This world is just a gift that keeps on giving!! It never disappoints, I had so much fun and it made so emotional. It was also incredibly sweet, and yes I know this is a dark romance, just trust me..
As always, please check the trigger warnings!! This is not for everyone and as this is a continuation of the story, you need to read book one first.
Kane, it's always the broody man with scars no one sees who shield their emotions to protect them that hit the hardest!! It really broke my heart to see how he viewed himself, but seeing Lovelyn be there and how she got him to open up, it was everything. He was protective and I love how serious he took the boyfriend lessons, we love a man that will kill anyone who hurts you, but brings you all the flowers in your favourite colour!! He hated talking and sharing, but he made the effort for her, it did took him a while though. Lovelyn was so kind and gentle, the grief she battled broke my heart, but she was always there for the people she loved. I hate she felt less than, but I'm so happy she had Kane and the girls when she needed them the most. She truly deserves the world!! I glad she never settled, she knew what she wanted and she asked for it.
I loved them together, I loved the way they negotiated about everything, it was so fun!! They complemented each other perfectly. Him kidnapping her was honestly a killer beginning to their story, couldn't be better. I love how they started to build their trust and open up to each other. He had so many firsts with her and it honestly made it so much more special. I do wish they communicated certain things better, but I get it.. They grew together and it was a delight to see. That scene towards the end was so good, I loved it!!! That part is always my favourite, I love when they do that. I always enjoy the spice in these books and this was not the exception, it was so hot!!
I loved seeing the girls again, I adore them so much. The Skeleton Crew and this world is truly one of my favourites, the found family they created and how welcoming they are. I'm so happy Mila and Kane started to get closer as well. I absolutely hate their family though, I have some suspicions, I can't wait to find out everything in the next book.. I loathed Kane's aunt, but that scene at the end did bring me joy.
We're getting closer to finding out the murderer, I have some theories, but I'm so confused as to why the murder that happened, happened.. How is she connected.. I need answers and I need book three to come sooner.
I'm so excited for the next book, I love Tyler and can't wait to learn more about him and of course Dixie, she's amazing. I have so many questions and that ending ahhhh, that was so good!!
.·:*¨ ¨*:·.
It's finally time to read Kane's story. This is going to be soooo good!!
Plot 5/5 ⭐️ This was such a great continuation of the mystery from convict’s game! We get to learn more about Dixie and the mystery surrounding the Merchant. The grief depicted in this story gripped me. It surprisingly moved me and made me feel for the character so much more. AND that spice 🥵 5/5 🌶️
Oh, my heart! I don’t want this to be over. This was so perfect. At this point, I wouldn’t expect anything less from Jolie Vines, because I know her stories are always amazing. But this?
It was hot, it was emotional, it was funny when it needed to be… and it was actually pretty sweet at times. I don’t know what that says about me when something in a dark romance feels adorable and sweet, but this couple managed it. You know that warm feeling, the butterflies in your stomach? I had that throughout this book. I swear, I felt every single emotion right along with Lovelyn and Kane.
I absolutely love how Jolie Vines writes stories that you simply can’t put down. The 🌶️ scenes are perfection. The characters completely pull you in – I love Kane, I love Lovelyn, and I love the chemistry between them. You can literally feel the sparks flying between them right through the pages.
As always, the presence of the Skeleton Crew makes an already perfect book even better, because every time one of the previous characters appears, I feel like a little kid opening presents.
And the mystery? The way the author connects this book to previous series, how she weaves everything together, how the current storyline develops… I won’t lie, even after finishing the book I’m still thinking about it, my head full of conspiracy theories. And I can’t wait for the final book in this series, because even though I’m hoping we’ll get more (please – I’m not ready to say goodbye to the Skeleton Crew, I just can’t), I’m incredibly curious to see how everything will be resolved. And whether, for once, I’ll actually guess something – or if we’ll once again be reading with our jaws on the floor because I never saw it coming.
I absolutely loved Convict in the last book but Kane is another level! 🥵 LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!!!!!!! These kinds of MMC seem to be my kryptonite 😍
It picks up right where we left off in the last book and I honestly couldn't put this down! We still have the mystery running throughout whilst we also find out more about Lovelyn and Kane. They are the polar opposite but they always say opposites attract don't they? These two, even though so different, were meant to be. They brought out a different side to the other to help them grow and it was wonderful to read.
