He was never meant to fall in love. Then she walked into his bookshop, dripping with rain and sunshine.
Lucien Vale is immortal — timeless, emotionless, and content to let centuries pass him by. But everything changes the day Annika Cassidy bursts into his quiet life, asking for poetry and leaving a trail of laughter in her wake. She’s mortal, messy, full of joy. Against every instinct, Lucien lets her in.
Their love story unfolds in flour-dusted laughter, stargazing, stolen kisses, and whispered confessions. For the first time in ages, Lucien dares to dream of something lasting. But forever is a cruel illusion — and when fate rips Annika away, Lucien’s world fractures beyond repair.
As grief hollows him out, rage takes root. Vengeance follows. And when even revenge brings no solace, Lucien must face the haunting what do you do with an eternity shaped by a love that ended too soon?
A spellbinding romantic tragedy of immortality, memory, and mourning — perfect for fans of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and The Song of Achilles.
5/5 unfinished teas and baked pastries for The Unraveling
I’m not crying, you’re crying 😭
“she wore socks with tiny strawberries on them. Strawberry socks. In his shop of ancient grimoires and leather tomes.”
This book is a beautiful, cosy poetry wrapped up in a warm blanket that shatters your heart.
It’s a short story (literally my kindle estimated about a 2 hour read or so) but so impactful ✨
“The firelight became visible through the trees first. Flickering, golden, dancing shadows between the branches. Then the laughter—soft, easy, rising like smoke into the night.”
We follow an immortal and watch as he’s brought back to life. The garden?!?! 😭 the most beautiful way I’ve seen love withstand time.
“Just life. Wild and chaotic and beautiful—like her.”
This story follows Lucian—an immortal man who’s spent centuries avoiding love, connection and happiness because it always ends in loss. And then he meets Annika, a mortal woman who changes everything.
This wasn’t just a love story. It was a haunting, soul-wrecking journey through grief—told by someone who will never reach the end of time.
I didn’t just cry… I sobbed.
This book broke me in ways I didn’t expect. I don’t think I’ll recover. Another masterpiece
This book will break your heart and have you reaching for the tissues but it'll also make you feel like there's hope even after experiencing such a profound loss like Lucien did in this book. His grief and desolation could be felt through the pages. The writing was so beautiful. It's a short read but still very impactful. The love between Annika and Lucien was yellow and like sunshine while Lucien's grief was all gray. That ending will not leave you without feeling all the feels.
Thank you to the author for sending me an ARC of The Unraveling.
By chapter 3, I was crying because the female main character reminded me of an old version of myself I miss. I literally have not stopped crying. I’m crying now writing this. This book truly needs to be read by everyone. It’s not for the weak, just know it’s about love and loss and grief. But this book will stay with me for awhile. I can not remember the last time this much emotion poured out of me while reading a book. Off to send A.J. a message to let them know they’ve destroyed me .. emotionally.
the story is cute and light. But I didn't finish it since I was not really interested in annika as a person. Lucien was very interesting. I found typos, which isn't a problem, unless there are as many as in this book.
Thank you A.J for absolutely destroying me 😂. I hope you have fun with all the tears i shed while reading this haha. Imma be honest i thought this was gonna be a cutesty romance.. i was wrong. I cried ALOT
The way A.J. writes about emotions and especially grief hit me so hard. Its so incredibly well written. The characters are extremely likeable which made the heartbreak even worse. This book was such an experience in such a sad but good way!!
