a workbook or a group of vocabulary banks.

A typical introductory language book might have a list of beginner phrases like "Say it again please = Abair é arís ". But in this book, Mollie doesn't just drop a list like that. Instead, she introduces it with this paragraph: "A great way to foster engagement with anyone, óg nó sean - young or old, and to help them feel understood and connected is to listen, regardless of your level of Irish. You can help them and their wellbeing by using some of these phrases ..." And then Mollie continues with translations for phrases like "I don't understand" or "Teach it to me" or "I am listening".

Mollie is actually inviting us into a beautiful, poetic frame of mind (at the same time as being very practical and accessible).

Read this book (and sign up for one of her online courses if you can). You will thank yourself later.

This outstanding and inspirational book is about the gorgeous and ancient Irish language, a language rich with echoes of the past, and one that generates new understandings about our ancestors and the world in which we live. It is also about belief, having a growth mindset. Mollie is a skilled educator with students all over the world. In this book, she lays out a passionate and motivational “call-to-action” for Irish people who have lost their way with the language for a myriad of reasons, offering an joyful and emotional journey through some of the magic it contains. But it’s also a celebration of life Mollie is seeing in the global explosion of interest. Folks from all corners of the globe are embracing and studying “An Ghaeilge”. Her joy in sharing this important work is clearly evident on these pages, and so infectious! Poignant, soulful, and evocative, this is one I will read again and again.

The Gaeilge Guide demonstrates the best of Mollie’s commitment to encouraging an appreciation of the Orishb anguage by providing historical and linguistic context. But what’s most impressive about it is that she makes accessible the cultural touchstone of the ancient language, providing practice with real-life phrases I’ve been able to use with my Irish neighbors! A thousand hanks, a Chara!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Beautiful, Transformative Journey Into Irish Language and Identity

The Gaeilge Guide by Mollie Guidera is one of the most meaningful books I’ve read in years. What Mollie has created is so much more than a language guide—it’s an invitation to rediscover who you are, where you come from, and how Irish can reshape the way you see the world.

As a person of Irish descent, this book helped me understand myself on a deeper level. It showed me that reconnecting with the Irish language is also a way of reconnecting with my own story. And what surprised me most is how learning Irish genuinely changes your thinking. The language carries a worldview that is imaginative, interconnected, and full of heart. Through this book—and through Mollie’s classes—I now know more Irish than I ever expected to, and that fills me with real pride.

Mollie has a rare gift for teaching. She replaces all the old fear, frustration, and shame many people felt learning Irish in school with warmth, clarity, and encouragement. Her approach is welcoming to absolutely everyone. She blends practical everyday Irish with beautiful etymology, cultural insight, and personal stories that give real soul to the learning process. Every page feels like sitting down with a wise, kind friend who believes fully in your ability to learn.

I especially loved how she weaves language and culture together—fite fuaite le chéile—so that you’re not just memorising words, you’re understanding how Irish carries memory, humanity, and identity within it. This guide makes Irish feel alive, accessible, and deeply meaningful, no matter your level or background.

The Gaeilge Guide opened my mind, strengthened my connection to my heritage, and reminded me of how beautiful this language truly is. It made me believe that Irish is something everyone should consider learning—not only to help keep the language thriving, but to experience the unique sense of belonging and perspective it offers.

A warm, wise, and empowering companion—and a richly deserving nominee for the Irish Book Awards. I can’t recommend this book highly enough.