The spice is spicing and Kane is my man 😍 Phew, get the fans out 🥵 I really liked seeing another side to him as well when it was just him and Lovelyn. The vulnerability, the gentle giant ❤️ The path wasn't easy but they got there!
Lots of drama, angst, mystery, spice and banter ❤️ I honestly CANNOT wait for the next book to finally get all the answers..... I hope!
A fantastic addition to this series and I would recommend it to anyone who likes this genre! Please read the TW first though!
And we're back in this lovely dark romance murder mystery series! Jolie is one of my favorite authors to binge. Her deliciously spicy Scottish set romances always leave me needing a cold drink of water while I google "men with Scottish accents"... but I DIGRESS 🤭. This newest installment in her Skeleton Crew series was certainly no exception!
💜 Dark Romance 💀 Murder Mystery 💜 Bad Boy x Good Girl 💀 Found Family 💜 Grief/Loss of a Loved One 💀 Touch Her & *Expire*
Each book in the series follows a new couples romance, but there is an overarching murder mystery storyline going on throughout which means you do need to read the first book (at the very least) to understand what's going on.
In this book we follow Kane and Lovelyn. Kane is a big old brute of a man, with such a tortured soul. He doesn't know how to love anyone, but thankfully Lovelyn is game to help him figure it out how 😏. And oh my sweet Lovelyn is quite the fighter! She is not afraid to look this hulk of a man in the eyes and say exactly what she thinks. Thankfully, Kane likes that about her and together they make an interesting pair. A pair who also likes a little primal play... which is always a nice little bonus if you ask me 🥵
What I adore most about all of Jolie's books is the found family she builds. Everyone is always welcomed with open arms, and even in this dark and gritter series that message is still the same. Especially with Lovelyn and Kane both coming from very messed up family situations, it's nice to see them welcomed with open arms into the group.
My only real problem with this one though is that I feel like we ran around in circles in terms of the overarching mystery and we didn't really progress any further than we did in the last book. I would have liked to have solved even a little something... and I feel like we just didn't? Since this is the 2nd book in the trilogy, I'm going to give it a bit of grace because we still have a whole book left to wrap things up with. I do have faith that Jolie will give us all the juicy details in the next one, but that is why I had to tick a little off the rating.
With all that being said, the ending was actually CRIMINAL and the fact we have to wait until May for the conclusion to the trilogy and to find out WHO THE HELL THAT WAS AT THE END?!!! (I'll leave it at that to not spoil anything) but WHOO BOY, what a cliffhanger. I can't wait for Tyler and Dixie's book, I just know it's going to be as explosive as both of them and I cannot wait! 🤭
**Thank you Jolie Vines and her team for the eARC of this in exchange for my honest review 🫶🏼
Whew chile, when I say Jolie wrote my catnip, my kryptonight, that man, that man that makes me want to trip taking my panties off in a rush for, Lord did she write him in this book.
First I thought no one could ever upstage Arran, he held out over Shade & Rio, as smexy as those 2 guys are but then she gave us Convict and Arran slid quietly in to 2nd place. But now, now she gave me, yes not us but ME, Kane. He is mine, I claim him, y'all can fight over the others. Kane is an emotional brick wall, he shuts everyone out, family, coworkers, has no friends. But then he sees her. Lovelyn. And he falls, just a tiny bit at first but convinces himself it's just lust. Its not. You know it, I know it, Lovelyn knows it. Men. 🙄
Poor, sweet Lovelyn. Dealing with a father who is more a stranger then a parent, working through emotions that no one knows about, hiding parts of herself from her friends because she's afraid that she'll scare them away. But then Kane, hello Kane. The first time he propositioned her, I wanted to smack my forehead. But again, emotional brick wall. They begin working together to find Dixie, each for their own reasons at first. Its rocky at first, with Kane being so distant and barely verbal but slowly the attraction grows until, well you wouldn't believe me if I told you. But holy cow, yes please!! 🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵
The story arcs nicely, giving enough action to keep the story moving, intercepted with moments of emotion, scenes of pure 🌶🌶🌶, and a mystery that still isn't solved at the end of the book. Not completely anyway. Oh! and there's a "Watcher" in this book, that came outta nowhere but I love how it added to the story and I'm 99.99% sure I know who it is. 🤔🤔🤨
Dedication To the reader who insisted she didn’t fall for brooding giants. Then you locked eyes with the human battering ram. Good luck surviving him, flower girl.
