Monkey Peak is a mixture of some original and some clichéd horror ideas, backed by beautiful artwork. Overall, it is a fun read, but its not something that will be in your favorites list.

This story is far too contrived at the start. You have to really, REALLY, suspend your disbelief. Chapter 2 will make or break the story for you. Whether you're willing to accept how stupid everyone is in terms of how they planned to escape the situation at the start. Or whether you realize that they were all dumb enough to be going the wrong way and not back the way they came the day prior. And or at least going in a direction downward towards safety. The WHOLE story sits on this. And it's just too dumb for me. Rest of plot wouldn't happen if everyone wasn't dumb. How people couldn't tell they were going up instead of down a mountain is beyond me. Change in scenery? Feeling gravity get heavier? All things anyone with a brain can feel when walking up stairs or anything else. Just, so bad. So dumb. I don't care if someone changed a sign. You'd still more or less know the general downward direction in which you should be heading if that was the case. If it sounds interesting, give it a shot if your tolerance is better than mine. But otherwise, don't waste your time.

I was hesitant to pick this up because of the ratings, but I think it deserves the read if you're a fan of horror/survival/mystery manga.

It's not a 5-star for me because of the characters. Quite a lot of characters are the typical "tropes" you'd expect in a manga. A bit stereotypical, if you ask me. It's still fine, though. It's a minor pet peeve I have from reading volume 1 so far.

Definitely reading more of this!

This was a pretty straightforward horror manga! While I didn’t love the art style, I didn’t hate it either. The plot isn’t anything groundbreaking, but it definitely didn’t feel like it was copying anything!

I did appreciate the supernatural elements that were slowly introduced. All in all I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good slasher murder mystery.

Relentless thrill from the get, even if we don't get enough from each character, the pacing helps. Sometimes the survival capability towards the end got to the point of hard to believe, not impossible, just insane strength needed to get through all this, but again, blitzing pace of action helps.

Decent horror that requires suspension of disbelief to work. A lot of it doesn't make any sense at all, but it's entertaining in a telenovela kind of way. It's not good enough to make me want to read the 9 Volumes of the sequel series though...

This is a review for the entire series: 1 1/2 stars out of 5

This is a series I stuck with out of pure spite. I read this horror manga over the course of several years as chapters were released, sticking with it after the story and characters took a nose dive off a cliff (mostly metaphorically, but sort of literally) purely because I had invested so much time into it already.

I was initially drawn in by the premise: Employees from a Japanese pharmaceutical company are dragged out to a mountain for a teams building exorcise as part of a massive overhaul of their internal structure after a drug with known side-effects was purposefully sold to unsuspecting customers - leading to several deaths. On top of that, they are now being systematically hunted and killed by seemingly supernatural entity in the guise of a monkey.

The grounded concept of the employees struggles with their respective roles in the fatal pharmaceutical lawsuit pitted against a supernatural killer who might somehow be related to the company's crime gave me a lot of hope for this series. The story felt fresh and there were several likeable characters leading the narrative. By the point we reached the cabin though - the story lost me.

I don't think it was just one thing that went wrong during the cabin arc. There were a lot of questionable character decisions that contributed to my opinion souring on this series, but the one that stands out most prominently was who I will be calling Football Guy (I apologize for not remembering some of the names, because I am writing this review after some time has passed since me finishing it). I would say that this character's addition as a secondary antagonist and the overly simplistic reasons for him turning against other characters was both unnecessary and made him out to be cartoonishly crazy.

There were a lot of writing choices that felt like they would have worked - if they had been better written. Characters turning on each other because they think they're working with the monkeys, people hiding or hoarding food and water, the incest siblings, even Football Guy's crazy self-imposed authority. All of this could have worked, but . . . something felt off. The pacing in the last 3/4s of the series was so agonizingly slow with so much mountain climbing. I get that climbing was part of the danger, but it felt like we were just stuck in limbo for chapters on end while the author floundered trying to figure out how to further the plot.

Maybe this is a series I'd have to revisit, reading it clean through in one go, to get the intended experience, but until then Monkey Peak kind of left me unimpressed.
