"I'm starting to really get it lately... Yasuo's actually a good guy. Those hands... are for protecting cats."

This is probably my favorite volume so far. I especially love how cute the cover is, Yasuo looks so snug and comfortable with all his cat friends!

I really admire how nonchalant Yasuo and Uta are when dealing with kitty excrement so often -- just goes to show that people who take care of animals for a living really have seen it all, and have super strong stomachs! XD
The chapter about trying to get one of the kittens to go potty for the first time was so funny because that perfectly exemplified the way that veterinarians have the thickest skin of them all, and have no hesitations about doing what needs to be done to help cats' health! It made me laugh sm!

There's also a few side stories about Hachi and the way he likes to play. I love Hachi, he's so serious even when he's chasing after a little butterfly toy! So cute!! And once again he reminds me of my own boy cat, who loves to gnaw on the strings of toys instead of playing with the actual toy...!

At the end of this volume we get to see Yasuo's backstory arc, which is really sad and a bit tough to read. Cats really are such a comfort for people who struggle with relationships to others. However, we really do have to be careful with strays -- it's a slippery slope. Yasuo realizing that he and his community had actually been doing harm to the community of cats was really heartbreaking. It's hard when all you want to do is help but you don't know properly how -- I could see Yasuo cracking under the pressure of wanting to protect these cats but not having the means to.
Yasuo is such a good guy. I love him :( This volume was so great.

The street cats get moved to a larger room where they meet two kittens and an older senior cat. As the care for the felines continues, so does the readers’ understanding of everyone’s past, including Yasuo and his love for cats.

I absolutely love learning more and more about our beloved characters as we get further and further into this series. We learn about Yasuo and his past and his first cat love. We also see Hachi getting more and more comfortable with humans. I also love his patience with the kittens - like, he’s still annoyed with them, but he doesn’t really take offense to their young craziness.

Oh, I learned a bit more about baby kittens (and their poop) than I did before, so there’s that.

Overall, another cute and adorable volume of this series. Cat lovers will still enjoy it.

As of now, I’ve read up to the first four volumes of this series and I must say I’m really enthralled by Cat Companions Maruru and Hachi.

It’s a pretty slice of life and kind of educational story series about two cats, one a tough street cat and the other a lost house cat and how they survive in the world with food scarcity, people who hate cats, people who love them, other street cats who don’t tolerate competition for turf and food supply, excitable and vulnerable kittens, and a cat shelter that most street cats view as a place of doom.

At least until dire circumstances lead our two main protagonists to seek help from the shelter.

All in all, I’m finding Cat Companions to be a very cute, feel good and still emotionally engaging chill read despite how it doesn’t shy away from the harsher realities of life for cats. Especially street cats.

I love how the artist draws the *ahem* “nastier” realities of caring for a cat with little stars and hearts and I also love how much the story allowed for the readers to be completely immersed in the POV of the cats and how they view the world and the humans. It to me makes for a pretty interesting story experience.

That being said, as I said some things that the manga touches on can get pretty dark concerning the reality for street cats, kittens who lose their mother too soon after birth and even some of the various human and cat relationships that are present throughout, but there are still plenty of cute, fun and heartfelt moments to go around too.

For me I loved learning a little about the realities of cat shelters (at least in Japan I guess), what it takes to care for cats, what’s additionally needed to care for kittens as well as the challenges of helping street cats adjust to being with a human and our main protagonists Hachi and Maruru are pretty lovable for what they are too.

All in all I am really enjoying this series and looking forward to the next two installments. This got me into cat Mangas and I only wish I could find something similar but about dogs.

This book was definitely more serious than the others, I feel like the goal here was to educate people and i really like that. We got new characters again ! Some little kitties and a grandma, whose backstory is absolutely inhumane and broke my heart, I’m so glad she can sleep all day in the sunlight now ! I did laugh a lot at this evil cat it made me think of one of mine, and the funniest part was when the kitties fell asleep while fighting ! When it comes to Yasuo’s backstory with how he started helping cats it really touched me because i can relate to him and his personality, and also the feeling of seeing cats suffer and sometimes not being able to do anything. This book really hit my feelings and i can’t wait to see the rest.

We learn about Yasuo's backstory in this manga, and I can't make myself care. I love that Yasuo wants to help cats, but I don't care why he wants to care for cats. The author, Yuri Sonoda, didn't do a good job making me care about Yasuo as a person.

This seris is about the cats, and randomly I'm supposed to care about Yasuo even though we spend so little time with him in the series. I ended up skipping this section of the manga because it was so boring. The rest of the book was boring as well, unfortunately, which makes me upset because I was liking this series. I'm happy the cats are being properly cared for now, but I hate that it made the series boring.

I love these cats so much, honestly. Yasuo's backstory is so sad (this volume was actually kind of upsetting), it actually made me tear up. I'm so glad the shelter cats are safe and living well after their hard lives as strays. Maruru and Hachi's friendship is so cute, and I'm really enjoying seeing the other strays and other shelter cats come into the story. The human characters are just as amusing, especially with the kittens and their first poop! I'm loving this series, as I knew I would.

I think this is the first volume I haven't cried through. But is still an emotional volume. The little kittens are just madness and I am so proud of Kedama enjoying his food again (even if it is a little stressful for him). Hachi with the toys is adorable. And I love that we get back story about Yasou. So sweet.

If you ever wanted to know the ins and outs of how a cat poops, this volume’s for you. The poop escapade went on a little too long, so we barely got any story development, but we met some new kitties and got some of Yasuo’s backstory.