It had been thrilling to be on his arm. The shape of him broke my brain. His bulk, the powerful way he moved, the don’t-give-a-fuck attitude he wore like armour.
Lovelyn was fuckin’ gorgeous, all curves with thick thighs I’d happily wear as ear warmers.
Her long hair, brunette with blonde highlights, was tied up today, but when she wore it loose, it fell like a waterfall down her back. More than once, I’d pictured it wrapped around my fist with her on her knees for me.
“A bed? Try against a wall in a dark alley when I catch ye in a chase, or deep in the woods where I make ye scream. Whichever you prefer.”
He was someone from an action movie. Reacher or Bourne. Cool and controlled.
Only cold precision, the icy calm of a man who had learned how to finish a fight before it truly began. Or survived worse
“You’re a fuckin’ vision, Lovelyn.”
“Close your eyes, flower girl. All ye can feel is me, my body owning yours. I’m all that matters. Let go.”
She had no idea how I couldn’t breathe around her. More than just from kissing her. When she smiled at me. Laughed. Touched me. I wasn’t sure when it started, but it was getting stronger in line with my addiction to her.
Lovelyn was the calm heart of the storm, and I needed to keep her with me.
I’d fallen in love with my flower girl. I’d written it on her skin in the dead of night. But hell was I bringing her down with me.

I loved this book! Kane and Lovelyn were great characters. This is the second book in the Skeleton Crew series, and you’ll have really needed to read the first one to understand what’s going on here. We met Kane and Lovelyn in that book, and this one opens up right where “Convict’s Game” left off, with Lovelyn having been “abducted” by a mystery man. We soon learn what is going on and the story commences.
I loved Kane’s inner monologue about Lovelyn and how attracted to her he was. It’s wonderful when the plus size girls gets love. Kane was so closed off in the beginning, and I was so happy when he realized he needed to open up and let people in. Lovelyn was so sweet, but had backbone and stood up to Kane when he was being grumpy. Their spicy times are hot and plentiful! You could see Kane falling in love with her as the book went on, it was great. The relationship between Kane and his sister Mila improves with the book as well, and it warmed my heart.
The mystery from the first book continues, and we still don’t know who has been killing people. I like that it’s not obvious and I have no idea who the culprit is. The fact that we still have the other characters from the Body Count series in these books is awesome, and I love the whole crew together. The found family aspect is amazing. I can’t wait for the third book to come out!
Another brilliant tale by Jolie, and I'm going to be honest, when our hulking hero was first introduced in Convict’s Game, he absolutely did not really spark my interest. Boy, oh boy can I be so happy to say I was terribly wrong. Our silent boy captured not only our Lovelyn's heart, but mine as well.
Speaking of the lovely flower girl, she surprises you. Fully, she's not that meek little wallflower that she is projected to be. She is wild, creative and will do ANYTHING for thise she cares for, even if they are too big, broody and stubborn to see it.
Aside this insane wild ride these two take, we are also still delving deeply into the disappearance of our beloved Dixie and the drama involving the Marchant Family, (Mila and Kane.....and all that craziness). As well as significant appearances by all our favorite gangsters and their ladies! You do not want to miss a single moment on this journey. Dive in...and catch up!!!!
Amazing! Absolutely jaw-dropping. Kane is the literal definition of tall, dark and broody. And Lovelyn is a great blend of sweet and badass.
The way she manages to crumble his concrete defences had me melting. And on the spice side, this is one for those who love primal.
Super second instalment to this series. Another wild ride and delivered in spades as has me highly anticipating the final book so we can unravel the web of mystery around Dixie and the unaliving plot which is only getting more gripping.
This one picks up right where Convict ended. And it takes us on a fun, steamy and wild adventure. I freaking loved Lovelyn, she was special, kind and feisty. Kane was awesome as well, but this is one of those rare books for me where I like the fmc a bit more than the mmc and I'm not mad about it at all.
They made a fantastic duo, and the girls once again were Rockstars!! I had such a fun time reading this book. I can't recommend it enough, this series just gets better and better. These characters are all so good and unique. I'm looking forward to the next one so very much!!!
