Everything You Desire - A Journey through IIM is a novel written by Harshdeep Jolly, an alumnus of Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIM B). The book is an Indian version of Snapshots from Hell: The Making of an MBA by Peter Robinson about his life in Business School at Stanford. Everything You Desire is mostly a narration in first person of the experiences that Harsh underwent during the close to two year stay that he had at IIM B. The book gives an accurate though boring insight into the emotions, aspirations, trials and tribulations that a student at IIM undergoes during his stay at IIM.
Coming from an IIT, I found the book a bit slow as I could identify with several events in it and hence found their description a bit detailed. But may that's why the book was written - to provide a glimpse into the life of a guy in a highly competitive environment in India...getting in is not at all easy but surviving once you get is not a cake walk either!
This is somewhat like 5 point someone for IIMs. But 5 point someone is a crisp book with lots of masala, this is a more realistic book.
Humour at a few places was really good. Must read for IIM aspirants in India.
an IIM tag was what made me pick this book for a read, but the plot was quite dull infact there wasn't any plot i guess, it was more of like reading some one's daily diary. I found the book quite disappointing...
Disclaimer : It is quite boring for the person who has never been exposed to such campus life but may be interesting for one who aspires to experience it.
The only reason why I read this book was because I can completely relate to the experiences which has been narrated by the writer. Being an MBA student of a national institute I was reminiscing my experience of the campus life throughout the book. But the story was very detailed and the thing which I liked most about this book was that unlike few writers it doesn't have typical love story because it is not always the case of a normal student studying in a prestigious college. It is a simple story of a simple student about how his life was during the course in IIM-B and if anybody wants to know how life is at an IIM just go through this book you will get to know every teeny tiny detail of a typical IIM graduate.
Harshdeep has tried to portray the hectic life of IIMs but the way he portrayed it was a bit dull. It could have been some more interesting. Anyway its a good novel for starters.