A man of little words but so much depth. A woman always seeking answers. Kane's Prey is book two in the Skeleton Crew series and it is smoking hot. The chemistry going on between Lovelyn and Kane is absolutely on fire.(even if he denies it) The chase scenes definitely page turners, and the emotional journey unprecedented. One of the most memorable parts of the book include the relationship between both main characters and their mothers. Bittersweet doesn't even touch it. The story includes all the OG crew and is still has the mysterious questions of who to trust and who is responsible for the carnage within Deadwater. Definitely recommend this series and all the books by Jo Vines. Five star reads every time. Cannot wait for the next great read.
Intense. Captivating. Danger. Darkly Delicious. Hunted. Kanes Prey will have you wanting to be the prey to his predator. Lovelyn is his complete opposite with a dark side she didn’t realize she had, until she meets Kane and he unlocks her darkest desires. Come play with the Skeleton Crew, but beware, you’ll never be the same again, and you’ll love it
2,5/5 ⭐ 1,5/5 🌶️ Nope. I found it to be a very dull book. I don't know why, but I didn't connect with the characters at all. Some parts were cute and others soooo predictable. I'll finish the series because I don't like leaving things half done.
I received an ARC. Wow! These two had me hooked from book 1. The sweetness of Lovelyn and the hardness of Kane. I love watching him fall for her. The emotional pain both of these two have been through they really are perfect for each other. And the chasing soo hot and loved every minute of it. Can't wait for Dixie’s book.
When Jolie did the cover release for Kane’s Prey I remember she said there was a reason Kane doesn’t wear a mask and I knew then that this was going to be my favorite MMC she’d write yet! I can safely say, she nor Kane disappointed my expectations.
This book kept me up into the night turning the pages until the sun was rising! Lovelyn and Kane will keep you on your toes and begging for more on every page.
The found family, underlying mysteries woven in, the spice… Chef’s kiss every time. 🧑🍳🤌
Jolie Vines has done it again. She has given her readers characters that are complex, a bit chaotic and utterly fascinating. Big, brawny and growly Kane seems distant, cold and guarded, but Lovelyn discovers he has a softer vulnerable side that he keeps under wraps and locked down. These two characters grabbed hold of my heart, left a few bruises and then healed them as they found their way past all the pain they had been holding onto, the doubts and fears that plagued them and let love grow between them.
Kane is definitely not submissive in any way, yet even he succumbs to love. Oh, he fights it and tries to shove it and Lovelyn away, but the thought of her with any other man breaks through his resistance and demands that he claim her for himself. Lovelyn has her own heartbreak to deal with as well as her father’s indifference and coldness. Working with Kane to find her friend and seeming his previously unknown sister, Dixie/Darcy, brings them in close proximity, a proximity she finds to be both disconcerting and thrilling. He challenges her on multiple levels and tests her boundaries. She never expected to enjoy the chase and capture, his filthy and very intimate talk or his brazenness. His motives may be questionable, but she senses a hidden pain and vulnerability. When it is exposed, Kane shuts down and shoves Lovelyn away, choosing to guard his heart and bury any tender feelings. At a time where she is at her most vulnerable, his rejection nearly breaks her. Fortunately, the ladies of the Skelton Girls Detective Agency are there to support her and devise a plan to get Kane’s attention and reunite the two lovers.
Their story is intense, emotional and very spicy. It turns out that Kane and Lovelyn enjoy a chase and capture scenario as well as a few other kinks that make them a perfect match. Both hearts have been battered, bruised and betrayed, but love heals them both. They truly see each other, including the mess of emotions, fears and doubts that haunt each of them. They survived their bio families and have become part of a found family. Sure their found family may be morally grey, have lethal skills and believe in vengeance and reparation, but there is also unconditional support, loyalty and love too. When one of them is in jeopardy or in trouble, they all rally to support, protect or even do some sneaky matchmaking.
This fabulous book has my wholehearted recommendation.
And truthfully, I love a surprise ending. Don’t get me wrong, I love a predictable, cosy ride just as much as the next Kindle girlie. But sometimes I want my pulse quickened, my breath caught, my nerves humming.
Kane’s Prey understood MFKing the assignment!
Kane, my bonny prickly pear, oh Kane! If you look up primal play in the dictionary, you will find his picture. And that’s saying something, with 2 of the guys in this series having chased down their loves and claimed them in a brutal and sexy cat-and-mouse chase in the basement of Divide. Kane can give them a master class. Like the rest of the guys, he is a tortured soul, and I hate that for him. I wanted to rip his aunt’s throat out with my teeth and feed the leftovers to my dogs. I couldn’t imagine saying half of those things to my nephew.
Lovelyn, First, full honesty: I hate her name. No logic, no deeper meaning. I can’t put my finger on why, but I just do, her name grates on me like a popcorn kernel stuck in your teeth. With that said I like her as a character. She has personality, a little bite to her. Something Mila was sadly lacking. I still can’t get a read on her, even though she had a named chapter in this book. She’s just kinda a blank hole for Convict, where Lovelyn is an actual person outside of being Kane’s prey.
Here’s where I have to take a pause; the repeated female death and strangulation is starting to sour the experience for me. It edges dangerously close to the “Girl in the Fridge” trope, which is a hard no for me in this genre. Karla was, let’s face it… an ass. We won’t pretend otherwise. But was that her inevitable end? Was she written solely to be awful on her way to the hangman’s noose? It feels that way. And I’m too much of a girl’s girl to sit comfortably with that.
Could this book have worked without that murder? Honestly, yes. Absolutely.
Still, Kane’s Prey surprised me, rattled me, and made my heart race and had me reaching for my rose on more than one occasion. I just hope future installments learn to let women live long enough to be complicated, messy, and human, without paying for it with their lives.
Kane’s Prey (Skeleton Crew #2) by Jolie Vines is a suspenseful high-heat opposites-attract dark romance and book two of an interconnected trilogy with a murder mystery that spans the series, so it ends on a cliffhanger. The story follows the relationship between Kane, an ex-mercenary gangster, and Lovelyn, the daughter of a shady cop.
Kane’s Prey is told in the first person, mostly in dual POV, from Kane and Lovelyn's perspectives with a handful of chapters (5 total) from three other characters: the Watcher, Mila, and Dixie. Although Kane’s Prey is the second book of the Skeleton Crew trilogy, this trilogy is a sequel to the Body Count trilogy. Those who have read the Body Count books will have the richest experience as events in that series provide background and form the foundation this trilogy and its world has been built on. Several characters from the Body Count trilogy make appearances as well, so I highly recommend reading it first.
Kane’s Prey picks up right where Convict’s Game ended with Lovelyn in the back of a van, a black cloth over her head, after being snatched off the street. (You’ll have to read the book to find out how she gets out of that.) Nobody has seen or heard from Dixie in a while, and it looks like she left her place in a hurry. So Lovelyn and Kane, each for their own reasons, team up to find her and make sure she’s safe. But they’re not the only ones looking for Dixie; somebody else is hunting her. Who will find her first?
I enjoyed Kane and Lovelyn’s story. After meeting Kane in Convict’s Game I was curious to find out more, and his story did not disappoint. Lovelyn and Kane have an immediate attraction and their chemistry is off-the-charts hot. Their story is full of drama, twists, some suspense, a still-unsolved murder mystery, and tons of heat. There are also some surprisingly sweet moments. I can’t wait to see how everything unfolds and the mystery gets solved in book three, Tyler’s Rule.
You want to know what I hate about this book? That I've already read it 😭 It was one of my most anticipated books of the year, and now I've read it. It's sooo good, but I can never read it for the first time 😭
Obviously, Jolie did amazing again. I'm absolutely in love with Kane. He is so 🔥 I'm convinced that's the first criterion to become a Skeleton Crew member 😁 He looks like he is a really bad boy. He isn't a Saint, but he isn't bad. He has a very soft core. He built very high walls around it. He's broken. 🥺 And I don't think I'm saying too much when I say, Lovelyn is the only person who can get behind these walls 😎
Kane also has a lot of the same k!nks as the other members, I guess that's the second criterion 🤣 It gets very 🌶️ between him and Lovelyn 🥵
Even though it's not a series that has a cliffhanger for the couple, the series has a ☠️ mystery that runs through all three books. So, it's definitely necessary to at least read this series in order, even though I think the first book should be Ruin (Dark Island Scots), then you will get the full experience of the dark books with all the background.
I can't wait to read the third book. I need to get behind the ☠️ mystery. Who the freak is all involved in it... And the mystery about this "missing" person. I have so many theories about all the things 🙈 I can't wait to see what is right 😎
I also had an idea for some of the new faces 😁 I mean, wouldn't it be time for another MFM book? The last one was sooo long ago 🙈
Thanks to the author for trusting me with an ARC 🩷
Did I start this book yesterday morning? Yes. Did I stay up reading until after 2am to finish it? Also yes.
Jolie's heroes are like crack to me. It's like she reaches into the depths of dark romance readers' minds and picks the perfect traits to make us swoon. Kane is my favorite type of MMC: strong, protective, sexy but oh so vulnerable. A man with a troubled, heartbreaking past who finds happiness with someone who brings sunshine into his life? What could be better?
I'll tell you what. A crazy intriguing murder plot spanning several books that keeps me guessing (and reading!)!!! I am so curious—and now totally impatient for Tyler's book.
I thought Lovelyn and Kane were perfect together. She had so many insecurities and was vulnerable in her own way, and yet her heart was wide open to Kane and his seductive games. I sort of think their feelings caught both of them by surprise, and I love that, too.
I had never even heard of primal kink until a few years ago, but let me tell you, when it's done right, I am HERE FOR IT. And Jolie wrote those scenes perfectly. Kane wanted what he wanted and made no apologies, and Lovelyn could only hold him off for so long.
I loved them together and I loved the continuation of the Skeleton Crew story arc. The only thing that distracted me was how much space was given to the Marchant family business... I know it's a big part of the storyline and Kane's family, but there are so many people to keep track of and so much information, when I just really wanted more of Kane and Lovelyn's romance!
A wonderful HEA and the perfect tease for what’s coming next with Tyler & Dixie. Can't wait!
Jolie has done it again, every story I read by her has me completely captivated. I devoured this and I this story had so many emotions that came out.
Continuing where we left off, Lovelyn is determined to find Dixie and bring her home. The crew thought they lost her once, and now more than ever they need to find her. She didn’t expect to end up searching with Kane- the giant brute man who keeps all the secrets to himself, and who is stone cold and keeps a wall up that nobody can break down. That is until it starts to completely disintegrate for her. Becoming his prey is everything she didn’t think she wanted, but she absolutely loved the chase. Slowly he begins to show who he truly is, and she can’t help but chase after him as well. Uncovering secrets, solving a mystery, and finding true love, this story has so many twists and turns, and it was everything.
Lovelyn is such a strong character while still showing her vulnerability. She grows and changes for the better, and realizes her worth, and stops begging for acceptance from her family. While Kane is reserved, wants nothing to do with the crew, he ends up not only finding where he belongs, but proving he also deserves happiness. Slowly Lovelyn shows him he is cared and loved, and will always be there for him, and he will destroy anyone who comes in-between them.
I absolutely loved their dynamic, it was sweet yet spicy, and I kept wanting more. Overall I completely loved this story, the writing is always so captivating, and I was so fully submerged I’m this. I cannot wait to read the next book!
Kane had a hard life, harder then most of the crew,he was always on the outside looking in.Lovelyn was a part of a girl crew that look for women and children who went missing or were in a bad life looking for less dangerous one.Kane always kept to himself,to many hangups etc until Lovelyn showed up in the picture, she was a friend of his sister, they were both working on a Case that intertwined with what each other was working on.So they were thrown together, they became each other's savor, while working on a job together, her walls were slowly come down and his walls were even slower, Kane was going thru boyfriend in training and not doing bad until the day they were both visiting his MA and his aunt was also there and she started to lay in Kane with the blame game and his walls went back up fast and it broke Kane and Lovelyn apart,so bad that she really didn't know what to do but to go back to her old ways and shut down.It was good to read a story that was about two people with certain hangups fight the world of sex trafficking, missing women and children at the same time fighting the attraction they both had,to lose each other or give up on each other but decide that maybe it was worth it to try one more time to fight and that's what Kane did for Lovelyn and they still got b their second chance while trying to rid the world of scumbags, crime!I thought the watcher was Tyler but in the end I was thrown for a loop and can't wait to read Tyler's tale!
Loved reading Kane's Prey! This has drama, some violence, spice and a cast of characters you love.
Taking off from where Convict's story left off where Kane was found to be a Marchant and the brother to Mila and Darcy in Convict's story (#1). After working with Lovelyn, who is a high ranking cops daughter, they discover who Darcy really is. Except Darcy is missing and it's imperative she be found quickly and make sure she's safe. With very little to go on, Kane and Lovelyn set out to find her. It's on this trip that Kane realizes and quite bluntly shares what he wants from Lovelyn. Slowly but surly, Kane shows who he really is through Lovelyn's patience.
Lovelyn has a stalker who has called in his threats to her father, who does nothing about it. This stalker also tries breaking into her home a couple of times, again no help. Being neglected by her father and then learning of some of Kane's backstory, these two seem to have more in common than they thought. They end up getting really close only for it to be torn apart, brutally!
It's a team effort to see if these two unloveables can actually be brought back together. It's just all part of the game!
This book delves deeper into a couple of mysteries, with the largest mystery the hardest to crack. With a list of our loveable characters still working to solve it all as quickly as they can. Such a good read and quite the cliffhanger! I can't wait for Tyler's story!
Jolie has the knack of writing damaged men and making you love them
Kane gets his chance at love in the second instalment in the Skeleton Crew trilogy. A tall but quiet man who is hiding years of emotional abuse Kane meets Lovelyn at the Skeleton Crew warehouse and decides her superior analytical skills and research are just what he needs to find Dixie. Kidnapping Lovelyn might not have been the best way to go about it but she soon agrees to help him. A road trip together and a hunt draws them closer and Kane indulges in some hot predator prey games with Lovelyn. More Marchant intrigue to keep us guessing, another murder and a stalker after Kane's girl make for another fun read in our Deadwater world. Kane's past with his aunt absolutely broke my heart and I wanted to cheer when Lovelyn had his back. Jolie really does just have the best way and understanding of writing men who have been emotionally abused, she just gets them. It's always nice to spend time with Arran and his crew and pregnant sassy Everly was everything, telling overprotective Connor to keep his big-boy pants on had me roaring with laughter. Truthfully I'd happily read another book of Shade and his temptress I love them so much they'll always be my favourite couple but I have to say Kane and Lovelyn gave them a run for the money and they've taken my second spot behind Connor and Ev. This one left us on another cliffhanger and I can't wait for Tyler to finish off the trilogy
Kane and Lovelyn’s story was everything—hot, emotional, funny, and surprisingly sweet in that dark romance way that makes you feel like you’re melting. I had butterflies the entire time! I swear, I felt every single emotion right along with them.
Let’s talk about Kane, he is the definition of an emotional brick wall: cold, guarded, and barely verbal. Watching this growly, brawny giant fall for Lovelyn (and try to fight it because he thinks it's "just lust" 🙄) was pure gold. But when he finally stops fighting? WHEW. Get the fans out because the spice is spicing. He’s a filthy talker with a "chase and capture" kink that is absolute perfection. 🥵🔥
Then we have Lovelyn. My heart broke for her—dealing with an indifferent father and hiding her true self from the world. She and Kane are total polar opposites, but they are so clearly meant to be. They challenge each other’s boundaries and bring out a vulnerability that neither of them knew they had. Their chemistry is electric; you can literally feel the sparks flying off the page!
The mystery and that "Watcher" subplot had my head spinning with conspiracy theories (and I’m 99.9% sure I know who it is!). I love how Jolie weaves in the Skeleton Crew—every time a previous character popped up, I felt like a kid opening presents! It’s the perfect mix of drama, angst, and "morally grey" found family vibes. I am currently sitting with my jaw on the floor, dying for the next book to get some answers.
We're back in Deadwater for a continuing mystery! This time, we follow the newest Skeleton Crew member - silent, mysterious Kane - and his unlikely pairing with the corrupt police chief's daughter, Lovelyn. We met these characters in the first book, Convict's Game. Kane and Lovelyn join forces to delve deeper into the murders surrounding Kane's estranged family's business. Kane is a blunt man who shares nothing and keeps his emotions to himself, while Lovelyn is a sweet girl who works with information and wears her heart on her sleeve. Their contrasting personalities make for fireworks from the opening chapter, and that connection continues throughout the book as Lovelyn does her best to help Kane work through the Deadwater mysteries - and his own darker past.
This is book two in the Skeleton Crew trilogy. The overarching storyline that began in book one ends in a cliffhanger in this book. This series is also a sequel to the Body Count trilogy, which had its own murder mystery, and introduced many of the characters we see in Kane's Prey.
Jolie has once again created a dark, romantic story that draws you in and keeps you guessing. The characters are well-developed, and the clashing dispositions make for excitement on every page. The continuity - including storyline, characters, and locations - is one of the things that I love most about Jolie's writing. This book is no exception.
